Hz in VR is much different to monitor. It is because you can really notice everything. So anything below 80hz is noticeable in a fast paced game such as beat saber.
@@lee-br9wd Refresh rate is way more important in VR than flatscreen though. The difference between 90-120 was enough for me to avoid motion sickness, and went from being able to only play in 30min bursts to playing for several hours without issues. The past 10 minutes for me - Watch Half Life Alyx trailer - Watch Linus's Index Review - Realize I need to build a PC and buy a headset - Watch Linus's Oculus Rift S review
After watching the trailer, I immediately went researching VR, and so far it seems that Rift S is the best solution for me due to its portability. I don't have the patience for setting up and adjusting so many things, so I would go with Rift S.
The reason the display looks sharper is due to the LCD screen. Each pixel on an LCD display has 3 subpixels rather than the 2 subpixels of OLED. That's why even the Valve Index looks sharper than the Vive Pro despite having the same resolution.
Saying OLEDs have 2 subpixels that's not entirely accurate either. Most just use an RGBG subpixels layout which means there are twice as mean G pixels as R or B but they count the resolution as the G's so yes, if you do the math on there are twice as many total sub pixels as pixels but it's not quite as simple as that, and the weird subpixel layout means that vertical/horizontal lines aren't as sharp as on an RGB subpixel layout but diagonal lines tend to be better
"80Hz is too choppy" *Laughs in 50Hz DIY headset* Seriously though, this headset seems perfect for me - it's got a bunch of upsides to my original DIY setup (such as inside-out tracking, which will make things much easier to deal with) and the "low" refresh rate of 80Hz... well, lets just say I wasn't joking about using a 50Hz screen... On the upside, I think I might be immune to VR-induced motion sickness! Kinda weird...
@@evolicious Honestly, it ain't as bad as it sounds. It was pretty terrible admittedly, but if you aren't used to proper VR then it worked fine. I'm really glad I'm moving on to a proper headset though - when it comes tomorrow I can FINALLY experience all this stuff the way it's meant to be played!
I still didnt really feel there was enough content on VR to justify the price, so the price of the rift S was perfect for me. I'm too much of a pleb to even notice refresh rate I think, and if the market gets enough games I'm sure I can update eventually in the future. Comparing this to something double the price is a bit strange, I'd wager there are a lot of people like me who would simply never have purchased a VR setup if $1000 headsets were the only ones available.
2:13 No, I've had the Rift S for months and I've also tried a lot of ther Headsets and the Rift S is by far my favorite, then it's the Index because of the price, but overall the Rift S actually has the best tracking after the Index, including both inside out and outside sensor tracking group...
He even says "I reviewed it not long ago, but no - There is no video. I searched last week when i started wondering if i wanted a quest, and i tried again now"
I agree with Linus completely. I've been turned away from Vive demos at conferences because they were recharging their wands. I've never once not been able to play my Rift due to controller charge. I love it.
There are good reasons for one or the other, sadly, few companies do it the proper way. Allow USB-C charging of a removable Li-ion or NiMH pack which when removed, exposes standard AA/AAA battery compartments. That is the ideal way to handle battery packs for portable/removables, but there's a lot of reasons, mostly space-related, why it it's not done like that.
Rechargable batteries are the best. They are available anywhere and if they wear down, you replace them. It's a very durable decision. Not that it matters because the non-detachable and fragile cable will be totally ruined long before any rechargable batteries would have worn out.
@@Cosmitzian Xbox controllers use to do this. But mainly I think it's a safety/legal problem of if there is ever 1 fire on the whole planet with that pack, they could get into a lot of trouble.

I won an auction for $160 AUD($110 USD) for one on eBay. It just arrived the other day, still good condition & frankly I'm really amazed by the technology. I definitely got a bargain. Box, headset, original cable & both controllers. I was hoping that being mildly nearsighted would be a benefit here, like with using my phone inches away from my face just fine(a lot of people with 'superior' vision can't do that), but even at a prescription of only -1.5, I'm struggling with reading text at times.
