2020 Toyota Supra | A Legend Returns or A Me-Too Coupe?

  • The 2020 Supra isn't just a blast from the past, it's an honest-to-goodness Toyota sports car aimed directly at the Porsche Cayman. All the essentials are there for the Supra to be a hit. Inline 6 engine? Check. Rear wheel drive? Check. Small roadster proportions? You betcha. A sprinkle of BMW DNA? Why not? That's the biggest complaint from Supra purists, but I see that as an asset, not a detriment to the Supra's street cred. Let's find out why.

    The engineer at Toyota said point blank in an interview on TFL youtube channel, the partnership allowed Toyota to keep the price at $50k . So without BMW, Toyota would have to charge people close to 100k and take another 3-5 years. It's a win/win for Toyota and BMW. TOYOTA knows how to sell car and make cars. Toyota is pathological about reliability and simplicity. They spent countless of months abusing and refining the Supra and making sure the parts from BMW were up to Toyota Standards of reliability. You're getting 3 years of bumper to bumper quarrenty and you can extend it another 3 years. 6 YEARS OF FULL COVERAGE ON A CAR THAT DOES 0-60 IN 4 SECONDS FOR 50K!! this is CHEAPER THAN WHEN THE SUPRA FIRST LAUNCHED IN THE 90'S AND IT'S NOT MORE POWER. They learned from Honda's mistake when they were remaking the NSX. They took several years in engineering and spent hundreds of millions, only to re-scrap and start over. With the Finnish product now currently costing close to $150k. No one is buying it. No matter how many great reviews it gets. Toyota gets it! The sweat spot that will make this car desirable is a low price tag, tune ability and readability.

    The new base mid-engine Corvette will start around $58K - I'll wait for it.
    Why can't a wealthy billion dollar global manufacturer make their own engine and architecture? This is not Toyota's finest moment. How many folks are modifying a new $60K Toyota - especially when it is leased? Toyota leadership should be embarrassed by this misstep.

    • @faeinthebay
      @faeinthebay 5 лет назад +1

      Toyota could make their own engine and platform, but why would they? It wouldn't have many other applications across their lineup (Lexus cars already have their own heavier platforms and engines). The high cost wouldn't be worth the sales of a niche car like the Z4/Supra, which is also why BMW didn't develop this on its own. So both manufacturers decided to split the development costs to develop this niche platform.

    • @dailyrant4068

      It doesn't matter how wealthy the company is, do you even know how much it costs to manufacturer vehicles in the modern age? Chrysler spent $1 billion just retooling and preparing to build their minivan. A brand new inline six will cost Toyota hundreds of millions and they won't get that money back because they don't see it as usable in other vehicles. They love their V6 in all their SUVs.

    I'm a Toyota guy. I've owned Toyotas for about 20 years. Alex, I completely disagree with you about the BMW tie-up. I buy Toyotas knowing that I will give up some excitement and in return get Toyota reliability. That is why we buy Toyotas.
    Toyota makes several excellent V6 engines, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged. As much as I like inline-6 engines, I would much rather have a Toyota-developed V6 than a BMW-sourced inline-6. BMW sadly has a history of serious reliability issues, and this car is a BMW built by Magna Steyr in Austria.
    I don't have a problem with the ZF automatic (other than the fact that there is no manual transmission available). As automatics go, the ZF is one of the best. I despise the BMW shifter, though that is a rant for another day...
    The styling is, frankly, hideous. The fake vents are atrocious. They can make up whatever stories they want about the fake vents, but fake vents just suck -- they are indicative of lazy designers. The visibility looks poor, with very short side windows.
    Toyota blew this. Toyota spent a great deal of money developing the 200 Series Land Cruiser, even though it also sells in very low numbers, but that is a Toyota through-and-through, with legendary Toyota reliability. Toyota chose not to make the same investment in the Supra. That is their decision. My decision in response is that I won't buy this car; it simply isn't a Toyota. If I want to buy a BMW, I'll go to the BMW dealer and buy one.

  • @doctorlarry2273
    @doctorlarry2273 5 лет назад

    If you think the interior is "reminiscent" of Toyota - you better look again. It is BMW through and through. Good thing they defined the driver zone with red, otherwise how would we know where to sit? Turbo lag in the MKIV sequential system? No - it was very responsive. Larger single turbos had definite lag, but not the stock twins. Of course, turbo tech has changed a lot in 17 years, so it should be better. I have a small single on my MKIV and it has almost no lag. Yes - Supra "purists", i.e., those that know and understand the previous generations, don't like it being a BMW. While an inline six is ideal for balance, if it comes from BMW it will not be reliable. Automatics are so good these day, it is a mixed bag, but many still want a manual option in a sports car. "A sprinkle of BMW DNA? Why not?" This is built with BMW parts throughout and will be as unreliable as other BMWs. Get rid of it before the engine takes a dump after 3-4 years. That is "why not". Toyota should have called this something else. It is only a marginal improvement over the previous generation - 17 years ago! No, I will not be buying one since it is basically a BMW.

The Supra will hit 60 a second sooner then the Camaro. Both have 335 HP but your comparing the crappy GM 3.6 to the legendary B58 inline six. And then you have the ZF 8 speed in the toy which is the best AT on the planet full stop. Then you have the cheap interior of the GM next to the toy that has BMW's full center stack and high quality materials.
