    Thanks for the in depth review. But, I dont understand the comparisons to Quest here and on other reviews of the RIft S. These are two distinct products for two distinct audiences. VR for me is flight sim, DCS, and Project Cars 2. For others, they may be happy just doing 30 minutes of Beat Saber on the quest and putting the headset away. I do understand the confusion on pricing and I have to agree that the Quest at $400 with the processing built in etc... is the same price as the Rift S is a bit confusing. The price of the Quest has no bearing on which headset to get though. The Quest simply doesnt fulfill my VR needs. I cant imaging playing games on a Snapdragon Processor is even close to the experience you would get with a GTX1080ti or even a GTX 1060 on a laptop. Furthermore, the Quest doesnt support desktop/laptop applications such as flight sim.
    The RIft S is a little disappointing, especially the audio as you mentioned. Coming from a Oculus CV1, I still feel like the overall experince will be improved and thankfully external sensors are a thing of the past on the Rift S. Both the Valve Index and RIft S are on order. The Index is going to be my heavy hitter permanently tethered to the desktop (with sensors unfortunately). My Rift S is going to be for my laptop, so I can set it up with my kids in a larger space and play VR only titles and room scale games. This is something that wasnt feasible with the original rift. Looking forward to both headsets and hope they are as good as advertised.

    I hated the 3 sensors set up from the original Rift so incredibly much. I always had issues with it. That was my main reason to sell my old rift and get the Rift S. Which turned out to be basically a free "upgrade".

It was multiple bad accidents waiting to happen. These sensors are only good for permanent setups with the room designed around them.

      @briank3754 5 лет назад +1

      It depends on your situation. If you have multiple users (kids) and dont have room to play roomscale type games then the RIft S is a massive upgrade even without considering improved resolution and visual clairity. Good bye sensors! The ability to keep my Rift S hooked up to my laptop in my living room makes it a winner over the original. Although I will admit I ordered the Index as well. Truly I feel that will be a substantial improvement over the OG RIft without any compromises. But yes, my orginal Rift was a good piece of kit and I enjoyed a great deal for flight sim and Project Cars 2.

    I've owned all Oculus devices and have the S on order. I'll be buying again in 3 years. I considered other companies, but at $400, this is much better deal than $1k for the other systems. I can live with this for a few years. Next gen should be amazing, if they go by the cell phone evolution rate. Elite Dangerous was too difficult with the earlier models. I constantly needed to see my keyboard. Hope this solves that problem.

    The Rift S is supposed to replace the Rift, so why does everything feel like a compromise in comparison? Compromised tracking, refresh rate, lens adjustment, audio. This isn't supposed to be the budget option, it's supposed to be their flagship headset.

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 лет назад +1

      Rift S is not a replacement. Oculus has stated this many times. It's a refresh, not an upgrade of any kind.
      Facebook is taking on compromises to get to their goal of getting VR in a million homes.
      Also, the Rift S is technically not a Oculus product, it's Lenovo's kit.
      The Rift S also is NOT thier flagship product, nor is it intended to be.
      They are supposedly still working on a next Rift product, but after seeing Brendan Iribe and his team leave in the middle of making that kit becasue facebook wanted to focus on mainstream VR, we don't know if a decent high-end kit will come. If it does, it won't be anytime soon. They have scrapped Bredan's project.

    • @ERWebster
      @ERWebster 5 лет назад

      Yea, I'm not sure why they would release two budget builds at the same price point. I understand that inside-out tracking has huge appeal for a lot of people, I can see going that route. But why not make everything else premium? It feels like with just 2 or 3 small differences (great on-board headphones, 90hz OLED panels with IPD adjustment, Yaw adjustment) they would have had a massive winner on their hands.

    • @meowmix705
      @meowmix705 5 лет назад

      By Oculus' own numbers, 80% of Rift owners only used 2 sensors. So for a vast major of existing and incoming owners, they'll have that equivalent 3 sensor setup out of the box. And because it won't have USB bandwidth issues, it'll be room-scale without needing that computer techie knowledge to fix the USB errors.
      $400 is still a lot of money, and this is not a budget option. This is the middle mainstream headset backed up with the best VR content.

    • @Punko1969

      Increased resolution, video pass through, single USB and display port, and the halo headband do not feel like a compromise in comparison to the Rift CV1. I understand it's not everything you'd hoped, but saying that everything feels like a compromise isn't true and you know it.

