Positional tracking rings are not well placed and have problems with tracking near the face and overlapping. you could reduce the negative effect in VR FPS by angeling forward controller near your face.

@@cptkirkpyro5656 That may be true, i have no other experience to compare it with. My original choice was the index but unfortunately budget was a factor, like it will be for most newbies, so oculus has provided a way for more people to access vr, isnt that a good thing?

Bought a Rift S, sold my CV1 and bought some KZ ZST IEM's from Amazon for when I'm in sims, and the built in 'speakers' are fine for most other things. Zero regrets so far, the clarity upgrade is impressive.
Good vid GM. I swapped out my CV1 for an S and I'm delighted. I can understand why early hands on impressions called it a marginal upgrade, in some ways it is for general VR gaming, but for driving sims it really does hit the sweet spot of needs compared to the CV1 which means it has a big impact. Absolute clarity of car dashes and info panels, being able to pick out brake markers or any trackside object/marking you'd wish to use as a brake marker, and overall clarity of circuits, car details etc adding to immersion. Taken a impression of a great experience in the CV1 to a much better baseline where additional clarity would be a bonus but not an essential. Great upgrade if you don't want to upgrade your PC.
i'm thinking of doing the same thing, going from CV1 to a Rift S (just now in 2023). I have a 1080ti on my racing rig and don't think it can handle much better HMD's to be honest. I tried the Pico 4 last week, but sent it back after two days because allthough i has pancake lenses, there's still a sweetspot and anything outside of that is blurry af. i had high hopes for it, but it dissapointed in that regard. I hope the Rift S is a bump from the CV1, eventhough it is only for simracing.
@@2Air hi, yeah I still think it's a great upgrade if you don't want to change your pc, and who does at current GPU prices. I loved mine, loved the ease of use with inside out tracking, never let me down. I ran mine with a 1080 for years, and a bit with a 6600xt which is around a 1080ti I believe though i suspect you get more VR performance with nvidia than amd. To stay within a sensible render budget its a good choice, in my experience an enjoyable upgrade from the CV1 and occulus always make good lenses. The only other option I can suggest is a Vive Cosmos, with gear vr lenses which you'll run comfortably with a 1080ti. That's what I moved on to knowing I would have all kinds of disappointments with a quest or G2. Cosmos had a really woeful launch so I picked one up, as new for 200 UK £. With the gear vr mod it's very good, that i could describe as a big big leap from the CV1. I haven't rebuilt my rig so I've only used it in the office facing a window, and definitely had tracking issues after some minutes of play (i think because the lighting wasn't right), so sadly can't report if I'll resolve that when I finally put it in a better lit environment, my hunch is from using it that I will. Still worth a consideration though if you find one for not much more than a rift s, but be prepared to spend the extra on the lens mod. There are some vids on here with the cosmos and the gear vr lens mods to take a look at. All the best
I agree with you on every thing mentioned for the Rift S in this video. I have even put my Odyssey plus on the bench cause of the overall clarity being better with the Rift S. @@simracingaddict9687 Actually your IPD of 63 is much better for the Rift S than me(which is 60) cause the optimum center for the Rift S is 64. And I see no problems even being at 60 IPD. Who cares, I have Audio-Technica M40X, hopefully it'll be comfortable with the Rift S. To be honest - all headset speakers suck compared to a real audio headset
Thanks GM. Some good info there. I've had a rift for some time and my Rift S turned up yesterday. You're spot on about how much better it is. I have an IPD of 71 so I only just make the cut and find it's a bit blury on the sides but don't notice it after a while. I just wish ACC was more VR friendly. All the other sims (RF2, IR, AC, RR and PC2) look really good in the Rift S. Hopefully they'll fix the VR in ACC.

I like your videos. Met M.82 a while ago. You two have similar haircuts and humor. You guys should do a stream and race each other. Clash of the mini-titans.
150 Meter board and you can still se the 50?? I got a valve index and have to stop at 110m. I did the test it with assetto Corsa. Supersampling 160% in steamvr
My only issue with FPS is that if you sit your controller too close to the headset it looses tracking. can be annoying at times but you have to remember to keep it at a certain distance. As long as they will offer a much better headset in the future I will keep my S. Its worth every penny and it didnt break the bank!
What do you mean "after market sound solution"??? Just plug some headphones in. The first thing I did with my CV1 was rip those stupid built in speakers off so that they didn't get in the way of my normal headphones. I'm surprised anyone would ever use those for sim racing.
Great to knowGM 👍🏻 now I have to measure my pupil distances ! 😁 does sound like a reasonable upgrade from the cv1 but I guess you have to now way out the price for punch thing.
