I've watched a few breakdowns and reviews of the supertech filter due to a concern about the low price. The gasket not being captured tightly does not bother me at all. I clean the metal surface anyway so there is zero chance that I'd leave the old gasket on and find it hard to believe that's a concern for anyone with any common sense. I like the combination of more flow holes and the plastic cage as that is clearly less restrictive than other designs. I like the thinner outer shell as the thicker ones just create more waste.
Your points about the identical metal and caps and razor thin margins are valid.
I've used these filters and supertech full synthetic oil on my crv for 160,000 miles and have inspected the filters and found them to have no issues. Yes, they are cheap, but I think they are actually very good products and they've performed really well on my Honda.

I've taken several cars over 200,000 miles with nothing but Supertech oil, filters, gear oil, coolant and such...
I've used them since the name was Tech 2000 with no issues. The key is regular service intervals...
I agree and have had great DIY success with Supertech oils and coolant. Regular maintenance is the key. Currently have over 257,000 on Expedition and 284,000 on Taurus.
The key is several things, regular maintenance, oil from any decent mfg and carrying the latest API rating, which now would be "SN" or "SN+", and a reasonable time/distance limit. I don't care if the oil costs $12 qt and is pure liquid magic. It's not going beyond 7500 miles or 1 year in my engine. A half century of driving, being a muscle car enthusiast and a DIY'er tells me that is enough. And Supertech and Supertech filters will take you there if you don't start imagining yourself going very long/high mileage drain intervals.
Rob B The main key is I dont trust anyones advice or answer and unless you break down that engine, youll never know the damage youve done because an engine doesnt whine until something breaks.

Within certain limits, I understand and agree with your p.o.v. In the early '70's, the best oils available were API "SF" rated. Ford recommended change intervals of 6K miles. Quaker State Super Blend 10W-30 (SF) was on sale frequently (loss leader)for 35 cents a qt. and filters were typically $3, so a change was about $5. I started out with 3K change intervals and eventually settled on 2K intervals with my '71 Mustang
hotrod. In 1976, at 129K miles, I pulled the engine heads to replace the dried out, cracked and falling apart valve seals. While apart, I "miked" the valve stems and found them well inside of new production tolerances. Replacing the seals, the heads were in very good condition. Inside the cylinder bores in the block, where there should have been bore wear sufficient to leave a ridge at the bore tops, there was no ridge. That experience convinced me that a 2-3K change interval would lead to extremely long engine life. How long? Who knows? Certainly at least hundreds of thousands of miles. I drove that Mustang well into the 180K range before it was "totaled" from the rear around 1979/80. Never had an occasion to be back inside the engine. Oh, there was no sludge buildup inside that engine! Fast forward to today and a good number of API oil spec upgrades to, now, SN/SN+. No longer just conventional, we now have synthetic too. Been using synthetic in everything for 20 years, small
engines, cars, trucks, etc. My change intervals have grown longer. I will accept 7500 miles or 6 months but that is because my driving remains very little city, stop and go, almost no dirt road driving, little idling, etc. Since retirement, my driving is typically 6000-7000 miles annually, split between 2 vehicles, a 2003 Trailblazer (222K miles)& a 2013 Challenger R/T 5.7L/6 speed manual/3.73 limited slip differential (11K miles). The longest interval it has experienced was 1 year/3800 miles.
It's your vehicle, your money, your call, but unless you are trying to set a million mile record, you're wasting your money. At least consider 5000 miles, 5 months!

yes. i did this once when i was 15 and saw the leak. my friend did this at 35 and i was shocked. although at 18 i had a dodge truck come in and it had 3 stacked together on it and it did not leak. freak miracle.

Really? I had a professional shop have a gasket stick and they installed the new filter right over it. It pinched and leaked when at higher oil pressure, blowing all the oil out, eventually. The engine was ruined. (Ford Ecoboost). Fortunately, the shop took responsibility and their insurance covered a Ford factory remanufactured engine to the tune of around $11,000. Ouch. If I'd changed it myself, it would not have happened.

