Hi Jack a couple of thoughts. Not entirely sure those modern spark plugs with the very fine centre electrode are ideal for an old school carb engine. Replace with an ordinary NGK plug. Also NGK plugs are made in countries other than Japan, country of manufacture is stamped below the porcelain on the metal body. In my opinion the Japanese ones are far superior. Also are you running point? If the points have been replaced with a magnetronic trigger in the distributor this needs a 12 volt feed and if your ignition has a blast resistor and you're taking the power from the coil then the module will only be receiving approximately 7 volts which will cause a miss as spark demand is increased at higher revs. Hope this helps.

I thought I was unique in luck that continually trips you up...even I was expecting things to be all ok after Ian did mixture and balance.. can u borrow a set of suitable carbs, known to be good, for further elimination purposes? - Is the tank badly rusted / full of debris that is getting past filter somehow? - Is filter now showing new debris? Monitor / replace Coil + Amp power feeds and earths - If no affect, Perhaps there is a piece of simple test gear available that clips on to all eight plug leads and feeds 'Scope traces into a laptop App, recording all data during test drive - Sync the traces (timebase) and they should lay ontop of each other perfectly - any exceptions will stand out clearly and can then be traced back to individual leads which will certainly narrow fault location :)
I remember the time when you heard these engines in these Alfas and even today I get goose bumps. This was truly a wonderful time. Engines still sounded like engines. Great Review 👍
Master Yoda with a flat blade screwdriver and a piece of rubber hose. I love it! Not to curse you Jack, but I think you are getting really close to having this squared away. Can't wait till your next episode.
Having had a carburated Italian car back in the day (Fiat 124), I know how "touchy" those carburetor adjustments can be. I had a problem where my engine would start running very rough after a while, and it turned out to be the idling screw that kept unscrewing itself slightly by the vibrations! Also, the accelerator pump was sticking sometimes. Carburetors are very finicky devices. Iain is certainly a very experienced mechanic with these things, Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. P.S. I could hear that your voice was also "misfiring' near the end of the video. I hope that you didn't get a sore throat?
Accelerator pump has been the source of all by VW bug misery for months. Had no idea the adjustment had slipped to minimum as it is visually obscured by the alternator. It is what caused all the flat spots and rough running when pulling away, so I spent hours adjusting the mixture and the air bypass (idle) screws to try and compensate !! Does the Ferrari have accelerator pumps?
Pretty cool of Ian to help with your 308. A certain group of UK RUclipsrs have made these Italian exotics interesting again by focusing on the technical side while deimphasizing the mountain of money needed to acquire and keep them healthy.
Seeing Iain using the hose to listen to the carbs brought back memories of one of my late mechanics that worked on all my Alfa's in the past. They don't make them like they used to! It makes Great viewing and entertaining. Hopefully you get the "influenzo" to it's peak performace. Persistence beats resistance 💪
It’s great to see the car being used and a couple of longer journeys will no doubt do it good. Sometimes these issues can be such a simple thing that eludes you for so long, maybe even as simple as a faulty connection or a plug lead breaking down. As much as anything it’s a process of elimination and understanding that if you are a going to actually use the car the there will be continuous issues to deal with ! Ian is a legend, I’m so glad he has his own channel now and he’s such a modest man and so likeable. As others have said these old-school mechanics are amazing, and there really is no substitute for those decades of experience.
Nice to hear it running better than it has been. Shame its not 100% but it is great following your progress with it. Iain is a old school engine tuner. Seriously knows those cars inside out. Easy to tell that just from watching him work on the car & his comments. Long time since I have seen someone balance a multi carb engine by ear. Following Iain's channel. Don't worry about things getting boring Jack as they are not. As entertaining as ever. Will be great to see the car running 100% but its about the journey getting to that point too.
Great stuff, I live close to Iain's place near Chester, its nice just to see all the cars in the workshop as well as your 308!, fantastic looking machine
A big thanks to Iain for his help. Jack, good on you taking the risk to drive it the 4 hours to Iain's shop. It sounds much better, and hopefully some minor refinement sorts it.
Fabulous episode! I still think that the miss is electrical now that you know the carbs and the jets are set correctly. Go back and start over on the electronic check list, you'll find it and it will probably be something ridiculously obvious!
