I went Porsche. At the price point of a 991.1 Base, there aren't too many Ferrari options in my price range. If I had been willing to stretch my budget, I could have just squeaked into the lowest price points, which is probably not advisable for such a car. Also, wanted a manual transmission. Could have found the Ferrari sooner (more with manual), but the Ferrari manual premium is $10-15k, where the less common Porsche manual is only $1-3k more for manual. That said, even if I HAD the coin, I probably would have favored the Porsche for a few reasons: 1) Insurance - rates are cheaper in the USA for Porsche & insurance won't require you to have a lockable garage or motion camera fixed on your car, as some insurances will. 2) Mechanicals - Choose the right Porsche (generation and cared for example) and it'll be a very reliable car for MANY miles. Harder to do that with a Ferrari. 3) Driving Aversion - A "high milage" Ferrari is 40k miles, but a "high milage" Porsche is 150k+. A testament to reliability, maintainability, and depreciation behavior. I want to be able to drive the hell out of this, and not think twice about doing so. 4) Practicality - As a second, fun-focussed car, practicality isn't too important, but if I make a longer road trip, I want to make sure I can haul whatever I may need. 5) Support Network - Porsche shops are FAR more common than Ferrari. The USA is VAST and occasionally desolate. If I'm on a road trip and the car breaks down, I'm likely closer to a Porsche shop than I am a Ferrari. 6) Manufacturer Support - Porsche supports their cars forever; continuing to create parts & offering modernized head units in perpetuity. Ferrari doesn't. Those are my reasons!
You are a boringly sensible person - just like me - 991.1 great for all those reasons - No doubting a Ferrari is spectacular, always love looking at someone else's 😋
Great video! I drove Porsches for 20 years and now my beloved F355 for 14 years. I love both. Driving a Porsche is great fun. But driving my Ferrari, is something greater than life...
Watching these videos with a bacon sarnie and a brew is becoming a bit of a weekend tradition now. Jay seems a very likable bloke with a real passion for what he does and the recent V12 homage video was genuinely one of the best RUclips car bloke videos I've seen from anyone in years! To my mind at least, that vid made Jay every bit as good as some of the bigger names out there, Clarkson and co included.
@@mattewj1268 As a current Porsche owner, I have to agree. I wanted a Ferrari, but couldn’t swing the $$ for a 458 or 488, so I settled for a Certified DB11. Porsche has turned into Rolex…..pretending to be Patek, but in reality, it’s just a hoarded overpriced Toyota. At least my Aston is hand built.
Best video you’ve made recently I think. You’ve expressed exactly how I feel about the car community and especially how some of the Porsche people look down on you and it happened to me when I would show up at meets with my Cayman S 987.1. My dream car is in fact a Ferrari 360 or F430, hope one day my dream will come true!
I have been daily driving a Cayman S 987.1 for the last 6 years, summer and winter, and still do. Was seriously considering 360 or F430 for good weather weekend/evening fun, but this summer I bought a Caterham... 🥴
If they sneer at your Caymen S and drive some kind of Widow Maker 911 ... just laugh it off, its only a matter of time before they end up in ditch, or they never squeeze the loud pedal.
I’ve never owned such exotica but in 55 yrs of car ownership I’ve never bought one to impress others. If it appeals to me and ticks the boxes that’s required at the time I’m a happy bunny.
two of his five are about image projection & attraction to others. one can be proud of their machine, but self-worth being invested in the opinions of others is a form of insecurity - or being a performer in the entertainment industry.
Honestly every time I start to get interested in Porsche I look at the behavior of some of their fanboys and I’m a bit repulsed by the insulting, arrogant, self-congratulatory sanctimony that has always been inseparable from the Porsche brand. So while I generally don’t advertise that I own a Ferrari because of the Ferrari stigma, I don’t want any part of that insecure Porsche narcissism. Typical Porsche fanboy response to a comment like this? You’re too poor to afford a Porsche. You’re envious. You don’t understand cars, blah blah blah. Porsche has always attracted that type of idiot and I’m just over it. No interest. And it’s too bad because actually I do like the cars, and I know there are a a lot of great Porsche owners out there. Hell I’m friends with some. But the few bad apples spoiled the whole batch for me.
@@GTC4cam i dont find any shame in a gto, its jdm legend and super rare 64k in tue whole world. Running a little above stock at 350 it smoked a 911 gt3 when he tried to do a flyby. Agree fully with your comment, i think a lack of knowlege on cars is also apart of it
On the 'car community' issue, this is an interesting psychology thing. I've had it with boats in when I had my diddy starter boat, in marinas, people with huge boats often were very friendly reminiscing that they started with something similar and what fun it was etc etc. But a number of boat owners who had 'fairly' big boats could be very snobby how I wasn't worthy of being in the marina. Obviously NOT all but certainly more in that demographic than with very small or very big boats. I called it 'middle management syndrome'. Done reasonably well but not quite made to the 'top' where they wanted to be. I wonder if Porsche can attract a similar issue. (Once again not everyone) but because Porsche is a bit of a mid-brand, some of its owners need to puff themselves up a bit. (Usually by squashing down 'lesser mortals'). Not an exact science but I've seen it in boats, cars and even houses..
Expensive Cars and Boats! Whats the point of owning them if you aren’t willing to share the experience with the world! Not everyone achieves success so why not look at it as an opportunity to share, motivate and connect with people. Theres plenty of snobs in the world and most of them have some sort of inferiority defect if they look down upon you. Theres plenty of that in Miami. Im not sure what the contest is because unless you are the richest person in the world someone will always have more money.
James is so spot on. 9 years ago we got our first Porsche, a 981 boxster. Absolutely loved the car, my wife takes it to work everyday. Once at a dealer for warranty repair, an older gentleman asked her what she brought that day. She said boxster, the guy said “oh I have a real Porsche, a 911”. A few years later, my wife showed up in a 991.2 gt3 to a Porsche meet, not one guy gave her the eye contact or establish a conversation, guys in their caymans and 911s with their egos hurt, or prob comment something along the lines like that’s her husbands car or she can’t drive etc. I absolutely hate Porsche clubs, I would be rolling in a lambo and they would say “u gotta get a Porsche”. They got too much group ego and not open minded. And 1/4 the pple we met don’t drive their cars but all they do is talk about market values and which model will appreciate… so foking boring. We love Porsches, have a 3RS and spyder, but we also love and own Ferraris and lambo. Diff charm and magic from each brand, and yes pple gotta look around for alternative charming cars rather than playing the Porsche dealer markup and flipper game
In Australia it’s even worse. All the bobble hat wearers talk about is whether their car is Australian delivery. They all came from the same factory lol. Then we get to where 3/4 of the people that show up are driving PTS GT3s, because theirs is “special”. 😂
I drove a mate’s 488 this summer - devastatingly fast and stupidly capable. I then drove the same set of roads in my (well sorted) TVR Cerbera and it really put things into context. You just don’t need to spend all that money, if all you want is a thrilling drive. Modern cars are just too good, achieving monumental performance too effortlessly. Incidentally, was out on those same roads in an F40 a few years ago. Needless to say, it blew everything else into the weeds in terms of the experience, and I wasn’t even driving.
