Anyone else like to sit in quiet and play on their phones while processing? I hate small talk and just want to decompress while getting my hair done.
Hairstylists arent your friend, theyre doing a job/service. People get the lines blurred after a while and get in their feelings. This girl sounds like her feelings were hurt that she didnt get all of the attention

Yes!!! I mean I like a good conversation every now and then but when I come get my hair done I’d much rather just chill. I don’t mind sitting quietly on my phone while processing and as long as I’m not left for an extraordinary length of time where my hair could be compromised it doesn’t bother me one bit.

So, a half hour for color, a half hour for the next client's color, and then a half hour for the cut for the first client. Your time=money my girl. Give yourself more credit and don't tolerate people who don't think your time is deserving of appropriate compensation. She can touch grass.

I don’t understand people that need their stylist to sit and talk to them while their hair is processing. I have NEVER expected that from a hairdresser and I like to scroll on my phone and do my own thing during that time. Idk if this is just the hairstylists in my area but none of them have sat and consistently talked to me the entire time I was there and if a hairstylist did that to me I would be a little weirded out by it to be honest. Having clients is so stressful at times, and I’m glad to see this from a perspective of a different career that also deals with having clients.

Customers are the main reason I quit doing hair, I was just too sensitive for this career :( People can be awful. It’s good you share this for any future stylists out there. Sorry this happened to you. Honestly I recently stopped going to the hairstylist I has been going to for a couple of years. My hair always came out nice but the customer service was not great. I gave her too many chances and I just decided to go else where. I never said anything to her or anyone else. I always took the first appointment, but she over booked every time, would let me sit waiting while she worked on someone else even after the blower turned off, would soak my back when she wash my hair, was very rough washing my hair and so many other things that really made me not want to go to her anymore. I am introvert so I don’t need my hairstylist sitting next to me. I never complained, just went elsewhere. I love watching your videos cause they do help with understanding both sides. Also learning about hair and color. Tfs

It’s so frustrating how hairstylists don’t realize that double booking inconveniences the client. The owner of my salon has a new client every 30 minutes and it just doesn’t make any sense, he’s always behind, none of the experience is relaxing it’s just a means to an end. The whole hair industry is run by overgrown toddlers who haven’t had life experience outside of that one specific very non traditional job, and it just leads to bad business.

I never complained to my stylist or anyone else about my experience. Yes, I wrote a comment, but no one knows me or who I was talking about. My hairstylist did great work and I stayed with her for sometime for that reason, but her customer service wasn’t good. It didn’t take me years to figure it out. I just had conflicting feelings going else where because I was use to this person doing my hair. Trying to go to someone new was stressful too, because it’s your hair. It got to a point I just didn’t have the patience anymore and did just that….went elsewhere. Like Sam said it’s good to talk about these things. You see both sides, as a client and as a stylist.

I used to work retail for years and though it differs a bit from being hands on in the way your work is, I always felt I took things personally if something didn't go right, that left a customer unsatisfied. I think when you take pride in your work and someone comes along and tries to shoot that down, it's very hard not to feel attacked, especially in the manner this lady did to you. Whenever people are provided a service, they just let the worst come out it seems, I hope you have a good rest of your week!

It’s seems like she may have some personal issues and lacks understanding of how you’re trying to help her make good decisions as an expert.

Hope this happens less often but, as you said “it happens to the best, because we are human”!

Obsessed with that first color correction- I am currently in the same position as that client from bleaching my ends and using Sally’s brown dye at my root. 😂😅That final result gives me hope. The thing I love about you as a stylist is that not only are you honest about expectations and the fact a color correction is needed but not too proud to at least see what can be done. It’s night and day that before and after. The blend is 🔥. You are so talented, Sam! I’d drive from PA to NC any day lol.

Sometimes we go through experiences to know when a red flagged is presented in the future. Sometimes we miss it. It did remind me as a client in a salon, that I am just a client. Not get to wrapped up in their and my story. Hope that makes sense.😅

    Girllllll felt.
Today my coworker had a lady come in and give her flowers and beg for her to do her hair still, after causing a scene and storming out mad when her perm didn’t take well the previous time she had come in.
It’s amazing how some clients will go to extra lengths to get a stylist in trouble or try to “tattle” on them, and then realize later on that they were doing their job and trying their best.
    You can’t fix stupid 🙃🙃🙃

