I once drove a c5 z06 with 10 year old tires on the highway. I was in 3rd doing about 60, dipped into the throttle and the back end wanted to come around. I took the next exit and swapped seats with its owner. Old tires are legit death traps. I wouldn't of even tried this in the wet with a Ford GT. That's just bonkers. And you can't fake that expression when James spun it.
I bought a bone stock Z28 LS1 with tires like that. Leave a stop light at idle and it would break the tires loose. I went to out tires on it immediately. That crap was nuts.
Paul Walker is dead, because he was driving aggressively with 10+ year old tires on his Carrera GT. These numbskulls are very lucky. Not very sound judgement in their part or on the part of the car’s owner.
My neighbor dailyed one of these and drove it out from Toronto to California. He even parked it on the street. When a storm came through town I offered him my garage and he took me up on it. Best car that ever sat in my garage. I just looked at it in awe.
Seriously you guys need to review this car on a sunny day with new tires. Would make a massive difference in your opinion of it. The GT has a ton of mechanical grip and it has predictable handling when the rear does start to step out.
We're just glad you didn't bin it against the wall James! My backside definitely puckered up watching that in anticipation since I know how scary that really is (especially when you *do* bin it)
Ford GT demands some really retired racing drivers owning it.. Not hot blooded new gen people who ve been spoiled by modern comfort amenities and Safety Nets
The sheer terror on their faces when the car kicks out makes you realize what a beast this car really is. As well as the amount of talent racers had to control these monsters at the limit all the time when racing them.
I am definitely not interested in driving the ford gt after seeing this. Seems like there is a reason why all the owners of cars like this rarely drive them and race tracks are full of old BMWs and actual real racecars... The ford gt and similar cars are more like an NFT or a nice painting or an expensive watch or whatever else people like to collect to show status...
@@otakarlibal so you mean a collector car is a collector. 😑 Haha jk. I know what you mean but it is a car that should be in museums. Not trashed at the race track. U know those mini heart attacks you have when ur car suddenly gets away from u without you intentionally doing it? Yea I had those heart attacks when watching Thomas and James losing the rear end of the GT. Also GG James for saving that half a million dollar spin
Fun fact: that happens because the brain has "mirror neurons" that react when you're doing something AND when you're just observing that it. It kind of thinks you're doing the thing you're watching
About 20 years ago I used to own an 86 Camaro with a 350 and I was coming off an exit. Some guy decides to pull right out in front of me from a full stop and I was driving like a moron. Had to do an evasive slalom in the rain and almost lost it twice. Hate those mini heart attacks.