I’d love a Cerbera, always wanted one. I had a chimera for about 10 years from about 98,it cost me a fortune to run(to me),let me down occasionally (but I’d blame myself),had engine rebuild at 18,000 miles(I put servicing extras on cheque stub) and still loved it and covered up for it.😂
I have to agree. That’s why I am more interested in 60’s sports cars. Although much slower and less capable, you can have just as must fun at a slower speed and for much less money.
I pushed the like button as you described the Ferrari community, and then wished I could push it again as you ranted about the fact that its passion that matters, not ownership. Great vid.
This is a fabulous video. I could only afford my V6 Camaro, but I love it to death, and it will not be the last one I own. I hate when people rag on other people who just love their own car!
Excellent points and summary of the emotional vs. cerebral differences of Ferrari vs. Porsche. I couldn’t agree more, James! As a Porsche owner, for the reasons stated, I someday need to own a Ferrari… as soon as I find the right example (and I get the courage)! Cheers and happy motoring!
On the subject of the Porsche community and meetings, I have to totally disagree. When I bought my Cayman 987.2 Base, a Porsche group owner came up to me at a local car meet and asked about me and my Cayman. Him being an older 60+ fellow and me being 26 at the time, I really didn't expect him to take me seriously. But instead, invited me into the group and the Porsche In The Park they were having later in the year. I went to that, and everyone was just lovely and friendly. Not one person made me feel like shit, despite them having something like a 992 GT3 RS, Sports Classic or even a Cayman GT4 RS. Hell, they welcomed someone with a Porsche 914, a Porsche that is near enough forgotten about by most people. Speaking of both the 992 GT3 RS and Sports Classics (which the owner had both the 997 and 992 variants), they both eagerly allowed me to get in and sit in their expensive cars and take photographs. Me being someone who is generally quite introverted still, this welcoming attitude is something i've needed for awhile, and I couldn't be happier meeting some truly interesting characters in this group, it really changed my perspective on thinking Porsche owners are all suited up business snobs, and I was the odd one out due to my age and occupation, but this couldn't be further from the truth in my experience lol To give context, I live in North East Scotland, so i'm not sure what Porsche owners are like anywhere else around the UK. But from i've gathered, the typical snobby Porsche owner is much more prevalent as an English thing. Obviously not saying all English owners are like that, but considering you (James) live in England, you're alot more exposed to it. It really does depend on where you live, I guess. For all you know, there's abunch of Ferrari owners somewhere in America who treat people like how you claim people treated you and your mum. Different environments, different attitudes.
I agree with much of what you say. Having owned both Ferraris and Porsches I would agree that owning a Ferrari is a special experience whichever model you drive, and however old it is, you are part of a special club. I was lucky enough to compete in the Pirelli-Ferrari Hill Climb Championship for some years in a 328GTB and that was fantastic. Even so, the one thing I would add to the debate, as a current Porsche 718 Spyder owner, is that 'flippers' and collectors aside, you are much more likely to see Porsches being driven hard on track or on road trips. As a long term-member of GRRC and someone who attends 6-8 track days a year, I am much more likely to see Porsches being driven hard (and usually well) but rarely do I see Ferraris on track being used like they are supposed to be. Now, as you say, there are a lot more Porsches out there, even so, I think Ferraris are more about the 'having' than the 'driving'.
Not to mention many (most?) of the quality track events are run by Porsche people, who also boast the largest instructor community. I think Porsche has plenty of knobs and snobs in the aggregate (almost all 911 people), but the active PCA people (which is a lot of people) are genuinely wonderful and welcoming and enthusiastic. (Also a 718 spyder owner) Maybe the vibe is different in the UK, or you’re only hitting C&C instead of track days. I’ve been to a few Italian car events…and my most representative memory is of the lady in the Murci on track in high heels. I kid you not.
@@r0b3rt_959yes, but not really because the car’s not up to it, but because they’re built in very small numbers and are viciously expensive vs 911 GT models ie are thus too valuable to risk on trackdaying.
But it doesn’t stop with porsche . It’s all about the money $ you have for the car because if you want to talk having fun there are way more Miata’s out there romping around the track on weekends than Porsches so now , does this mean that the Miata is a much more superior track car ? Or is it because more people can afford them and enjoy them .???
I've owned both, and simply there is nothing like the feel-good factor, noise, sat behind the wheel feeling than driving a Ferrari. Proof in the pudding is, I currently own a new Porsche and a classic Aston, and I continually find myself looking through Pistonheads and Autotrader looking at Ferraris available.
I agree with your comments about the car community. I recently took my new 992 series base model to a Porsche meet and not one person spoke to me accept the dealer rep who wanted me to trade it in. You are also spot on about the recent antics of Porsche fleecing its customers with ridiculous over charges and hefty rises in base[prices for every model. My car, that had a base price of $127,000Cdn in 2021 now has a list price of $161,000 before any options.so my optioned up 992 that was $147,00 in 2021 is now over $200,000 Cdn. As much as I like the Brand and the cars, my current 992 is my last Porsche.
I prefer your driving commentaries rather than your static ones. The highlight for me is often the odd comment on things outside the window. Few others can drive while giving a cohesive narrative.
@@JayEmmOnCarsHi James. Lovely as usual. That music at the beginning just suits the whole video review about Ferrari/ Porsche . What is the name of that beat?
I came from owning every type of 911 to a 458 spider. I have no doubt across country my old 911 Turbo would demolish the big Fiat but at anything under 120mph it was just boring. Very very competent but dull. The 458 by comparison is exciting at 30 mph and 3 years of ownership later has proved to be more reliable than the 911 was. In the modern world where even a hot hatch is monstrously fast a car should be exciting first and foremost and the Ferrari has that in spades.
Lol I think you Made the wrong comparison in terms of performances. You should compare the 911 turbo to something comparable in the Ferrari lineup and it will be always faster and more exciting
I’ve always looked at 991 gt3 s and then looked across at the 458 488 you could have for the same money and thought which one would I go for… I know which of the two would have been on my wall as a teenager. It’s not the 911 (this is from a Porsche owner albeit a cayman) The 458 shape is so special in comparison. If you had both in a car park and members of the public could drive either the gt3 or the 458 I reckon the vast majority would pick the 458…
@@stu4181 I meant the Ferrari would always be more exciting and faster. Ofc if you compare the 911 turbo to the baby Ferrari, the comparison would not make sense
Fantastic video James, I agree 100% Having owned a 992 and now having a Roma, the Ferrari feels special in any type of driving, even stationary, whereas the Porsche felt like a high performance Golf until you really pushed it ( then it was amazing!). The buying experience was also much better with Ferrari, with the Porsche it was like they were doing you a favour....