I’m also a stylist who used to do hair full time and only do it part time now because of this very reason.. I got so burnt out and sick of the things we have to deal with. I also became the receptionist of a salon a few years ago and slowly started doing clients again just like you so I can relate to everything that you share with, the anxiety of dealing with difficult clients like this. What you are feeling is 100% normal and extremely frustrating. I’m sending you all the love and positive energy 💖 you are an amazing stylist and human being!!!💕

I’m sorry this happened to you! I’m a stylist too. The worst is when you’re completely blindsided like that, when you thought everything was going fine. I think you’re on to something about her needing control and lashing out. I had a client email my salon once, complaining that I was “scurrying around and dropping things in my haste” (literally no idea what this meant, she literally said “scurrying” 😂 like yeah, maybe I walk with a purpose, I’m here to do my job and stay on schedule) and also that I had to stop and mix more colour 😅 it really does feel like a personal attack and is hard to not take personally.

Daily, I receive wonderful tips and great compliments; however there are ALWAYS times when something goes awry. I absolutely try my best to fix it and make the guest’s experience positive. Sometimes you just CANT… it’s the reality of customer service. It hurts too because I really care about my job and company. People are spending a lot of money to go out to eat and I want them to leave happy. I know you feel the same.

This is part of the reason I’m not doing hair anymore. I might get back into it but between this and health issues from covid I just can’t do it. I’ve had clients berate me in front of everyone for doing exactly what they told me to.. saying I ruined their days and their hair and that they absolutely hate it. It sucks. I felt good about some of them too thinking I did a good job and was proud of myself and then they just crush you instead of being honest and chill about it like a normal person.

Thank you for sharing your experience, this literally happened to me yesterday. My client after 6 years of great hair and good relationship, was not happy with her hair I offered to fix the warmth in her hair , but she said our time ran its course. There’s actually more to the story, but it’s too lengthy to explain, but you get the gist of it. I was deeply saddened and upset and apologized. And of course it made me feel terrible and then I start to second-guess myself and literally went over in my mind what happened . I’ve been doing this job for 24 years and most of the time it’s a good experience but there’s those few that just tear you up and make you doubt yourself and feel like crap and you just wanna give up. Yes we are human and we are not perfect. All the time all we can do is try to learn from it sometimes clients can literally just turn on you. Ya just gotta pick your self up and keep going.

I'm sorry that happened :( But that goes to show that it still happens, even to stylists who have decades of experience! It's impossible to please everyone all the time, and people can be flakey. We have to just remember to focus on the positive experiences and not let the few bad ones make us doubt ourselves.

This weekend I had a booking for a babylights retouch and she reached out to me and booked with me, let’s just say she rescheduled 3 times with me. 😫 my mistake was trying to accommodate her the 3 time, but you learn from these situations and the good thing is this time I got a non refundable deposit. So that helped a bit but wasn’t able to schedule any body else 😅

Oh Sam!! I’m so sorry it worked out like that for you! I know how you are and how you feel about your clients, so I’m certain you took it personally! You’re right.. you can strive to be the BEST hairstylist and give the BEST service and there’s always gonna be that 1-2% of people who are just assholes or impossible to deal with. You are never going to please absolutely everyone. You just have to walk away from the situation knowing that you’re a bomb ass hairstylist, you always give your best and it just didn’t work out this time.
And I am not sticking up for this girl by any means, but I just have to say that some people have a really hard time being social and they can get a lot of anxiety when dealing with the “general public” I know because I am one of those people. Personally, I have walked out of many hair sessions thanking my stylist, tipping her really well and telling her I loved it, even to the point of raving about it, just to get into my car and cry all the way home. I know I know! It sounds really stupid and crazy but the fear of confrontation is so much, that I’d rather just take the L than to tell the stylist I didn’t like my hair. I dated a hairstylist and I know how personal y’all take it! It’s your craft, it’s your art and the last thing you wanna hear is that someone didn’t like all the hard work you put into their hair, plus I would never want to hurt anyone’s feelings! I’m just saying this to give you a little more perspective on where someone can be coming from because I know you were super confused when she hit you with the “I don’t really like it”, especially when you’ve had a very long day and you’ve finally made it to the finish line, ready to close down shop, who tf is going to start doing highlights to fix something?!
Well, if anything it made a great YT story! Those are my fave Sam Vey vids! Haha! 😂❤

Thank you for sharing this! I’m a hairstylist that double books and I understand! It’s sad to lose a few clients who get the ick from being double booked, especially the sweet easy ones, but the ones who respect you as a professional will understand we need to double book to live a fruitful life on a salary that makes all the hard work worth it! Also I wanna say that this is the reason I never ever mention an adjustment to my other clients, not out of insecurity but because it can subconsciously makes them doubt their own hair
