I'm glad you wanted to learn all hair types. I'm white and have curly hair. I've gone to salons where the stylists don't know what to do with my hair. One time when I came in for a trim, the lady asked if I wanted a blow out. I said no, I wanted it curly, so she had me leave the salon with wet hair, no product.... Another place, I wanted it shaped up, and explained that I still wanted my hair long (i was getting married about 6 months later). The lady had me stand up to cut my hair and it dried curly ABOVE MY SHOULDERS. She took way too much off, I wanted to cry.

I had a similar experience in my first salon. Commission only and 3 haircuts during a 10 hour shift if I got lucky. I worked Saturdays and Sundays all summer, stuck in the break room while my friends were out enjoying the weather. Salons need to wake up and realize that they need to do more than just provide a chair if they want to retain stylists. You can't pay someone pennies and expect them to stay. And let people take time off!

SAME! was working 65 hrs a week and barely making 300-400 a week. She didn’t like giving me time off till a year after I would just say “ I’m NOT coming in today. See you tomorrow “
I became the only stylist there and when I left she closed down shortly after.

My first job in healthcare was kind of like this in the sense that it looked good from the outside and it was a small clinic that had more seasoned staff that I could “learn from”. Mentoring is what I said I wanted, meanwhile within the first month I worked there all of the more seasoned staff that were to be mentoring me quit and then a therapist moved and they transferred me to an office where I was by myself without any assistants or front desk help. I was trying to treat patients, answer phones, and verify insurance benefits. 😭it was terrible I lasted 6 months, I was literally crying in my car after ever shift. It’s better to properly support your employees and treat people like people instead of like disposable goods. Also her daughter definitely groomed you to make you feel comfortable enough to take the job. They probably planned to rope you in as soon as she found out you were in cosmetology school.

I was in the same situation it was horrible that salon was my first job out of hair school and since I am an extreme people pleaser I gave a lot, showed how motivated I was and serious about the job but there where no thank you plus the pay check was ridiculous. Ended up fainting du to overworking myself. I left over a year ago and couldn't be happier about that. I'm in a much better workplace now! thank you for sharing this with us I feel less alone 🥲 love your content ❤

I’ve worked with plenty of women in other jobs before and since then and never experienced such cattiness, rudeness, mean girl behavior as I did in salons. I went to cosmetology school right from high school then I did college, and I am so glad I didn’t stick with cosmetology cause I wouldn’t want to deal with that anymore.

Holy. Shit. Did we work for the same people!? Jk I’m in Iowa but WOW - literally the same exact experience at two different salons for me before I found my salon home. One boss was “super religious,” wouldn’t allow breaks, overbooked us, underpaid us (we even contact workforce development and reported her), I lived half an hour away & was forced to stay late / come in during terrible Iowa weather & had to accept clients even at closing time. She didn’t want to work, I had Christmas Eve with my son because he went to his dads Christmas Day that year & I had to work a full day while she had it off because, “that’s just the way the cookie crumbles,” forced to clean and reclean vs learn anything new - left that salon for a lesser of two evils; yet that one also did shady shit with my pay, I was the only one who worked while she was never there; the rule book grew from one page to a literal binder; changes in dress code last minute, I remember she got a new, huge Michael Kors (at the time was as fancy as you could get in our area) handbag while the same week I fed my son a hot dog bun & pbj for lunch because we didn’t have food.
FUCK THEM. It’s such a sad, COMMON problem in our field. So many “bosses” take advantage of people & it’s truly sickening.

Thank you Sam for this video. It brought so many memories of a salon I worked at. I lasted only a month since I ended up getting covid. Before that I remember telling them I had all the symptoms and wasn’t feeling good they made me still come to work then coming to find out I had covid. Then I would be the one to open the salon by myself a week later after just starting at the job I’ll had a this things to do and let me tell you I was able to do laundry, clean each station, change barbeside, shampoo area etc all before opening time. Literally even if there was nothing to do they would want me to be cleaning the clean floor if I have too in order to not be standing watching them do hair. I was hungry to learn. Anyways once I came back to work from having covid I was like I can work every day except Saturday it doesn’t matter the time and she was like sorry hope things change in the near future but you have to be here on Saturday if you want to continue working here. I was like thank you for the opportunity I think I’ll have to pass on this. Mind you during covid I was hospitalized was truly so sick had even oxygen that’s how bad I was no one from my work ever checked on me to see how I was doing.

I'm so glad I found this video bc I'm going through some of this stuff at the moment. I left my last salon which was a franchise place. I loved working there but there was so much drama and the boss was like you described... Always talking behind people's back, talks to people like she was better than them, held me back from doing color so she could do all the color services, but then claimed she would rather be doing cuts bc there's more money to make... All that kind of stuff.
Came to a different salon. They said they get walk ins but, not like I'm used to. So, I thought okay, cool they still get them, I have potential to get clients since I don't have any. Well, been here for 4 months and only gained 2 clients. I'm part time and only getting $10/hour and barely any tips. The salon is like you said, very old school, everyone except myself and another girl are 50 or close to it. Everything is kept by paper and pencil, no computer except the small, cheap ass cash register. They all have their clientele and I literally sit on my ass doing nothing all day while Id actually RATHER be working on clients and using the 20k I spent on school and gaining more experience and education.
I thought I was the only one who went thru these things but, I hope you found a salon that fits you and your needs and wants as a stylist ❤

I've discussed education levels on curly hair with multiple hairstylists. It's extremely nerve wrecking when going to a new hairstylist because many aren't used to or don't know how to work with curly hair. The two Mexican hairstylists I've been to I trust because our hair is thick and they have family members with curls. Still, one of them doesn't even have a diffuser. Unfortunately, I had to find another one in my college town twice. The first one has curly hair and as a white woman knows how to detangle thick hair. She's on maternity leave so the second one I went to I asked if she did curly hair while in the chair. She said she does hair curlier than mine which is 3a. The way she detangled my hair was in a huge section after freshly balyaging and bleaching it. She asked if it was normally that tangled and I said no I usually detangle in sections as my neck was stiff and my head was moving. After that, she sort of took my advice and had a bit of an easier time. Also, she broke my hair after asking what I was nervous about and responding with "I just don't want my hair to break."