Depends on the model. I'm sure a GT3RS/2RS/Touring feels more special and looks more special than a Roma or California even a 488. High Tier Ferrari models yes but that is debatable as well. A 918 Spyder looks more special than any Ferrari model except the LaFerrari and other Ferrari Halo Cars.
I didn't consider a Portofino, I just fell in love with the Roma from launch but didn't think I could stretch to owning one. I had actually ordered another 992 ( GTS) but waited so long that I eventually cancelled it and took a deep breath and ordered the Roma!
I could listen to a Jaguar V8 burble all day long.....I was educated by a TVR owner when I said I didn't like the sound of the McLaren V8....and he said "ahh that's because you prefer a cross plane crank to a flat plane crank". So whether its Ferrari v Porsche, cross plane v flat, turbo v normally aspirated etc etc, it's good to know we are all on the right side of the petrol head line.....Just say NO to EV 🤣
EV owners are evangelical to the point of being deranged. They have to try and justify what is turning out to be a terrible buying decision - worse for the environment, more expensive, horrific depreciation, short life span ,limited range and more expensive to charge than petrol if using public chargers .
I have overtaken many Tesla Model S noobs in my 2009 V6 Honda... they will hog the left lane, think their Tesla is a fast car, oblivious distracted drivers. I enjoy humbling their egos when I buzz past them carrying 20 mph more through a slight bend.
Very nice videography and music . Videos on the move please, not static. And why aren’t you saying ‘Por-tia’ (Porsche) we say it when we read Shakespeare 🤔
I think it’s very impressive that you can deliver these 30 min monologues while driving. I prefer it to sitting in a garage splicing in on-road b-roll. Although most content creators do a mix of both, but maybe it makes your content more unique
The superiority of a Ferrari is not only the greater power, since one can install a big turbo into a Honda to get more power. The truth of the matter is the way the Ferrari delivers the power, and the handling, the smell and of course the sound.
I agree with all your five points. My '95 Supra sport roof manual and '08 F430 spider manual were never in the shop though. I kick myself for selling the Supra for USD20k in 2002. The F430 just works. I don't commute by car but I use it half the time I'm going anywhere. (Other half is an E39 M5 manual of course.) The F430 prices took a big hit when the 458 came out of course but after 15 years it hasn't lost much per year, probably cheaper than buying a high-end Toyota sedan every three years. Still feels really nice to get in and drive, and it's the only car I've never gotten a speeding ticket in: it's simply enjoyable even stuck in Tokyo traffic, roof down any time it's not raining.
James. Stay in the car during your discussions. You do a great job of talking and driving. The talking part is always informative and well researched and the driving part keeps us from drifting away. Thanks for your videos and your passion. (I go back and forth on your shirts 🤣)
There are few Ferrari models that don't have at least a few odd, off putting angles that simply never grow on me. Yes, including the older ones. (Notable exceptions: F355, F430, 288 GTO). That said, I completely agree that most of them are truly special and unique. And what you shared about most owners being enthusiasts is something I've heard about here in the States, as well.
@christhompson9420 yep, he adopted it from a plane he shot down, and that was a German plane that originated from Stuttgart, the German plane had the Stuttgart coat of arms on it.
@@eblevindanope, Francesco Baracca choose a horse as his emblem because he was part of the Italian cavalry battallion before joining the Italian Air Force in the very early days of aviation. In fact he was one of the first Italians to get a pilot's licence.
@bio4546 yes, I read that too, he only adopted the prancing horse after his first aerial victory, three possible sources exist for the horse, one a distant family crest, another a link to his Calvary past and the last one the trophy from the Stuttgart plane. Some Ferrari main dealers list the Stuttgart theory as most likely.
Right now, I can’t sleep properly, and when I do, I dream of it… I wake up thinking of it… I eat, bathe, breathe and smell thinking about it… 991.2 Turbo S, or 458 Italia… 😮💨 Both have almost same price and I’ve them available with my car dealer, ready to pick up one before summer or before a person takes one of them… I saw this video to help clear my thoughts, and it’s amazing together with clear nice reasons, but the truth is, I don’t give a fck about clubs or what people on the streets think… I’m all about the driving experience… And Porsche Turbo S offers this Power 💥 even easier to take it a lot higher with just a really small mods on intakes, exhaust and ecu… This great response to the turns in high speeds… And then it’s Ferrari… 😍 Just there being a Ferrari, it doesn’t needs anything else… A men dreams car (including me), but yes, harder to maintain and to takes to its limits. But still a Ferrari 😮💨 So the video make really good points about clubs, communities and things… But I don’t care that, I’m about the driving experience… And you truly can enjoy a lot pushing Porsche to the max any time you want! And then it’s Ferrari experience, that it must feels like owning, a Ferrari… 😮💨 So after all, when I wanted to clear my head with this video, I am more confused than ever. 😢😭 🐎
I´ve had a couple of 911´s and mid engine Ferraris but the 911´s always stick with me and the Ferraris are more like an affair on the side. I like that you can drive the Porsches very hard without having a lot of problems or pay a lot of money to maintain it! Also the Porsches are quicker on track although very underpowered compared to Ferraris!! Then I don´t like the attention you get from a Ferrari, I currently drive a 991.2 GT3 Touring, under the radar but still a great car to drive!!
Great episode as ever James. It's totally true what you say about Ferrari meets, a friend of the family used to regularly attend his local meet in his Alfa 166 3.0 and was always welcomed with open arms, in the big festival meets.
Great video as usual James. I'm currently lucky enough to be a 1995 MR2 and 718 Boxster owner. I have to be honest the MR2 is probably the one i look forward to driving the most. Now if i could stretch to a 355 i would without hesitation (and keep the MR 😊)
Anyone who gets annoyed by this needs to give their head a wobble. For me, it was always Porsche since i was a kid. I finally got a 996 last year having worked "ruddy hard" to get the cash. It may only be a base Carerra but i love it and to me it's special. As for the ferrari vs porsche community i couldn't say. Alot of that kind of club scene can be a bit 'golf club chairman' and i dont play golf either. Its all subjective so good luck to anyone who gets the car of their dreams and enjoys it.
I still see you as one of the best RUclips automotive reviewers out there. Your context beyond the manufacture spec sheet is wonderful. Your shout out to the teenager with the $1000 beater who shows up to the car meet is appreciated. Nothing better than seeing the next generation of gear head at the auto meet. “It’s raggedy, but it is running, it is mine, and I still turn my own wrenches”
I am selling a property I have and next year I am going to buy something cool. I have thought about all the cars out there from Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini and the Corvette Z06 and I think it will either be a Lamborghini or Ferrari, leaning heavily towards Ferrari. Ferrari really just has that cachet that no other car has. Also their interiors are second to none. I might go left field though and get a Lexus LC500, those are nice. Porsche, unless I am buying a Carrera GT or 959, they just don't really interest me, even the 918 I don't love.

