- We review and celebrate the R35 Nissan GTR, a car that was in prototype form in 2001 and has had a long 14-year run. The R35 has widely been known for performing well ahead of its time. On the Heels of the Nissan Z Proto we attempt to tell the story of what makes it unique and how it has shaped the future of performance cars. Do they actually know why this car is great? probably not. if anything its a little overrated and their are a lot of other cars that would destroy the past models, the r35 is not though it is a force to be reckoned with.

Tamura San's interview is such a refreshing look into the thought process of this car. I think being able to see the intention of design from the designers and engineers itself really helps cut through the repetitive stat chasing mentality and shine a light on the personality that the car was given. I'm about as far from a Nissan fan as it gets but the respect I have for the GTR and the team behind it is incalculable.

Yeah. I love nothing about this car. DSG. Heavy. Nissan. The looks. The interior. But as a usable, daily sports car for the rainy PNW... I'm just head over heals for it. I can't really explain it. It's my next car. Saving now.

I just never get tired of the stoic Japanese demeanor were used to seeing shattering the second they can express the passion for their work. Pride in their work makes the car better ☺️
He has 20 years of experience with this project, and his perspective into the GT-R is another reason on why we should appreciate designers and engineers for the work they do to make the vehicles we drive today.
I’m with you on all points. The GT-R is such an outlier from a manufacturer of stupefyingly boring cars, and it got that way because the engineers were put in charge of its development. Likewise, when it came to presenting the car to the automotive press, Nissan wisely kept their marketing minions muzzled and once again, let the engineers do the talking. Mark and Jack took the cue at the end and let the CAR do the talking.

That's because it contains exactly what you said it does. Facts. The popular YT car channels are entertainment and giveaways. Channels like SG and myself that show working on things, factual comparison, mechanical stuff are not paid much attention too. Just how it is lol
I don't get it, either. That's why I not only like, but comment on practically every video SG puts out. That combination of likes and comments is pure gold to their stats. Seriously, who else would do such a deep dive on a car that most car channels reviewed and then forgot about ten years ago? Plus, the video quality is amazing. I had to pause the video to actually do some work. It was a close-up of Marks face, and you could count his eyelashes, the videography was so good. The only other car channel that comes close is Jason Camissa on Hagerty. Think of the budget they have.

I still have my 2013 GTR and I will never get rid of it. I have always wanted a GTR and when I finally was able to purchase it I was beside myself. I couldn’t believe I had this icon and legend in my garage. Even in 2022 it still turns heads. I personally met Mr. Tamura and he signed my engine cover.
The lovely attention to detail is the best thing about this channel.

Imagine creating something as your manifesto and the world reveres it as a legend. That’s satisfaction I think that transcends financial success.
As an engineer, he must be proud that he created the GT-R. And I think all Japanese car engineers are like that, but Mr. Tamura definitely has so much of an emotional connection to the GT-R, from the way he designed it, to how he programmed it, you name it. We, as consumers, never know how much work it is to put a car together, especially a sports car like this. But listening to Mr. Tamura's words about his work is truly special, and at the end of the day, he should be proud for giving us one of the most best and legendary sports cars to this day.
I owned a 2017 GTR and you guys put into words everything I felt using it as my daily driver. Excellent video. Yes, you should be getting paid for this!

Take a couple of Dramamine and watch an episode of Schmee and one of Supercar Blondie, and you’ll understand the mentality of the most popular car channels: They are designed to appeal to morons. Going by the comments, their audiences seem to be adolescent males who, thankfully, do not yet have a driver’s license. And there are a LOT of this viewer type.
RUclips is owned by Google, and to this vastly wealthy tech giant, the only thing that matters is numbers. Big audiences for RUclips channels mean more eyes on Google-powered screens, and more ad revenue. (I pay $15/month for RUclips Premium and could not imagine sitting through ads.)
Mark and Jack talk far too much and most of what they say would go right over the head of your typical car channel viewer. As is happening to the best communicators, whether they be writers or film makers or RUclips presenters, the race to the bottom by sleazy and transparently phony competitors is making the professionals’ comparatively small audiences less appealing to Google, the publisher. And so like all us motorheads, the Geese are in danger of extinction.
I fear that RUclips’s dim future for quality content will cause our two favorite presenters to turn their considerable talents away from our shared passion. When and if that comes to pass, I won’t need a RUclips Premium account any more. I will not invest my precious time watching Doug Demuro. Instead you’ll find me in my BarcaLounger, reading 20-year-old back issues of Car and Driver.

I love how even after about 14 years people that test cars for a living can be genuinely taken back or even in awe of the brutality of its speed. Both from a start and the way it comes out of corners. The car has held up in a way no car essentially unchanged should not. The subtle changes over its life cycle has kept it viable. What a car. Legend.