I don't know. Can someone explain me some settings for like assetto corsa, project cars 2 and euro truck 2 for example. the Distance, like everything after 50m looks pretty pixelated. Don't know why, cars seems quite pixelated like 10m in front of you in project cars and ac. I think I haven't set something right in the settings?
Looks like the view in the Oculus Rift S is better than the video view. As far as sound goes; couldn't you use 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound while using the Oculus Rift S with it's ear piece sound disabled?
right, even with the Valve Index I only see a blurred mess on the road, the point where we look at while driving. I'm looking forward to the day where the center of the screens are getting sharp, suited for sim racing
My impression when I tried it was the sweet spot was incredible, god Ray's are so faint and short the never intrude on the visuals and I nolonger felt like I was looking through lenses at all.
Bought my one last week, first vr headset & a 1070ti, it's properly ridiculously fantastic! The audio thing, I use some decent headphones, easy peasy and will be much better drivers than ones that come with any headset. I don't suppose you have a video showing how to use Assetto Corsa (not acc)? I use the SteamVR launcher but I end up having to minimise a window back on the desktop once the menu music starts. It works but does seem clunky compared with PC2 (which works flawlessly).
I dont use steam vr for ac or anything now ( driving sims).i got ro oculus library launch game from there.you may have to add game from others list .but ac supports oculus in game .no need to use steam vr..i got alot of performance from not using steam vr
Waiting for my Pimax 5k order. I'm coming from a Rift, the more I used it the more I wanted more horizontal FOV. Pimax 5k with a usable 160 degrees of horizontal FOV.
Can you share the in game Pcars 2 settings you run with the rift s? I mess with settings and don't seem to get much difference, and I'm not impressed with it. I want to like it more.
Yeah I'm waiting for them to come in atm, will be best for sim racing... Reverb for sims and it looks like the valve index will be the one for room scale stuff.
Anyone using Hp Reverb that utilises 9.3 million pixels vs. the Rift S which has 3.7 million or other headsets like pimax, report back to see how far you can clearly see this 50m board at Monza 👍🏻
Why is the lack of a microphone option never being discussed? How does one communicate to other drivers in online multiplayer races using the Rift S? Simple earbuds will help with sound, but not with communicating. Am I missing something?
Why didn't you mention the framerate? The refresh rate on this thing is 80, while the rift is 90, meaning a full 5FPS less, which I think is significant when racing. Hell, GT Sport is pixelated as hell but has 60fps which really makes a difference.
No quest uses OLED Quest is a higher resolution and more contrast but the device is quite slow so games run at lower detail. The Rift S uses LCD which is RGB stripe so the pixels look different to pentile screens personally I think the Detail you get from LCD and just the general image quality is better than OLED even if the contrast is worse and blacks are not as dark you get less ghosting, fewer god rays, and a general sharpness to the image that you don't find from pental.
Tracking wobbles like crazy and lower refresh rate makes me sick. I'm using Vr for the last 5 years with no scenes til rift S. visuals are improved but not worth the upgrade, tracking is not good enough. I'm returning.
But support say my Rift S is NOT compatible with my ASRock x470 Taichi mobo and screen stutters ! They say that i need to purchase extension USB card for 1/4 price of Rift S ! There is nowhere info what mobo are compatible and software to check compatibility is saying that everything will work just fine. Want refund for my Rift S and im going to buy Valve Index.

I will need to see some unbiased reviews first tbh. I just bought the Quest because it's obviously much cheaper, but at nearly £1k I can't order an Index and just hope it's as good as I think it'll be. Or maybe I can......
@@BluffMunkey I see. But there are already many reviews of Index and some of them as i think are not biased ones. Try to drop by subreddit -valve index. There you will find some feedbacks from independent devs
Its annoying that they went with DP for the rift s as I had to get rid of mine for the cv1 as my gaming laptop only has HDMI, I've owned a few headsets over the years when I had a pc and honestly the cv1 is still worth it if you don't have DP to hand... the rift cv1 is still a very good quality but yeah the distance is the only issue I have.,
Are you going to get the hp reverb the people who sim race that have it say it's as clear as a 1080p monitor from 6 feet away and is hands down the best
Seeing the shadows moving fast inspired me with the timing and lighting factor that can change the visibility especially with the updates from the middle east which increase the responsibility on our shoulders towards the coming generations who have zero appreciation for the natural resources which are in a critical situation before the upcoming event.
Software IPD does not make the lenses work for people outside fixed lense IPD , all HMD,s have software IPD but hardware bassed IPD is whats important because without it if your IPD is out of range you cannot use the HMD regardless of software settings due to the physical position of the lenses.
fair enough, I only said because I had a psvr for months before I realised it had an adjustment in the software lol, just ordered the rift s for the better variety of games, judging by all the videos I've seen the rift s seems my best option for ''bang for your buck'', thanks for all the good info on it, thankfully mine is in the range of the software adjustment.

