- I'd been struggling with a strange misfire since I rebuilt the engine on the InfluEnzo. My only option seemed to be to buy new ignition parts to try and solve the problem.. then this old Ferrari 308 came to the rescue and allowed me to swap parts and diagnose the problem for free!
FULL INFLUENZO EPISODE LIST: • InfluEnzo - Ferrari 30... - Авто/Мото
I’m so happy that you found the problem. Persistence pays off!
When you're done and finished with the influenzo you're going to be the leading 308 guy in the UK 🤌🏻😎😄
'I got quite excited when I came out of McDonalds because it looked like the Influenzo had been stolen!' haha!
I chuckled at Jack, with the smile he had.
reminded me of some people I know in New York who used to take their Jag XJ6 to the rough end of the Bronx and leave the keys in it in the hope it would be stolen but it never was
I’ve never actually cheered out loud for a youtuber but I’m so glad it’s finally fixed! Well done mate!
Your little grinning face in the rear view mirror was magic!
Ha!! I wondered if anyone would pick that up!!
Congratulations on the carb discovery and fair play to you for admitting the mistake. It happens to all of us. On the Weber carbs the running from off-idle to 3000 rpm is handled by the idle jets (yes I know it sounds counter-intuitive). The jet options from the factory are wrong for present times because modern fuels are not as potent as they were back then. This normally necessitates larger jets for proper running. After extensive testing with O2 sensors in the exhaust I have found 53 idle jets to work best. They are a little harder to find but they are just that bit crisper on acceleration to the 55 jets and the 50's tend to be too lean.
Excellent info! I'm waaaaay too invested in this channel. These types of diagnosis can be really frustrating but also very satisfying when you nail it.
Thank you!! I do have 55s but want to cure the slight miss I’ve still got before trying them..
@@Number27 A miss or a flat spot ? A flat spot will be exasperated, by running lean , so maybe go straight for the 55’s you have until you find 53’s , and perhaps it’ll magically work out ?
I don't have a Ferrari but I do have twin DCOEs on my car. One thing I've come to realize, over time, is there's no substitute for a really good Weber guy, with a dyno. There are so many possible combinations with Weber carbs that getting it just right without a dyno, and someone who actually understands Webers, (and such people are now few and far between) is extremely difficult to achieve.
Idle jets are critical, and my experiments say the jump from 50 to 55 is huge. I like the idea of 53. You can get jets from alfa1750 on eBay. Any size you want. I use O2 sensors on each side of my flat 6. LHS wants 60 idles, RHS wants 62 idles. It is just the variation between the two 51 year old Zeniths demanding a slightly different spec. My point being: yes! Change the jets to account for today’s fuels.
Good on you Jack. Great to hear her run up to 7000 revs. To me, it sounded fantastic.. Hope you will keep your 308. They really are a work of art.
Great news! Well done! By the way ... The Car Wizard (RUclips) is currently sorting one of these out. He was talking in his last video two days ago about the electronic ignition system and a couple of aftermarket alterations people do. One I think you'll find particularly interesting, it's quite popular with 308 owners and does away with the distributors completely. Might be worth a watch or a message to the Wizard, he really knows his stuff. Much respect, keep up the good work. This is still the most beautiful car ever made in my opinion, love watching your videos!
Thank you John and I am in touch with the Wizard already!! Hope to do something over soon with him
@@Number27 Awesome!
I was going to suggest 'The Wizard'!
@@Number27 great to hear! Any cross-over between the channels would be fun to see. If nothing else, the Wizard takes a practical approach to most problems.
Jack thats what makes us better mechanics making mistakes and having the patience and skill to rectify the problem, well done
My first time in a 308 was at a Ferrari Club day at a track here in Canada in 1986. I was a paramedic, and for insurance reasons, we needed to be on site. The members were very gracious to me, they could tell I was a Ferrari fan. At lunch time I had the opportunity to get a ride around the track with an IROC race driver. Absolutely amazing experience. The IROC guy hated the car, saying the IROC Camaros handled better. I couldn’t care what he thought, this was a Ferrari! I’ll never forget that day.
Your grin at 10:40 is what it's all about. This is why we do these sorts of things. Good job.