I meant to ask you which are your top 3 fragrances from Dossier. I ordered Ambery Saffron but it smells too musky. What would you recommend I try?

My first salon destroyed my passion and hunger for hair. After 9 months being there, during cos school up to when I got behind the chair, i was burnt. Out. ALREADY. And I have not done hair since because it was so traumatizing and anxiety inducing. They were money hungry monsters that took complete advantage of new stylists, gave them deadlines, gave them quotas and “if you dont have someone in your chair, do you really want to be in this profession? Do you really WANT it?” When I was BRAND NEW, 3 months fresh from beauty school. They have a high turnover rate and i have spoke to many girls from the aftermath of that salon who left and said that salon destroyed their passion and made them quit hair. They didnt do anything illegal from my point of view, even though there are rumors that they do some illegal money activity (i could definitely see them doing from the character of one of the owners who is a complete cee u next tuesday) it was BAD. How did you keep your passion?, because i am a year and a half out and still traumatized. Luckily I as well had a bachelors degree i could fall back on….but i feel like a failure😞

I didn't stay that long because I could tell being there was making me second guess the industry I was in. After I left, I found another salon that provided me with support, encouragement, and tons of education. THAT is what helped me fall back in love with doing hair and reignited my passion for hair. Don't let one bad experience throw you off course. Remember why you entered this field in the first place. Find a salon that will treat you with respect and help you flourish.

This is me too… I graduated in 2020 and haven’t done hair since early 2021. Traumatized by the first salon I worked at. It totally shut me down from the industry. 😬

If you need a reason to keep doing these videos: I litterally changed my mind and decided not to do cosmetology because of the @$$hole clients... now I WANT to do it more than ever. Something about you sharing these experiences makes me want to take on these challenges instead of being afraid of them. I want to take these lessons and apply them instead of run from these possible situations

I'm in the UK, things are different here 2 years free training and paid £35 a week for 37 hour a week or was haven't been in the trade now for alot of years. it was a conveyor belt in every salon I worked in over 20 plus years. Very rarely got to eat lunch, wee etc. I liked my customers so would stay later then instead of it being my choice it was expected. In the end it was I didn't care about the work just when I'd get home. Where I lived there was only a few posh salons where you could colour or cut ( no beauty unless you trained separately) so you get the pic, full head foils in 3/4 of an hour an hour if lucky, with fine sections, cut and blow dry in-between if unlucky another lot of full head foils, alot of times no toner time. I just couldn't do the work I wanted. As for the work colleagues it was awful, I had alot of mental health issues it and I was told by some I had no idea what depression was, I could do a series of story times on it if I had a channel. Looking back I just do t know how I didn't just jump in the river. Really enjoyed this Sam❤️

I completely agree that you are so beautiful and your skin looks incredible and glowy and perfect!!! I love hearing all the tea from these stories. I’m training to be a makeup artist so luckily I haven’t had to deal with any crazy experiences yet but I know it will definitely happen sometime lmao. I laughed so hard when you were like “I have several pages of notes” 😂 love you and your videos, babe!
Ps. Completely understand about being able to call yourself a pro when you didn’t yet have experience on other hair types. That’s how I feel about makeup because there are just SO many white people around my area and I want experience on every skin tone and skin type I can get before I call myself a professional! I want to be able to do the makeup of anyone who sits in my chair and make them look amazing. I can definitely relate to that feeling of wanting to learn and practice as much as possible to gain as much knowledge and skills as I can!

Thank you! I put a thick layer of Nivea cream (the one in the blue jar) on my face every night, and that has made my skin really plump and glowy. I think I'm wearing the Make Up Forever HD Skin foundation here.

I am absolutely traumatized from a bad salon experience. I haven’t went back to hair since. It’s been 8 months or so.
No receptionist constantly running around like a chicken with my head cut off making barely anything for the work I’m doing. Toxic catty environment. Making me work and not paying me. Giving me grief for me grandfather dying and me having to go to the funeral… giving me grief for having to take a day off because I was IN THE ER.
Oh yeah I wasn’t allowed to touch my schedule and they overbooked me so badly that I was having panic attacks while people are walking out after screaming at me.
Had to stay super late too. They would accept anyone at any time basically even if it was a huge project with hair all matted up and nasty.

Why does this sound like the old Salon I worked at? I'm a nail tech and the salon owner went off on me in front of customers before. Tell me to walk her through doing a full set of nails and gel application. I did and I did it all correctly. She was quiet and walked away. She gave me her clients when she had something to do. Her clients liked how I did her nails, then she got upset that they kept booking with me and moved the appointment to her. She was so toxic. Still is. Now I have a job I love. The managers here so much better!

This is why I could never be a hair stylist. I love the creativity and artistry that goes into doing hair and makeup. I respect the talent and knowledge of all hair dressers. I just could never do the drama and politics of being in a salon with catty young women, isn’t my vibe at all.