Yeah I just picked one up for $150USD in November and have been really enjoying it. The frame rate is a bit annoying at times, but being able to pack it & my HTPC up and bring it to friends has been really fun.
@@ronelm2000 I have no idea what "workplace CPUs" means because a CPU is the actual processor and has nothing to do with the way video is output. @@ronelm2000 that is once in a life time find. I looked forever because my old setup only had one HDMI port that I used for the original rift and all the other DP were for my monitors. Thanks!
I bought a Rift S on 17 FEB 21. It worked flawlessly until Oculus released their software update. Three dots of death. Four unsuccessful hours on the chat with Oculus CS. Excuses ranged from incompatible CPUs (then why has it worked up to now?) to low power on USB 3.1 ports (they're powered directly from my 1100W PSU). It is now boxed up ready to be collected by the courier for return. Thankful for 30 day return policies! :)
Linus, I understand you're running a business at the end of the day but I feel the ad spots, plugs for merch, etc have gotten extremely intrusive. Perhaps I should just shut up and pay for Floatplane, though I dunno if the content there is any different. I just worry that as your RUclips content becomes increasingly commercialized, a tipping point may be reached where people are no longer willing to put up with it. I'd be willing to pay into a Patreon or similar if it meant fewer ads for everyone. I currently pay for RUclips Premium, so I have no idea if your videos are monetized- but I'll assume they are. That means you have 1-2 ads for an average video, two sponsor spots, 1-2 merch plugs and 1-2 calls to action per video. Assuming the low end in all cases, that's going to be about one of these things every 3-4 minutes for an average video. The video/ad ratio in that case is no better than broadcast TV, which is not a reality I wish to return to. So, is there some kind of middle ground where viewers can pitch in to benefit everyone? Maybe the bar is too high to clear off of donations, but I'd be interested to know either way.
Their videos are monitized, but the majority of us run adblock, so anything on RUclips is essentially non-profit for LMG. As I understand it, Floatplane has no ad spots, not sure about merch pushing though.
I, for once, already unsub'd when they started to make all content for 10 year old's. All the forced jokes and stupid thumbnails and much more... @@alexasbagel I don't care honestly. I wanted a more dedicated setup anyways. I'll probably get a quest in the future but right now I'm totally okay with having it like this.

Rift S is my first VR HMD and I'm pretty happy with it, especially considering the price. The inside out tracking works well, and has improved greatly even in the time that I have owned it, to the point where I don't even think about it now (switching guns over the shoulder in Pavlov for example). I rent an apartment, so having to attach things to the walls would have been a deal breaker. There were issues earlier with single frame flashes of white static, those have been fixed, and with the exception of No Man's Sky, all games run well on a humble RX580.
Oculus Rifts is a great headset. Price, clarity, comfort all there. Asgards Wrath will see a lot more people discover it, and more quality games will be released. The Oculus headsets are THE consumer headsets.
yup its not even worth paying almost three times as much *350 because in 3 years there will be a Rift 2 with eye tracking and loads of improvements and it will end up being way better than the Index.
There are actually very few games I play in VR, where I have to use the controllers. Some of them are fun, but my main use of VR headsets is complete immersion in simulators, like Elite Dangerous, Warthunder, American Truck Simulator, etc. Where I can setup and place my peripherals like Steering wheel or joystick, precisely where it shows up in game, to completely the immersion feeling of being in the cockpit or cab. For those reasons, the Rift S is absolutely perfect, a nice upgrade in every way that I use it, and cheaper than the original Rift I used to use. 5 stars for me.
Oculus Link is a nice addition, but as someone who has both Quest and Rift S, you're gonna want to stick with the Rift S if you plan on playing for extended periods of time. Rift S is MUCH more comfortable since you dont have 3 hours worth of battery hanging off your face and has a more comfortable design.