This isn't an apples-to-apples comparaison! The Mobil 1 filter you use was top of the line, NOT where this Super Tech is! As for the Fram, you used an entry-level model, on par with Super Tech line-wise, but an older, not current, design. Comparing high-end Mobil 1 to the low-end Fram is unfair, you should have compared with Fram Ultra Synthetic.

I have been using Super Tech oils and oil filters on all my vehicles since Walmart comes to life and I never had an failure as of today 2020. Works as intend at an affordable price.

If the gasket stays on your engine when you remove it that’s a person error not a filter error . You should always check to make sure the gasket came off

Wal-Mart oil and filtered a really good I worked at citgo petroleum bottling in Oklahoma city they bottled supertech,Harley davidson,Briggs and Stratton, mobil,and many house brands👌
If if they all come to the same place why even buy name brand. Just buy the Walmart brand and spend the savings on a nice filter...never understood why people are so attractive to brands like Mobile...they feel so offended when they hear Walmart oil is just as good as their mobile one but half the price.

I've used ST every now and then. I can say they are decent filters. I change my oil every 5k miles and haven't had any issues with them

I've prett much used exclusively Supertech and Fram extra guard filters the entire life of a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban and it's still running smooth since 1994. But That's considered the beater car, but I have to say, this Supertech oil filter is of high quality.
This exact ST filter was $1.95 at my Walmart. It's a no-brainer. I worked with modern plastics in my first career and they're extraordinary. One of the major reasons the wonder material Graphene has struggled from a cost/performance standpoint are modern plastics that evolve continually. They've become wonder materials themselves. I have ZERO issues with it being used in a filter or most anything else that inst entering my body. Cheap modern plastics can easily outdo modern metals in temperature & tensile/flextural strength. Almost certainly this is PTFE which in various forms has been used by your grandfather or great grandfather in many ways since before WW2.
SuperTech oil filters are manufactured by Champion who also makes STP and Mobil 1 oil filters. Champion Labs makes also makes OEM Motorcraft, OEM GM on some applications, AC, Valvoline, AutoZone oil filters. There are only a hand full of oil filter companies and each company makes several brands of oil filters.
People come to you for a review or ADVICE because they don’t have a clue for themselves and just because you don’t give them the answer straight forward and bluntly they begin to leave you negative comments for babbling too much or whatever. due to a thing called the magnuson-moss warranty act, your warranty must stay intact no matter what filter you use, if the auto manufacturer wants to blame your filter for a failure they would have to prove that it is the case. It is not legal for manufacturers to require you to use their house brand to maintain your warranty unless they supply the materials.

Yet they do that with ATF all the time and some even design the CVT so that only the dealership can easily service it. Nissans for example have a dip-stick tube but no dip-stick in it. They will not sell you a dip-stick and they will not sell one to your independent mechanic either. It's probably illegal but they are getting away with it so far.

Laws are only good if you can enforce them and unfortunately you average Americans doesn’t have the means to sue a dealership for voiding warranty. Companies know this which is why they don’t care and it’s usually cheaper for them to pay out fines than too actually follow the law
My philosophy is to change pile and filter quite often compared to people who spend more and trust they can go super long intravals....I just feel better spending less but changing more often....has worked very well for me so far....