    I'm encouraged by this. As a long haul truck driver VR is tough for me to get into. I got the psvr (my only vr experience at this point not counting the virtual boy many, many years ago) but using it on the truck is difficult due to the limited space and standing 8' from the camera being impossible. Original rift and vive were out of the question with their need for multiple cameras or sensors. I'm going to see how small a space this will work in. Also concerned with marking the boundaries. While I have lots of head room and arm room, my floor space is limited due to the seats, cabinets, and bunk behind me. I'm hoping this can be overcome for controller tracking. Cables won't be an issue as I can have my laptop on the top bunk behind me so the wire will hang down from above and never really touch the floor. Here's hoping for a good experience.

    So recently I got my Rift S shipped from Amazon to my office in 3 days time (fantastic job for UPS to ship it all the way from US to HK over the weekend at that speed). I own the OG Rift for a few years now, bought that a year before the touch controllers were even announced, and with a crazy price like £499 which was the cheapest option for the time. When the touch controllers came out they were like £200 for 2 controllers & 2 cameras, then when the holiday seasons approached, Oculus started to sell the Rift & controllers as a bundle at still £499. Days gone and the price keeps coming down, and it's still £200 to get just the controllers & cameras set which I really can't justify the price, and tbh the cameras setup to get the room-scale experience is just too troublesome for me to pay for that amount of money. Thus, my OG Rift was only used with keyboard & mouse & gamepad for watching videos like I have a private IMAX, play some racing games, and do some development work.
    The Rift S came out, great inside-out tracking, with controllers bundled, and a higher res screen with much less screen-door effect, at just $399. It's a great deal for me. Don't have to fuss with all the cables but still maintain a very accurate tracking on hands & head movement, it's huge improvement over the OG Rift for me as it's much easier to setup across different locations. I know there're many WMR headsets out there also using inside-out tracking with an affordable price as well but to be fair the software of WMR was just trash, at least until they've adopt SteamVR, not sure how the WMR side is doing tho. The Oculus Home is designed so well. Can't say it's completely bug free but definitely a finished product with high quality. That's another factor for me to keep staying in team Oculus. If someone is struggling between getting a WMR headset or a Oculus or even a Valve / HTC headset, go for the latter two, the money you're paying isn't only about the hardware, the software as well. Without a good software, there's no chance you can have enjoyable experience no matter how good the hardware is.
    To me, the Oculus Rift S is a complete product. It's well priced, not cheap but affordable, with reasonable spec to enjoy the joy of full PCVR experience (it's an all-rounded improvement over the OG Rift, except the speakers), and well designed software to support the hardware they've got. It's good entry point for people who wanna get into the VR world, even better than the Quest I'd say (the Quest feels like more or less a gen 1 product to test the market feedback). On paper it's not anything impressive, but after some analysis, it's the most ready one. I wish they could release a premium headband as optional accessory with better SQ (maybe use the speakers on OG Rift) and replaceable pads to buy tho. Not saying the SQ on Rift S is trash, I still use the built-in speakers and it's good enough for me to play BS at home, but I'm living on my own so my house is fairly quiet, and there's no doubt the SQ on OG Rift is a hell lot better.

    I can see folks passing if they own CV1, but I bought CV1 in Feb, and sold for 600! Rift S wins hands down from a usability perspective. I found the Rift to be uncomfortable, lots of face pressure, and the sweet spot was always sliding around. Granted I have a very narrow IPD and my eyes are deeper set, so I'm a bit worried Rift S won't be great either. But overall, this headset tackles a lot of my desired upgrades after a month of experience with the CV1 Rift. Reduced god-rays, sharper image, wider sweet spot with better lenses, and NO PIA external sensors! Pass-through looks like a huge usability upgrade - one that this review simultaneously praises as a huge feature, but also says isn't worth upgrading over. Passthrough seems like a pretty huge upgrade to me - at least I can tell my wife she'll never know when I can actually see her trying to laugh at me in VR ;-)

With all things considered the S is the winner overall with the latest crop of new headsets. No HMD out there gets everything right, or even most it seems right now. I got a taste of VR with my DK2 and it was awesome, but since the consumer Rift came out it hasn't been usable and I haven't had the extra money to blow on a new headset. I have tried just about every headset out there currently from the pimax 4k, 5k series to the HP Reverb and the rift s is the bang for the buck winner easily at the moment, all other solutions are either missing stuff (pimax, no controllers, no headphones) or are at least 2x the price making the S at it's price point IMHO the best value in VR right now. There a a couple WMR headsets that are decent for less but overall package, price, ease of use, controllers - everything considered - it's not even really close. I am looking forward to seeing what the cosmos brings.