If you are not spoiled by the index as Linus is and you do not intend to get full body tracking in the near future than the Rift S is for sure worth it. Project Cars looks so much better than on my old CV 1 Rift. And lots of games cant even use the 120Hz and higer resolution of the Index at max settings cause you need a really beefy PC to run that thing as it is intended to run. That makes it even more expensive. If you dont mind FB having cams in your home because Amazon and Google have a mic setup anyway than go get yourself a nice plug and play VR setup.
Got my Rift S recently and i understand the cons but its all about the cost! i wouldnt have gotten a vr headset if it werent for the cost and a huge portion of people feel that way. Increasing the player base is only going to encourage developers and companies to make more vr games and better headsets.
I think Rift S is an excellent and vfm way to enter the VR world w/o compromising too much. After all in order to appreciate higher end VR headsets like Valve Index or future VR sets you have to start from lower specs. And in all honesty I was thinking that I wouldn't like the experience with Rift S that much when I bought it, but it looks and tracks amazingly.. And there's no way Index that costs more than double the Rift S money offers more than a slightly better experience..
It was propably recorded way ealier but edited or posted later because they wanted to post other vid faster like news have to be posted as fast as possible
So I just bought and tried the Rift S for the first time. First VR experience ever. The lack of IPD adjustment is going to force me to return it, because I'm outside of their asinine "one size fits half of humans" design. I had no idea it was such a problem, and in fact was ignorant to IPD until this point in time. Blurry vision, either in one or both eyes and an extremely small focal point making everything outside of the center of vision distorted. Had no motion sickness inside VR which was strange, but got really sick and my vision was messed up after coming out of VR. Took a couple hours to recover. VR finally became affordable, but it was too good to be true. Thanks Lenovo; shows how a company who has no experience in VR shouldn't be making a successor to a VR headset, let alone the original. Now my only option is what's barred me from getting into VR this entire time: Expensive kits. If I could just use the Valve Index at its $500 pricepoint I would.. but you need $250 base stations and $250 controllers. Absolutely ludicrous. The Cosmos has tracking like the RIft S and hardware IPD adjustment.. but has other issues besides, and costs $300 more. Severely disappointed.
For my own purposes, I don't see much of a compelling reason to exchange my Rift S for a Quest. The Rift S is lighter, has more subpixels, less latency, and a higher refresh rate. Of course, these are minor advantages, but they are more advantages than the quest for me for a few reasons. The main reason being I don't have a huge use for the portability. People say it's for the social factor, but I think it's worse because with a PC VR headset your friends can see your perspective mirrored onto your monitor, while with the Quest they can't even see what you're playing, removing the point of playing it socially. Additionally, I have no reason to remove it from my house except for maybe extended vacations, but if I'm in vacation in a beautiful place, I feel as if being tech free or at least tech limited is better, so I probably wouldn't bring a vr headset. Also the link cable brings the price up to almost $500. If I hadn't purchased a headset would I get the Quest because it has Oculus Link and the portability there for a few rare cases? Maybe, I would consider it. But for my purposes and PC VR users, the Rift S is more compelling and there isn't really a good reason to exchange. Also, I bet the Rift S will go down in price, so it may be a great option for people looking for a good yet affordable PC VR headset. And I can almost garuntee finger tracking will be implemented for the Rift S in the near future. But that's just my two cents.
I bought the rift-s and am extremely happy with it and i waited two year for the price to come down and of course more choice of games to play . $600 US for the first model , was $800 in Aus currency and i got it just a week ago for $570.AU so i saved a couple of hundred and got a better model for my patience . I have bought about 4 games already . I am 52 and played the first games that come out like space invaders , and played at arcades growing up saw every console come and go . Turned to PC's in my 30's and gave up the consoles . The rift-s is fine if you don't want to spend a lot of money and get the VR experience .and has renewed my dying interest in games the last ten years For me , it S..TS on playing a flat screen game I found it easy to install , My PC has no problem with it and all i have to do is connect it and put the headset on oculus does the rest . I find myself turning the sound down but i hate loud sound straight to the ears . My PC specs i7 16gb ram graphics GTX 1060 Most games recommend 1080 and minimum GTX 960
Having an Oculus is so much easier, if I want to plug and play in my office with the PC, or move it to the living room for friends/family I just need to move the PC and bring the headset - with the index etc wouldn't I have to move and re plug the base stations too? Setting up guardian is so simple with the Rift S, and the tracking works exceptionally, only problem is when your hands go behind your back, which isn't too often - and over the shoulder is fine (for grabbing weapons etc)
Yeah totally! I actually love the Rift S' guardian system. Easy to setup, easy to prevent you hurting yourself, easy to prevent breaking stuff, it's just integrated very well.
