    *"It's just a BMW. It's hard to get in and out. Fake sounds in cabin. It's just a BMW. It's unreliable. IT DOESN'T LOOK like the concept! It's just a Z4" etc. etc.*
    This channel actually explains to you why the businesses decision was made with BMW and the engineering factor behind each and every aspect of the car instead of leaving it as an open ended personal complaint. I hate how other channels do that!!!
    Best review channel PERIOD.

      "It's just a BMW. It's hard to get in and out. Fake sounds in cabin. It's just a BMW. It's unreliable. IT DOESN'T LOOK like the concept! It's just a Z4"
      Is all 100% true. So I don't see the issue. Toyota lied to fans and enthusiasts about 'partnering' with BMW to lower costs, and lied how the development was separate, when it really wasn't.
      Toyota is the second largest automotive company next to the VW group... They could easily afford to make their own car... they could've even sold it at a loss and subsidized the costs across multiple years of sales to break even and into profit without denting their company wallet. They chose not to. They didn't care enough about it. It was a last-ditch attempt at silencing everyone wanting a new Supra, without caring enough to make one, just to make a quick buck.
      This deserves to be criticized forever, and NEVER forgotten.

    • @sdlausen1
      @sdlausen1 5 лет назад +21

      @@enigmaPL Sorry to tell you but... your comment clearly dictates why you're not an automotive executive. Your idea really makes no business sense. Why would a company sell a mid level sports car or any product for that matter at a loss? The only time a company would ever sell a product at a loss is a halo product. This product is used as a marketing tool and offers a trickle down effect etc. Also, when did Toyota lie? Proof?
      There is no mass market for sports cars anymore and partnering with BMW was the ONLY way for Toyota to justify the cost in producing the Supra. Economies of scale allowed BMW and Toyota to make the Supra affordable as well. If developed in house, it would easily have cost around the same price as a Lexus LC500 due to having to spend the R&D on a whole new inline 6, transmission, chassis etc. -- pointless really. At that point, you would cry why it's so expensive. Instead of being happy Toyota is even bringing out a sports car nobody will buy, you complain. Typical internet keyboard warrior.
      If you really want a next gen Supra a kin to the MKIV developed in house, that's what the LC500 is for. Like the MKIV, it's a big GT that is 100% Toyota.

    • @enigmaPL
      @enigmaPL 5 лет назад +12

      @@sdlausen1 And yet, there are more sports cars on the market today than there have been in the past decade, all doing well. Manufacturers making the best of the best iconic models, selling well and providing great marketing just by creating a damn good product. How is it everyone else can manage it, but the second largest automotive company in the world, cannot?
      They took an iconic name, for the flagship model of the company, and put it on another manufacturers mid-tier car, to call their own. It's absolutely pathetic, and just as pathetic is defending that practice of corporate greed and short term profits above all else.
      As for 'proof of Toyota lying'.... I hope you're joking.... If not... Just look over all the marketing bullshit they spewed, then see for yourself how much of it was true, and convince yourself. Because something that blatant cannot be explained.

    • @sdlausen1
      @sdlausen1 5 лет назад +8

      @The Norm Macdonald Show I guess you magically want Toyota to make money on a car nobody will buy. You also want to spend $100k on a Supra that nobody would buy. Why don't you just by an LC500? I'm no fan of the BMW/Toyota collaboration on the Supra, but it was the only way Toyota could financially justify producing it.

    • @sdlausen1
      @sdlausen1 5 лет назад +7

      @The Norm Macdonald Show You make no sense. If you think Toyota made the Supra to make a "profit" out of a low volume 2 door niche sports car, you're smoking crack cocaine. You clearly have no business sense or understanding of it. I guess you just rather not even have a Supra at all. Like I said, want a modern day Supra, BUY A Lexus LC500! I was a through-and-through Japanese car guy my whole driving life. I've owned a 1973 Datsun 240Z for the past 30 years, and all my daily drivers have been Japanese. As a teenager in the 80's, American cars were the epitome of lazy engineering that just couldn't compete with the Japanese. But when I recently had the means to buy another fun car, I ended up with a 2018 Camaro SS 1LE, and I couldn't be happier. The performance for dollar value is leaps and bounds better than anything the Japanese offer, and not just straight line performance. The 1LE is one of the best handling cars our there. And it does all this with a level of sophistication that I'd never expect from a car at this price point... magnetic ride suspension, electronics limited slip differential, rev matching, 5 levels of performance traction control, Android Auto/Apple Carplay, etc. Plus, as an added bonus, at 6'7" tall, I can actually fit in it with a helmet on! So, when the Supra came out at ~$10,000 more and yet was slower, had less room (ironic that I can fit in my nearly 50 year old 240Z but not this), and fewer features, I had zero regrets about not waiting.

