I think the reason they have those 'oil company' branded versions of the Purolator premium filters is for those quick lube type places or service stations (if there's any of those left). I saw that Pennzoil filter and thought it looked pretty nice and a Quaker State version, and another STP filter. You can probably find them at retail locations but I haven't found them to be very prolific. I was just at Walmart last week and saw a regular Motorcaft FL1A selling for $9.99. Crazy! I used to buy that same filter there little more than a year or 2 ago for $3.97 for regular changes because it was such a good deal. Not anymore.

Before Fred’s Department Stores closed they carried a full line of Havoline branded oil filters. They were just rebranded Purolators but my applications could be had for $3 all day long. I cut dozens of them open after running them 5K miles and never saw an issue with any of them. Metal end caps, plain rubber ADBV . I ran them on my Corolla with 350K miles on it and changed them every 5K miles. Folks who are going to change their oil regardless of the condition of it @ 5K miles could save themselves a substantial amount of money by avoiding high end synthetic oils and filters. It’s money to put in the gas tank or other needs. Of course people are obliged to spend their money however they want.

Hey Whip, thanks for doing the comparison I suggested on the HPZ-173 video. 👍 I said there "Excepting can color, I'll bet they look almost identical." Seems correct. And, I'm going to speculate that even though the HPZ box efficiency (lower) not the same as PL/P1, they are both the same. Same media. I'll bet that with the exception of the nitrile sealing gasket, the equivalent Bosch Prem. (3502?) is also very similar if not identical too. All made by Purolator, same factory. I'm finding the Bosch Prem, for much less and the PTFE coated gasket not worth the difference. Great comparison, excellent vid as usual. 👍

I doubt the gaskets are PTFE. PTFE (Teflon) tends to be rigid and lack memory. If I were to guess, I would think most gaskets are made from Viton or Buna n. One black and the other that brown/red color. Pliable, with memory and very much petroleum compliant.

They may LOOK the same, but they AIN'T the same -- because 30 is 150% of 20, and a 30-Micron rating is UN-acceptible .
It's hard to believe that anyone could claim that "they're the same", when there is such a HUGE discrepency between Micron Ratings.
The go-to standard for Micron Ratings is "ISO- 4548-12 @ 20 Microns".
If those filters ARE the same, SOMBODY is lying about their Micron Ratings !!
    Base Plates are identical.
    PTFE is generic TEFLON.
Those random digits on the cannister DO NOT tell us when the filters were made.
The Motorcraft FL-820-S usses the same base plate as the 2 filters shown here.
I'm wondering who makes the MEDIA MATERIAL for these oil filters -- The BOSCH Premium oil filters used to feature their FILTECH media, which was excellent at 99% at 20 Microns -- but it doesn't say "Filtech" on the boxes any more. Still 99% at 20 Microns, though !!

      Hi Chuck,
I think they are the same, you can believe what you want but the filter media looks the same to the naked eye, feels the same, and even looks the same under a microscope.
This is why I don't totally believe in the micron ratings that they give us.

    • @SlikLizrd
      @SlikLizrd 2 года назад

@@WhipCityWrencher Yes, I know they look and feel the same, Whip, and I don't dispute that OR the microscopic analysis.
The elephant in the room is the huge difference in published Micron Ratings - because 20 does not equal 30, so if there is 2 different micron ratings for materials that are identical in every respect, then SOMEBODY is lying to us -- and it's NOT YOU !!
I would like to know how many different MEDIA MANUFACTURERS there are, and who their clients are.
I understand that Bosch owns Filtech, but I don't see "Filtech" on the Bosch Premium boxes anymore.
I would like to see the specs on the AMSOIL filtering media compared to the FRAM Ultra.