Excellent news! Your persistence is paying off. Plus you have a very nice friend to allow you to dissemble and borrow engine parts off his own 308.
This is the sort of job where the oscilloscope comes into its own. You can look at exactly what is going on,when and where and it saves so much time, money, effort and frustration.
Hi Jack - I finally have got my beetle to run properly after 6 months. Just got lucky, and decided to check the accelllerator pump and the small adjusting screw had come loose, and because it is out of sight i would never have known, and would never have seen, and it shouldn't be able to come loose anyway. So, the point of this boring bit of news to you, is we all just keep going and going looking for the cause of the poor running, and eventually you will get to where you want to be..!! It is actually after all the fun of the journey, and like you said " we are just amatuers" teaching ourselves new skills which is something to be so proud of. You are a Ferrari mechanic...!!
Super news Jack.Glad to hear the girl singing at 7000!
You sir, have the patience of a saint. Can’t help thinking that most other people work have chucked the towel in.
Intermittent faults are a blessing in the end, you learn so much.
“It feels like a Ferrari”. Magical words, and we’re all delighted for you. Hate to say it, but a swap of all the electrical again now with the other car would be useful and maybe able to help you now carb issue is out of the way. It’s got to be worth a try, surely? Good luck!
You are a testimonial to perseverance! Well spotted in the end, you deserved the relief
My life is complete watching these videos
Never met someone with so much patience and commitment. And love the rhetorical questions. “It’s driving better, is it driving better though”
Nice to see you smiling jack. Good luck with your 308.
Thank you Mike!!
There must be a Ferrari expert on here that can help you get over the last hurdle. No shame in asking, we all want to see it running great again. You are so close now.
Light at the end of the tunnel!! Your global family is very happy for you, and we're excited that you will fine tune the engine in short order for maximum performance and fun!! Bravo, good sir!
Jack, it’s so infectious to see you smile from the results! Congratulations my man! 🙌🏻
Thanks Steve!!
7000 rpm, that's where you need it!! Well done mate, we're all human, and it's good to make mistakes. You only learn if you make a mistake, and you got to the route of the problem and now your Ferrari runs like it should. Nice one Jack!
Jack finally fixes the problem and brings the 308 back to life. Then grinds 2nd gear and needs to rebuild the transmission! 😂
Patience is a virtue
Many would have cursed the car and thrown the towel in long before. Your persistence has payed off. Now you can really start to enjoy your Ferrari. Good job, really happy for you.👍👍
Congratulations Jack! I always said that the two most important tools in a mechanic's toolbox are patience and persistence. You have remained an optimistic trooper, and it is paying off.
Although I’m only watching, I felt almost as much excitement as you did! 😁 You’re doing great 👍
I'm soooooo pleased you fixed this yourself and didn't take the easy option like you suggested in your previous video (of taking it to Harry's garage) - I had every confidence in you that you'd solve this all by yourself and your smile says it all. Well done to you and your new moustache!
Cheers Jez!!
Running much better! Your persistence is paying off. Congratulations.
Well done Jack, and congratulations on finding the issues yourself, makes it even more rewarding..
Influenzo Up for sale soon ? sad to see her go! Hope the Lotus is getting better
Ha!you have made my day!!Congratulations!Perseverance should be the new name for her.
Thank you Si!!
Fixing your car was like climbing a steep mountain. Painful while you are at it, so rewarding to enjoy the view at the top.
Well done.
Your unwavering enthusiasm in the the face of so many challenges keeps us watching! Never has anyone deserved a Ferrari so much!
As an older mechanic it worries me when someone goes out and thrashes an engine that isn't running correctly, as if it is a fuel starvation/lean mixture on a carb it will cause detonation and melted pistons or even just piston rings losing their tension from the high cylinder temperature. Thrashing an engine to try and fix it is known as a Wharfie Tune Up, as they are as rough as guts.
I never write comments on RUclips but had to write to say well done for persevering and so pleased you have it sounding like a Ferrarri again. Well done Jack!
That’s amazing Mark, thanks for making the effort to write!
Really pleased you are almost there. Weber's are difficult to set up unless you are used to them, but there are still people around, not many now, who can help, as I have no doubt you know. These cars don't need to be driven fast to enjoy, a quiet country lane, 0730 on a weekend morning, roof off, and off you go.
