    My 20yrs of being a stylish/colorist . I can definitely say I’ve experienced working with horrible assistants. It’s the WORST! Some people don’t have any work ethic. The worst is when the salon owner allows this type of behavior. At least yours got fired.

      That’s super important! Every single person who comes in the door must be greeted! It makes a huge difference. They feel welcomed and it just shows them the salon atmosphere!

    I just went from full time assistant to be given a chair at a super laid back, chill salon that wasn’t looking for an assistant. I’m a “later in life” stylist (licensed at 26) so maybe this is why I just can’t understand this girls behavior. Most of the stylists never had assistants and didn’t know how to utilize me, others knew because they’ve had some before or have been assistants in the past. But I wore (and still do) all different types of hats in the salon. The main receptionist left, so I took on that role while assisting. I’ve been the salons maid, appliance repair person, plumber, everything you can think of I’ve done for the salon. Even though it’s rather small, I barely have enough time to be on my phone because I’m always doing SOMETHING. And do you know what that got me? Being offered a raise, a chair, AND they said they’d pay for my extra education. Also- one of the owners paid a deposit to be a vendor at an EDM festival not too far from the city. She could bring 3 other stylists. But I was the first one she asked to join her. Even though I don’t know how to install dreadlocks, pinchbraids, and I’m not the best braider ever, she still chose me because she knew I’d work hard to learn those things by July.
    So the moral of my story: if you are an assistant to a really cool salon that doesn’t really care about most things, don’t take advantage of that and instead learn and do everything you can to make yourself look good because SALONS WILL INVEST IN YOU IF YOU SEEM LIKE A WORTHY INVESTMENT

    My husband's work had someone like that. Always coming late, always calling in sick, leaving early, did a couple of no call no shows, and got caught drunk driving, and proceeded to get a warrant for his arrest because he didn't even show up for his court hearing related to the drunk driving. I THINK they are finally getting around to firing this dipstick. People like that drive me crazy. And they never change, they are like that their whole life.

    Im currently an assistant at a salon I’ve been working at for 2 months now and I still have never received any free services because I care about my reputation & I believe that I need to fully demonstrate my strong work ethic before reaping the glamorous benefits of working at a salon! When you’re an assistant, that is the prime time to show what you’ve got and your passion for this field. When nurses are first starting out, they often times have to do the dirty work and clean eery bodily fluids and handle rather aggressive patients. They are given long night shifts before they can select their desired hours because you have to WORK your way to the top. In this time of being an assistant, I have realized that it is a necessary process to go through the “dirty work”, and if you really love this career you should be learning like a sponge absorbing new knowledge every day about not only hair but also the business & social side of it all as well.

    Jesus you weren’t kidding about the WORST assistant! Sadly I’ve experienced this as well, but I was a receptionist at a couple different salons for years and I worked with these type of girls that just have absolutely no work ethic! Imagine all this, but she would come into work REEKING of weed, late all the time with a cup of Starbucks, and always trying to leave early. Horrible. Unfortunately it generally is the Gen Z kids that are like this. They hate their jobs and then they disappear when it’s too much work, not even giving notice anymore. Or they just get fired for not meeting expectations. It really is crazy that SHE sought out of the job and ended up being this bad!!

    people like that think their behavior is cute or charming when in reality it's just frustrating and eventually no one's going to want you around. no one wants to work with someone who just sits around and acts like they or their personality is so amazing it's worth not doing their part 🙄 she sounds like her parents told her she had to get a job or they'd cut her off and she figured beauty school would be an easy option to make money doing nothing and get free services.

Honestly I feel your manager should of like said leave phones in break room in your bag or leave in your car or something and not out on floor in salon. Also I completely understand greeting the guest/ customer is definitely the most important thing! Haven't worked in a salon but have worked retail and know this!

  • @rochellemurrell4146
    @rochellemurrell4146 Год назад +3

    I hate to generalize but I would say work ethic in the younger generation is an issue. They seem to think they should just be able to show up and somehow be granted all the privileges. I work in healthcare and we would have assistants (typically younger, college age people who were allegedly interested in working in the field one day) come to interviews sitting all the way back in the chairs super relaxed and not terribly engaged and all they wanted to talk about was how much leave they would accrue and what the pay was. Granted these things are important but you are trying to work with sick people and at some point going to need a recommendation for grad school so let’s try and at least try to act like you care about the job. Then of course you are constantly on them about the phones 🙄. It’s like they have zero concept of what professionalism looks like. After almost 20 years in the profession I have realized I’m just getting too old and maybe it’s a generational gap issue. It’s definitely very frustrating.

As a cosmetology student myself (going on a few years, moved states, had to take a break) I have been struggling to find someone who wants a student assistant wheather because they legally can't pay a student to work in that capacity in our state or they don't see the need to hire a student. I would love to one day find a salon who's truly willing to take me under their wing & show me as much as they can about salon life! It's tough to hear of people who don't care getting great opportunities that they throw away when I'm so willing to work & my time hasn't come yet.