Loose gasket shouldn't be a problem, if you're careful when you install it, it's not going anywhere after it's mounted.
I have used Supertech, Fram, STP over the years. If you change your oil and filter every 3 to 4.5 months all will work ok even basic Fram. However, I currently have a BOSCH premium filter in one car and that oil after yes 8 months is still very clear and clean. Bosch is more expensive however.
The famous 95 MERC runs Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, 5-W-20; Bosch Premium Oil Filter # 3410; and a FILTERMAG #SS365PR Magnet Lit. Oil & Filter changes at 5,000 miles.
The BOSCH # 3410 is reasonably priced. It's NOT cheap shit !!
The answer is, the $5-6 Fram filters you buy are really $1.50 oil filters with $4-5 markup. Supertech filters are sold near cost of manufacture. Cheap filters, cheap price. I prefer to spend $6-7 and get a filter that's actually worth $6-7: Bosch Premium.
YES !! The BOSCH Premium Oil Filter performs perfectly in the famous 95 MERC's V-8 engine -- I like the Silicone ADBV, the Spiral-wound Metal Core, the large media area, and, ESPECIALLY the 20-Micron rating.

did a double oring on a bus 20 plus all over the floor worst part besides cleaning it up is getting my balls broke all day haha
My dad did that once and it all ran down our driveway into the street, and of course the nosy ass grumpy old lady a few doors down had to call the cops (she called the police for the stupidest reasons every chance she got probably just so she had somebody to talk to, they eventually stopped taking her calls lol) The cop who showed up was a badge heavy prick and came like 20 minutes after it was all cleaned up, but there was no reasoning with that guy. Pops had to pay a pretty hefty fine after that...
Learned early-on to always put a thin film of fresh oil on the gasket. Never have had an issue...

Exact filter for my car, good to see this review. Gona get the filter and oil and change the oil for the 1st time on my 2012 optima.. Changed it all the time on my truck but my car is "new" and always took it to get done and then i am releasing my car is gona be 8 years old and its time to start DIYing it again like my truck.
These filters are great for the money. I would just follow the change intervals what the owners Manuel say. I do 3500 oil changes on my car and never had a problem.
Yes I stamp metal as a toolmaker , 30 years, that is a manufacturer engineered ID stamp, that identifies the Die that that plate came from so if there is a large rejection they can track down the mfg. Tooling it came from to pull it from production and make the appropriate repairs and revisions

On my second oil change with a supertech filter. Did my last oil change at around 3500 miles and the oil didnt even look that dark. Must've filtered pretty good.
I've used super tech oil and filters for years. I always get two filters and change the filter 2-3000 miles and get 5k off of one oil change and that's with their regular oil

From what I have found supertech is now being made by the folks that make ACDelco. When it comes down to it, it is made by a company that makes oil filters already for another label and it doesn't have paper endcap on it so I'm ok with it

If you live in northern cold climates, and start your vehicle in the cold, i have noticed the plastic support tube can fail and i typically stay away from them. They can break in extreme cold temperatures when the oil is thick and the plastic is brittle, allowing the filter to collapse, and the plastic pieces to enter the oil galleries. The cheap frams are no better the filter media tears off the cardboard end caps. I have been using wix filters for years, mostly the xp version. I have however came across 2 separate instances in our recent -40c cold snap where the wix xp filters appeared to have leaked at the case seem. This has motivated me to revisit my filter of choice and even consider the fram ultra synthetic. Until i find a quality replacement within my budget it will however still be xp's for me, for now.

@@SlikLizrd We did experience a string of broken oil filter cartriges in both mercedes and gm ecotec engines due to the collapse of the center support of the filter, this was a few years ago now. The failures always seemed to follow heavy cold during the winter, and it was a pain to have to pick all the plastic out of the oil feed from the filter housings when the filters really broke up badly. Had some long term engine failures as well, which no one could prove but i figure it had to do with the crappy platistic center support oil filters failing so badly. Eventually so much fuss was made about it we switched from the cheapo napa filter line to whatever was a more premium and available filter, sometimes we even ordered oem to avoid the problem. I dont recall having much trouble after that. I could not say exactly what the core material was/is made of i aint no smancy enginenerd, however if i had to guess some kind of cheap thermoplastic, maybe PP or PBT. Early examples apeared to not have any GF re-enforcement in them, they were just cheap thermoplastic which really didnt do well with all the thermocycling and heavy load from engine oil pressure bearing down on the filter media. The later and higher end filters that still had plastic cores Did/do appear to be some kind PA6 or other nylon with glass fiber re-enforcement as you could see the swirls in the plastic. Personally after seeing all the ones i saw broken however, i just stay away from any plastic cored filters and go with metal whenever possible.

