And I love that you talk about cars with more track experience and mechanical knowledge than most youtubers. Could you film more old cars though, like old shcool miatas and BMWs? I’d say Doug first and foremost is good at finding quirks and features of the car that other reviewers usually don’t talk about. Then most people would want to see Doug’s opinion on the driving, so Doug does it too. Nice to see his opinion but I’d take the opinions of other RUclipsrs like Engineering Explained or savagegeese more seriously.

    I watched some other reviews, but I believe them to be clouded with bias either for or against the Supra. What I love about your channel is that you are able to see cars for what they are and tell us truthfully in a respectful manner. If I were to buy a new car within the next few years, it will be this Supra. I believe they will hold their value extremely well and I believe that they will be a great car to have. In an age where cars are getting less aggressively styled etc. I like that the Supra has aggressive styling and the ability to add aftermarket parts. Keep up the good work.

      Ultra DMX Doug is good. Who is better will depend on what you are looking for. For me I value detail and production quality. Geese is objectively best in both categories. For detail, he usually goes into way more depth than any other car reviewer. He puts vehicles on lifts and breaks down all the mechanicals. He also brings inside information from talking to car company reps and designers. In terms of production quality, he’s way better than Doug. Geese uses close up stabilizer shots, to cinematic drone footage. He knows about composing a shot, and proper lighting. Anyways, objectively Geese goes into the most detail while having very high production quality.

      ya but everyone knows BMW struggled with V-8s, and nearly every V8 M3 had known rod bearing issues...their i6 is indisputably one of the best most reliable engines ever made. However, comparing Toyota engine reliability to any german is not a fair comparison. German engineering focus' more on performance and Toyota doesn't hence the bmw engine in the supra and lack of FI on any lexus F type.

    • @evoman44
      @evoman44 4 года назад +2

      I thought the same too before doing some research. I found out that the new engine used in the Supra was thoroughly tested and revised by Toyota to meet their quality and reliability standards. See this video at 8:00 for more details. ruclips.net/video/_jbyzmtgU_0/видео.html

      @Joseph C. Try not to be dishonest with what you're stating; the recalls were a) for literally just a few that had improper seatbelt welds and b) defective back-up cameras.
      I'll take a defective camera over major engine failures and other flaws BMW's are known for (that Toyota investigated themselves and has done what they can to mitigate these issues) over an actual BMW that had no input whatsoever from Toyota. I'd never in my entire life buy a BMW, but a 'BMW' that was top to bottom inspected as a joint venture with Toyota, being held to their standards, yeah, i'll go ahead and buy one.

    I really like the car. But to me it's a re-imagining of a Supra as a sports car. The original was much more of a GT car, and I don't think Toyota wanted to build a non-Lexus GT as the cost would have been astronomical 'for a Toyota' (probably north of $90k, the MKIV was relatively more expensive than this).
    Is it a perfect rose-tinted evolution of a 90's icon? No. Is it a tunable sports coupe? Yes and I think that's something to celebrate.

    • @dawnpoint

      @@dawnpoint That's it. The MK4 didn't sell well at all compared to the MK3, until it hit the used market after the 'cultural appreciation'.
      I used to own an MK4 and it was a great car, but it was no sports car. They were soft and comfortable compared even to other cars of the era (R32/R33 GTR for example). Even the default 2JZ tune for the MK4 was smooth, comfortable power.
      Another thing to consider is because of it's later reputation as a 'sports car' (and the fact that cars like the Cayman didn't exist during the MK4's inception) Toyota had to change the focus from a GT to compete.

    Great video Mr. Geese. I'd like to point out one thing - I appreciate your use of slow shutter speeds in the outdoor daytime shots. So many productions, even huge professional ones, overlook this little detail. They use super fast shutter speeds which makes the footage look choppy, amateur, and unpleasant, cause they didn't want to just slap a simple ND filter on there. It makes the footage look so much more pleasant and cinematic.

    Toyota could have made it on their own, however, it would have been a massive financial risk; a new platform could also have spawned a Toyota made next gen 86, as well Lexus models, and could have used the I-6 and I-6 turbo in other models (Tacoma, SUV's etc.) but Toyota being Toyota, they took the more financially safe approach by partnering with BMW.
    I know the styling is polarizing, but I'm in the camp of "like it". The car looks great in yellow and red, I don't know why anyone would want a sedate color on this type of car. The Supra looks way better than the Honda Civic type fast and furious.
    I still think a car like this needs a manual transmission option, maybe it will come later. It's going to have to go toe-to-toe with modern Mustangs & Camaros which are amazing cars for the money, and with the PP2/ILE models amazing handlers, as well as lower end Porsches, of course the Z4, and to a significantly lesser extent, the 370z. Maybe this will prompt Renault/Nissan to revive the Z, give it a fresh chassis and the VR30DDTT from the Infinity line.
    I'm interested to see parts pricing though, being it's a BMW under the skin, with Toyota offer replacement parts with a lower profit margin built in, or are they going to cost BMW money?

