I'd go with the baldwin but make sure to change it before I hit 5K miles. That sloppy glue on the K&N bugs me to no end, even though the K&N appears to be of higher quality,
FYI nobody else tests filter as well as you, Pete. I've learned more about filters than I ever thought I would.

    K & N 👍
Better micron rating, silicone ADBV, more threads.
Just a better filter all around IMHO. Worth the extra 5 or 6 bucks. Added protection it's worth it 👍
    Nice review 👍

The Walmarts in my area are phasing out the K&N filter so I bought them for $5 a piece at one of my local Walmarts.

I have used hundreds of thousands of Baldwin filters and only had one failure that is very remarkable of 40 years of using them and multiple failures when I wasn't able to use a Baldwin filter which was my first choice

    Pete,
Awesome video! both interesting filters. Baldwin filter looks very good for the price point. A good solid filter you can use with confidence.
Differences in the base plates and bypass valve engineering always amazes me. It would be so cool to see the filter and bypass in action!
    Have a nice weekend!

i was going to give the win to the KN until I saw the length of the filters. I would still take KN over the baldwin, however, still take a Purolator or Wix

If these filters were the only options on the shelf that would fit my application, I would use the K&N. Better media and a silicone anti-drainback valve justify the cost difference. One interesting thing is what looks like some kind of blue sealant on the Baldwin's baseplate.
I do like how the Baldwin's coil spring is a "preference".

I wouldn't go out my way for either one of these filters. Rather than the K&N, just buy equivalent Super Tech MP series with nylon cage ~$6 WM. Other than center tube, same filters. The Baldwin with nitrile adbv, low-ish efficiency, not readily available. And not one I'd buy in bulk from RA to reduce shipping costs. So, both just a meh for me. Thanks for the vid.

The _vast majority_ of products sold at WM that are "name brand" are manufactured specifically for WM, and are lower grade, cheaper versions of that "name brand" product. Master Lock & WM have an interesting story that underscores this.

    • @jkulysses
      @jkulysses 9 месяцев назад +1

False. Accurate if you're referring to name brands making stuff for Walmart under the Super Tech name maybe but Valvoline isn't making a different blend of their oil for Walmart then they are for Autozone.

I'm personally not a fan of either of those filters, but I would and have used the Baldwins a long time ago. They are well constructed but use your typical cellulose media and nitrile rubber construction. OK for your low change intervals around 3k miles. Don't really like anything K&N makes, but I have used their products 35+ years ago. The 'select' seems to be all over now compared to the old white cans. The Baldwin filters serve the Ag market and heavy truck industry where they have frequent oil service so those filters are just fine for those customers.

I'll be sticking with the Premium Guard Extended/ Microgard Select filters. Much better construction and they have an integrated relief valve. Premium Guard Extended can be had at a better price if you can find deals.

If I'm using Royal Purple, Motul, Redline, Amsoil or Liqui Moli then I would use K&N. If regular Brands like Castrol, Valvoline, Mobile1 or Penrite then Baldwin. The reason is K&N is ment to filter the Oil quicker then regular oil filter.

Was wondering if all the extended mileage filters with low micron ratings will actually have lower filtration rates near the end of their lifecycle because they have trapped so much in deposits? If ever I win the lottery, I'm going to run a car with extended oil and filter til it seizes as an experiment. Well, my wife will. I'll still do 5K OCI

I've used the Baldwin B43 and the K/N filter at different times in my G6. I bought the Baldwin because of its reputation in heavy trucking and industrial applications, yet would choose the K/N again due to better filtration if desperate for a decent filter. However, I'd choose my Motorcraft FL321 over both of them.
Good video and comparison/focus points :)