Brilliant episode, Jack! Watching RUclips’s legendary exotic tuner work on RUclips’s legendary problem 308 was so much fun. 😎 And props to you for your tenacity, good humour and generosity of spirit taking us along this entire adventure. If I driven all that way just to have the issue rear its head half way back I’d be in an institution by day’s end... Onwards!
I know I'm going off on a bit of a tangent, but I did this on a motorbike 500 honda. It was down the bottom of somebody's garden with trees growing all around it. He said if I can get it running I can take it away. I had to do exactly the same thing with the carbs and tick over. I bet you all the money in the world that this is where this guy started out. Knowledge like this guy has got is worth its weight in gold, and still wouldn't be out of place in an F1 garage
Sounds much better! 😎👍 Incredible how Ian tunes the carbs by ear. I used to have a 6 cylinder bike that had 6 carbs, I used a set of carb balancing vacuum guages to balance them, it was always very fiddly and adjusting one would have an impact on the others, so getting them all balanced was always a challenge.🤔
Brilliant. Not only has my love for 308s grown very deeply over the past couple of years, but I love Ian's work and you are a very pleasant presence in general. Lovely car, sir. Cor it’s been so many years since I had to adjust the balance on a carb and fiddle with the idle speed. It brought back lots of memories of ongoing frustration but also that HUGE hit of dopamine when it went right and improved performance. Keep going - loving seeing how this develops. Thanks for another great video.
I really enjoy watching your videos as a classic car enthusiast. I'm sure with perseverance you'll get it running 100%. Some advise I can give that I haven't seen in your videos. It may be worth checking the accelerator pumps. Each carburetor will have one and if working correctly will produce a good jet of petrol from each choke. If not, the rubber diaphragm may be perished. A good way to check is by looking into each carb with the choke valve open. Then open the throttle wide. You should see petrol squirting in. You could also try using Gunson Colortune. Basically a glass spark plug that comes in different thread sizes. It lets you see the combustion inside the cylinder and the colour indicates the performance of the mixture. Its available on Ebay and Amazon. It may be another way of identifying the troublesome cylinder(s).
What an absolutely lovely chap Iain is, and what an insight into his amazing old school capabilities and experience. He even disclosed his secrets about what to listen for and described in detail how to tune those carbs..... not many experts would do that. Great video Jack I really enjoyed it, and hope you get that misfire sorted.... thankyou.👍🇬🇧
Two things spring to mind. Modern spark plugs do not take kidly to fauling up. Get new and start driving at once, no standing idling etc. Plus maybe you need to adjust the accpumps on the carbs, if they give too much fuel too early then it reacts like that. I am happy that Iain took up the fact that idle screws do a lot for the cars drivability not just the idle. You are very close to finding the solution now. Good luck!-)
Carbs as suspected , now done sounds so much better , as it's now intermittan , poss something electrical .you are getting there Jack , got a good feeling you are on the home straight to feeling satisfied with your 308!

It was a pleasure to watch this man's experience in setting up the carbs, essentially with a length of rubber hose.....truly amazing!! Hello again from Burry Port, 15 miles west of Swansea. Some time ago, my v-twin motorcycle had an intermittent misfire, the cause of which was a devil to ascertain. It turned out to be an HT lead which had become corroded to a greenish colour at the spark plug end, only visible after the sheathing was cut back. Being a cheap git, I'd already bought a low mileage pair of replacement coils, {plus a rectifier and other bits and bobs from eBay} and wonder if your car might have the same issue. It was pretty unexpected in the case of my bike, as I try to avoid riding in the wet nowadays. Hope you manage to find the cause soon. Best regards.
getting close - i recon theres some s**t floating about in one of the idle jets - every now + again blocking it. chased my tail on a pinto 38 DGAS setup, eventually bought 2 idle jets + it was fixed. i never saw anything in the jets to cause the problem, but something was wrong with at least one of them. unfortunately u need 8... oh well, its only money....
Great Video - enjoyed very much. As for the misfiring - pretty sure the carbs are fixed. But there is fuel supply and - most important - ignition to check. Did you check if misfiring is temperature dependent? Could be OT sensors, cables and coils. Or even distributor cabs. OT sensors most likely if occuring ar low revs at warmed up engine. Just a thought. And - grounding the Digiplexes is essential. Thanks for keeping us never bored just by providing you vids!