Nope. Presence does not even start until about 80fps. Most people still get sick around 90fps. 60fps is far below the requirement for VR, which is why the PSVR is such a terrible system that no one likes (interpolated to 120fps).
I'm pretty sure it should be obvious if a $400 VR wouldn't compete a VR that is way beyond its price. I mean, cmon a VR that cost $1,000 would obviously be far more better than a $400, with a better refresh rate or screen resolution. I don't know, just my perspective when it comes to more expensive VR. It's just logical in my opinion, it's like comparing a PC that has low-grade parts to a high-grade parts.
I don't think Linus knows what frame rate is. A lower frame (within reason) rate normally makes graphics processing easier and less prone to errors, as it does not have to process as many frames. If you are getting 'choppy animations" that is not a frame rate issue that is a graphics processing issue, and beat saber is full of graphics processing issues.
Had problems 10 days after purchasing with usb connection issues. Alot of people are having the same problems. But I finally found a fix, plug the USB into an usb-c to usb 3.0 adapter and plug the usb-c into your video card.
the lower resolution display means that it is the only pcvr heatset my pc can run without me getting sick, also (in my experience) i needed to push HARD to take the battery cover off
Yeah for real... I've had my headset since launch, so for over a year now. NOT ONCE have the battery covers ever came off during play... I have no fucking clue what they're doing with their controllers😂I also know quite a few people to have the Rift S as well and as stated, I've never once heard of this being an issue?
I really haven’t had any complaints about his thing at all. If you’re like me and you come from console, the 80hz is barely, barely noticeable. I just started playing pc and 60hz is my tv refresh rate and 80 is literally better. You won’t even notice it’s lower than 90
Not to mention, he said that when you're chillin it's not noticeable but when things heat up in the middle of a game you start to notice... but like, when things heat up in a game (like taking gunfire in onward), are you really gonna sit there and try to focus on how things look? Fuck no, you're gonna get your ass to cover.
Also, most people don't buy multiple VR headsets. If you've never used a Valve Index or Vive for an extended period of time, you won't even be able to tell the difference between 80 and 90hz. A lot of people can't tell 90 from 120, and that's a WAY more significant jump. The fact that it's a VR headset doesn't make it any more of a problem.
I owned one of these, the inside out tracking was a nightmare, i had to reset the borders every single time i played. Then once a facebook account became mandatory i sold it, ive never looked back.
Linus hates it. BUT, Linus isn't broke either, so he can indulge his elitism with much more expensive products, which naturally will cause a bias allowing him to forgive some of the more unacceptable aspects, *cough cough* worse screen resolution ...
Picked up a Lenovo Mixed Reality headset up for £125 new I really can't complain, I have very few issues with it and the screen quality is fantastic, plus the controllers are my favourite with both touch pads and joysticks...
