I’m envisioning a woman going through some sort of midlife crisis who decides a new look is exactly what will make her feel better, books the first online consultation appointment she can find, and shows up expecting you to fix everything.

As a mental health therapist, I can totally relate to your quote, 'some people just don't know what the hell they want.' Yep, exactly. It is these types of clients who will continue to be disappointed unless they do the work to figure out what they DO want. It is on them.

    • @lilcrabbybabby

Sometimes people definitely do that. I had a person in particular that came in for the first time and got a very light highlight and had a naturally dark base. About 3 weeks later she sent me some photos of her part line where she claimed she was seeing dark that I didn't highlight (highlights aren't an all over lightening process anyway so I wasn't quite sure what she mean since there should have been dark pieces). I realized she was referencing her natural REGROWTH. She wanted another appointment in "a week or so" to "fix" the color I "messed up". That would make it 4 weeks time since the first color, which is often when people get their hair done on a regular schedule, anyway. To this day I believe she knew what she was doing. She was trying to a get a free service, 100%. When she came in I clarified that we were just highlighting her outgrowth, I even convinced her to get a base bump and "lowlight" so she wouldn't see as much of the dark because I was genuinely trying to fix the problem she claimed she had. She never came back again, so I suspected she's a chair hopper that just does that kind of thing every few months. I think I charged her for the color, but not the highlight, even though I suspected she was trying to get a free service I was just glad she left happy enough and didn't come back

The first time I went to my stylist, I had no idea what I wanted. My hair stylist wouldn’t even end the consultation until we BOTH knew what I wanted 😂. It lasted about an hour. She literally told me” look you’re spending a lot of money and I don’t want you telling me you hate your hair after your done, I want to know exactly what you want”. I think being straight up like that is super helpful when it comes to clients who don’t really know what they are looking for. It was the first time she had done my hair so I know she was a bit nervous when I came in not knowing what I wanted. But I ended up loving my hair!
Sorry you had that experience , some people are just difficult😢

As a hairstylist, I can get a bit flustered when a client doesn't know what they want. Its too broad/vague. I wish I had an hour free to do super in depth consultations like that

Same!!! Some don’t even ask if I have a inspo pic, I have to bring it up to them😩 my regular stylist does a great job and asks all the right questions, asks about inspo pics etc.. I’m one of those indecisive people but I always have a few ideas that i can’t decide on and she helps me choose what she thinks would be best too because I like low maintenance but she’s always booked up so it’s hard to get in if I don’t book like a month ahead.
Which is a good thing because that means she’s good lol bad part is I have to cheat sometimes and get my hair done with another stylist if I really need it done asap and the other ones never ask me anything and I’m never fully happy with it when I have to go somewhere else🥲

also my own personal horror story: someone told me they were a hair stylist and could balayage my hair at home for me and I had never dyed my hair before so I was like ok cool! Anyways she bleached it from root to tip with Sally’s beauty bleach and turns out she wasn’t a hair stylist. She was just a front desk girl and I was a naive and freshly out of high school. Do think it would be worthwhile to have clients sign off on your consult questions and answers, pre-service? Even printing off the instagram photo with that consult document might be helpful. This way if you provided what they wanted but in the end they did not like it on them, they would then be required to pay to have it adjusted.
For example: if a painter paints your walls a colour you chose but you end up not liking the colour in the end, it’s not the painter’s fault.
You can also add a check box to the document that says I trust the hairstylist and their judgement of what they believe will suit me. In this case, they give up their right to complain and get a discounted or free service.

I stopped doing certain services because the clients that often booked them never seemed to be happy. Nails we're always one of those. I loved doing nails and I do my own nails, friends and family, but nail clients are SUPER picky (which is okay imo) but I always felt like they wanted things I couldn't give them, no matter how hard I tried. I realize now some of that came from Instagram where they'll see $150-200 sets and think they're going to get that kind of service for $50. I didn't have the kind of skill set to do $200 nails which is why I wasn't charging that much. I decided to just stick to mostly wedding clients since that's what I love

I had a client who brought in her 1yr old son and I could tell she was super attentive to him but I was able to work around it and it went smoothly! Granted she only had 1 kid, 3 is a lot more to handle! But I definitely don’t mind kids so it seemed like no problem to me, but other stylist afterwards came up to me asking if I was annoyed by it. It could look like a poisonous yellow mohawk crosses with a perm, crossed with a bowl cut, and somewhat wide-eyed and in a shrill voice, I'd be exclaiming about how happy I am with it. While it isn't a universal trait of English people by a very long way, it's surprisingly common.