I worked at a Ford dealership in high school - we got three GT's. I was very lucky to take one out one night and go through the gears in an industrial complex that was behind our dealership. Savage car. ANYONE who says 500 hp isn't enough needs to experience a flat foot in one. The GT is an absolute beast to drive.
Well imagine putting 550 whp onto a miata. That miata if drives properly, can smoke almost any cars on the street. It's really about power to weight ratio. One professional driver said, "horsepower sells cars, but torque wins races."
The chemistry between these two is almost as exciting as the cars they review. It makes it worth watching. Had no idea he would prank the guy but I love it
@@budthecyborg4575 Where are we getting that it had old tires though? [edit: oops. I CLEARLY missed where they CLEARLY said it, but it did have to be pointed out to me. derp.] They only seemed to mention that they could no longer get the original tires and had to use something else. Oh, actually looking at the tire, which is I think Pirelli P Zero Rosso's - doesn't matter if they're new. High performance summers on less than ~55 degrees F and wet pavement is 100% a recipe for disaster.
Damn, that spin out and the terror on James face really hit me. You can hear the adrenaline surging and heart racing in his breathing when he comes to a full stop. You know he had to have been close to just passing out when he got out of that car. lol Good job on controlling the spin!
At first I thought it was kinda playing it up for the video. But then I thought about how much of a rush I get from a spin in a tight race in iRacing, which is fake, and was like nah nvm that makes sense
This is the most entertaining car review I've seen in a while. The cinematic quality, the great hosts, the emotion and the beautiful car are just amazing. Great job showing this car. Together with the older Porsche 911, the Lamborghini Miura and the Mercedes 300 sl gullwing, this GT is absolutely at the peak of cardesign.
I agree with you on both the review and the cars but I want to add the Jaguar E type, Alfa Romeo 8C, Ferrari 250 Testa Rosa and the Corvette Stingray (1963) to the list as well. They are such amazing car designs that can be admired across generations.
Man, the way the moment built-up and then seeing the raw fear from James was the best possible way to experience this car from a screen. Glad no one was hurt, including the car.
This is my favorite video. Watching James in the raw moment and his emotional, yet composed way of handling the situation. As Thomas states, he is a legend. You guys are my favorite and I frequently find myself rewatching your videos. I was/am a huge fan of donut media’s up to speed, but you guys have shifted into my top spot. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you.
It is friggin gorgeous, like nothing else. The fact it is so good at being a race car, and so beautiful, is amazing. BTW, thanks for sharing the genuine reaction to the spin. Anyone who has done that was right there with you, and knows that dread. All respect for the honesty.
The little detail that gets my attention is that this is not a race car! It's a flat out gorgeous, very fast street machine that resembles an old race car. The race car was faster, lower, lighter, louder and raced against Ferrari (among many others) on the Mulsanne. Consider the conditions at 3am, at 200 plus mph for 3 1/2 miles (with NO chicane) with a line of 3' diameter trees on each side of the road. They have a white painted band about 4' high, around the bottom of the tree trunk. Some of your competition is running near your speed but the ones that will scare the crap out of you are those little 1 liter French cars that are also allowed to compete, together with everyone else!! Back in the '60s, their lights barely showed to the other drivers. They might have, on a really good run attained 110 mph, while the leaders were closing on them with a difference of nearly 100 mph, in the dark, with 1960 vintage lights!! I've been on the Mulsanne straight in 1964, in the daylight, and knowing what conditions the racers encountered still gave me chills. I still clearly remember those white painted trees that seemed to go on forever (They looked like oak trees but I don't know what they actually are. They're still there.). At racing speeds they just looked like a really big picket fence!! I spent 10 years working on a crash truck crew for SCCA and having seen what the drivers experience on our much shorter courses and far shorter races now, I have immense respect for the people who competed back then. The drivers on a front line team usually set the pace, but the other guys, on the "back-marker" teams were on the same race course with far less well prepared cars. They had to work just that much harder to be competitive... and to survive.
OMG. That was so scary to watch and I could not even imagine sitting in the driving seat and spinning out like that in such a legendary machine that's worth half a million Canadian dollars, I would've shitted myself for sure. When modified, these cars have been breaking & holding standing mile records for over a decade. That body shape just slices through the air like a knife. It has a permanent spot on the Mt. Rushmore of speed kings tbh. I do believe multiple GT's have cleared 275 mph in the standing mile, and I believe the record is just a hair beyond 300 mph, also done by a GT.
@@rolux4853 You do know what "racecar" means, don't you? The Ford GT was meant to be an homage to the GT40 that won the 24 Hours of Le Manns multiple times... which is held on a *racetrack* , meaning that the entire heritage of this car's name is based around it's ability to corner extremely well, as well as rocket down straights.
@@moogle68 the most popular RACING series in America is Drag RACING as far as I can remember. There are hardly any corners involved. Then there’s NASCAR racing. With the exception of the odd round course not much real cornering involved there. And then there’s Le Mans, where all the people that never experienced that track besides in Gran Turismo only talk about the Mullsane Straight. Which back then didn’t even have the chicane in it’s middle. So again it comes down to going straight for America..
Man, I was driving my Charger R/T on wet/slick roads on winding Texas back roads one night and my car gave out and I went sideways for like a full 2-3 seconds. It’s crazy because when the GT gave out on James & Thomas it brought back the sheer fear and terror I felt in those few seconds which were the longest few seconds of my life. Top notch video guys
it was at that moment it reminded me of Eleanor driving in Gone in 60 Seconds, probably similar engines in both the cars. that motor sound when he switches gears toward the end in this video
This reminds me of driving my first car in the snow. Ford Fairlane with a torquey 302 on basically bald tires. This is exactly what it was like. I spun it going through an S at about 40 mph. I've done more dangerous things at much higher speeds than that, but that was for some reason the scariest moment for me. I think it has to do with the feeling of not having any control at all.
Snow is a whole different monster. If you spin, you just have to let your car do its thing and go with the flow of the spin. There's nothing else you can do. You can't be a hero and save it--not enough grip. Just take your foot off the pedal, turn the wheel with the spin, and pray to god you don't hit the median.
Yep, still my favorite supercar to this day. This is it for me my end game. The looks the sounds they are perfect imo. Thank you for more fabulous content on GT.
The 2005 GT is the 4th rarest American vehicle I've ever seen. Only the Dodge Demon, 2017 Viper ACR, and C7 ZR1 Corvette are less common of the ones I've seen.
A Ford GT drove by me once and I felt it's thunderous power to my core. It wasn't just loud for the sake of being loud like so many stupid ricer cars or harley davidson bikes these days. The Ford GT exuded the sound of real and authentic power. Something so rare these days.