I'm a Porsche man, 991.2 GT3 Touring is my dream car but, I do think the F12, 488 Pista and 458 are stunning too but they attract too much attention for my liking but I do appreciate them and would deffo never call anyone for owning them. Love for all sports/super cars
Yep, you have to be a certain type of individual to be seen in a Ferrari but a GT3 has I think a cooler image and garners more respect from car people.

@@Corvolet5 … While I agree a Ferrari is a fine dining compared to open air picnic with a MX5 the point I’m getting at and one James understands perfectly well from his experience is , ultimately you can’t really enjoy your fine dining Ferrari can you because you’ve got one eye on the road and the other is watching those dreaded kilometres stacking up … hence why there’s never any trouble find low kilometre Ferraris 😉
Here in Canada, a 992 Sport Classic ( the Turbo S with a Manual and a ducktail ) sells for over 300k $ over MSRP simply because is "Limited Edition". I saw one last week parked in front of an upper scale Restaurant and it looks pretty good. However, right next to it there was an F8 Tributo Spider and I have to admit, I'll take the Ferrari any day. It's absolutely stunning.
One thing that gets lost in these debates about brands is model ranges. Ferrari have multiple stunning & enjoyable models. Sadly Porsche is a one trick pony.
Thanks James for another well thought out topic and video. I have been a Porsche collector for many years but during COVID when Porsche prices were as high as Ferrari prices I decided to purchase a new Roma. The car was beautiful, fast and sounded pretty good but the stupid steering wheel controls and lack of some features that are pretty much standard on Porsche and other brands, irritated me so much that I traded it in on a GT3 Touring when an allocation came my way. I guess in the end I am a “function first” person who values style and sizzle but demands excellence in areas Ferrari just does not shine!
I agree with this but I think maybe we’re from the old school. The new school seems to be all about Nurburgring lap time, infotainment, resolution of the screens, whether the buttons and controls feel expensive, and how it sounds when you close the door. Mmm, so satisfying. 🤦🏻♂️
Both Porsche and Ferrari have their pros and cons. Porsches drive really well, are extremely durable, fun to drive and as you point out-subtle unless you know what you are looking at (Carerra GT and 918 Spyder excluded). Ferraris are like prom queens!! They look fantastic, theres a sense of occasion every time you drive it, and many (not all) aspire to own one. They sound amazing, and play to your emotions. As it stands now, the majority of people on the planet will never get to experience a Ferrari. That is sad but also the reason the cars especially the v12, are aspirational items. This also makes it easy to hate/be jealous of those that own them regardless of how nice a chap the owner may be. Ferraris are modern, functional, fast sculpture based on the evolution of going faster/racing. Now having owned a majority of the higher end brands I have to say I really enjoy and appreciate Ferraris. I wish owners drove them more rather than let them sit in a garage. Bentley also is quite special and isn’t it interesting that VW group who shares and retunes its parts and engines across all of its brands decided to create the new Bentley Continental based on the Porsche Panamera platform? Porsche does things right too! The two brands appeal to different likes. If you can get the limited/ special low volume offerings from either brand you are doing great!
I have owned a Ferrari 812 GTS for over 1 year and have had a fun filled bullet proof experience. I looked at a significant number for months, and found one that had the right color combination and options for me. Full PPF takes the worry out of driving it. As a long term 300SL enthusiast for 31+ years who has also owned a 911 as well as other MB models, I find the 812 GTS to be the best all around sports/GT car I have owned or driven. It's a coupe and a convertible. With the comfort seats, my wife enjoys rallies as much as I do. While it had very low milage when purchased, I have added 3000 miles without incident. At low speed in the city it is as serene as our Lexus. At 150 MPH with the top down it feels like you are at 70 MPH. When the "boy racers" pull alongside and rev their engines, I turn the stereo up a bit and wave them on. One of the things I liked best about the 300SL was that most who were not knowledgeable enthusiasts thought that it was a 190SL worth $25-$30K!! While striking, the 812, when best specced remains beautiful yet understated. Like the 300SL, the best time to buy one is during a down market. The folks I have met in the various cars clubs have all been generally nice folks who love cars, while buying what they like and can afford. I bought my Ferrari to drive and enjoy not to store and flip. The most common remark I hear when stopped at a light is "Your car looks spectacular, thanks for driving it so I could see one" ! I will rally with the Porche, MB, Aston Martin, etc folks any time. There is room for all of us in the hobby. After all, my 1st car was a Toyota!
Would be good to have a video comparing monthly and yearly running costs comparing a porsche and Ferrari. From the 90’s early 2000 all the way up to the newer models.
Good vid James and very much one from the heart, and the better for it. I haven’t actually owned a Ferrari, but have had a Lambo, 911, Aston M, Maser and E-type and agree completely that ultimately it’s how a car makes you feel when driving it in a spirited fashion that counts. Re the communities, I’m pretty sure you have proper petrolheads owning all of these brands and they’ll all rub along pretty well, though have to confess that there are indeed probably more “badge owner’s” as opposed to real petrolheads in Porsche land than elsewhere, and that won’t help (not that other brands are completely immune from it)
