I recently used the ST9688 on my 2022 Kia with a 1.6L Turbo. I have somewhat of a strange question in that this is the first oil change from factory fill and when cleaning up my catch pan I found a black plastic washer that has the same size, shape and outside diameter nub features as a rubber garden hose seal. I wish that I could attach photos to provide a better description. In looking at the contact markings it appears that it may have been installed between the base of the original filter and the engine over the oil return pipe.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I have done many searches including Kia forums and have not found any information. Thanks for any assistance.

It is interesting that Walmart oil changes would use the FRAM Core over their house brand filter. I would have to guess that the FRAM costs less for Walmart than their own filter. You would think with the supposedly voluminous information on the FRAM website! that they would mention that filter model. Maybe it is a filter meant for commercial applications and is not sold directly to the public or is specifically created for oil change places at a low price point.

I think Champ (Supertech) used to be the house brand filter for Kmart when Purolator reigned as the most popular name brand on their shelves. When Walmart became the new Kmart they axed Purolator and made Fram the name brand leader. It looks like Champ is once again the main source for the house brand. Never been a Fram fan, gimmicky paint jobs and usually less content on the inside where it counts at least on the basic filter. For a go to house brand one could do worse than Supertech, just don’t like the 30 micron rating vs say Purolator red can (Tractor Supply, etc.) that still rates 97% efficient at 20 microns, albeit at nearly twice the price. A good filter is always cheaper than a new engine!

    • @vincemajestyk9497
      @vincemajestyk9497 Год назад

Walmart USED to sell the Purolator 'Classic White' until recently. I used to get them there for around $4 then switched to the Motorcraft FL1A. I've never been a huge fan of Fram either. They have sooo many different filter ranges with weird miniscule manufacturing spec changes. Why? Seems like it would be cheaper to consolidate all the best features. There's not one Fram filter with ALL of the good features that can compete will other similar filters in the same price. The only 2 Fram filters I would consider are the Ultra and the Titanium, but the Boss is a much better filter, a little less expensive than the Titanium. I'm not even sure the Ultra (and Titanium) use a 100% synthetic media. The data sheet says 'Blend' but that could be a wordplay. You can SEE the Boss is 100% synthetic.

As a service tech I hated using those Fram COR filters. We would crush filters at the end of the day and you could put 4 Fram filters in the device and get them all to easily crush, where as something like a Wix we could barely get 2 and it wouldn't crush it all the way. I've also had a few cases of their filters come in damaged or the wrong thread pitch, absolute junk filters and the customer will easily run way over their 5k max filter protection claim.

Interesting comparison Whip. It's true the Fram Core filter is what is used in the Walmart TLE/ACC for oil changes. They are not intended for retail sale but have managed to show up for sale on ebay. On the Champ Labs made 9688 like ST, I like how they extend the gasket to the outer edge. The Fram 9688 uses the more common narrow sealing gasket. In areas using salt and sand, I've seen the groove between gasket and edge become a rust area. I would pay $2.50 more to get the ST9688 in the MP series filter with silicone adbv. Thanks for vid.

That specific Fram oil filter is sold only to Walmart oil change customers. You can't buy it off the shelf, that's why you can't find any specs for it on the web. Somebody probably stole it from Walmart, and put it up for sale on Ebay. The Fram filter might be slightly more eco-friendly than the Supertech, because it doesn't have that plastic cage inside - making it a little easier to recycle. The Fram filter will work fine, but keep in mind Walmart only guarantees their oil changes for 3,000 miles.

I've gotten too old to do my own oil changes like I used to, so I have been having them done at Walmart for the last few years. Fram is the standard Walmart uses but I always request the Supertech oil filter (which they may charge a little more for) as I consider it far superior to Fram. I consider the oil filter brand more critical than the oil brand used because all motor oil sold it the U.S. has to meet certain API standards and requirements. The same is not true for filters. IMO, Fram is the worst name brand oil filter.

Another great review, Whip -- thank you !!
I would not buy EITHER ONE of these oil filters, but for different reasons:
Supertech gasket is too big -- wastes rubber.
Supertech ADBV (Nitrile) -- not suitable for claimed 10,000-miles OCI.
Fram COR - Lacks Fram's famous "Sure-Grip" coating.
Fram COR - Too-Small filtering area, poor pleat spacing.
Both filters have too high of a Micron Rating -- 25 Microns is my preferred upper limit.
If I HAD TO buy ONE of these, it would be the Supertech - More threads, more pleats, more and bigger holes in the base plate, MUCH better Microscopic view, Polymer core.
Your exclusive "Microscope View" shows the much more uniform media of the SuperTech. 🔬
    Keep 'em coming !!

Nothing against M1 filters but there are still some fine quality filters for half the price of a M1. As an old technician I’ve watched customers over the years spend mega bucks on super expensive synthetic oils and filters only to dump it at ridiculously short intervals. I’ve also had other customers who use a good mid-range filter like Hengst, Denso, Full, Toyo Roki and run a decent conventional or semi-synthetic oil at the same intervals as my customers who are dumping super expensive synthetic oils and the last customers mentioned are coming out way ahead financially. When we pull their engines down for regular maintenance like seals and gaskets their all clean and sludge free inside. The second group of customers just spent a whole lot less getting there.
My postman was a loyal customer of mine until he retired. He was a rural route carrier and if there’s any service more extreme on engines and fluids that a mail route carrier I don’t know what it is. His 97 Tacoma 2.4 never saw anything but conventional oil @ 5K mile intervals. He ran a Denso aftermarket filter or an occasional O.E. Yoda Denso when they were on sale. When he retired the truck had just under 500K miles on it. He sold it to another route carrier and it’s still delivering the mail six days a week. I never even had to put a timing chain in the thing.
I’m not opposed to synthetics and I run them in most of my equipment but there’s a lot of consumers spending huge amounts of money for “the best “ synthetics and filters and are getting a net zero return on investment for the expense.
