2021 Toyota Supra vs 1994 Toyota Supra // JDM Legends Face Off
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2020
- This is the new 2021 Toyota Supra, and it costs $67,690 CAD. Strangely, so does the old MKIV from 1994. Both share a name, but do both deserve the same reputation? Considering that there are 27 years between these two, can the old one stack up, and can the new one continue the legacy? James and Thomas jump behind the wheel of both to experience them and discuss them inside and out. Watch and enjoy!
Huge thank you to Ceramic Pro Vaughan, who allowed us to look way more 'street' than we deserve by facilitating us on their location. / ceramicpro_vaughan
And a massive thank you to Joe for letting us feature his MKIV!
And thank you to Vik and Miguel for coming out and being mad lads.

Pros: the old one won’t depreciate. Cons: you can’t find the old one.
I know a guy 😁 ruclips.net/video/Op4JWf25uus/видео.html
What are you talking about? There’s a bunch of them on auto trader all the time, even right now.
@@JacesOwnWorld There were only about 4,000 twin-turbo 6-speed LHDs sold in the U.S., which are the really valuable ones. The rest are naturally aspirated models or JDM RHD imports.
Their ia tons of old.supras their just expensive most costing. More than the new one
They could certainly lose value, so same difference as depreciation
Congrat to the owner of the original Supra - great closing statement! 👍
Very honest and true
it resonated in my head so much... im off to window shop
That's how I feel about my Land Cruiser. Even if I was Zuckerberg rich my 1989 FJ62 would be the one I'm always looking at.
Loved that closing statement.
That’s not the original
The mk5 is such a Toyota move and I love it.
People say that they wanted to see an entirely bespoke Supra, but they won't really buy a supra for 130000$
Honestly tho, I feel like it could have been just a little bit more Toyota. I get the money argument. I’m not arguing against it. But still, they could have at least developed their own engine. Or they could have made the interior cheaper and given the damn thing a manual so they could lower the starting price. They could have done a lot of things they didn’t do. Besides, the cost of development argument isn’t as good when we scale it against what was arguably the car of 2020. The Corvette C8 went mid engine, and it turned up a profit. The damn thing had 2 get a new platform, completely reworked engineering, and different materials, and after all of that, it STILL managed 2 maintain its absolute bargain of a price. Toyota is a much bigger company than GM is. What’s 2 say they couldn’t make a Supra completely in-house and still make a profit at a fair price point? Because rite now, Nissan has absolutely embarrassed Toyota with the Z. And I no, it’s unfair 2 compare the 2, given that the Z had a platform that was perfectly useable. But the point of the car was 2 hit Toyota where it hurt, and that they did. The Supra was inspired by Supras of old, but the Z was more inspired by old Zs than the Supra was inspired by old Supras. And it’s a shame 2, since Toyota knows how 2 make a good driver’s car. Just look at the GR Yaris. It took a boring and run of the mill car and turned it into a little pocket rocket that feels more like an Integra than the new Integra will probably feel like, because that’s what it is. It’s Toyota’s Integra, and it’s incredible 4 it. I feel like the Supra, while well intentioned, missed the mark because it didn’t FEEL like a Supra. It’s still a good car, don’t get me wrong. But it doesn’t feel like a Supra. Perhaps a next generation, modernized 2JZ would have fixed things up a little. Perhaps it needed a little bit more. Who knows
@@mrsoisauce9017 eh. no one really buys sport cars from toyota tho. sure there’s always someone but for the most part, very little. lexus rcf, terrible sale. lexus lc, an amazing car, very low sale. even the legendary lfa had a hard time selling at first. all of those are are priced similarly to the original supra as well…with a lexus badge. makes you wonder how much nissan get we would see if they priced it around 40-60k
To be fair, a mid-90s MKIV Supra would be nearly $100k in inflation adjusted dollars to 2022. They were fairly expensive for their time.
1994 supra had only few competitors back in time and it was Toyota. Today there is heaps competitors for new Supra and much better price and faster too
@@KaxziJJ If u wont gonna argue and just say no sense stuff why u do u even take ur time to comment?
The closing statement hits the soul for MKIV owners. You'd have to own one to know how true this statement was.