I see all your points. I have had six Porsches and just bought a gt3. Like so many things in life it all just depends on where you are coming from. I have grown to enjoying racing very much (I’m no good, but enjoy it). It’s just true that when a Ferrari shows up at the track it rarely gets through the day. It never crosses my mind anymore to think about whether the car will break down. And for me anonymity is very much enjoyed. I really thought about getting the gt3 without a wing, since it draws attention. While some people enjoy the attention of a Ferrari, it is actually a show stopper for me. We are lucky to live in a time where both things exist.
I’ve owned 36 cars over about 32 years of driving. Lots of enthusiast stuff like Honda S2000, 300zx twin turbos, and a bunch of German hardware too, Porsche, bmw, mercs. Last year I bought a 1977 308 GTB and I have to say James is right. The feeling of looking at even a “lowly” 308 in the garage brings a different feeling. It’s not the fastest, it’s not the best handling, but when I get in it and pray (lol) that it fires up with the carbs, it’s the most special feeling in the world. The dogleg first, the smells, the sound…I’ll never sell it, this from someone that flips cars every 12-18 months since I was 18….it’s the only experience where I can say, I’ll never sell it.
Hi James. While I agree there is some overlap in prices I see Porsche and Ferrari to be in different niches. I agree that for Ferrari money you get less car with a Porsche (918 and Carrera GT excepted) these days. However, for entry level Porsche money (early water cooled 911s and transaxle cars) there is no Ferrari equivalent. I and many other Porsche owners live quite happily in this latter category. I have little interest in the GT3/GT4s because I don't track my car, but if I was looking for a modern track car it would be Porsche over Ferrari.
Hi Jay! Thanks for the video…. Interesting…. I used to have a cayman S (981) and had no issues at car meets in fact it got lots of love. I loved the community around it and was a member of SCD where Adam Thorby always reminded me how well I’d done managing to buy such a thing. My mum sadly died 2 years ago. When I was young she used to say “if I could I’d buy you a Ferrari” so when we sold her house I had a plan…. Sadly for a relatively new Ferrari it was going to be just over budget and as a guy who loves driving extremely hard and doing track days I had to get real….. I bought a 992 GT3…. I paid slight overs (in Spain the retail is so high that overs go down quite soon after launch). But a 992 GT3 with Warranty or a non approved 10 year old 458 (in Spain they’re the same money!) …. I was just terrified of the maintenance. I’ve put 12k kms on mine. 4x track days and once it’s warmed up it does 9k rpm every single journey. I just extended the warranty by 3 years so it’s covered until Sept 2027…. I couldn’t do that with the old Ferrari. I just couldn’t.
And I hope my dear mum is up there looking down on me and my 8 year old Frankie who’s obsessed with our blue Smurf enjoying our trips out for breakfast on a Sunday and our drives in the mountains with a smile. 😊🥹
I've been on the receiving end of car snobbery, and also had some great interaction with true car enthusiasts when out in my toy. OK, it's neither a Ferrari or a Porsche, but a Toyota GT86 (I really wanted a GR86, but just couldn't get hold of one, and there's no way I'm going to pay over the odds from the flippers) I love my car, it's pampered to death, but also driven hard when it does go out. I find that folk with VW's, Audi's, Alfa's, Ford's, etc., that cost just over what mine did (around 30K) are the worse for derogatory comments, yet those with their 100K+ cars are always friendly and want to have an intelligent conversation. I did do some geeky investigation and have worked out that my car is one of only about 7-10 of the exact make, model, year, colour and spec that exist in the UK, but to me, it's not an investment, it's a car, and for that reason it should be used and enjoyed. Oh and by the way.... more content while on the road, not sat at a desk. You are a car channel, and we want to see cars 😁
21:40 This is why I'm a long time subscriber. Like James, I'm a car enthusiast. If you love your car, and want to talk about why you love it, then even if it's not my thing, then I will enthuse with you. A friend of mine loves her Audi's, I currently own a BMW and both of us bought our current car with a lot of heart, and while we poke fun at each other for typical BMW and Audi stereotypes, it is for a laugh, and we both love that we love our cars, and it rubbed off on another friend, who despite saying she wanted a sensible car, went and bought a two-seat convertible, because it was going to be cheap enough to run and she wanted it. A friend of mine with kids even spent ages enthusing how perfect it was as a family car, and how the designer had obviously known what features parents actually needed, and I enthused with him, because passion for cars is not linked to the 0-60 time.
Always informative - far better than just comparing specs. All points considered, I think one with a trident on the badge would be my pref. Also like the channel mixed with the occasional garage video.
I always thought about owning a Ferrari or a Porsche but after long hours of thinking about it I stayed with Skoda.
Indeed. Having weighed up something with a bit of heft and aspiration i have decided to stick with shoe leather. lol.
Simply Clever
…the main thing is; 32:54 you’re thinking 😀
Superb joke...i own one too!
Don't underestimate the power of dreams, if you follow them you might end up way further you were expecting
That said, even if I HAD the coin, I probably would have favored the Porsche for a few reasons:
1) Insurance - rates are cheaper in the USA for Porsche & insurance won't require you to have a lockable garage or motion camera fixed on your car, as some insurances will.
Thanks, some sense here at last @dB👍🏻
Thank you for the insight! This has been an enlightening read.
Booya! Totally agree with everything you said...
You are a boringly sensible person - just like me - 991.1 great for all those reasons - No doubting a Ferrari is spectacular, always love looking at someone else's 😋
Exactly...boring......@@denisw398
I agree with you about James. 👍👍👏 Always has a good word to say about others.
Lol, I've just this second finished a bacon and egg + plus tea.
Great minds.
Aww you guys. You're making me crave a bacon sarnie now
Having never been to Britain since 1986, I now pack a craving for a bacon sarnie in the English countryside, transported there, of course, by a 550.

