  • Sharing a bad experience I had with a hair color client, so hopefully you can learn from my experiences and know how to handle these types of situations in the future! No shade to any of my past clients!!! I just think sharing these stories is entertaining and helpful for other stylists, so we all know we're not alone when these things happen to us. Let me know if you want to hear more stories like this one, because I definitely have more to share! Lol!

I know the feeling my dear. I went from electrical engineer to home reorganization to fast food to licensed cosmetologist (about 9 years full time 2 days off a month - I was always nicknamed the CASH COW) to now ready to work CVS retail associate jobs. Hairstylist has been the hardest draining job among all. And once the clients move on once you lose your salon or job they forget your entire existence and only contact you when they want you to take toxic hair salon jobs so you can get their hair done. Lol. I'll just keep my license renewed. I have done the corporate salon, the full service salon and also owned my own salon and done everything I love about hair and gotten it out of my system. Now I don't even want to look at people's hair except my house visit clients or if I get a stylist job for a company to do their workers hair or something but the public I AM ALL SET.

I am a 3rd generation hairstylist in my family, the best piece of advice I have ever gotten was from my Nan. She told me the way you present your confidence is everything. Doesn’t matter if you’re not confident on the inside.. yes in your words but it even comes down to using your hands. A firm touch tells the client you know what you’re doing. A wimpy shampoo when you’re not using good pressure with your palms and finger tips tells the client you don’t know what you’re doing. It is this advice that has helped me to tame even the worst of clients.

I am a client 👀 and this is just making me realize what my stylist goes through. I’ve gone to her for many years, and I’m not what I’d call a nightmare client, but I am one of those picky, worried people. I remember when I went blonde I was horrified by the orange stage, but just sat silently praying my stylist would come through. Ofc she did. But then I missed my dark hair a couple years later. And then I missed blonde a year after that 😭 and I’ve been bright orange-red, brown, all shades in between, and I feel bad for my stylist having to keep changing my hair. She is so talented that I really should trust her more, but for some reason I’m always underwhelmed when I first see the final product. It’s not until I go home, wash it and style it myself that I realize what a great job she did. After all this time, I just tell her I love it knowing I eventually will. In fact she just did my hair a perfect brown and it’s literally my favorite but I’m dying to style it myself 💀 what’s wrong with me lol it’s not like I’m better at curling my hair than she is, she’s a professional and my iron barely works

I am so like that as well! I usually love the color result.... but for some reason I have to style my own hair. They do the best blowouts, etc.... but idk.... I don't know what it is, I HAVE to be the one to style it- or it doesn't look right to me. I think maybe it's because I have shorter hair, and I have a very specific way I like my ends to be straight, etc... even when I have waves, or loose curls... I've never been able to put my finger on it- but it has to be styled by me, then I love it! :)

I’m a picky blonde client too! I’m actually a very laid back, easy to please person usually, but over the years, I’ve had a handful of stylists (mostly in cheaper salons) than didn’t know the first thing about blonde hair. Several stylists nearly ruined my hair (fried to a crisp, burned my scalp with bleach, turned my hair bright orange when I asked for ashy blonde, etc)… so now I have a complex about stylists touching my blonde hair! We’re a military family, so we move around every 3 years & I have to find a new stylist. Lol but my bad experiences have made me “jumpy” and on edge when a new stylist does my hair 😂

I'm an introvert and after almost 10 years full time I'm drained out of all the energy. I am actually going for a job interview for a retail associate job at CVS tomorrow and then I will get a second job at starbucks or dunkin or something. I don't do perms, I don't advertise for vivids and unless it's something I'm super confident I can do I will refer them to someone else, I will refer most corrective color situations to someone else, if someone describes what they want and the vibes are off for me I refer them to someone else. It took me 10 years to get to this point but it's sooo much better. I still have disaster days once in a while but overall I think of this as the best job in the world.