By the way supra 2020 it's the same 2021
Don't believe the company only advertised
The outro of the video summed up the main difference perfectly and is exactly what makes a car special or timeless.
Growing up in the 90s I have a soft spot for that era of cars, something more visceral to them.
I've only ever owned American performance cars...Mustangs, Camaros and Corvettes. I am awaiting delivery of the Supra this week. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and try something different and I loved the car in the little time I had with it.
Great video guys.
Hey! I'm the original NA owner of that 94 Supra. I brought it into Canada from Japan in 2010 and still have a good amount of the original paperwork and parts. So happy to see it again, reach out if you'd like!
Where do you stay at? Toronto? I hope to see it one day if you’re around Toronto
saw it for sale now. Wish I had $50k to buy it. Its a beauty!
It is now up for sale for 62K in Barrie!
Shame that due to Japan's regulations, the version from Japan had smaller turbos and it pushed out only 270ish HP, the USDM one makes 320hp. Eitherway, easy fix =) Original supra has the best sound and was designed way ahead of its time. 1994 and looks BEAUTIFUL still.
@@davis7323 it was pretty much built for the 90s. I dont know everything about them but what I have heard is they are pretty much a 90s car. Similar to some of the porche cars from the 50s when they used brand new fiber glass. They were not really ahead of their time but they were writing their own story.

The ending sentence was super deep guys.. love this episode, I would go for the old Supra, that is what the name Supra epitomizes
Had me in tears over a car! How lame is that.
What the supra onwer said is enough to make a grown man cry
I didn't cry. So I'm a boy

That last word from 1994 guy "what is your dream car ? Shows the key i own it"
After hearing it I got goosebumps
I tip my hat to him😊
Once you own a Supra you kind of just fall deeply in love. 😭❤️It's pretty crazy.
Ok redditor
Great review guys! I love your approach to reviewing cars and the genuine sense that your commentary isn't heavily scripted. It's also nice to see our lovely Ontario country roads as the backdrop. For me, the Mark IV will always represent what a Supra should be. If you take the badges off the new one it could be the product of almost any modern manufacturer...zero identity! Sad actually..:(
Wow when he was taking those hard pulls to 7k rpm I literally felt it through the screen... Spiritual...
The old one is expensive because you can drive it with the windows open
Saw another video where they fixed it with an additional piece in front of the window to direct the air.
easily fixed... they have kits that will take care of it for cheap
@@TheDailyDriver I know that but it's no excuse for the manufacturer to not fix a massive flaw
Honestly I have yet to drive a sports car under 100k that doesn't have the buffeting issue. No idea why everyone complains about it all the time, it's kinda the territory of a sports car. I'm not driving a luxury Audi or Mercedes.
@@WildKarrade I have yet to drive one that does. I'm not sure you really understand this. It's not comparable to a 4 door with a rear window open. This is a 2 door that you can't roll down the windows in. I've never had the problem that this car faces.
Am I the only one who rush in anticipation of them drag racing these cars🤔
No you arent 😔