SuperTech oil filters are made in the USA by Champion Labs. They are manufactured in six different states through the collaboration of Wix and Walmart.
I have no doubt that for any ordinary driving, the Walmart filter is just fine.
Luckily all the oil filters you have fit my Honda Civic and I actually love this current Supertech oil filter. It's cheap and I do relatively short oil change intervals and I would imagine this has good flow. I am going to stock up on these Supertech oil filters.

My 2002 dodge ram has 256'000 miles on the odometer. I have run super tech oil and filters since it's first oil change. It still runs as goid today as when i bought it new. I change my oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles. Good enough for me.
I've heard from several sources that Wix makes ST filters. I've never had a problem with them. I did with Fram, back in the old days.
FRAM is the worst filter to buy ..WIX filter are better I worked for a auto parts warehouse for 17 years and we had no trouble cone back on the filters

With full synthetic motor oil you can go up to at least7000 miles now the oil filter it all depends upon what you get which brand the fram ultra is a good won the STP maximum life is good the super tech one is not bad the mobile one is good the Purolator boss is good

I use Super Tech full synthetic oil and next oil change I'm using Super Tech oil filter. I do change ours every 5,000 miles.

I'm lucky if I do 3000 in 6 months as I dont drive much other than to work and Home Depot/Grocery Store. My trucks maintenance in the manual says 5000 between changes but gets changed WAY more often than that.
Just a data point from someone who knows, this model of supertech filter is made by champion filters. They had a drop in quality when Walmart changed oil filter manufacturers back in early 2018
Don't care if it was a Louis Vuitton oil filter, you always check that the gasket came off with the filter. Another thing is you are comparing a top line extended performance filter to a regular filter. Why not use a regular mobile 1 filter

There have been reports lately of Mobile one getting sloppy with their glue inside the filter media area and also some reports of sticking bypass springs/valves that are causing cold starts to be oil deprived I’ve stopped using them after I read the report.
Hi well I jusy used 1 on a jeep 4.0 and the filter was defective had a small cut on side due to the pressing of the top then painted so couldn't see put on filled jeep with synthetic primed mtr and pulled out to change oil in Durango just to see a trail of fluid pulled off went to Walmart showed manager he gave me a replacement and a quart of syn Castrol .. 1st filter to do that in my 35yrs of owning rides ...
I've come to the conclusion that cutting open filters doesn't add a ton in evaluating performance or reliability. You need to perform actual tests with oil and stress tests like a lab or manufacturer would.
That would require time, effort and money. Hacksaw and a GoPro seem to satisfy most on YT...

Ac delco filters have the plastic center tube. Over the years you can tell ac delco went from high quality tap to stamped out cheap taps.
Walmart super tech filters are basically a slightly reworked Wixx,,, Walmart had a deal with Wixx for a little while to make super tech filters however Walmart was studying them when they learned all they could know about making oil filters they struck out on their own with champion laboratories and that’s the Supertek filter you’re getting today from Walmart,,, if they were bad filters they wouldn’t be selling them anymore because they sell millions and millions of those filters a lot of people use them and I’m one of them I’ve never had a problem with one,,,I also use their OW 20 synthetic oil and some of their Dino oil conventional including two-stroke and 10w30 and 5w30 and Straight 30 never had any trouble with the house brands at Walmart,,, i’ve also used their equivalent to WD 40 and brake parts cleaner and carburetor cleaner and brake fluid and antifreeze and transmission and power steering fluid‘s gear oil‘s grease never one single problem and the price is always right

@9:00 that's a E Core ,it's technically a GM designed part that's used in Delco filters, & used in many other filters including SuperTech that are built by Champ Labs
Get my oil changes at wall mart ... at my local store , they charge the same for synthetic - regardless of brand ! so I just go with with Mobil 1.