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад +5

      "A massive financial risk"? Congrats for the understatement of the week. For Toyota to have undertaken the new Supra on its own it would have more like a fiduciary crime. The word is that mid-level bean counters tried to stop the shared project with BMW based on analysis that the Supra will never make its investment back. Had Mr. Toyoda not stepped in to green light the Supra it would never have been built, at all. The Supra is pure and simple a gift to those who love sports cars. It deserves to be appreciated on that basis alone.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад +2

      @Nathan unknown "...Cost to the company means fuck all, considering how much the market share Toy has in the global markets." This comment reminds me of an old I Love Lucy episode. Lucy and Ethel purchased a dress shop. They found they couldn't move their inventory. So Lucy suggested they drop the price of their dresses. But Ethel objected that they would lose money on every dress they sold if they did so. Lucy's response was that they would make up the deficit in volume. I assume you're not a financial analyst for a major automotive manufacturer.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад

      @Nathan unknown Well, you'll have to wait at least a couple of years to find out whether Toyota fans sour on the Supra because every single unit planned for the current and next model year have already been pre-ordered. And if you think that there are serious competitors at the $50K MSRP, you should definitely name one so those already on waiting lists for the Supra can go out and buy one. As for claiming that "Toyota could stand to loose (sic) on the full in-house production and be alright," I'm afraid you really don't understand how capitalism works.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад

      @Nathan unknown So your comeback consists of an article reporting that Toyota makes a profit, a list of vehicles under $50K virtually none of which is a true two seat sports car except for vehicles like the MX-5, the Fiata, and the BRZ/86, none of which is a Supra competitor and a number of vehicles that are no longer even for sale, a list of automobiles priced thousands of dollars more than the Supra, several of which have MSRP's twice that of the Supra, and a list of used cars.

    Thanks for cooling your head and collecting your thoughts before talking about this in a review. That is what journalism should be like. Great visuals and sound go nicely with the train of thought you follow here. Is this one of the cars you could see yourself buying and owning to support the idea behind it, like your old FRS? Would love to see you and Turbowski tune this. Or are you "getting to old" for messing around with these things?

      I dont have the time right now to early adopt this car. And as good as it is I'd want a manual car regardless of loss of performance. But hopefully people get out there and test the limits. I have some track videos etc. Planned with it however.

    That rear end is really growing on me. Yeah it's not the concept but I think they did a good job style wise. I like it.

      Yeah, every time I see it I like it more. I think it's an instant classic, especially with the upgradablity.

    To be clear, Toyota flew him in to drive a Subaru and a BMW. Love your videos, man. Keep doing what you're doing.

    With all those fake vents and other aftermarket prepared slots, maybe Toyota can pump out limited editions where TRD themselves will fill in those slots. Sure, make it more expensive, but it will definitely be cool to see. Toyota Supra Track Edition, like the RC F.

    Me: If I wanted a BMW, I would just go and buy a BMW.
    Toyota: But this is not a BMW
    Me: Are you sure?
    Toyota: Kinda

    Outstanding job! You hit the apex at angles no one does. I'm not talking about the drive, I'm talking about the content of your review. I'll never be able to drive this car, but in my own way, I felt like I did, thanks to you!

    Savage, I’m trying so hard to find a camera rig that can hold up to being jostled around in my AP1 s2000 but everything seems to fall off after a while. I know you’re rig is pretty fancy, but would you have any suggestions for me without having to spend a fortune?

      Yeah I've used suction cup mounts in the past and I'd like to keep using them if possible. I don't have a roll bar or harness bar to attach cameras to.@@taiwilson8966

    I wish it didn’t look like a blobfish from the front.
    Also @1:50 - panel gap problems you can see from a city block away. You’ve criticized cars that weren’t even this bad. What gives?

    Thank you for explaining to the people why Toyota worked with BMW, and now it's affordable for everyone. People are so quick to judge and hating on the new Supra And for those saying it's basically driving a BMW, well maybe shouldn't judge if they havnt driven one.
