Dude, you’re using second gear! Kudos. Hand brake always was crap but looked great with the little bulb in the underside lighting the cabin with the right leather and window tint.
Great video... love those new fuses, a bit surprised you hadn't checked the front wheels before now, that'll make a huge diference. Thanks and all the best.👍🏽🇬🇧
Hey! I had and I’d felt some play on that side but thought it was the bearing.. which I then adjusted and seemed ok. But obviously I wasn’t pushing the wheel in the right way afterwards.
Yes Mate, quite a bit of play on the front end. Glad you got a new line (although the expensive one) from the oil cooler but the leak should be gone. Your Air Box Mod adds a little grunt but I wouldn't worry about it until you get the new exhaust on. Lastly, I absolutely Love the new fuse panels. The LED is brilliant! You should check the hand brake cable and make sure it's not binding up giving you false tension. It is definitely not holding we can see that, but you do have tension inside at the handle.
Wow, seeing those original fuses caused me to flashback to my 1970 Ford Cortina GT. That's the last time I saw that style of fuse. And yes, they were dodgy even back then!
It could be that your brake pads have "crystallized" and therefore do not "bite" anyone. I suggest you get your discs resurfaced and replace the pads, inexpensive and good upkeep.
Main problem was when you said "the 'second' thing to do is adjust the calliper" what you should do is adjust both inner and outer pads FIRST with the h/brake cables backed right off. Then adjust the cable to give the desired travel of the lever. DE-glaze the pads might help too.
Hose & Tubular Services in Luton are good if you ever need hydraulic hoses making up! Nino the owner is the man to speak to. Anything they don’t have they can get next day pretty much. Love the vids 👍
I know about the parking brakes on those cars my Porsche has the same rear calipers. You gotta adjust the inner and outer pad on each caliper but not so much that the drag.
Seems to be a pretty common problem with disks at the rear. It's hard to get the leverage mechanically, to the point that some types have drum parking brakes in the hub.
Slacken the handbrake cable till the nut is almost off. Take the pads out, sand them. Make sure all the mechanical parts move freely. Refit, adjust the pads so they are just touching. Pull the cable and re-adjust the pads. Finally, adjust the cable to 2-3 clicks. Change the top and bottom ball joints, change the track rod ends too. Check the front wheel bearings. Have you welded the front chassis yet?
@@JustBadly In fact my father did back in the late 1980s and he had it rebuilt from the ground up with a 400hp Chevy V8 engine stuffed in, was a cool car
cars these days are so overengineered...for example the newer mercedes s class.......def wont be seeing many of them at 200k plus miles driving around in 30 years......
Old man shouts at cloud. (I'm probably older than you, and often repair my own cars - but your comment is the singularly most tedious thing ever posted under car videos. 🥱)
The handbrake can be a real pain. Adjusted mine today, its holding on 3 clicks. Make sure there is no tension on the cable going to the caliper when setting the pads. Then you should only need slight tension on the cable between. Good luck.
You want more of an induction sound? Put a KandN air filter on it, you will hear it trust me. I have one on my 86 944 turbo porsche, I have the k and n Kone kit, and it sounds great going down the road. Little things mean a bunch. Beautiful car bro. Its one of my faves from the Big 80s!
Your calliper looks really like the older Saab ones even down to the feeler gauge. What we do is take the pads out and adjust the piston using a tool until It is just not binding. It works every time.
Try sanding the e-brake pads and rear rotors with some emory tape or 80 to 120grit wet n dry.8. and adjust them so they are just touching but not stopping wheels from stopping completely when you spin them by hand. Also grease all pivot points etc.
🤭 blimey, that’s just a little “play” A car of this age if it’s not been done ,it’s polybush the lot and enjoy... watching your vids has really whet my appetite for finally pricking up my Alfa spider , you’ve sustained me in vicarious automotive enjoyment whilst the last touches are done on mine. Oh my that was some play there in the left front. I went like "that's not a wheel bearing is it".... Don't forget to have the car properly set up / suspension geometry checked when you are done. BTW what I found gives the most enjoyment, find the most weary bushings and replace them with polybush. If you change to new bushings they need to be pressed in, but if you use poly bush you can usually just slide them in. On my Capri the most difference was the tie-bars (also being the antoi-roll-bar). Made 200% better steering.
When 'Motor' finally got hold of and tested the 308 gt4 they found the hand brake was so weak it would not hold the car on their 1 in 3 slope and produced less than the 0.25g required to pass the MOT test. That was a new car. The gtb and gts have the exact same system. You might want to take a bit more travel out of the lever but that's as good as it gets. If it's on a slope, leave it in gear. Also, if you're still running the OEM Ate pads a pad upgrade will dramatically improve the main brakes' performance. EBC Red Stuff is a favourite and they are available at about £60 per axle.
Just had a look over some of your other vids. If it were mine id be pulling all 4 corners off the car. Replace all bushes , wheel bearings , pads , fluids and probably the discs and hoses. Pull the rack or at least find where the play is. If the rubber is more than 4 or 5 years old id be replacing tyres also.
Yes ok but I don’t want the car off the Road all summer so one step at a time. All fluids have been done. And plenty more but o ly ao much i can do without having the car off the road for ages