eyad Hossam TheStraightPipes doesn’t even compare.
@@eyadhossam8108 The StraightPipes are a joke. They have a limited vocabulary of good, and okay. They just call specs of the car they're "reviewing" as if off a paper. There's no emotion or connection of the car they cover. And one of them can't stop jerking off over his Prowler in every video.
I'm glad that everyone is still ignoring the mk3, I need those prices low for when I buy my obtainable dream car
Psssst
It's an underappreciated car, except for the head gasket issue. I had a black '87 and loved it. Super comfortable highway cruiser with a handsome profile.
The 1JZ and 7M are still great engines. They're no 2JZ but they still produce a respectable amount of power, even by today's standards. Enthusiasts mainly put them down since they're not as tunable as the 2JZ but if you don't get too crazy with the power mods and keep up the maintenance, they still make for good performance engines.
all old supras was good
mk5 piece of trash
I want a mk2, still pretty cheap
Most attempts at RUclips humor do not work well, but you guys are genuinely funny.
Love the summary, nice job!
Thomas' horn impression at 18:03 is impressively spot on
I'm sure you've already thought of this but you should absolutely make a video comparing the orininal AE86 to the new AE86/BRZ
The new 86 is spiritually a decent one to carry the old 86, if only toyota keep up the corolla badge also since the old one is basically a high performance corolla
@@ramadhanisme7 Cant even really says those cars were high performance. They were just made a martyr like every thing else that rolled out of Japan in the 80's and 90's
@@carsmusicandclothing7066 lol my thoughts exactly. Nothing really performance about that. In this part of the world the top of the range came with a "twincam" badge which became the Rsi (1997-1999) then the Rxi (2000- 2003).. those were and are still performance daily driver vehicles here. Absolutely our own piece of highly beloved Japanes muscle in the most southern part of africa.. idk if the rest of the world got them or loved them like here.
The models following only had "sprinter" which meant almost nothing to us 🙄
The current 86 should always have been considered a revival of the Celica. A performance version of the Corolla would be welcome, Civic Si-like, call that the 86 if you want.
@@nthgth the current 86? There is no Celica at this point in time so what Celica would you be comparing it to? Definitely not the FWD version. I think I don't understand your point here. They are comparing current to past versions of cars in these videos, not different cars
That end quote with the music and the Supra passing by... I'm not crying you are!
The last few minutes hit home. Sure I can buy a new car but there is something about my old 90d Toyota that brings joy and experiences I don’t feel like I get out of many modern cars.
Last line- That's a line every man dreams of saying.
THat is the Goal when they say what is your dream car and you hand over your keys to your CRX, your NSX , and your SUPRA you sir are on high ground. Very priceless why I own just about all of them expect the 911 Turbo S and the newer NSX once complete I am done!!

I have owned an MKIV Turbo and SE. Really appreciated this video! 👍🙂
Excellent Video guys! I appreciate your comparison's, but the quote from the Mk IV owner at the very end of the video pretty much sums it up for me, and I couldn't agree more. The Mk IV is an ICON status car like no other, except maybe the LFA, which you also mentioned in this vid. Isn't it interesting that both these Icons are Toyotas? Can I throw the toyota crown in as well, just to drive my point further?
Congrats to the owner of the original Supra - great closing statement!
24:18 this is the difference, one is dream, other is just another sports car in sports cars.
btw waiting for 400z
In my opinion, the mark 4 is a 90's sportscar, a very good one. But it's still a sports cat
The mk4 was a GT car designed to go against the exotic gt cars from the likes of ferrari and Aston Martin, even the old 8 series from BMW. It wasnt as good as the exotics but it was wayyy cheaper and better value for money. Kind of like buying a mustang gt instead of an m3 is better value for money when it comes to performance but you lose the luxury.
@@U--Bravo Yes it's a very good cat
@@U--Bravo in the 90's perspective the a80 supra has the on par performance with the "supercar" but from gt car such as aston martin db, porsche 911, ferrari (i forgot the model) before 575 maranello and that's why many praise it, while it's rival such as gtr or nsx keep up with the supercar class the new supra downgrade it into pathetic sport car that can't keep up with r35 gtr or new nsx and that is why many japanese car enthusiast purist think that this new supra is a blasphemy to the old supra legacy
some future offspring of yours will be saying that about the 2021 Toyota Supra; while comparing it to the 2047 Toyota Supra, which is just another soulless sports car in sports cars; can you imagine they did away with steering wheels? you like, neural net the car into corners... meh... Call me a Luddite but sometimes the old ways are better
I had a 91 BMW 325i back in the mid-90's. Manual transmission. The sound was glorious driving that little car and it was so much fun. Thomas used the term "organic", exactly right, cars then were part of our ecosystem and we connected with them and they with us. The cars now are more distant and disconnected automatons. That's the difference to me and why I prefer the older cars. Like that cheerleader you dated in high school. A good wife is irreplaceable like a decent modern car but, oh the memories....
Love that he kept it stock and have nothing wrong with that. The only thing is I do think that a lot of the a80 supras legacy and the reason it is so famous is because of its tunability, so I feel like that should always be a part of the difference between old and new.
But the thing is the new one is also very tunable, the b58 is probably the best engine to have come out in the last few years and it is known for its tuning capability.
That 25 year old supra has aged amazingly. Still looks great today