I totally agree. The Ferrari 430 has been a great owner experience. All the best to tou
I have been daily driving a Cayman S 987.1 for the last 6 years, summer and winter, and still do. Was seriously considering 360 or F430 for good weather weekend/evening fun, but this summer I bought a Caterham... 🥴
My neighbor has a gorgeous red 16M Spider and to this day it's still one of my favorite cars. I think the 360 is meh but the 355 is gorgeous.
correct, even the comment sections of porsche videos constantly have comments like "yeah but its not a 911"
If they sneer at your Caymen S and drive some kind of Widow Maker 911 ... just laugh it off, its only a matter of time before they end up in ditch, or they never squeeze the loud pedal.
I’ve never owned such exotica but in 55 yrs of car ownership I’ve never bought one to impress others. If it appeals to me and ticks the boxes that’s required at the time I’m a happy bunny.

In my head ferrari is and always will be a brand above porsche.
two of his five are about image projection & attraction to others. one can be proud of their machine, but self-worth being invested in the opinions of others is a form of insecurity - or being a performer in the entertainment industry.

Exactly 😂
it's the middle car or boat 'crab' mentality and it's very real!
That seems more like a corvette than a Porsche issue. Way to many built and common like a Toyota here.
your experience points to the distinction between those who are "lifers" & those who just arrived, w/ little or no history in the field.
Thanks
I pushed the like button as you described the Ferrari community, and then wished I could push it again as you ranted about the fact that its passion that matters, not ownership. Great vid.
Absolutely respect your humble and friendly opinions and willingness to share nice positive content James. 🙌
Me being someone who is generally quite introverted still, this welcoming attitude is something i've needed for awhile, and I couldn't be happier meeting some truly interesting characters in this group, it really changed my perspective on thinking Porsche owners are all suited up business snobs, and I was the odd one out due to my age and occupation, but this couldn't be further from the truth in my experience lol
To give context, I live in North East Scotland, so i'm not sure what Porsche owners are like anywhere else around the UK.
We've got them snobs aplenty Stateside😂
@@strangerdanger8462 Over here they are only snobby to non-ferrari owners (and mondial owners), but once you own a real ferrari, you're one of them.
Here in southern California..most 911 owners are true car enthusiast. We welcome and run with everybody.
I would 100% push the gt3rs anywhere you want... But not an 812 or a 599. It's just not something you're supposed to do if you get me.
@@V1ctwrAr1stos Then that would mean that the 599 GTO and the 812 Competizione are meaningless.
🤔 To each his own, I say what ever floats your boat. But some of us mere mortals prefer driving 🚘 a Bentley !!..
I just left a similar comment. My Porsche is great, the Ferrari is special.
Enjoy!
To be fair I bet if you had a Ferrari you'd be looking at Porsches too
Both makes are for people who have deep pockets!!😁
Idk anyone who owns a ferrari and dont see many about, they just dont have much appeal for a younger audience.
I mean Porsche is still better, faster on the Nurburgring for less

