This guy couldn't put 1+1 together and figure out the summons have a leash range to him. SO if he just stayed closer to the boss the summon wouldn't spending so much time trying to stay withon range of him. It's not like he was fighting the boss himself, so the mental stack of dodging one stray hit aimed at him wouldn't be very high at all.
