      I was just about to say “it looks like it’s melting”. I like content that’s genuine. Remember the old platform vine? No one was trying too hard, being fake or calculating- they just happened to capture entertaining moments on cam.

      I don't think that applies here, it might be better that the new tools aren't as durable. Based on workers accounts, old tools were so ridged their arms were wrought with arthritis.

      While neat, this is 100% about the material hardness. Newer axes are not hardened as much to prevent edge chipping. Old axes they couldn't control hardening as well. If you wanted an axe with the same hardness as older ones with better modern materials, it's trivial to make. Customers don't want that, they want sharper edges with less chipping.

    The damage to the lower axe seems to come from the welding on the upper axe.

      Nah, you can see it happened earlier if you look close, and it basically missed the weld entirely. Still doesn't detract whatsoever from it's performance or the humiliation of the new junk

      @@AffordBindEquipment at 10 seconds, the sharpened edge of the bottom axe is clearly damaged since it is the thinnest part of the axe about halfway of the top axe before it hit the weld.

      @@GlutenEruptiontheirs parts of the weld called the heat affected zone so any where where that weld is it’s harder than the other metal because it pulls some of the carbon to the weld.

    This is the entirely wrong test to determine axe quality. Modern axes are made to be less hard to prevent edge chipping, and easier sharpening. Just like a car in a crash, it breaks for a reason.

    They probably made the axe softer because its cheaper, but since its now softer it shouldnt break for much longer because it can take a harder hit and absorb more kinetick energy

    I think that it will always be the one that "cut" being destroyed. Because the one on top is being presed by 2 sides .
    While the one beneath isn t by any sides.
    So it dosen t matter if is or no a 100 year old axe but what matters is which has higger presure.
    That s my guess 😮

      heat treatment means nothing if you don’t know what the chemistry of the metal is, also simply using an axe will not “work harden” anything

      Not really, there are advantages to using softer steel for a tool that takes repeated impacts. The harder steel is more brittle.

      The new axe will most likely last longer because it will deform over time and is easier to sharpen while the old axe is just going to shatter one day

      not really. the marginally harder steel was going to cut the marginally softer steel when enough pressure was applied... and it took many many tons of force. this basically tells you nothing about what would happen in human use conditions.