From the outside it will look normal but obviously you will see the mod underneath but it's something that could easily be removed you would get the induction roar from behind your ears then too
If you look online for Merlin Motorsport they have one in black for £8.99 which would be perfect inverted upside down below the lid , I tried to upload a screen shot but it wouldn't let me 👍
Just a quick heads up on the handbrake. I watched in horror as my old A6 Avant rolled off across the car park (@ Box Hill). Fortunately it missed several other vehicles and hit a bin! Everyone was calling me prat for not putting the handbrake on. I had put the h/brake on. Someone then told me that he had the same problem. Handbrake operates via caliper clamping pads onto discs. Apparently the as the discs cool they shrink a small amount reducing the amount of grip from the h/brake! Audi told me to ALWAYS leave the car in gear... (It was a manual G/box) Not a great design.
Not sure, but my X1/9 has the same E brake assembly, on the interior. It can be adjusted by sliding the mounting base forward, and simultaneously tightening down the mounting screws. 🤷♂️
@@Number27 Did you press brake multiple times with cable slack, the lever needs to go to its stop. Once lever on the stop then needs to have clearance set, then multiple application of brakes, only then take up slack in cable. You, as I am sure you know, don't tighten handbrake with the cable ever. You tighten handbrake and then eliminate slack afterwards. Hope that helps. Live the channel
Enjoyed the vid and great that you showed that moment of hand brake failure been there done that and more than once with Jags, Lotus and others which had "poor" handbrake issues... However it should operate better than that for sure. You can add confusion by adjusting brake pads/shoes to make the handbrake operational when the likely cause is in the handbrake mechanism, either wear in levers or cams or cable adjustment issues seem to be the likely cause...? If you adjust those pads too close to make up for wear in the handbrake mechanism, you could end up with dragging rear brakes causing the fluid to boil in which case you can end up unexpectedly with with no brakes..Not good..!

i’m excited for you mate! and i think your gonna be shocked in a great way,....... can’t wait and my fingers are crossed for you becuase i really know how you feel as i had the same with one of my old porsches 👍🤞
I had a similar handbrake problem on a Detroit product. It turns out the the cable stretched out beyond spec over the years. Simple solution, replace with new cable.
Seems I’m pretty quick on the draw with this video. Great stuff as is Ratarossa’s channel showing that it’s possible to run an old Ferrari with relatively basic skills tools and facilities. I hope in the next year or so to be a relatively old guy with a relatively old Ferrari that is relatively cheap to buy and run. Keep the inspirational content coming 👍
The rear calipers are the same as a Porsche 914. The handbrake adjustment is in the back of the caliper. With an key it can be adjusted. Don't worry if the adjuster comes out when you pull the allen key out. Don't adjust it with the handbrake on, you can strip the teeth on the adjuster.
Did the car not have to go through MOT when it came into your ownership? I can’t imagine that the ball joint would gone that bad in the time you’ve owned it.
Number 27 wow, you must have put on a lot of miles to have that much wear in a ball joint in a year. I have never seen wear like that on any cars that I have owned, and I’ve done my share of ball joints over the years.
Yikes, that extremely worn and loose ball joint...count you blessings that you've now caught that 'disaster waiting to happen any minute now' condition. Indeed, with 'classic/exotic' vehicles, it's not only about idiosyncratic repairs but also very run of the mill repairs. Enjoyable vid as always!!
For your oil cooler lines you could try a hydraulic hose specialist like pirtek, I'm sure they would be able to help for half the price you mentioned, they're a national/International company

excellent mate! so glad to see another video of just your influenza if i’m honest!!! can not wait for the exhuast to be done to see the difference ! 😬😬😬
Cant wait either.. going tomorrow
i’m excited for you mate! and i think your gonna be shocked in a great way,....... can’t wait and my fingers are crossed for you becuase i really know how you feel as i had the same with one of my old porsches 👍🤞
Good luck getting one Mark!
Somehow we missed some footage from adjusting brakes and fighting with oil cooler 🤨
But bit by bit 308 is coming to full glory 👍
0:00 That shoulda been the first thing checked after getting the car
indeedski,,,,bit of a schoolboy error there Mr 27......so close to catastrophic failure.....
Dead right. How on earth could you _not_ feel that within first 200 metres of driving?! 🙄
Keep going, you’re really making great head way now. Fair play👍
Yes.. that’s what I did in the video. They’re still crap though
@@Number27 Great, sadly I have to agree, they're crap 😂
Brilliant, such a great watch, thanks.
Did the car not have to go through MOT when it came into your ownership? I can’t imagine that the ball joint would gone that bad in the time you’ve owned it.
Was Mot’d last August.. so almost a year ago!!
Number 27 wow, you must have put on a lot of miles to have that much wear in a ball joint in a year. I have never seen wear like that on any cars that I have owned, and I’ve done my share of ball joints over the years.
When last did that car pass an MOT?
Yeah, I'm starting to think along the same lines?
Not with the absence of a working handbrake...
@@eknaap8800 These handbrakes never worked, every good MoT tester knows that.
@@patrickdixon4945 must surely be easy to update, taking mechanism from a more modern car that Does work?
Great stuff. Soon the car will be too nice lol. Next some sketchy 348? :)
Thank you! Enjoy the weekend and thanks for watching Elgar!
My favorite car of all time, its just beautiful. I'll own one one day...
Great video glad your getting there
For your oil cooler lines you could try a hydraulic hose specialist like pirtek, I'm sure they would be able to help for half the price you mentioned, they're a national/International company
Or Hydrasun
Holy flogged out BallJoint Batman!! That will most likely sharpen the handling up!! Nice video, always ejoy the influenzo episodes!!
no worries mate if it handles like a Riva Aquarama u r a winner cheers
I moved away from Oxford in February, but I know JS motors well :)