My old coworker had one of them once, she came to me once a few months later and during the consultation I sat her down and told her *politely* and *respectfully* that I don’t think I’m gonna be able to give her the color she wants, and sent her on her way. ✌🏽

Yes yes YESS! Thank you! I’ve divorced these clients. Been doing hair long enough (26y) that if 3 visits and they are never happy, it’s time for the “I think it’s time for you to try a new stylist that may be able to do what you are saying”. Tip I’ve been using last few years, on top of pics you like. I want a pic of what they do not like.

I did hair for 6 years and specialized in blonding/color corrections and Vivid color… and lemme tell you.. your video gave me such PTSD lmaooo this is exactly why I quit the hair world too. Literally. Too many of these people exist and it’s disgusting. I used to cry over toner and not be able to eat because I’d be doing 8-10 hour sessions and literally would be so drained and depressed from trying to make others happy. I have very few and far between clients that treated me well and to this day I thank them for being such angels in comparison to the vast majority of the heads I’ve worked on… a lot of people just want good work with a discounted price or for free by claiming they don’t like it or it’s not like the photo etc.. just like u I educated at clients and I loved it but I also dealt with clients that never wanted to buy home haircair or would get upset when I would let them know that my services do require high maintenance and I will need to see them at least once a month to keep up and avoid a lot of new growth and banding and they always never wanna come in that often or pay the price tag… my favorite thing to tell them was “when you get your nails done, you don’t go in and get a full set and never come back to get them filled right? It’s the same thing your toner will fade and you will need to see me for your roots and toner every 3-4 weeks” they always made a funky face because they literally assume it’s a one and done process which very rarely is that ever the case.

I worked in a hair salon for a bit as a receptionist and the way people get nasty and complain is insane. Especially when the hairstylist did a great job. Your work looks great to me. 💙🌷 also I’ve noticed that people driving luxury cars and wearing expensive hand bags are a little out of touch with reality. Sadly the people who tip well and appreciate good work and don’t haggle the price are regular people working 9-5’s or struggling. It’s really wild but I think we appreciate and understand the value of someone work more than someone who is wealthy.

I am so happy that I did because I changed my profession and I am so much happier and my mental health is so much better. I struggled with anxiety and It got so much worse because of clients like this. Just like you I take pride in my work. I always explained everything and I am a perfectionist but where I live there are a lot of people that will go from salon to salon and no matter how good of a job you do they will demand a refund so that they can get it for free. Unfortunately, the owners didn't know a thing about cosmetology and would always protect the clients and would criticise us even If we tried to explain. Even worse cosmetologists in my country are so underpaid that a lot of them leave the country.

I’ve bleached my hair several times, going from dark to white blonde and then back to dark and back to white blonde. I’ve always trusted the people who did my hair. However, there was one time (my first time going to white blonde) when the masters at the salon were clearly lying to me. From the very beginning I’ve told the girl that I wanted very bright blonde hair and taking in consideration the fact that my natural hair colour was strawberry blonde I knew that the colour that I wanted could of been reached in 2 or maximum of 3 sessions. However, instead of bleaching all of my hair the master kept doing highlights for me so in order for me to reach the colour that I wanted I had to attend at least 10 appointments. Obviously, I realised that something was not right after the 4th appointment and went to another salon, where I got a perfect result in one session. I’m really not a picky client, but in my opinion what the first master did wasn’t right as she just wanted to get as much money from me as possible. After that I never had any issues with colouring my hair at a salon. The main thing is to be able to communicate and trust the process . However,as long as there are masters such as the first one that I got , there will be clients with trust issues

Just some tips from another stylist.
When someone wants white platinum hair
ALWAYS insist on them coming in for a Malibu Crystal gel treatment and a strand test prior to their appointment NO EXCEPTIONS. This alone weeds out crazy people from the get go. Her before pic she sent you, the first thing that I thought when I saw it was Why is her hair so brassy at the ends? Build up or that's just how her hair lifts. Some people have more natural Pheomelanin in their hair than others and will not lift easily. Great job on her hair! Malibu and strand test/ consultation on a day prior weeds out them weirdos🤣

Like, they're rich so they can easily pay and tip but instead are just very stingy. I'm sorry you had to go through that. The way you style hair looks amazing. Great video!