    Good review. About the black levels: a lot of these pro reviewers are missing an important part of most dark and space games (like Elite Dangerous). That's that the God rays are terrible in those games. They can get so bad that it really does break the immersion. I'd rather have a grayish black sky than God rays ANY DAY. I'll definitely be upgrading to the S.

      EVOLICIOUS It is an upgrade. The Rift S is far better than the CV1. The specs are better other than the refresh rate. The tracking is better (the old tracking was absolute garbage) and you also get a pass through mode which is very useful. The headset is built a lot better with the new halo strap. Audio and the IPD are the only drawbacks but obviously only if your IPD is out of range and in my case it isn’t. Therefore the headset is an upgrade from the CV1. I mean unless you have tried the headset out for you to say such a bland and unexplained point; “rift s is not an upgrade, lol.” then I wouldn’t say anything.

    • @christophermartin7744
      @christophermartin7744 5 лет назад +4

      The ultimate goal of virtual reality is immersion. The S does have a higher level of immersion, period. Less screen door, less God rays and more comfort means a higher level of immersion. In that way, the S is certainly and upgrade that is not offset by the loss of a bit of audio quality.
      What Oculus was going for was evolution, not revolution. It is a small upgrade to immersion but a huge upgrade in usability, affordability and mass market appeal, which is what VR surely needs. Without a bigger market, there will be no advances. The Index appeals to the hardcore enthusiasts, but without a mass market to fund games and software development, that high end HMD will be nothing but a useless brick on your head.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 5 лет назад +14

      Well, technically all WMR have better resolution displays and run at 90hz rather than 80. The Samsung Oddysy+ in particular has a very significantly superior display, physical IPD adjustment, better audio with quality flip back headphones, and has been on sale for $100 cheaper than the Rift-S. The one most crucial thing that distinguishes the Rift-S from the WMR headsets is simply the extra tracking coverage, making it suitable as a gaming headset. WMR was never aimed at VR gaming, and thus never much needed off screen tracking. It's always been able to play the majority of games well enough, but the narrower frontal tracking coverage was still significant enough a downside to give the gaming market over to the original Rift and Vive despite the extra expense and lower res.
      Had one of the initial WMR brands included the extra cameras from the start, it would have likely made the Rift-S redundant before it was born.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 5 лет назад +9

      How so; the index is fundamentally still the same tech, still the same lighthouse sensors, still the same hardware with better lenses and a slightly faster refresh rate.
      Just because someone put out some extra specs you consider that being the best on the market? Following that concept, Nintendo that make uber-underpowered devices for decades, should not even be in business.
      The rift without any need for sensors is a win; most can't really tell the difference once you pass 80 Hz (science say so; there are a lot of study made with placebo, that did show people having less nausea when it was told them that the refresh rate was higher), and the only improvement is the display tech; which is iterative. If the Index was the same price as the S, then yes, that would be a better purchase, but if you just started with VR, can't really justify 600 dollars more for the Index, compared to the S.

    • @rubberduck8867
      @rubberduck8867 5 лет назад +8

      @@fcf8269 The index has low persistence, significant FOV boosts, eye strain and IPD adjustments, much better inbuilt audio, higher quality planels with higher refresh rates. much better lenses, and so on, in addition to the huge potential in the knuckle controllers. You have completely missed key things about the index. Also if you want to go on price, if you already have a vive and are fine with the wands for now then the index is only costing you 499$. 100$ more for massive fov boost,s ipd and lense distance adjustments, vastle superior audio, lowest persistance scene in an HMD (HUGE DEAL), much better lenses and so on. For 100$ more that makes the S seem entirely pointless (if you are happy with a vive). Personally i'm going from a DELL WMR to an INDEX and I am extremely happy to do so.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 5 лет назад +3