Such a well made video! I honestly think it's a tough decision which Supra is better after noticing what features they both had. They both had their pros and cons (examples: cup holders, fake vents, small storage space).
When comparing the handling of a 25 year old car to a brand new one, you need to take into account the condition of the suspension components and if they've been renewed recently. It's a night and day difference with bushing upgrades, control arm replacements etc. Great point of view nonetheless.
Also it’s 25 year old technology mint condition or not
Also tire compound.

The production value of your videos is amazing, I’m blown away. A80 Supra is an amazing car and I miss that straight six sound and just seeing them on the road. From a time when Toyota and Nissan and Honda and Mitsubishi threw caution to the wind and built these amazing cars. I miss those days.
There are so many stories about how people feel about the IV. The "Fast and the Furious" is the other spectrum of the car. It's the legendary 2JZ with great tuning possibilities. What Toyota didn't make was a rocket car, they made an iconic Gran Tourer. It was a midsize, comfortable, and fast car to enjoy driving across the country. I think the Lexus LC500 comes to my mind when I think about the older Supra (without the larger price tag). The Supra I, II, III, and IV were all different cars. Maybe, Toyota will morph the next Supra into a GT from the LC500.
M3RRIH3W13 Nah I don’t think so, Toyota is so greedy and corporate nowadays, they’re way too cheap to actually make enthusiast based cars, they only care about making cars that sell to the masses, the BMW Supra is a supreme example of their disconnect with their true fans and literally made a car that no one asked for with a Supra badge on it, they pay someone else to build their performance cars because they don’t want to invest the money into a performance car that wont sell a million units, they only care about the bread and butter, corolla, Camry and crossovers.
@@jaredchampagne2752 I believe that you are correct. The Supra sat on the shelf for a long time. Crossovers and econoboxes get all the money.

One of friend just bought imported a supra out here with a single turbo, and I can't seem to get over the fact that the old supra is a boat and it understeers a lot until you put some money into the suspension.
But one thing is that the engine feels magnificent, the timing between which the turbo spools is just perfect and yeah other than the fact that it cost him an arm and a leg to buy it, the car is just fabulous, I'm not a fan boy or something but still the engine is perfect.
That’s why I love my S2000 owning a rare car is special and the value just keeps going up.
Please tell me someone else caught the "overnight parts from JAPAN" reference.
I have no idea what that is

Nothing like throttle house and coffee in the morning. 👌🏽
Bro this is the coolest intro to a video ever 😂
Claps for the creativity ❤️
From a purely financial view, the mk4 is a better buy because it most likely will continue to appreciate in value. Great video!
"it looks like a C4 Vette" (the interior)... EVERY JDM fan has started typing...
Nah, 90s JDM cars did have very shitty interiors tbh. Those were the time drivers careless about how interior looked.
I imagine his head being blown off right when he said “it’s like a C4 (BOOOM!!!!)
@@weakneerose7614 Actually you're a bit wrong. As someone who owns a '90 Toyota Corolla, I will say I love the interior. Driver-centric and all! I specifically love it for that. I'M the driver, I'M in control of the car. The passenger is just the person getting a ride. They're not important. I DON'T want them to mess with my radio, or fucc with my AC, or anything. They're not important enough for that. They're THE PASSENGER, they don't need to concern themself with any of it, it's MY car. And it's wonderfully selfish and driver-centric. And I adore that! After all most driving of '85-'96 Toyota's is done for the enjoyment of the driver.
@@Dominik189 nobody cares about how much of a narcissist you are.
@@mesta9997 and yet you cared enough to respond! :D Fu Fu Fu, I'm honoured that you felt moved by my "narcism" that you just had to point it out.
That last statement... my god it was cool. Very well said
Problem with icon car prices is most ppl have a limit. But ppl who get given money don't. And They drive these niche markets.
But this was a glorious video