But on the other hand if it was a great sunny day with new tiers and I was a trained professional I would be homered to give that car a try on a track.
I remember when this came out, I was ten. It was my dream car then and it still is now. I got to see one in my neighborhood one time and it was the coolest thing I've ever laid eyes on. Props to ford on this one, long live the Ford v8.

This is probably my all-time favorite dream car (yellow with black stripes please). A perfect combination of modernization and legacy. The design pays huge homage to the GT40, while also sufficiently modern and livable. The 2004-2006 Ford GT is probably my #1 "If I won the lottery" dream car. A Superformance GT40 would be a close 2nd.

I mean it was a foolish to: 1. go on a wet track 2. with crap tires 3. in a high-powered 4. rear-wheel drive supercar 5. with no traction control. Any one of those can easily spin you and they ticked all 5 of those boxes. It would have been shocking if they didn't spin the car.

My dad has the blue one with the white stripes, definitely a blast to drive. He was correct in saying that hitting 90 mph is second gear is no problem, the crazy thing is, even at that speed there are 4 more gears to go.
My '99 mustang gt was a manual without traction control and watching this reminds me of how careful I had to be with it in the rain. It would go sideways in the blink of an eye in first, second, or third depending on where you were in the rev range. It definitely taught me a lot about driving.
I had a 95 z28 with the 6 speed and had 4.11’s installed, all with no traction control. At 17 I almost lost it racing a 2011 v6 camaro in the rain. Learned my lesson that day 🤘
I can vouge for the 96-99 mustang gt getting crappy in rain. I had a green 98 that decided to break loose on a ĺightly damp road. Just giving it enough throttle to move down the road. If I would have been a normal driver it would have got totaled. Started sliding towards a house and I managed to correct the slide and push the clutch in to stop the wheel spin. Kept on moving like nothing ever happened.
I'd love to see you guys one day have another go at a Ford GT with some more modern tyres, tyres slightly older than the car probably contributed a lot to the death feeling. The engine was perfectly capable of 700hp even back then but I'd bet that was just way too much to ask from the tyres that were available in 2005.

