    High performance and racing filters typically don't filter as well as the regular filters. Flow is more important under racing or other 'performance' driving.

    • @123Chevyman
      @123Chevyman 28 дней назад

      If it has higher flow, will it reduce oil pressure then? I wonder why my Lincoln 460 has its oil pressure light on when idling hot. I used 10W30 oil first. Then I switched to 15W40 with a new filter. Still oil pressure light when hot and idling in drive. I now think about the fact that I use K&N filters, which were not used before. No red light before the oil change.

    • @dwendt44
      @dwendt44 28 дней назад

      @@123Chevyman As I understand it, The filter, as long as it's not clogged, affects oil pressure very little. Pressure switch is typically AFTER the filter.

    I am a K& N filter guy. I buy them at Walmart for 10 Bucks. However next oil change I will be trying the Super Tech I bought @ Walmart for 3.72 after watching the comparisonon wind city, thanks. I have used K&N for a long time flawlessly. They are also rated for 20,000 miles. Not that I use them that long. In a 98 Expedition, 4.6. Also with Castrol Edge High Mileage 5/20. Also rated for 20,000 miles. In the summer in the south west I use 5/30, because of the heat. Over 200,000 still doesn't burn oil. Thanks wind city for all of your tests. Dutch

    I use the K & N because of the nut with the safety wire hole on my airplane. I have noticed that they moved production to MX and there are several changes. Different relief valve and a smaller filter with a glued seam instead of the metal strip. I may need to switch back to the aircraft filter at over $40 because of the quality of the K&N filter now made in MX.

    On my previous car, I used to buy both depending on which one was cheaper at the time. Often my local farm store had sales, so whichever was less is the one I'd go with, so it wasn't uncommon I'd swap back and forth between oil changes.

      @Vince A When I cut my filters open and see for myself what is in them vs the oil 🤷‍♂️!
      I run them on my built challenger, jeeps and Cummins 5.9l. The oil is always cleaner at 4k with a k&n than most other filters. Napa gold is a close second and wix if I have to. Used to run only wix, but no more spring, stamped leaf spring so I went to k&n for the same price.
      I've also sent oil samples off to Blackstone labs, they confirmed my filter is doing a perfect job cleaning my oil.

    The K&N Gold is really designed for racing applications where higher oil flow rates and managing higher oil pressures are more critical than fine-particle filtration. There's really no reason to pay the price premium for the K&N on a daily driver vehicle. Purolator One or Boss will be the better value, and may even provide a slightly higher level of particle filtration.

    I don't see the K&N being worth the increase of cost. If it had a similar filter media as the Fram XP, for example, then I would certainly give them a gold star. The Purolator One is $7.49 at Menards which goes to show how much mark up parts stores have on filters.

    Great job, Whip City !! Nobody else has the "Microscope Matchup", and it's a really informative feature for your reviews. Rock on !!
    As for the filters:
    Purolator 1 gets best marks for: "20 Micron Rating" ; "Number/Size of Holes in Baseplate" ; "PTFE Gasket" ; "Microscope Image"; "Price" and "Filter Media Area" .
    K&N gets the nod for: "Nut for Removal" and "Cannister Thickness".
    In today's uncertain economy, a reasonable cost is a bigger factor than ever before -- K&N, Amsoil, and Royal Purple are the most expensive brand names, BUT they offer no advantages that would justify the extra money.
    I would leave BOTH of these filters on the shelf -- and stick with the tried-and-true Bosch Premium # 3410 and # 3323 and the 5,000-mile O.C.I. that have served me well for many years of spirited driving over all types of terrain.

I bought one at Walmart a few years ago and it was 10 or $11. Way too much money for that filter, but the features are nice. Both are good filters but unfortunately due to the cost(Advance Auto is expensive) there are better filters out there. The only way I ever get one of these is if they have a great oil/filter deal that interests me which is rare.

      My advance auto had a Mobil deal going 39.99 with a $15 mail in rebate. Any filter of choice. Mobil, frams, purolator even the kn and their car quest house brand.

    My car has 90psi on cold start so the Purolater bypass will be open during cold start if it’s rated at 12-18psi . Cruising oil pressure is 40psi. So the bypass will open all the time for my car. No thanks

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  2 месяца назад +1

      If your oil filter is not clogged the pressure needed for the oil to go through the filter should not exceed the bypass valve pressure. The oil should flow freely through the oil filter. I hope that explanation works for you. Most oil filters have bypass valves that are below 20 psi.
