    WHAT ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES TO THIS FILTER ?
    I MEAN LARGER FILTERS WHICH ARE COMPATIBLE

      I don't know of any larger Supertechs or K&Ns that would fit. But I think a Wix 51568 is a larger filter that would fit.

      LOL well I've met a lot of ppl who, presented with these two on the store shelves, with you telling them they are the same, with you sending them the link to this video, will somehow still come out the store having bought the "brand name" (in this case K&N). Similarly no matter how good you tell them Super Tech synthetic oil is, guess what they're going to buy instead? All for their 15yr old beater car that's got all kind of oil leaks, exhaust leaks, faded and swirled paint, engine light on, etc...but nah man their car is too good for Super Tech! 🤨 That's why companies don't care this info is "out there" as it barely affects their sales/profits at all.

    Years ago, I worked at a oil filter company in Greensboro, NC and learned they made filters for many brands and most are identical. So these two were probably made in Greensboro using the exact same materials except for the color and brand name.

      It depends a lot on where you place your values.
      My chief concern is Micron Rating, and the Bosch Premium oil filter has one of the very best Micron Ratings in the industry.
      Their patented FILTECH media beats the others flat.
      The "fantasy" lives in the minds of those who believe that the Cheap Stuff is just as good as the Good Stuff.

      People become "experts" by being thoroughly trained in the design, construction, care, and feeding of their assigned product specialties.
      Whip City Wrencher's extensive experience with cutting oil filters open and reporting on his findings qualifies him as an "expert" on the subject -- AND he listens to his followers' suggestions, and he acts accordingly.

Yes, I even used the Fram "Orange can of death." I just change my oil every 6 months regardless of mileage and I drive speed limit. I just prefer Puralator BOSS because it's built like a brick and the design is flawless. Also, it's made in the USA .

    One thing I noticed for sure was that the K&N endcap has more robust looking spot welds.
    One thing I'm not sure about is the anti drain back valve. It looked like the blue Supertech one was a bit floppier than the K&N. I don't know if that would be a good thing or not.
    Lastly, the stamped bypass valve spring looked like crap in the K&N. Did you notice how wrinkly it is?
    No, I'm not a K&N fanboi at all. I bought a truck with a K&N air filter once and immediately changed it out. So no. Not a believer, I'm just pointing out that there appear to be differences that may or may not be important, but I would say that some parts go down a different line.

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  2 года назад +4

      My guess is that they are probably made on two different machines/lines just because they are not the same color.
      But for the most part, they are the same. You could probably open these up on a different day and the Supertech base plate welds may look different. The same goes with the bypass valves.

    really love your content on oil Filters. One thing my squirrel brain keeps thinking. When you use a knife, scissors or w/e cutting device. I would think that it would crush the filter media in some fashion. And then your using a micron device to measure thickness. I think this would impact the results. I understand this isn't science perfect and you do great work. Just a thought that i had watching your videos. The only suggestion i could make would be to not cut out a section OR cut out a larger piece so that the crushing effect isn't so close to where your taking the measurements.

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  2 года назад +2

      I appreciate your concern that the measurement may not be exact and it's not exact because the filter element is not exactly the same thickness throughout the whole filter. I can measure one spot and go to another area and the measurement will be slightly different. The thickness gauge that I use has a flat surface that is about 3/8 of an inch wide and I cut the filter with scissors at the seams. It's going to measure the thickest part of that area. I dont think it affects the outcome at all. Thanks for your suggestion.

      YEP. The Brand Names can fool ya with different models and specs.
      Example:
      FRAM filters get beat up badly, all because of the old-timey "Orange Can of Death" moniker.
      Fact is, the newer FRAM ULTRA has some of the best specs in the business, and is more than suitable for most engines and applications.
      We all have our own preferences, and there is no "one size fits all" deal going on anywhere.
      I research my parts purchases BEFORE buying, and find these reviews helpful in some cases, but not all.

    I notice this is a trend now days with what I call "Secondary brands", Primary being the big 4, P F W and C. The secondary bands look like they just bid out to the big 3 and whoever comes back the cheapest ends up making the filters for however long the contract period is for, which seems to be 2-5 years just from my observations. I also am noticing that Champ seems to be going away from the double plate inlet holes for this style shown.

    • @brandonupchurch7628
      @brandonupchurch7628 2 года назад

      In my observation the double plate still seems to be used on filters with the combo valve, and the more fram-esque plate is used on the ones with a bypass valve in the leaf spring.

I like how they extend the sealing gasket to the O.D. of filter too on this application. Other 9688/3593a filters use a narrow gasket that doesn't extend to O.D. Oh and look at the box, XX claims 30% more efficiency then X. Since the media (filter paper) looks the same between the two filters you showed in the video it would be safe to assume that the filters came off the same process, factory, and line. The plastisol (glue) looks the same also. I would be interested to know if the K&N box made any bold claims of superiority! Good video by the way.

    Good analysis on these filters. I have used K&N filters in the past and the filter media has always been red in color and they are made in China. Also where the seam is has been a metal clip not a glue joint. Plus they advertise that the K&N is a low restriction filter on the box. I don't see this claim on the box for this filter. This K&N is probably made by Champion. These filters also look identical to the Castrol filter I just bought which is made by Champion. I wonder if K&N provides this filter to Walmart to meet their price point or charge more to get the K&N name. In this case the Super Tech is the better choice. I am going to go to one of the big auto parts stores and check the K&N filters there and see if they are the same as the Walmart K&N filter. Both filters look to be very well made.

    I've kind of soured on the K&N filters over the last 15 years or so. Not worth the hype or what they previously used to be. I think the best filters are the Purolator (Boss and Pure One) and the Ford filters. Really strange how most of the labeling is all stickers now and the stickers look like the same format. Not all that long ago they were practically all painted or inked on. Nearly every service station in the '60's and '70's had their own private labeled filters that had painted logo's. I just used an old Wix 51515 from a batch I bought 23 years ago under Dana's ownership of the brand. The difference compared to today's Wix was stark, not favoring the new either.