Just found about this channel. I freaking love it! Very impressed by the production quality and the personality of the hosts, can't wait to watch more videos!
The Lauda driving technique would have greatly helped you tame the GT. You feather the throttle constantly testing the traction of every corner to determine when you are right at the edge but not over.
Yes, but also having proper safety gear and personnel, proper tires, knowledge of the track and dry pavement would gave gotten them confident enough to push the car to a speed where there’s enough down force to get you planted.
I bet even legends like Niki, Mansell or Senna in their golden era would be scared to drive such a car it in wet, with tires that are 17 years old, track covered in leaves and grease. Dont forget that this car has bit more power than original GT and supercharger which delivers torque more aggressively.
I’m so glad you guys got to review this car..... I used to work in the paint shop that did these cars in Troy. Mi. Saleen special vehicles was the place. I did all sorts of things from repairs, prep and priming of parts and occasionally some painting.

Between the 17 year old tires and inclement conditions and enthusiastic driving, I bet Hagerty (or any other insurance carrier) would not have paid out on a claim if you'd hit the wall that day. You guys were risking a lot by not rescheduling this to another day!
Yes, I know the episode was sponsored by Hagerty and insured, technically. But you can be sure they would use the policy conditions, exclusions and endorsements to avoid or minimize a claim, just like any insurance company. I have taken out Hagerty track day insurance before. I took a look and it looks like pretty simple, pretty comprehensive coverage with few exclusions. The Throttle House guys may have been OK. But a good lawyer would have a field day avoiding a $500K claim when the claimant is on video saying the the 17 year old tires are "hockey pucks" with "no grip". Whatever - love the videos!
@@benbrown5913 Hagerty is sponsoring the video and I assume arranged for the provision of the car and would have also okayed what could and could not be done so I am sure they would pay. Your situation and theirs isn't remotely the same.

I've been watching almost a dozen car enthusiasts channels over the past year as a dive back into this wild world and these guys surprised me. Rarely, if ever, do car enthusiasts talk about how dangerous certain cars are-almost to the point of recklessness. Now I love the idea of an analog, "driver car" as much as the next guy but when you are reviewing this type of vehicle I feel you should use Throttle House's formula here. This is a dangerous car. It can seriously injure or kill you if you make a seemingly minor error. I'm not saying people shouldn't drive these cars. I absolutely love the Ford GT. It is my favorite American supercar. Just be really damn careful. And do not drive with 17 year old tires on a Ford GT. As much as I loved this video I think they should have delayed it until new tires could be acquired. That being said this was beautifully filmed, with gutsy driving and even though the fear was real they kept their cool and didn't hurt anyone or damage the car. Plus I love that it’s your actual opinions and thoughts, not the manufacturer’s or parent companies. 👍🏻
The great thing about driving in the rain in a wide-open space is that it simulates driving in a skid pan. You will be able to simulate handling and drivability of the car at much lower speeds. Therefore you can teach yourself how the car is going to handle at 150 miles an hour, by going only 25 to 30 miles per hour. In essence, you can have fun. Rainy day, wide-open space perfect situation for a car like that.
I have had the same reaction as James before driving. Hit home...in a weird way...but also a reminder that you need skill to drive that beautiful machine. It's then all about the recovery and you aced it. Good work! Also, I think driving this car again in a dry place with proper tires would be amazing to do next!

I bought a garage queen C5 Z06 on 15 year old tires, the thing was a death trap until I got a new set
@@stgeorgee Paul wasn’t the one driving the Carrera GT, nor was it his. Wasn’t Pauls fault and that’s what makes it so tragic.
@@manlymantis101 I stand corrected on that point. However, the accident was still due to the tires; which was my point.

Do you guys have a CT4 Blackwing video coming?
The sheer terror on their faces when the car kicks out makes you realize what a beast this car really is. As well as the amount of talent racers had to control these monsters at the limit all the time when racing them.
And in the rain.
I am definitely not interested in driving the ford gt after seeing this. Seems like there is a reason why all the owners of cars like this rarely drive them and race tracks are full of old BMWs and actual real racecars...
It was pure luck and skills that you did not hit that wall. Mad respect guys that's why we love you.

Yeah going straight is cool, but have you ever tried cornering?