Using the Rift S with Astro wireless headset and the experience is simply incredible.
Thanks mate. Have you tried the pimax 5k. I am curious as to the graphical differences between those 2
Not yet but one is in the post so I'll get back to you on that lol
My only issue with FPS is that if you sit your controller too close to the headset it looses tracking. can be annoying at times but you have to remember to keep it at a certain distance. As long as they will offer a much better headset in the future I will keep my S. Its worth every penny and it didnt break the bank!
What do you mean "after market sound solution"??? Just plug some headphones in. The first thing I did with my CV1 was rip those stupid built in speakers off so that they didn't get in the way of my normal headphones. I'm surprised anyone would ever use those for sim racing.
Glad this exists
Great to knowGM 👍🏻 now I have to measure my pupil distances ! 😁 does sound like a reasonable upgrade from the cv1 but I guess you have to now way out the price for punch thing.
Can't wait for you to test the same with reverb and Index !
Don't forget....everything in front of you is the same distance...regardless of "distance". So, the sharper it's rendered the better you will see.
Will you be getting the HP Reverb to compare it with the Rift S now its available to buy.
There's plenty of vids on RUclips saying the difference is night and day in the reverbs favour.
What’s the deal with the headphones or lack of? The audio must be shat compared to the CV1?
what game is he playing?
looks like Onward added mode called virtual gunstock for better inside out tracking in their latest update
How much does FPS drop and on what hardware?
I don't know. Can someone explain me some settings for like assetto corsa, project cars 2 and euro truck 2 for example. the Distance, like everything after 50m looks pretty pixelated. Don't know why, cars seems quite pixelated like 10m in front of you in project cars and ac. I think I haven't set something right in the settings?
actually looks like my hmd is running at a lower resolution??
I have same issue u manage to find a fix ?
@@webstar8921 yes i did. Oculus tool. Or in settings set your sampling to 1.8
Looks like the view in the Oculus Rift S is better than the video view.
As far as sound goes; couldn't you use 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound while using the Oculus Rift S with it's ear piece sound disabled?
it has ipd in the oculus software now. just got my ipd from my opticians and now ACC looks great with my rift s
Recorded footage through the monitor looks way more high res than when looking through the lense..
right, even with the Valve Index I only see a blurred mess on the road, the point where we look at while driving.
So its an ok upgrade but what I want to know is how it compares to the Odyssey. And secondly, anone on a Pimax with that awesome FOV?
Waiting for my Pimax 5k order. I'm coming from a Rift, the more I used it the more I wanted more horizontal FOV. Pimax 5k with a usable 160 degrees of horizontal FOV.
Can you share the in game Pcars 2 settings you run with the rift s? I mess with settings and don't seem to get much difference, and I'm not impressed with it. I want to like it more.
U manage to find a fix ?
Worth doing a comparison between CV1 and the new Quest 2.
If you want to make a REALLY BIG jump from your Rift or Vive look up the 170 degrees Pimax 5k+ or if you got a ton of $ check out the XTAL!
glad i grabbed my S at clearance~
Bought the wrong headset. Should've gotten a Reverb like me.
Yeah I'm waiting for them to come in atm, will be best for sim racing... Reverb for sims and it looks like the valve index will be the one for room scale stuff.
Reverb is worse
Anyone using Hp Reverb that utilises 9.3 million pixels vs. the Rift S which has 3.7 million or other headsets like pimax, report back to see how far you can clearly see this 50m board at Monza 👍🏻
Why is the lack of a microphone option never being discussed? How does one communicate to other drivers in online multiplayer races using the Rift S? Simple earbuds will help with sound, but not with communicating. Am I missing something?
Has built in microphone.
@@57strub Oh ok. Thank you.
Why didn't you mention the framerate? The refresh rate on this thing is 80, while the rift is 90, meaning a full 5FPS less, which I think is significant when racing. Hell, GT Sport is pixelated as hell but has 60fps which really makes a difference.
Now review a Pimax 5k with 160 degree of usable horizontal fov and higher clarity.
ePoot Sweviver is this your secondary account?!?
Thank you Michael Caine!
cant wait for part 2 of this with the reverb.
How far can you see at Brands, in the wet, on ACC? About 3ft. :)
ACC is pure garbage in VR..... In fact garbage is better
are the screens the same on the oculus s and the quest
No quest uses OLED Quest is a higher resolution and more contrast but the device is quite slow so games run at lower detail.