Now, I am looking for a fun weekend car and I am considering a Mustang GT. I rented one on vacation and was thoroughly impressed by how far American cars have come. Like you said, performance per dollar ratio is through the roof. Additionally, a lot of the American sports cars still offer a manual option as they should. Glad you are enjoying the Camaro. I hope my Stang is just as rewarding.

    So many excuses from Toyota: first the vents were removable for racing, now they are homage to the racing variant. Latest excuse: "We didnt make any money off our older sportscars", yet Toyota is still one of the most profitable car companies in the world, and they especially were in the 90s, at their sports car peak. Toyota has developed a loyal fanbase because of their reliability and leading engineering, it is what guides purchases from my generation today. If they want to sacrifice that for the near term profits/risk, that is short sighted and ultimately they will lose customers.

You're getting a car that's, for the 2021 model year, making about 440bhp, last year's model was 1 second off of the M4's time at VIR and faster than the M2, it's got a version of iDrive that's better than the newest version, and it's more comfortable enough to live with everyday than any of the American sports cars. GM has economies of scale on their side and they already make their own sports cars, neither of which are something Toyota is in a position to leverage. The C7 Corvette US sales alone match worldwide sales numbers of the FRS/BRZ/86 combined, despite being significantly more expensive. GM also already has the tooling and space to facilitate the new Corvette by converting the old one where Toyota would have to either massively expand operations (expensive and would push any vehicle with the performance envelope they were looking for beyond a reasonable price point) or axe an existing, profitable product line, to make the tooling and space available for a product that would likely be less profitable. Rather than take risks like that, Toyota chose to leverage existing manufacturers and product branding to make a sports car with the Toyota name a reality.

Yes, Fiat gave them a suitcase full of money to borrow it for the 124 Spyder, but even if you make that argument, Mazda and Fiat COMBINED are still MUCH smaller than Toyota. Toyota absolutely COULD have easily afforded to build this car themselves, but they didn't have the nerve. They should be EMBARRASSED that their halo car is designed and built by BMW. It's inexcusable.
      That said, I'm glad the BMW Supra and Z4 exist. 14:12 If you're in Europe, you guys should check out the Alpine A110. Its a midengined sportscar priced similarly to this Supra and the 718 Cayman. It weighs 2400lbs, has an all aluminium construction including the front+rear double wishbone suspension that is intentionally set to allow pitch+roll, 205/40 front and 235/40 rear tyres. Think of it as a slightly more powerful Mazda MX-5 or Subaru BRZ. BUT, even if they've recently unveiled the more 'hardcore' A110 S model, they don't come with a manual (granted, it may be decent dual clutch transmission but it ain't PDK levels of excellent) and it uses a turbocharged 4 cylinder from a Renaultsport Megane. The build quality isn't the best either, but for the price you pay, you'll tell that they've spent most of their R&D budget on the chassis design - so many UK-based journalists have praised it and some even bought it for that matter. Dan Prosser (journo on EVO Magazine, Pistonheads, Autocar, Car Gurus UK and @drivenation_ on Instagram), Gordon Murray and James May own one. Despite it being no manual, the 2400lbs weight and its eagerness to rotate/trail-brake makes it really worthwhile to test it out. It has similar power-to-weight ratio to the Supra, although we all know by now that the B58 engine has a whole lot more potential with the aftermarket than the A110's 4 cyl, even with the help of Litchfield's Stage 1 upgrade.

    • @MrColourclassic
      @MrColourclassic 5 лет назад +16

      @Charlie Vetsworth And yet Porsche has just offered the 2020 911 Carrera with a 7 speed manual. For chasing lap times a DCT is superior (which this BMW also doesn't have) - for pure driving enjoyment a manual is where it's at. I've owned a ZF equipped performance car - it's good, but it's nowhere near as engaging as driving with a clutch pedal.