I came from owning every type of 911 to a 458 spider. I have no doubt across country my old 911 Turbo would demolish the big Fiat but at anything under 120mph it was just boring. Very very competent but dull. The 458 by comparison is exciting at 30 mph and 3 years of ownership later has proved to be more reliable than the 911 was. In the modern world where even a hot hatch is monstrously fast a car should be exciting first and foremost and the Ferrari has that in spades.
Get a F12 next.
Lol I think you Made the wrong comparison in terms of performances. You should compare the 911 turbo to something comparable in the Ferrari lineup and it will be always faster and more exciting
@@alessandrob.1354he said the 911 had better performance but wasn’t as exciting?

Having owned a 992 and now having a Roma, the Ferrari feels special in any type of driving, even stationary, whereas the Porsche felt like a high performance Golf until you really pushed it ( then it was amazing!).
Did you test drive the portofino ?
I didn't consider a Portofino, I just fell in love with the Roma from launch but didn't think I could stretch to owning one. I had actually ordered another 992 ( GTS) but waited so long that I eventually cancelled it and took a deep breath and ordered the Roma!
I could listen to a Jaguar V8 burble all day long.....I was educated by a TVR owner when I said I didn't like the sound of the McLaren V8....and he said "ahh that's because you prefer a cross plane crank to a flat plane crank". EV owners are evangelical to the point of being deranged. Your car knowledge and video filming skills are unmatched. 30 minutes of your video pass like 5 of others.

The superiority of a Ferrari is not only the greater power, since one can install a big turbo into a Honda to get more power. The truth of the matter is the way the Ferrari delivers the power, and the handling, the smell and of course the sound.
I had this dilemma, but ended up with a RAV4 instead
Thanks for mentioning me James appreciate your words 25:00
Least I could do!
Spot-on analysis Jay! Well done!! from a Porsche 992 owner
I still cannot believe you don't like the 458.

Fun fact, the horse on the badge for both cars is actually the same 😃 Both are the horse from the Stuttgart coat of arms.
The ferrari horse originated from the side of an Italian pilots plane and he let Enzo use it.
@christhompson9420 yep, he adopted it from a plane he shot down, and that was a German plane that originated from Stuttgart, the German plane had the Stuttgart coat of arms on it.
Well you learn something new everyday 🙂

@bio4546 yes, I read that too, he only adopted the prancing horse after his first aerial victory, three possible sources exist for the horse, one a distant family crest, another a link to his Calvary past and the last one the trophy from the Stuttgart plane. Some Ferrari main dealers list the Stuttgart theory as most likely.

So the video make really good points about clubs, communities and things… But I don’t care that, I’m about the driving experience… And you truly can enjoy a lot pushing Porsche to the max any time you want! And then it’s Ferrari experience, that it must feels like owning, a Ferrari… 😮💨
So after all, when I wanted to clear my head with this video, I am more confused than ever.
Best part is that you don't look like a prick when driving it either, unlike a Ferrari (when they are running).
That´s why I sold my 488 Spider, to much look at me vibes and the car was aweful on the track!!@@MrSchn3ll
Apparently you’re unaware of the old joke, what’s the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine.
@@GTC4cam Tell me :)
Really interesting thought provoking perspectives. A great video, thank you !
Been watching your stuff quite a bit lately. Thank you for the content and positive messages.
With you on this, but not with that awful 296 GTB blue stripe and moustache paint scheme...

Porsche gets the job done, Ferrari gets the job done with style
Ferrari sometimes doesn't do the job, but it's still with style.
The blue on the red looks absolutely disgusting.
Entirely agree. I have owned both. The Ferrari brand is just wonderful. It has emotion and passion in spades.
Anything on your list but the Porsche. Everything on that list is leagues ahead.