I've used Walmart oil brand just a little more than 8 years now. Never had any motor failure and that is including my 2005 STI, 86 Caprice V8, 2013 Impala, 2004 MDX with over 150k, 92 celica and 2012 Kia soul. Guess what filter brand I use??? I trust the Walmart filter over fram. I had chunks of paper once in my Caprice and that did it for me!!! I used Mobile and Delco filters but than moved to Supertech, cheaper and it simply works!

I would use the Fram Synthetic or a Wix
I just read that Wal-Mart bought Wix manufacturing facility to make the Super Tech filters. That doesn't make it a Wix by any means, but it's still better than a Fram. I personally prefer Purolator Plus filters, but will use a Wix or NAPA Gold as well.
Filter on the inside for the price, looks like the best of em. Media looks like it has more than the fram and it looks nice and uniform compared to fram.
The supertechs I've bought this year have steel cores. 4967 and 6607 I believe.

That center tube (we call them cores) is strong enough I can tell you that. I make these filters and may have actually made that element (part with the paper and plastic tube) although I don't think so. The inkblot is in the wrong place. If I stand on a metal core laid on its side it will crush. The same with the plastic core (we call them cores not center tubes). I weigh 175 pounds and can stand on the plastic core if it is standing upright and it will not crush. I do not know how much it will actually hold but it is above 2oo pounds. The caps are identical and are fed from the same hopper. The paper, core and endcaps are bonded together with a hotmelt glue and it is very very strong.

It LOOKS LIKE a fiberglas-filled plastic, such as Nylon.
So, the Walmart filter flows better than a Mobile 1. It has steel ends and cost less than 3 bucks. What a deal!
I just bought a mobil1 and it looks identical to the supertech filter on the outside.
I like the plastic center tube.

I've preferred Purolator Pure One filters for a long time. Before that I used Bosch Premium filters. (Menard's). But I don't travel to a town with a Menard's all that often anymore so I was searching for something else as reasonably priced that's basically as good and more readily available. (I used to use Napa Gold 1036 and that's basically a relabeled WIX at a cheaper price.) The only thing I really make sure of is there a silicone ADBV... whether it's a leaf spring or a coil spring... I've had very few engine's that it seemed to matter (Ford 4.6). The bypass isn't really a big deal for me because I know when I serviced it last and when it's going to be serviced again. You need to know about bypass if you don't service on some kind of routine basis. But nitrile doesn't like extreme temperatures. It's fine for March through May here and MAYBE October through November here. Unless you're buying an oil with a SM rating it's not just conventional. It's mixed. And it's probably good enough for a modern engine not seeing excessive idle time about 5000 miles. If you're using a name brand oil and 90% highway or more and changing at 3000 miles you're just throwing away good oil. (If you're still driving something with a carburetor then changing at 3000 is still reasonable.) If it's a diesel engine follow that maintenance schedule. If it didn't come with a manual it's darn easy to come by that information in this day and age with the internet. How many pleats.. irrelevant. What is the density of the material? Is a large thread count per inch shirt warmer than a smaller thread count? Metal or plastic designed for hot oil, irrelevant again if you do maintenance. Fiber board end cap versus metal, irrelevant if you do maintenance. Do you really really really think Honeywell would design a filter for the majority of the population that will fail almost immediately or within a reasonable amount of time? Do you think Trico would risk millions of dollars over $.09? C'mon... most of the stuff people think is relevant has been developed and tweaked by marketers trying to put the competition out of business.
Quite good overall. You just put the gasket upside down when you put it back on the filter. The only problem with this is that looks like it has beveled surface, which it does not.
That why you always check for the gasket
SUPER TECH is made by Champion, as is KN and some parts store house brands.
Champion also makes airplane filters with a hex top and safety wings.