Learned my lesson that day 🤘
In the rain i used to drive my sn95 like an old lady.
I’ve never watch James and Thomas tame a beast before. After watching this video. I officially can say James and Thomas has TAMED a Beast. Well done boys.
The editing & videography on display in this episode is absolutely stunning. I really feel like I'm watching a 7-figure production budget show. The depth of color & refinement is phenomenal...just wow 🤯
That spun was handled like a true pro, great save James, I literally gasped and got scared for you, keep at it 🙌🏾
It was a controlled spin, it was scripted like that. They are amazing drivers and can handle anything
My neighbor has one of these, same red with racing stripes and the few times he’s given me rides I’ve never seen a car attract as much attention - and this is SoCa super car heaven - as this beast when you are riding in it. It is so raw, cramped and uncomfortable (I’m a strapping guy) and yet delightfully visceral with its sounds, smells and G-Forces. Beautiful super car and another great video from Throttle House.
For such a small team you guys do such an amazing job of video production. Thumbnail, cinematography, editing, grading, sound design top notch. Rock on.
Between the 17 year old tires and inclement conditions and enthusiastic driving, I bet Hagerty (or any other insurance carrier) would not have paid out on a claim if you'd hit the wall that day. You guys were risking a lot by not rescheduling this to another day!
Insurance paid out for poor decisions all the time. They wouldn't have even had it on the track without permission.
they are sponsoring by the insurance lmao.
15:05 One of the realest moments. His face as he spun. The fear. No production to evoke a response. Just real. Thank you James.
It really scared the shiet out of him, poor James
So much respect for actually driving the car and pushing as much as you could!
this is the most iconic car and video you guys have ever published. I now feel like this channel is complete. The Ford GT and its story have an incredible legacy.
Even watching this now, I am holding my breath as he takes those corners in the rain. When the "wipe out" happened, I think my heart skipped a beat.
“ that was very scary. I pooped my pants watching from a distance. “
Hahahahaha. You two are hilarious. And like the person said above me , you’re approaching the pinnacle of car show presenting, just like the trio of legends.
As a Canadian, I am very proud of both of you. Tons of love from Toronto. Keep it rolling boys and pointing straight would be preferable
Great video boys! Can you believe the orignial Ford GT had an average speed of over 125 mph (201 km/h) for the 1966 24 hr Le mans race. That's a total of 4824 km for a single race. That's bananas. Plus I can guarantee the original Ford GT was harder to drive than this one.
Brilliant how just as Thomas says "LFA" it appears on screen at 20:16; kudos to the editors for this masterpiece!
Man…. giving Karsten great footage of these beautiful cars, with rain, leaves, this track… is making him shine like no other editor I’ve seen. The team you have there; the two affable hosts, the videographers, and Karsten the editor is just pure perfection. This is why this channel is probably my FAVORITE automobile content of all time.
You can hear in his voice how much adrenalin is still going through james after the spin.
Amazing work guys, you've got one more subscriber.
Because this is in fact one of my top five favorite cars of all time I am extremely disappointed you guys didn’t have a dry track to rip around on. Seriously no joke I am completely bummed. 🥺🥺🥺
Always excellent content and still love how you guys deliver. As most have said, I felt that fear with James. His hands shaking after showed how genuinely that scared him. Your team does great work with the whole production. It’s amazing to see your growth from the early days.
"It's about Ken Miles away" I love you guys so much!
This. Pure gold.
I had to search for this comment, I can't believe more people didn't pick up on it.
These two guys at a level that from my personal preference I can say that this channel can be the new top gear.
I have had the same reaction as James before driving. Hit home...in a weird way...but also a reminder that you need skill to drive that beautiful machine. It's then all about the recovery and you aced it. Good work!
Also, I think driving this car again in a dry place with proper tires would be amazing to do next!
Timeless supercar, it’s got a vintage look inside and out that will never get old. Love it ❤️