I remember being sick and staying home from school when I was 10 and seeing the episode of Top Gear where Jezza was racing the train in Japan. Now I'm 23 and they're still making the same car.

That ending was just beautiful. I would be very proud to say it is my life’s work. This car changed the sports and supercar landscape forever.
I actually feel your drive was at the best time of the year. These cars love cold dense air. My Gen 2 NSX feels great on winter tires, no slipping around in wet conditions. Nissan should be applauded for investing year after year in incremental improvements. The factory the GT-R is built in also produces the Infiniti Q50. My Infiniti Q50S Hybrid AWD is almost 8 years old and close to 100K miles and it is still great.
Also sorry to come in again, but I just wanna thank you for doing your due diligence, you are the first auto journalist to actually give them credit for the annual updates, most journalist just b**** about how old the car is like it's a 2005-2019 Nissan frontier as if changes were not made to this car, the horsepower grew significantly for the class, I mean it doesn't get any more credible than this I appreciate your dedication and unbiased review
Exactly. The frontier is a completely different car and honestly trucks don’t evolve that much any ways so terrible to compare that to this which is a passion project that has gotten better every year

Well the Italians, Brits and Germans do it. They all take engineering to an even higher level and make even superior cars. Japanese are just more dramatic about the amount of effort they put into things they do, and like to over-exaggerate things a lot. That's why you'll hear their sushi masters say it takes 20 years to learn how to prepare sushi rice, or other ridiculous claims.

@@bobbybooshay5854 It is true the GTR blew the competition out of the water in 2007. Now in 2021 I'm not so sure. With every iteration it got more expensive and the cabin has not kept up with the price tag. I love everything about it except the cabin. Some of those buttons just look super low rent, worse than my S2000 which has a period feel to it as well but in a better way imho.

I absolutely loved my 2013 GTR, it brought me a ton of joy and I loved just randomly flooring it around town and getting that buzz from the raw speed. I notice with many of my cars though that it began to just sit in the garage and never be driven while I kept driving my old cheap Hondas from way back in the day. I let it go last year to chase my childhood dream and buy my own airplane!! One day I will probably buy another GTR but when I realized I wasn't driving it anymore and it was just collecting dust it had to go to fuel my only childhood dream!! I do hope they make an R36 but who knows in today's world. Keep up the great videos!

the r35 GTR is a LEGEND. deserves it place in automotive history. it forced all the manufacturers to step up their game. specifically Porsche. this thing spanked the 997.1 turbo so bad
I first saw the R35 in person at a track event in Texas back in 2013. I was blown away, as well as much of the competition, by several R35 GTRs that attended that day. It was amazing and surreal at the same time. The R35 is an amazing piece of engineering and tech.
I agree man, if you ever get a chance to drive one, I definitely recommend it. It is an amazing machine.
It's so cool to see how "ahead of its time" this car was at launch and how Nissan kept working on the platform to keep it relevant and "current" to the extent it is possible. Even if this lost the "70k 911 turbo fighter" that it had at launch, it's still an amazing piece of engineering.

I'll go ahead and say this is peak Geese. This is the best video they've ever done. The GT-R gets so much undue hatred, just because it was the most wanted car of a generation. I can't imagine people watching this video and not wanting to sell body parts to get one of these all-time classics.

For whatever reason, the 2020+ models just sit around. '18-'19 are just completely gone but I imagine that just has to do with the latest wheel design looking kinda bad. 19' would be the year to own since that's when they finally resolved the noisy bellhousing issue.

One thing I will say about this car vs LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE is it sounds like a higher revving v6 but it doesn't blow out your eardrums and it doesnt gurgle and fart all over you and and the sound is authentic vs being some over the top noise machine. That right there makes me like this more before even getting in it

This gave me a new appreciation for the R35. It didn't get "old," rather it ended up being more interesting than the newer competition thanks to Nissan's obsession with improving it, while keeping some edges.

I’ve always been amazed at how good this car looks in person, they look like the bullet train of the sports car world!
It looks totally unlike anything else. Real motorheads will know what it is.
I'm 6'-3" and the legroom is one huge plus with this beast. I rented one at a track in Las Vegas and was super comfortable, and there was plenty of room for the helmet as well.
PS 1 "Gran Turismo" made me fall in love with so many cars!! Rx-7, 3000 gt, Subaru wrx sti, Evolution even honda Prelude!!!

Yep home grown twin turbo six cylinder with a manual transmission for $45k fully loaded. It's the old Z32 all over again, even the price is similar to the 1996 model before correcting for inflation! I really hope Nissan sends out the fully loaded manual models as the press fleet.