I used to buy these Supertech filters for my 2000 Explorer, up until I bought one and it was the new design and extremely small compared to the Motorcraft for $1 more. I wasn't impressed and returned it immediately, considering the Motorcraft is smaller than it was 15 years ago.
I can aprove I’ve been using fram and supertech oil filters on my 2000 civic ex for a while n I’ve had no problems till this day 👍🏼 I prefer supertech because I love a little challenge in taking the filter off since it has no grip , but I switch it up to fram whenever I want to get a good grip n not struggle I know I knoe it’s weird but idc I love working on my cars ...oh! N I use supertech 10w-30 👍🏼 no problems as Well....
Don't think I would not change the oil before the mileage listed on the filter box. Cheap oil, cheap filter. Both work good from Walmart.
The plastic cage is actually really good cuz it doesn't restrict oil flow. It is the same filter as the acdelco

Funny thing is, Walmart's TLE, or tire, lube express, does NOT use supertec in the shop. They use stock Fram filters. That speaks volumes as to what Walmart thinks of their own brand of filters. If you want a filter other then a stock Fram, you have to request one at the time you take it in for the oil change. Otherwise, you get a POS Fram filter....
Walmart filters are made by an outside manufacturer, not by Walmart. SuperTech is just a private brand.

I have a 96 Olds 88 with a 3800 V6. Car has 150,000. Runs like a clock. I change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles. I use Master Tech Synthetic High Mileage oil and a cheap ass Master Tech filter. Never had a problem yet. Your right about that O ring. I always look up there to make sure the old oil filter ring isn't left on the engine.
How about you do a comparison of just the filter elements that the newer engines have??? Thanks
personally until I seen thse camparative issues ,I was surprised to see that a brand I thought was one of the best used cardboard end caps instead of metal

Dan, the Supertechs have two styles. One with the PAPER end-caps like the orange can of death, and the metal. You can tell the difference BEFORE you buy when at the store, so open the package and see the end of the filter that screws onto the car. If it looks like there's a REALLY THIN EXTRA layer of flat metal then that's the paper end-cap culprit! WHY??? I was considering buying these filters for my old f-150 but not now. I'll just stick with napa gold or motorcraft if I was going to cheap out. I can't find the efficiency/micron rating on the motorcraft.

In regards to the plastic center tube im sure your aware of how strong plastic is when it’s in a circular or circle shape and I to would think that the super tech would have better oil flow because of the numerous and larger openings in the plastic center. For its intended usage it’s probably fine. I used a super tech oil filter many years ago and when it was time for the oil change I hard a very hard time getting the filter off. Since than I have never used one again. Also on this last oil change i used the fram ultra on my wife’s car and the tough guard on my truck, for the first time in many years I decided to give them a try again. So far so good👍, years ago all I would use is fram and never thought anything about it lol.

Walmart don't make there own filters or lubricant like most company's they have a major manufacturer does this they themselves engineer these products I believe they just sell them under their name

No it does not. I run 1 of the 3 machines that make the element (paper with the metal endcap piece). I may have actually made that element although I don't think so due to the position of the inkblot. If I stand on a metal core laid on its side it will crush. The same with the plastic core (we call them cores not center tubes). I weigh 175 pounds and can stand on the plastic core if it is standing upright and it will not crush. I know because when they drop out of the machine I have to sweep them up and I crush them under foot to make them sweep easier. If they are upright I have to knock them over to crush them. The endcaps are attached to the paper with a hotmelt glue poured into the endcap. This glue is at 430 degrees and I have never seen a core melt when put into the hotmelt.

It APPEARS to be a fiber-filled polymer resin.

What I hate about the Supertechs is the gaskets swell up so bad you have a hell of a time getting it off without crushing the case. And that after being careful not tightening too much. Thin cases too.
Why worry about crushing a used filter?
Did he ever check Toyota OEM oil filters ? I heard they have a special check valve. Whatever that means.
How about Prime Guard filters from Rural King, I use their POF241 on my 2 cyl. yard tractor they are $1.99.