      @@fcf8269 The lighthouse tracking is _the_ primary reason that Index is the only worthwhile option to me. After having gotten used to enjoying full body tracking, going to an integrated camera based tracking system would feel like being paralysed from the waist down. Integrated tracking is convenient, but also a significant comprise in my opinion. When I see people talking about integrated vs external tracking, to me it's often like hearing someone telling an audiophile that his home's surround sound speaker setup looks intrusive and that earbuds are far more practical. If the home gets in the way of the ideal setup, then the home is the problem, not the setup.
      The refresh rate tests you are talking about are also based upon watching moving images on a conventional static display. That's an entirely different scenario to VR, where your entire perspective is shifting with every head motion in real time, and with the potential for very dramatic motions. The typical tests where someone watches a bouncing ball or looping run animation, cannot remotely represent this use case scenario. The human brain is exceptionally well wired to notice the slightest inconsistency or latency in this regard. You can refer to Norm's own testimony of how startling the difference was.
      Whilst the display upgrade is perfectly fair to call iterative, the field of view boost I would argue is more than that. Going from 110 to 135 is a huge leap when factoring in how it's been accomplished via the innovative dual lens design, keeping the headset compact and without having needed to resort to the "brute force" method that Paimax has had to use with the giant lenses, problematic sweet spot, and obstructively wide hammer head style design. You also can't ignore the controllers.
      And ultimately price to value ratio is relative and personal. I spent a little over 2000 hours in VR over the last year, since purchasing my Vive. Based on the cost of £690 to upgrade to Index (I don't need the new lighthouses), If I get the same time value out of the Index and used it for only one year, it would cost me only £0.34 per hour. If the headsets lifespan is two years, then it costs me £0.17 per hour. There are people that spend three times as much every year on takeaway coffee, and think nothing of it.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 5 лет назад

      @@rubberduck8867 If this is worth the extra money for you, go for it; I hear the same arguments from people buying the latest iPhone or iPad; thinking to get the value for their money; but instead, they are not.
      As is now, if you have just a computer, you get a full VR experience without sensors with the S model, for 399; while for the Index you need more than twice that. You are stuck with sensors, you can't carry your headset where you want, and this for me is worth more of the mumbo jumbo you read on the specs.
      FOV boost is relative; you notice it only until you get used to. Otherwise why people don't buy the 4K HMD at that point? You just need a 2080TI to run it at full throttle. Better FOV, better refresh rate, twice as much resolution...
      It make sense if you already have a vive; for everyone else, it does not; unless they have disposable income or just care about specs.

      I think we will have to live with the cable to the PC for a long time to get the pictures from the actual working machine. Otherwise you need a VR headset with a GTX 1080 mounted in front of it or on top of your head :D