Great to see you getting the influenzo back to some of the former glory. You are genius!
Jack....you have the patience of a saint.
YES to the better sounding 308. YES to the tache
YES to your patience and skills
Well done sir! Always frustrating to find the problem was something you put back together, but the bottom line is that it's fixed!
Absolutely rapt for you that the beast is running so much better, Jack! I know from experience that chasing gremlins on a classic can be almost physically painful (and not only to the wallet!).
I have learnt that after a significant win, it is best to just drive the car as it is for a while - even though there may be a niggle or two - because sometimes the remaining problems reduce in size either in actuality or in the grand scheme of the driving and overall enjoyment of the vehicle, to the point that hey are mere 'quirks' or 'characteristics' of that particular car.
Sometimes they go away on their own and other times, with driving, things settle in and they present themselves in a way that is easier to diagnose when you aren't still all tied up in knots trying to figure it all out at once.
My recommendation is to get out and about in the UK summer in the wee beasty and clock up some miles - and really put the smile back on your face and the happiness back in your heart for the beast. Leave the tinkering until the Autumn when the weather isn't so nice.....unless she suddenly tells you definitively what her issue is.
All the very best, mate.
had a bad few days until i saw an update on number 27 and my spirits have been lifted !! whoop whoop well done jack way to go !!!
Sorry to hear that.. hope this week is better for you!
@@Number27 your smile and enthusiasm is infectious !!!
Delighted for you, well done that man!
So cool that you found the primary issue. May be worth new plugs wires and extenders to eliminate those from the spark equation.
It's always in the details. Nice to see you finally seemed to find the problem.
10 out of 10 for persistency. Well done.
SUCH A PLEASURE! TO SEE YOU KEEPING THE FAITH AND TRYING TILL IT‘S WORKING FINE!! GREAT!! GREAT!! GREAT!!
Great news Jack! Way to stick with it. I've experience that look you had on your face when you finally found the problem. Best feeling ever.
Definitely.. it was a moment of pure joy!
I've put venturi's in backwards in DCOE's as well, it's an easy and super confusing mistake. Congrats! I learned much from Ian Tyrell tuning the webers, he is a great source of information. It's like tuning a wind instrument for sure. When it spins at 7k and you get that amazing noise out of the induction, it's all worth it.
Thanks Chris!! Car is sounding good now!
Well done Jack. Things are looking up with the Influenzo.
Great looking car the 308. Hopefully you can start to enjoy this Italian Beauty at long last.
Congratulations mate. The joy of finally finding the issue is much sweeter because of the hardships along the way.
Jack.... you are a persistent genius my friend!! Yeeeessss!! 👍👍
It's the little mistakes that take the longest time to find, but man there's no better feeling than that first test drive when it's running right. It sounds really good now.
Wow Jack, finally good news. That wasn't an easy one, mow some fine tunning and will be spot on. Now it sounds nice. Some people say they are slow, but they are still faster than most of the cars around.
Thanks you Inacio, hope you had a great weekend and thanks for watching!
+1
People who complain that old cars are "slow" are missing the point. Sure, any modern family sedan probably will leave the 308 in the dust, but they have NO SOUL.
@@bobmcl2406 Exactly it's the "way" they go, not how fast they go. Nothing like a high revving manual trans carbed flat plane V8 10 inches behind you.
@@Number27 will not miss it for anything ;)
Wrapped to see your efforts have paid off... sad to hear you disappointed in finding it hadn't been stolen... keep at it! Lovely car. Hope you have the chance of actually enjoying it a little more now 👍
I’ve got the same DCNF Weber on my Ducati Paso. I couldn’t easily get the venturies out last time I cleaned it. I’ll keep this trap in mind next time I do!
So glad your persistence has paid off 😁
In NLP there's an understanding that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback & that's what I like about you & your video's..... you don't give up and work forward to success. Well done 👍
Yippeeeeeeeeee!!! I did a dance around my living room when you found the problem 🕺
Persistence beats resistance. Well done my friend.
Your joy is so evident, so pleased for you!
Your commitment and determination is an inspiration for all of struggling with our classic Sports cars. There are both moments of Joy and pain.