@jvalex18 Your reply demonstrates elitism. The irony. You think that A) It's required to be great to be considered. B) That other products like the Rift S are great, despite having serious flaws that do not exist with even FIRST GEN WMR. You are willing to overlook these flaws, in order to remain favorable towards the more expensive products, whereas you are not willing to overlook the flaws for WMR. Elitism. It's a more expensive product by a brand that has built itself entirely around VR, therefore you are inherently biased to approve, especially after investing significant funds. After all, the disappointment upon purchasing something more expensive will hit much harder than any disappointment for cheaper products. It's in your personal best interest then to remain positive to feel that you got your moneys worth. It's just psychology. It's no different than fashion elitist that look down on cheaper clothing or sunglasses elitist that look down on cheaper sunglasses, despite the quality and functionality not being drastically different. It's like Apple worshipers that insult Android, despite Android phones at half the cost are often times more powerful, but because they lack that luxury and that price tag, they are inferior. Elitism disgusts me and those who indulge in it distinctly lack self-awareness, which I find embarrassing for our species. We should be more introspective in this day and age.
@@netbirth You may have gotten the early models with early software. Have you had WMR in the last year? It's improved significantly. And when you consider the O+, it's one of the best currently on market. And of course, about $600 cheaper. But I am curious, what exactly was shit and what ruined your experience?
Display port is actually advantageous if you're like me and you use dual monitors. I really don't wanna have to unplug one in order to use VR. Overall I'm pretty pleased with my Rift S. I'm a college student and I move between home and school a lot. I can't set up permanent fixtures for lighthouses. The inside out tracking was ingenious and offers a lot to people in similar situations. Not to mention it's comparable at the very least to its competitors at a fraction at the price. Honestly the Rift S is a complete no brainer if you don't have loads of dosh in the bank. I can afford the Index but frankly none of its features are worth it for me. I can spend what I saved by not choosing the Index on VR games and I don't really have any interest in the faster paced ones anyway so the lower refresh rate doesn't make any difference to me
because the computer you can afford probably is 50x the computer of 10 years ago. even if your finances won't change things you see here likely will be affordable to you in a couple years in some form.
I suppose a lot of people don't compare horses with courses when we talk resolution. The Oculus Rift S has 2560 x 1440 pixels, 110 degrees of view, 3,689,400 pixels the valve Index has 2880 x 1600 x130 degrees of view. 4,608,000 pixels If we look at the differences in view area it is about 18.19% . Taking that area off the Valve Index to compare density of pixels between the 2 head sets we see that the Index over the same area as the Rift S has 3,769,804 pixels and the rift has 3,686,400 which over the view area of the Rift S, the Index has 83,404 more pixels or 2.2% better resolution. Sure the Index has better View Area. Higher refresh rate, Better sound but the improvement in actual resolution is marginal and I think the math's shows that. For those who want a sharp picture like Flight simmers etc both are comparable. (except in price). Those of us who look at the difference in resolution and get the Index expecting it to be head and shoulders above the Rift S in sharpness and actual real world resolution may be disappointed.
Not to mention the manufacturing defects of the Index ATM, controllers sticking, and breaking is not appealing to the price of the package, its best to wait on the Index until they fix their product defects.
And the Oculus Rift /s I believe has far nicer controllers. With the resolution difference being so little over the same viewing area it has always amazes me how most reviewers put it down to nicer lenses. Even Linus. (They are nice lenses but that is not going to effect the resolution ) + oculus is still improving the software and the Rift S may have controller free hand tracking shortly. 🤞
@@ProtoPropski QC on the indexes is definitely WAY lower than the rift s, especially accounting for the huge difference in sales volume, with 1 index for every 6 rift s users. And for a 1k$ product, that's just god damn inexcusable.
Considering the Index is over 2 times the price of the Rift S it is perhaps not the savior of VR that Valve would have wanted it to be. Still that being said I am in favour of any competition that will continue to push VR technology and there will always be the fan base that will support their favourite product despite criticism and to be fair the valve has a lot of pluses and improvements Just a little pricey for my money.

Nope me neither, but I have it, and I'm actually pretty happy with. Even impressed considering the mobility provided, tether-less in a big room, even with poorer graphics is really amazing. I've tested other vr headset, and, it's actually an option, even not so expensive considering you need nothing more except a low end smartphone to first configure it.
I saw it on Floatplane, but it is an older video than this one so it's odd that this one came out first. Maybe they are saving the Quest review for the 25th when OC6 starts?