    this is my take on the rift s as I am now owner of the headset. Screen door effect is not too noticeable, you have to look for it. Resolution, depending on which games, feels like 1080p or 720p on a normal flat panel since the lenses are so close to your eyes. The "sweet spot" where your eyes adjust for clarity is relatively small, you have to keep your eyes directly looking forward to find it, if you peek at the corners, text is very blurry as well as the image, so it is best to stay looking forward and move your head around instead if you want to focus on something. The IPD adjustment done by software does very little, I can barely notice a difference if the setting is on min or max, what I do is close my left eye, move the headset so the right one is focused, this allows both eyes to focus better. I feel it is best to keep the software IPD to min settings for me. Even with this adjustment, which I have to do every time I slip on the headset... I can still sense I could gain that extra clarity/sync if I had actual physical IPD adjustment. To gain more clarity, it is best to use the physical slider button on the bottom of the headset to pull the lenses closer to your eyes as it helps more. The valve index controllers have an innovative design to allow you to release grip on the controllers completely when not grabbing items, adding to the immersion, BUT, there is a mod from Mamut (roughly $50) that allows rift s controllers to stay on your palms just like the index controllers, it relieves having to hold onto the controllers the entire time, what is missing is that the index controllers have more finger tracking, (you can literally flip people the bird in VR chat), but the value will be based on developer implementation. The usual gestures you get with the rift S controllers are pointing and giving someone a thumbs-up. Tracking is a pretty big issue for me though for the rift S, the cameras have poor detection when the controllers are directly in front of your face, so aiming down the sight for a super accurate shot will make you lose tracking sometimes. When I was trying to get headshots using iron sights in Arizona Sunshine, it would lose tracking sometimes, so I had to pull the controllers back in front of the camera by moving them sideways, re-aim to get a shot, or just abandon it altogether and spam body shots. Unless Oculus improves this, maybe allowing us to add room trackers, I can not recommend this for serious First Person Shooters. Frame rates are at the maxed 80 frames per second for every game for me (Arizona, Lone Echo, Gargantuan) except for DCS World , where I was capped at 40 fps, but it may be some VSYNC that is turned on as it stayed constantly on 40 fps, I will need to look into it. Setup is i7- 7700k, EVGA 1080ti hybrid, 32 gb ram, SSD NVME. For now, I am keeping the Rift S as it is a budget-friendly entry option at $400 if you already have a gaming rig, the Quest is a good option if you do not have a gaming rig already, but the limitations are that you can not play SteamVR games and Oculus will have to port every game over to Quest, having less options than the Rift S in games. Rift S can play SteamVR games, which has probably the largest player-base for games that involve multiplayer (Onward, etc.). The advantage for Oculus store is that it has solid compatibility for their games. What I actually do is, is buy multiplayer games off SteamVR and buy single player games off Oculus as I tend not to replay single player campaign type games too often, if I leave Oculus someday, I am just leaving games that do not have a lot of replay-ability. If I do gravitate to another headset in the future (if Oculus doesn't fix the tracking issue loss directly in front of your eyes), then I can still use my multiplayer licenses on SteamVR to play my staple multiplayer games. Valve Index is around the corner priced at $1000, the main advantages I see for myself if I move to the Valve Index, is the new sensors for individual finger movement (even though I saw multiple videos where the finger tracking isn't completely reliable) and better tracking in directly in front of the headset. A little extra resolution with frame rate increasing from 80 to 120 fps (depending if my 1080ti can even run these games at 120 fps consistently to even reap the benefit) will not be what makes me pony the extra $600, but the tracking will make the difference. If you can wait for the Valve Index, you will have a better time with First Person Shooters due to the external sensor that allows you to aim down the sight more reliably. The Oculus Quest is actually also a major contender as it truly allows you to have freedom of movement. If you do 360 degree turns for around 5 turns, the wires start to twist, my Rift S actually created irreversible tangling inside the cord. I tried to create a ceiling tether where the wires travel along the ceiling but can pull while you move around in your play space, I could still feel the tugging on the headset as I moved around and the worst part was that the cord resistance twisting increased, which reduced the amount of turns I can do even more. Also of course, the cord wraps around your feet without ceiling tethers, something that you have to pay attention to, which breaks the immersion. The Oculus Quest allows you to make as many turns as you'd like, no tangling wires at the feet, no ceiling tethers. You can duck, prone, jump around, twist, side step freely, etc. Games that I feel are better on the Quest are games that make you turn around or move rapidly are: Gargantua, Arizona Sunshine, Onward, Contractors, Creed, etc. Games that are more physically grounded that will take advantage of better graphics are Digital Combat Simulator, driving games, Moss, etc. I like that multiple companies are competing and improving VR technology at the moment, BUT, what would truly take VR to the next level is the Quest improving: graphics / processing power, Steam VR compatibility, improved tracking above, below and directly in front of the headset, and also open-palm controllers (like Valve Index controllers). This is something I would easily drop money on, the Next-Level Quest.

    The Rift S is just a disappointment, imo. Way too many sacrafices, just to include the older but slightly better optics and panels from the Oculus Go, and inside-out tracking. I really wanted this to be a proper step up, but there are so many quirks and compromises, it's hard to tell if it is a step sideways or backwards. As an owner of a CV1, I can't justify it.

      It was very close to being an ideal entry level headset, but just ever so slightly off the mark on too many areas. In an ideal world the Rift-S wouldn't have cut quite so many corners, and those wanting to hang onto true 360 coverage external tracking, should have instead been able to pick up a Vive-Pro for $600. (because seriously, there's nothing in that thing to warrant it costing so much when a Samsung Odyssey+ with a superior display can sell for only $300.)
      Fortunately Valve swooped in to save the neglected/exploited enthusiast market, but it's price has still left something of a gap for mid range headsets. For new comers to VR, it's now very much a choice between either "I guess it'll do" or "I guess I have to go all in".

      it's the equivalent of a console's "slim" version. they release a cost reduced variant a few years into the cycle that is orders of magnitude cheaper to produce while offering largely the same experience at more or less a similar price. it also gives them much more room to adjust the price down for holiday sales. this is definitely one to watch for the thanksgiving sales rift got as low as 350. this could crack 250 later this year

    • @UnknownSquid