After 10 years I've finally learned: if I have a good regular client that I've been doing their hair for 5+ years and they come in and say "oh just do whatever, just something different" I know them and I know their style, it's a good time. If it's a new client that I don't know and they seem stressed or unhappy or they have something going on (grieving a loss especially, or a breakup or any kind of life change) and they don't know what they want and just say they want something "different"? BIGGEST RED FLAG. They're going through something and they think changing their hair will make them feel better. So there's no actual defined goal that you can possibly reach through hair. (And I have a special needs child, I fully understand the stress that comes with having a rowdy kid, so I see both sides of the issue)

What would you do in a situation where there’s a language barrier? I had a client once that was Vietnamese and she wanted like white blond hair and I tried to explain to her I wouldn’t be able to get it that light in one appointment and of course at the end she was unhappy and kept saying it didn’t look like the picture.

That’s a really tough one. I only had one client who’s English wasn’t that strong, but luckily her daughter was able to translate. But in normal situations where there’s a language barrier, I use Google translate. It can be tricky, because obviously the translation isn’t always going to be 100% accurate and they still might not understand what you’re trying to say when it comes to hair terms… hmmm.. maybe in that situation, I would have showed her a photo of a more realistic expectation and then tried communicating that it would take more appointments to get the white she wanted ?

You might be a type of olive if you’re very confused because it’s got a green undertone to it which can look off in gold and silver. There can be warm and cool olive so that’s another thing to check. Once olive tones find their colours though they look great ^^

I don’t understand how people can just go to get their hair Appointment and not know what they want ! and also like that client you’re talking about first of all I would had a sitter for my kid because I need to be focused. I need to be able to talk to my hairstyles about exactly what I want how I want her to do it how much it cost all that stuff so I feel like she should’ve had a babysitter I mean I know it’s hard to find babysitters and it’s expensive, but you kinda need your full attention, especially in those kind of appointments you know what I mean so it’s her fault I feel and also she really didn’t give you any idea what she wanted and then you do her hair and then she doesn’t like it. It doesn’t make any sense I feel you did your best for the information you were given❤

Maybe for straight hair. My grandma took me to a cosmetology school for a haircut at a discount when I was seven and my curls never grew the same way. My first born son had spiral curls just like mine until his dad’s mom took a pair of regular scissors to cut his bangs short and now the rest of his hair curls the same but the front refuses to curl to this day and that was six years ago. Just the front. Where she cut. “Whelp” doesn’t fix that but hey everyone experiences life differently.

@@margaretvargus2399 so you need to style it… it sounds like it was clumped into the rest and curled because of that and now because it was cut it isn’t clumped that way anymore.
I also have curly hair and have shaved my head multiple times I have manipulated my hair in so many ways and I can still style my hair as I like. Because I learned how.
      Maybe cut the snark 😂

@@margaretvargus2399 How can cutting the ends of hair change how it grow from the scalp? It’s not like scissors can change the shape of the follicle itself. Isn’t that what determines how curly/straight someone’s hair is?

@@Thurston86 if you had to ask me then you’re no scientist either 😂 bruh I didn’t go get no phd in hair follicles my friend but I am not alone on this planet with this experience. There’s a reason hair stylists charge more depending on experience because bad hair cuts are a real thing buddy. My hair never turned into a completely different texture or changed colors it just never grew back the same and neither did my son’s. We still have curly hair bro it just don’t curl the same no more 😂 some of us get dealt an unlucky card bro don’t try and be rude and talk down to someone just because you think you’ve seen and know it all. Try to be more understanding to complete strangers whom you have no idea what could be going on in their life and the last thing they wanna hear is some troll being facetious. Do better brother cuz this ain’t it.

I honestly wish you were my hair stylist after watching this video because rarely has the hair stylist I went to asked that many important questions before starting on the hair. I am a person who is very specific about my roots looking brighter and every time I try to explain what I want and of course show inspo pics, I feel like it never goes well and the hair stylist uses terms like dimension and half the time idk what it means like I need you to simply put it to me 😆 also my last hair stylist had myself and another client at the same time and I just did not understand that so the struggle is very real.

I always get mixed feelings about this. I’m someone who pays pretty good money to get my hair done often and I wouldn’t say I’m super picky, but if I’m spending a couple hundred to get my hair colored or processed and it’s not exactly the way I have had it in the past, I am definitely going to speak up and have it corrected. Especially when I do consultations before to make sure my stylist (I go to one specifically in my area :) ) knows exactly what I want and how I want it. Thankfully I don’t have the issue in this video very often because I go to the same stylist now, but I remember when I was looking for a stylist that I trusted, it’s intimidating the first time you going to get your hair done with someone new.

Every hairstylist even some of the most world renowned hairdressers have had a story like this. I always pulled pictures and swatches so the client and I were on the exact same page if they change their mind after that that’s on them. Of course you want to do your best to please your client but if they change their mind after you’re done they have to pay for that. And of course if somebody’s giving me zero feedback not answering any of my questions I wouldn’t touch their hair because that’s a disaster waiting to happen.