"and a feline companion to help you"
The reason the display looks sharper is due to the LCD screen. Each pixel on an LCD display has 3 subpixels rather than the 2 subpixels of OLED.
That's why even the Valve Index looks sharper than the Vive Pro despite having the same resolution.
2? Did you steal all the blue subpixels to make your fursona?
Saying OLEDs have 2 subpixels that's not entirely accurate either. Most just use an RGBG subpixels layout which means there are twice as mean G pixels as R or B but they count the resolution as the G's so yes, if you do the math on there are twice as many total sub pixels as pixels but it's not quite as simple as that, and the weird subpixel layout means that vertical/horizontal lines aren't as sharp as on an RGB subpixel layout but diagonal lines tend to be better
Nice.

It is what it is.

Jon Ryan apparently Borderlands 2 VR is not that good. Multiplayer doesn’t exist at all.

@@thesmartI No it's not RIP Rift S.

Well, you did a great review just in time to throw it down the toilet, given the recent announcement of Oculus Link.
Literally right before
For my own purposes, I don't see much of a compelling reason to exchange my Rift S for a Quest.
@Lightbringer I've been chatting with many people who own both and the difference is noticeable but not that great.
The rift-s is fine if you don't want to spend a lot of money and get the VR experience .and has renewed my dying interest in games the last ten years
For me , it S..TS on playing a flat screen game
I found it easy to install , My PC has no problem with it and all i have to do is connect it and put the headset on oculus does the rest .
60hz is enough, this is an entry-level device, don't inflate it's price with unnecessary performance demands.
David Schaftenaar low Hz can give people motion sickness very easily on a vr
Nope. Presence does not even start until about 80fps. Most people still get sick around 90fps. 60fps is far below the requirement for VR, which is why the PSVR is such a terrible system that no one likes (interpolated to 120fps).
Facebook now owns Oculus?
$400 for a VR headset?
Now Facebook wants to track your house for only $400. What a bargain!

Lenses dont have a refresh rate
Samus Aran so pay 1100 dollars? If you want the best and you have the money, sure. But don’t complain (linus) about 80 hz on a 400 dollar headset
my Rift has 90Hz... 80Hz on the Rift S would be a downgrade.
ZeroB4NG although i have heard the resolution is much better and the 10 hz downgrade is there, but for many that is not really noticeable.
Then once a facebook account became mandatory i sold it, ive never looked back.
what about the $200 Windows mixed media headset? It's cheaper and works pretty well, I've been enjoying it.
Linus hates it. BUT, Linus isn't broke either, so he can indulge his elitism with much more expensive products, which naturally will cause a bias allowing him to forgive some of the more unacceptable aspects, *cough cough* worse screen resolution ...
Picked up a Lenovo Mixed Reality headset up for £125 new
I really can't complain, I have very few issues with it and the screen quality is fantastic, plus the controllers are my favourite with both touch pads and joysticks...
@jvalex18 Your reply demonstrates elitism. The irony.
You think that
A) It's required to be great to be considered.
The mixed reality default thing was shit, ruined my experience, about half a year after that purchase i bought a valve index. Cant turn back
@@netbirth You may have gotten the early models with early software. Have you had WMR in the last year? It's improved significantly. And when you consider the O+, it's one of the best currently on market. And of course, about $600 cheaper.
But I am curious, what exactly was shit and what ruined your experience?
I swear you haven't reviewed the oculus quest
apparently I have experienced 90hz VR without even knowing it on the oculus rift 4 YEARS AGO

For $400 this beats the valve index by far. I saved $600 for a new Gpu and games I wanted.
I suppose a lot of people don't compare horses with courses when we talk resolution. The Oculus Rift S has 2560 x 1440 pixels, 110 degrees of view, 3,689,400 pixels the valve Index has 2880 x 1600 x130 degrees of view.
4,608,000 pixels
If we look at the differences in view area it is about 18.19% .