I subscribe to various RUclips channels. Been watching Number 27 since you did that "10 cars" run of videos. I never get bored of Influenzo. When an Influenzo update comes up, I'm still always straight to it.
Thank you for listening to us harp on, and do the 8 hour round trip. Well done, what a great guy and to think what he has taught you with a screwdriver and a hose pipe. Magic, and you must be close now to perfection. Which will be kinda sad, because it means closure, and moving on to something else no doubt?
Well, that made things crispier and more lively, I have been wondering about the idle mixtures and balance.....I think you did well to get as far as you did, doing the Iain Tyrell trick takes many many years of experience, listening, knowing what you're listening to, and not to mention, you have to be doing it regularly to keep you ear tuned........I could tell the difference it made straight away, it suddenly became very perky!! I love thios series, and once its sorted I'm going to be very sad about it in some ways, its been a hell of a journey for you!! This collaboration was awesome, I really enjoyed it, and it would be good to see another meet with Iain to wrap up the series!!
Great show and has created a lot of interest. If you were to iron out everything right away it would not have been as interesting. I'm beginning to think a jetting problem. Try some Lucas gas additive might help clear it up.
mixture screws will be the primary performance adjustment from idle to 1/8th throttle, then the needle height takes over up to 3/4 throttle, then the size of the main jet on WOT
Just gonna throw it out there but check your vacuum lines thoroughly. even cracks can cause huge issues. Rubber is usually shot on cars that old and it can be hard to see what is bad. It's usually best to replace all the old rubber at the same time. It was nice to see you visit Tyrell- he is a master at what he does.

Cheers From Trinidad 🇹🇹
I think the spare carb idea is probably a no but I do suspect a cable on that misfire when it kicks back in at higher revs
I remember the time when you heard these engines in these Alfas and even today I get goose bumps. This was truly a wonderful time. Engines still sounded like engines. Great Review 👍
Getting there! I love the way Ian did the “engine whisper trick”
Master Yoda with a flat blade screwdriver and a piece of rubber hose. I love it! Not to curse you Jack, but I think you are getting really close to having this squared away. Can't wait till your next episode.
Sounds so much better. Good stuff mate.
13:28 the front manifold heat shield! Of course! Iain makes everything easy! Superlative knowledge with classic cars
Love a youtube crossover and you and Iain Tyrrell are 2 of my favourites! Glad the 308 is running better.. ish.. Awesome video!!
Iain is such a nice chap, so much knowledge...sounding sooo much better 👌
Great stuff, I live close to Iain's place near Chester, its nice just to see all the cars in the workshop as well as your 308!, fantastic looking machine
A big thanks to Iain for his help. Jack, good on you taking the risk to drive it the 4 hours to Iain's shop. It sounds much better, and hopefully some minor refinement sorts it.
The sound when to take off at 14:20 : Glorious!
Could be a fuel supply issue ????? Or different carbs getting different amounts/rates of fuel getting to each carb ?
It's called balancing the carbs. The hose is one way to hear air flow , but they have ports to connect to a proper manometer.
And props to you for your tenacity, good humour and generosity of spirit taking us along this entire adventure.
Incredible how Ian tunes the carbs by ear. I used to have a 6 cylinder bike that had 6 carbs, I used a set of carb balancing vacuum guages to balance them, it was always very fiddly and adjusting one would have an impact on the others, so getting them all balanced was always a challenge.🤔
Honda?
@@enzoschulmeister8625 Yes a Honda CBX1000 cracking bike, sounded beautiful.👍
Brilliant. Not only has my love for 308s grown very deeply over the past couple of years, but I love Ian's work and you are a very pleasant presence in general. Lovely car, sir. I'm off to watch Ian and a Dino, in my opinion THE most beautiful car EVER, but I look forward to more of you and your smile machine.
Don't worry Jack - it's not getting boring. Quite the opposite in fact!
...unlike the latest offerings from Ratarossa. What's interesting in watching bodywork being rubbed down? Not for me, I'm afraid.
@@jacqui911s Jack's a different level to that guy
@@matthewbell1968 I stopped watching him when one of his videos was sponsored by an online slot machine / betting site, and he gave it a big plug saying how much he enjoyed playing that site. What a tool.
@@JamesandRibble Yup I saw that as well and you're right, a complete tool utterly full of his own self importance. He should watch m539 and learn from a real pro.
