  • Can't Believe What I Found Inside This FRAM OIL FILTER!!
In this video I cut open two of Fram's oil filters to see what the difference is. The first filter, the Fram Tough Guard, cost less than $4 and the second, Fram Ultra Synthetic, just under $9. I have to say, I was surprised at what I found inside.
That Fram Ultra Synthetic seems to be, to me, just as good as any others including WIX or Mobil 1 or K&N...

I stopped using Fram oil filters over 10 years ago. I replaced Fram with Wix, AC-Delco, Mobil 1 and sometimes Bosch. They’re(Fram)not the go to standard anymore, and haven’t been, for some time now.

    • @elihernandez330
      @elihernandez330 2 года назад +12

I hope you know that AC Delco filters also use that style and so does Rolls-Royce and Honda. all it does is it seals in Media it doesn't reinforce anything that's what the center core is for. I wouldn't really use Bosch and m1 filters as they are actually known to be crappy and only filter to about 67% at 20 microns or 99% at 30 microns which is really pathetic because the cheapest Fram still does 95% at 20 microns and the silver and gold one do 99% at 20 microns. Your engine doesn't care what brand oil can is on it or what caps seal the media it cares about how clean the actual oil is when it gets pumped around into it. And no frams don't explode a failed oil pump pressure relief valve and hard use does. If I wanted to treat my engine well I would use an oil filter that gets 99% at 20 microns like the silver or gold fram. Why not get the ultra. Costs the same but is metal capped and has the best filtration out of all of them at 20 microns. Can't beat it. And they just released an updated version which is even better at the 5 and 10 micron efficiency so the new ones should be even better yet and they still weren't beat by the other off-the-shelf ones.

@@elihernandez330 Fram’s are made crappy, the last time I looked. I also use Napa Gold too when I can catch them on sale. I change my oil every 3,000 mi(4,800 km), rain 🌧 or shine ☀️ I use 100% synthetic. While down here in South America, I’ve been using MOTUL 8100 X-clean 5W30. Can’t find any U.S.oil down here. Liquid Moly is supposed to be good too.

Sorry my friend, these are factual based, I didn’t do the testing, these companies are independent and are not sponsored by anyone, and as one of my siblings owns a couple of major dealership franchises Mahlë are the OEM manufacturers for them, and as any vehicle manufacturer knows their products in after sales should equal if not bette than the vehicle made...
No one uses Wix filters in aftermarket OE product sales or any reputable shop/garage would either, if they do then it’s for bottom line and profit margins...
Near every European vehicle manufacturer uses MANN/Mahlë as OEM, near all Asian market made vehicles use AISIN OEM filtering units, US follow suit on some products but many, AC Delco is probably best OEM in US, the rest I wouldn’t really consider.

I have found that up to +- 3000 miles paper filters, just filter better than some synthetic media filters. Past 3000 miles I would use the more expensive ones. Several tests I saw showed that paper media is more effective in filtering debris as also better in flow rate than other media. But.....change them frequently.

Studies have shown that even under the worst conditions, in a normally operating engine, essentially no filter will be anywhere near capacity at 5K, and the vast majority of filters can go multiple times more than 10K miles. The data, which was done by a major OEM, is online, although I would have to dig it up. Other than wanting to drain as much oil as possible during an oil change, there is absolutely no point in changing oil filters at 5K. The end cap is also not structural and only serves to help glue the filter media together. Toyota, for example, doesn't even use an end cap.

People that have had failures on the orange cans is because they run em longer than they’re designed to run. I ran the orange can for years in 3k intervals and when I realize that oils were improved and we can run longer intervals, I went up to the longer interval can and I do 5-7 k on the synthetic fram.

This could highlight what you both find good, or not so good, about the same car, and what you all might find that is not needed and/or a concern for the average family that may be considering purchasing their “second most expensive” purchase. Folks always pick on Fram. The thing is, if you change your oil when you're supposed to, the brand of filter becomes less of an issue. Most folks do not change the oil when they're supposed to. Some never change it, and then they have no idea why they experience issues at 50,000 miles. And some use low quality oil. Yes, the brand of oil makes a difference too! Ever take apart an engine, or remove valve covers and it looks like a cross between Jello and roofing tar in there... it's not supposed to. It has everything to do with oil change intervals.
I've used the cheap, orange Fram filters for more than 30 years. I've used other brands as well. And in 30 years, I've never had an engine fail because of oil issues.

And the anti drain back keeps the oil in the motor instead of back in the oil pan, so when you start the car, the oil is still in everything.

Most engine wear damage iresults from wear particles between 5-20 microns so your normal full flow filters don't do a great deal of protection. Best to also fit a bypass filter system which filters in the range of 1-2 microns which is receiving only around 10% of the oil flow at any moment.

Modern synthetic's suspend such particles, 20 microns is as far as you need to go.

I run super tech full synthetic high mileage and I use the gold fram oil filter it's way better at keeping the oil clean plus it doesn't have that cardboard that breaks down.

This is a great format Jimmy. Ferris has a great idea on running each filter and then comparing each. Don't think I've seen any other channels do that kind of comparison on oil filters. Great video guys!

What I run on my SBC'S is NAPA'S 1794 oil filter. They're probably a quart and a half, a little longer, but I've never had any ground clearance problems. Having your wife with you in the video was fun. By the way I have a 1995 GMC VANDURA. I let one of my daughters drive it for a while and now I have issues. My oh my....

Every oil filter has an efficiency vs micron particle size performance curve. The Fram efficiency rating is per ISO 4548-12, which has been a world wide industry standard to measure filter efficiency for the last 22 years. If an oil filter is rated at 99% @ 20 microns, it will still remove particles smaller than 20 microns, but at a lower efficiency, like for example 70% @ 15 microns, and 50% @ 10 microns.

Great info.. You are right to change oil early. My oil filter is guaranteed for 20,000 miles and the FULL synthetic oil is guaranteed for 16,000 and I change at about oil and filter at about 12,000 miles. Nothing is gauranteed so i change a bit early. (both Castrol)

I used to always buy fram filters but there are so many better brands for less money. Napa gold is so much better quality.

The last time I bought a fram filter was about 10 years ago, and I stopped doing it because after removing it from my cars the element was punctured broken.