The Rift S uses LCD which is RGB stripe so the pixels look different to pentile screens personally I think the Detail you get from LCD and just the general image quality is better than OLED even if the contrast is worse and blacks are not as dark you get less ghosting, fewer god rays, and a general sharpness to the image that you don't find from pental.
Where do you live, I’m gonna search your bins. I’m still on a dk2 and I’d like a clear image before I need glasses to see it.
Nice video! What about field of view?
I think the immersion for simracing is fantastic, but picturewise...... I will pass on that for another 2 gens of VR headsets I guess
Link to Amazon US goes to the UK site
@GM: Can you please do this test again, but in comparison with the Valve Index?
Tracking wobbles like crazy and lower refresh rate makes me sick. I'm using Vr for the last 5 years with no scenes til rift S. visuals are improved but not worth the upgrade, tracking is not good enough. I'm returning.
a better option is to buy used CV1 with 3 sensors around $230 now
110m/80m =1.375! 37,5% better screen clarity?
40% more pixels on the S, funny how that almost lines up
great! I'll stick with my vive for a bit longer.. maybe get an index if they ever sell to my region
Want refund for my Rift S and im going to buy Valve Index.
it cleary states a USB 3.0 connector :v if it wasnt working its either your mobo or a faulty headset
Still on track ir5. Waiting for next improved version of Oculus.
The Rift S will allow you to change your IPD but it done via software
And software does not fix physical lenses positioning issues. So no it does not allow you to change the IPD
@@GamerMuscleVideos Press the Oculus button on your right Touch controller. This will bring up the Dash.
Select Settings.
Select Headset.
Select the + or - button to adjust the Rift S IPD.
I advice against watching this vid on a phone (size 6S). Couldn’t even see the sign anymore 😂
What i would like to know. Does the fps drop much from Rift to rift S?
90fps in the original rift and 80fps in the rift s.. the vr guys that use vr constantly cant even tell the diffrence between those 10fps and mainly due to how much clearer it is to begin with
@@sirdiabolical1041 Nah i don't mean the refresh rate but i would like to know if there is a big fps loss because of the higher resolution. My 1070 works "fine" with the Rift but i would think i have to lower settings to get the same fps on the Rift S
@@Bambeakz oh ok well yer iv got a i7 8700k at 4.7 GHz and a RTX 2080ti.. i think i get my rift S tomorrow but not sure if there will even be frame drops at all with my setup but ill try and let you know
Is it even possible to wear headphones with this headset? The headband looks like it would get in the way. I guess IEM's are a solution but they tend to hurt my ears after a while.
Are you going to test the HP Reverb?
Oh man, I need to know what's that music at the ending.
Powerwalkin' Future Joust
@@mantus3243 You're amazing.
Rift S for $360 or a used Odyssey+ for $180 for simracing?
of course, the Odyssey, has more better panel, whit no SDE, also adjustmen IPD, and better FOV, thank me later
Hi GM great review, thanks. Will SS (supersampling) improve this even more? I do not read much about that.
Update : The Rift S has software IPD adjustment
Hurry up and review the Index please so I can affiliate think that thing.
You will not be able to buy Index until october or even later. There is no need to hurry up unfortunately
I choose to ignore this comment and hurry anyway.
@@BluffMunkey Index is much better it is obvious. If you hurry up how can you get it erlier than october?
I will need to see some unbiased reviews first tbh. I just bought the Quest because it's obviously much cheaper, but at nearly £1k I can't order an Index and just hope it's as good as I think it'll be. Or maybe I can......
@@BluffMunkey I see. But there are already many reviews of Index and some of them as i think are not biased ones. Try to drop by subreddit -valve index. There you will find some feedbacks from independent devs
1:06 the rift S has IPD adjustment, its just software-based rather than hardware-based
The audio is the biggest caveat. I really hate that they chose the halo speakers instead of headphones.
Its annoying that they went with DP for the rift s as I had to get rid of mine for the cv1 as my gaming laptop only has HDMI, I've owned a few headsets over the years when I had a pc and honestly the cv1 is still worth it if you don't have DP to hand... the rift cv1 is still a very good quality but yeah the distance is the only issue I have.,
it does have IPD, its just in the software, its not a hardware change
Are you going to get the hp reverb the people who sim race that have it say it's as clear as a 1080p monitor from 6 feet away and is hands down the best
What's the music at the end? It's very Miami Vice-esque...
Seeing the shadows moving fast inspired me with the timing and lighting factor that can change the visibility especially with the updates from the middle east which increase the responsibility on our shoulders towards the coming generations who have zero appreciation for the natural resources which are in a critical situation before the upcoming event.
it does have ipd adjustment, its just in the software and not the hardware, I think it goes from 58mm to 72 mm, not as good granted but it is there.
Decision vr or motion rig?