@@matthewbell1968 I noticed he then deleted all the comments about his dogshit sponsor, and those criticising him for encouraging people down the black hole of online gambling. I'm not a particularly moralistic person, but you have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and have a degree of self respect.
Absolute magic, ten minutes and the Influenso is sorted, the man is brilliant and what an approachable nice person! And what a garage!
Great to see you made some good progress there, looking forward to seeing what Ian's thoughts are on the next steps!
Iain Tyrrell: The Prancing Horse Whisperer.
Iain Tyrrells RUclips Channel is my favorite youtube channel of all time to watch. The man is absolutely brilliant.
I could listen to Iain sharing his knowledge all day. The guru!
I have watched Iain’s channel from the start and he really is awesome. His level of knowledge is unsurpassed and his storytelling is fascinating.
Carbs as suspected , now done sounds so much better , as it's now intermittan , poss something electrical .you are getting there Jack , got a good feeling you are on the home straight to feeling satisfied with your 308!
It’s called “trauma bonding”, Jack. 😆 That’s why you’re so attached. And the rest of us in a way!
Lol, I'm the same with my jet boat. Breaks down all the time, but I know all it's faults.
It's a variant of "Stockholm Syndrome", only the captor is a car.
Is it why BMW owners love their cars. Absence (in the repair shop) makes the heart grow fonder?
Great video Jack, you have the patience of a saint and we were really hoping Ian would help you get to the bottom of the misfire. We’ll keep watching. All the best Vint-tro.
Thanks chap!! Enjoy the rest of the weekend!!
“Congratulations, looking forward to having a look at it” - Iain Tyrrell, the man lives up to the legend.
The idle circuit on Weber's work up to 3000 RPM, if it is still missing below 3000 RPM it is in the idle circuit.
What 3000 rpms. I like to know where you got the info from.I see everyone is going straight to carbs .mistake made by most people who do more damage to engines than good
@@honda350racer6 I have worked on webers all my life and that is the general consensus if you have any experience, I have had 5 cars that i have built over 30 years, all fitted with multiple weber dual barrel carbs, either IDF's or IDA's, all tuned by myself with all of my experience being with weber down drafts, , buy your self a weber tuning book.
I love how you two managed to capture the "Italian" tune-up, as it took place. Drive it like you stole it, and you'll have a "good one". Drive it gently with fear and numbers in your mind, and your car will go to ****. It's an Italian car thing 🤷♂️
Really loved this crossover episode of the influenzo. You're so fortunate to have Iain Tyrell as one of your contacts. It was a pleasure to watch this man's experience in setting up the carbs, essentially with a length of rubber hose.....truly amazing!! Really glad that the car is running better as a result, but based on your observations at the end of the video, it seems there are still some challenges ahead. Looking forward to the next episode.
He’s an absolutely fab guy! Next two episodes are out!!
Chatting over the engine of a 308... cameraman's eye wanders over to the Countach... you and me both, brother, you and me both.
WOW that sounds so much better, Iain is a master!
I subscribe to various RUclips channels. Been watching Number 27 since you did that "10 cars" run of videos. I never get bored of Influenzo. When an Influenzo update comes up, I'm still always straight to it.
This reminds me of my Alfa 33 with twin double carburettors in the early 90’s.
That's awesome seeing your car at Iain Tyrrell's. He is THE Car Whisperer. Great episode!
Ian is such a gentleman and the ultimate car whisperer
Thank you for listening to us harp on, and do the 8 hour round trip. Well done, what a great guy and to think what he has taught you with a screwdriver and a hose pipe. Magic, and you must be close now to perfection. Which will be kinda sad, because it means closure, and moving on to something else no doubt?
Great content. I’ve listened to this chap quite a few times.(with Harry and his Lambo etc). Car sounds so much better....until the end....????
He seems so down to earth even though he has achieved so much. Great man 👌
Great show and has created a lot of interest.
He's cheap for the expertise he offers the man is almost irreplaceable 👍
Yessss! Great guest appearance, great (initial) result, great noise from those Italian trumpets.
Jack dont know if ian thought a set of spark plugs would help when carbs are that weak they suffer bad (NGK)ARE MY PREFFERED ONES. pleased ian got carbs set up.
I’m a huge fan of NGKs, if only for the logo.
Might have an iffy cable though?
