My father-in-law, a farmer’s son, vehicle tinkerer and most importantly a mechanical engineer, gave me an entire set (15 or so) of different magnetic pick-ups that he had cobbled together over decades to remove nuts, washers, etc… that he’d dropped over the years. It is a much treasured collection.

The agony when some bonehead move kicked me in the family jewels, followed by immeasurable relief when I managed to rescue myself from it. I’ve asked myself many times over the decades why I do this to myself. It’s for two moments. That nut or bolt dropping down into the engine can and does happen even in the best run Pro-workshops. Magnets to the rescue.
Rebuilt and breathed new life into automotive engines for over fifty years now, be they a single cylinder Motor Cycle engine back in the 1960s, more recently Rover and MG Petrol T and K series turbos or others, I will never tire of that first successful start up after rebuild experience when the machine bursts into healthy life reborn.
You clearly had that DEEP JOY experience here too. Worth all the time and effort. All being well, it will soon be the Ferrari that Jack built.

Very well done! I once dropped a carb mounting nut down the inlet manifold of my 1963 Daimler V8 and spent ages fishing for it with a magnet. Eventually had to give up and take the manifold off to find it sitting on one of the inlet valve stems in a head. Fortunately it didn't make it into the cylinder.
Those nuts and spacers holding the trumpets in the airbox always worry me; easy to lose one of those down a carb.
Not sure if it's 308 valves people want or YOUR 308 valves in particular, but if it's the former I have a few more that you can give away if you like. I have pistons too!

That dropped nut brought back awful memories of dropping a brass washer down an oilway on my Jensen Healey 907 engine. It had a long ominous rattle before it stopped. We (Dad and I) fished around with a long magnetic screwdriver to no avail, took the engine out, sump off - no washer. Turned the engine upside down and shook it, still no washer. Faced with a full strip down, we carefully turned the engine over, no graunching or sign of interference, turned the engine upside down again, more shaking still nothing, repeated turning it over still nothing. With fingers and toes crossed we reinstalled the engine, turned it over on the starter with the plugs out - still ok, put the plugs in and she rang cleanly. The engine ran without any problem from the errant washer until I sold it some 30k miles later. To my knowledge the new owner never had a problem from it either. What a stressful weekend that was.

I have lost my nuts in some really awkward places (ha!), but you win this one. So good to see things moving along so well!

How rewarding is that? So good to hear that engine roar again. On to the final steps now. Awesome job mate.

Excellent progress, congrats! You are not alone, I did exactly the same thing with a cam journal washer on my 328. Same solution to extract it. The feelings of blood running cold as I watched it disappear and the utter relief when I heard the click of it sticking to the magnet are something never to be forgotten !

I use my magnet tool all the time, constantly dropping fasteners that always try to escape at their earliest opportunity from my butter fingers.
The 308 will sound and perform as you want it to now, I very much look forward to your videos Jack, thanks!

So satisfying to hear it fire up after all this time. Good work retrieving the escapee nut, too, although I did spend the time you were proudly showing it to us thinking "get it away from the car before you drop it back in there" 🤣🤣🤣. Great work. So nice to see.

This is fantastic news after all this time. Your excitement is so great. I remember the oil burning off after working on my dads car as a kid.