I'd say 20% outdoor filming and in your office discussing the various points Jay. Thank you for another interesting video 👍
@@cw205mi16that is subjective. For me, my Scud gets way more love from an average car person than my 718 Spyder. Both great cars but didn’t buy for anyone’s “respect”.
@@2006Vantageno doubt its special. I don't actually think the two brands can be compared - Ferrari is a way more exclusive a brand, I think the video is just being provocative and Jayemm has an obvious beef with Porsche because one time someone said something mean about his mums Boxster. Porsche 911 GT cars transcend their (new) price point and have a broader desirability imo, which jayem seems not to realise.
A genuine man presenting a genuine point of view. Fabulous points made sir and hopefully one day I'll own one. Cheers 🍻
James while a Ferrari may be a Ferrari but deep down you know a MX5 is the answer 😝😜🤪🚗
Miata is always the answer!🤔
Miata is overrated, and not comparable to supercars. You don't compare a McDonalds burger to a 4 star meal.
@@Corvolet5 sounds like you've had a sense of humour bypass... hope you recover soon 🤣🤣

Loved that intro!
Great soundtrack. I suggest making a compilation of all sounds you've got, showing some intro footage, then having a quiz at the end.
IT'S POR-SHAH!! 😂
(I also say it the way you do, and don't care about how others say it)
Another great video, thank you.
As a 997.2 Carrera S and M3 CSL owner, I have to agree with most of what you said!
That concludes the argument pretty well
How much is an F8 spider? Twice the price of the Porsche? More?
Lovely video. One of my fave RUclipsrs by far. And I trust your reviews, having owned many of the best of the best of all the marques 90s on
Here in Au owning a Ferrari is still exclusive while owning a Porsche still makes one a wanker.
😂😊😅😆😁😋😂😃☺️😀🙃👊
I think most people in the UK think drivers of either are wankers, but then we have a real inverse snob thing with expensive sports cars.
Love this content. Jay, you are truly a working class hero. Your love of below thousand quid bangers is inspiring.
It's not so much about what you drive It's about how it makes feel when you drive it I have a mustang GT which always puts a smile on my face
👍🤔 Excatly, what ever floats your boat and makes you feel better and happy 😊, is the right car for you !!...
Same for me with Lotus Evora GT430.
I agree with this but I think maybe we’re from the old school. The new school seems to be all about Nurburgring lap time, infotainment, resolution of the screens, whether the buttons and controls feel expensive, and how it sounds when you close the door. Mmm, so satisfying. 🤦🏻♂️
@@GTC4cam I'm 62 so I'm definitely old school lol
Ferrari has style that Porsche will never have. That is coming from someone that owns a 997.2 GTS manual.
Ferrari >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Porsche
I like the conversations while behind the wheel because it gives it that same vibe a review does (without the review of course)
This should have been:
1.Because it's a Ferrari
2.Because it's a Ferrari
3.Because it's a Ferrari
4.Because it's a Ferrari
5.Because it's a Ferrari
Nice to see all your hard work come through now mate growing more, ive watched since the beginning great stuff pal keep it up
Both Porsche and Ferrari have their pros and cons.
I would never want to live in a world that had a Ferrari as common as a Porsche
Lamborghini is getting bad enough I see them to much.
With the modern cars, it's very much a toss up.
Good vid James and very much one from the heart, and the better for it. I haven’t actually owned a Ferrari, but have had a Lambo, 911, Aston M, Maser and E-type and agree completely that ultimately it’s how a car makes you feel when driving it in a spirited fashion that counts. Re the communities, I’m pretty sure you have proper petrolheads owning all of these brands and they’ll all rub along pretty well, though have to confess that there are indeed probably more “badge owner’s” as opposed to real petrolheads in Porsche land than elsewhere, and that won’t help (not that other brands are completely immune from it)
It's always been Porsche
F80 looks like ass
As a customer once stated, Porsche is the better car but you get more p*ssy with Ferrari.
I own the 5k boxster shit box and love it 😄 although bought it ten years ago and is still worth 5k LOL
No such thing as a boxster shit box. They are epic cars, each and every one. (I know you were mostly joking) Best car Porsche makes, in my book.
@hbullock I love mine mate. Just keeping in 'theme' with the video
❤Great watch on a cold frosty 🥶 Saturday morning!
Love you to bits mate, your attitude is wonderful.
The blue interior is hideous. Hid-e-OUS. Unconscionably so.
That lane marker at 0:56 reminds me of that awful scene in the Ferrari movie. :(
There is FERRARI....and then we have the rest..
That's very true. People can say whatever they want but Ferrari will always be the most special car brand.
Agree with everything, but Ferraris are a lot more expensive to buy and maintain. It’s not comparing apples with apples
I was quite happy watching the intro and listening to the music.
I've been on the receiving end of car snobbery, and also had some great interaction with true car enthusiasts when out in my toy.
OK, it's neither a Ferrari or a Porsche, but a Toyota GT86 (I really wanted a GR86, but just couldn't get hold of one, and there's no way I'm going to pay over the odds from the flippers)
I love my car, it's pampered to death, but also driven hard when it does go out.

Tell this to Jay Leno. Watch his interview on why he’d never own a Ferrari
Beat me to it lol
Leno is just a stubborn lambo fanboy, that's the only reason he doesn't buy a Ferrari. It's his loss.
Always informative - far better than just comparing specs. All points considered, I think one with a trident on the badge would be my pref. Also like the channel mixed with the occasional garage video.