Brilliant! So happy for you Jack. 👏👏
You are now a Ferrari Specialist Jack!!
Congratulations!!🍾 what a great feeling! I look forward to the final tune.
I won't lie! I did shed a little tear when you found the part the wrong way round. I felt your Joy Big time. It a gamechanger. Things are eventually turning a corner for the better. Great news. Im so happy and a little relieved after all your efforts you deserve things to start coming together. Ps I always let the adverts play out on your videos.
Great to hear Dennis and really kind to help out with the Ads! Take care buddy!
Nice going Jack! You're a much better back yard Ferrari mechanic than Magnum was :D
I love seeing that smile! I’ve had that same one when I finally sorted something out or figured out what needs to be done! Congrats on this milestone, you deserved that break today! ;-)
Thank you buddy!! Enjoy the sun!!
Yahoooo !! Nice one Jack for finally tracking down the main problem :-)
Your persistence is a lesson to all us home mechanics. Never give up until the problem is solved.
Never give up! It pays off..Well done! 👍😀
Well done, so great to see you enjoying the influenzo again.
Well I am off to Saint Louis with the 1982 308 GTB from Saint Petersburg Florida on the 15 of June for two weeks heres to you and MAGNIUM!!!
Enjoy it Glenn!!
So pleased you found an issue and put that right. Imop , replace the distributors with fully electronic ignition. Then have the carbs balanced by the guru , you will be amazed at the result! Ps I said it was a carb issue , weeks ago.
Been watching since you got the Influenzo - feeling mildly elated that you worked out the problem with the venturi! Came for the Influenzo, stayed for the other content also.
Thank you Tom!!!
Great update, glad your making progress
Perseverance paid off, well done excellent news 😀
I thought 308s had two distributors (one for each bank) but obviously you know your car. Love that engine sound with its flat plane crank.
Some did.. some did not..
We learn from our mistakes - and that was a simple doozy. The Weber DCNF being such a minimalist masterpiece of function, the handbooks always beg you to rule everything else out before blaming the carb - there is so little to go wrong once correctly calibrated (jets, venturis, emulsion tubes, etc). and even then they just give the cylinder the volume of air it is seeking, a passive instrument by design, but fowl that up and its like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. But once the other systems are ruled out, like you did, the fault can lie no where else. When an analog car talks, there is an art to listening - it is telling you all that you need to know!
Well done. Very happy for you!
So happy for you Jack!! Your persistence is starting to pay off, keep going mate!! 👍
Excellent progress!! So exciting.
Great news Jack, I’m so happy for you. I look forward to actually seeing you take roads trips in the Influenzo 😁
Love your videos, keep em coming mate
Hi Jack.
Huge Congratulations that you found the problem 👏.
Bit of fine tuning and will be Sweet.
Greetings from Trinidad 🇹🇹. Happy Trails Mate.
Congrats! Great to see (and hear) it running well.
Thank you Russel! Hope you’re doing well and enjoy the sun ☀️ today!!
I honestly couldn’t be happier for you. So exciting
Call............... The Car Wizard. He doesn't mess with bits. He strips the crap out of a GTB and puts the entire car back together.
So happy to see you smiling again with the Influenzo Jack! You really deserve good news after such an exercise of resilience.
You are very humble Jack. It’s a pleasure to watch your videos and go on the emotional roller coaster with you!
Great progress! Thanks for sharing.
Very satisfying find - getting closer! Your persistence is paying off.
This is great progress, Jack! Cheers!;)
Great job Jack! I knew you would figure it out!!! Keep up the great videos!!
Woo Hoo!! This is awesome!! You must be feeling pretty chuffed about this, AND not to mention you are now quite the experienced Ferrari 308 technician!! For someone who is not a mechanic, and coming from someone who is/was (retired) you have the right aptitude to be a mechanic let me tell you!!
Thanks Kev, keep well buddy!
Well done! Chapeau for your perseverance and analytic skills!
Great job on the troubleshoot! Good to see your efforts pay off!! Car sounds amazing, even online!
Well happy for you , can’t wait for the next one
Hoorah! Glad your perseverance finally paid off! Influenzo sounds fantastic!
