  • We put our hands inside the HaptX virtual reality gloves that use finely tuned pneumatics to convey a striking sense of touch with VR content. HaptX's CEO Jake Rubin chats with us to talk about the challenges of convincing haptics for VR and how their technology works. It's unlike any haptics solution we've used so far!

hmm. Didn't MIT create a material that unfolds when current is passed through it?
If so instead of using loud clunky air to deform the lining -you could use low currents.
This would also decrease size required and eliminate the need for attachments.

    • @Red_Bastion

It could also be that the material doesn't unfold with the force required to fit their needs.

They should think about adding bladders to the backs of the fingers to provide resistance to opening the fingers like when you put your hands into mud or sludge. Full immersion. And think of the possibilities for hazardous environment remote operations and walking loaders like in Aliens. The future looks mechanical and I'm loving it.

Have them detect pressure in real life, and then connect to a normal set of actuators somewhere else on the body so that someone with a prosthesis can still feel touch. (obviously the sensation of touch would be odd, i.e. pressing with your finger would be felt on your inner arm etc.)

I suspect that they could reduce the space between bubbles a bit. And I think that it would benefit the experience, too. I imagine they could do this by using accordion type bubbles, to reduce the amount of space needed on the edges, to allow the travel distance that they're aiming for with the bubbles. Shouldn't need a lot of folds in the accordioned portion; one, maybe two. And it might be good to allow it to form a rounded shape when expanded, instead of relying on the folds entirely, if they intend to leave the bubble density as low as they have it.
I think it could use a higher resolution on the fingertips, as we do have a higher density of nerve endings there. Especially considering that people can read braille, and distinguish between the different combinations of tiny bumps. I don't know what the entire inside of the gloves look like, so I don't know if they do this, but… Using a different density for the bubbles, in different parts of the hand, based on the actual density of nerve endings present, would seem like a good idea to me.
Another thing I wonder about, is hot and cold… A way to rapidly heat or cool areas of the hand, within safety tolerances, would only add to the realism. It'll probably be a headache to get to work in practice, though. It was the mention of the virtual rain on the hands, that got me thinking about hot and cold, because surely, the lack of temperature change broke immersion a little.

Easy fix for the bubbles feeling separate, add a layer that when two bubbles rise its connected between the 2 highest points of the bubble creating a solid area of pressure. As for force feedback on arms you can use passive locking in a way that you can always pull your arms back and bend them and it never bends your arms or pulls them for you, merely stops you from pushing your arm a certain distance from, let's say a strap on your shoulder, or bending your elbow when an object is against your forearm. Then maybe with legs all you really need is a pressur pads on the sides of your feet to maybe simulate the contact of kicking since gravity and distance is involved with leg motion. A pad that goes maybe inside the sides if your shoe that when you kick a certain distance you feel the pressure to know the kick has landed, same with shin. As for force of Kick it's easier to have a set reaction in the game to keep design simple. Then you have functional arm stopping systems, leg sensory, and all that's needed may be excesorries like vest with magazine pouches or armor that have a chip that loads the measurements and rendering around the avatar of your measurements so you simulate the vest in real life. Load a backpack with pouches for each systems hardware and software once it's made into a compact fit, and then there's the making a really awesome open world zombie survival vr game. The hardest part is getting the textile features. Once you have a system for that the rest is just duplication and measurements for the specific limbs, which mostly don't require any sensory except hands, side of feet and maybe a bit of the arms or torso.maybe make a sensor that vibrates letting you know your arms or legs or back is close to hitting a wall or object in real life.make it to where the walking in the game is done by lifting knees without extension of legs and extension within certain speed is a kick, or held up then pushed out could be more of a push with your leg that stops the object without pushing it away until a quick extension after leg is raised, I hope someone sees this comment Because the zombie apocalypse is way easier than real life

Is it going to be used for porn? Absolutely. Is that going to be the only use? Absolutely not. I don't really understand what you're concerned about. You speak as though they'd have to design the gloves specifically for x-rated content and that makes no sense. They are developing a tool for physical feedback and it will be up to software developers to provide the experiences that will use that tool. You'll get a lot of software both in and out of the category in question, just as you do with the tools of the internet and PC.

These guys should use similar tech to make their glove that bmw used on their new concept car. Can’t remember the name but it’s something like alive technology or similar.
The fender bends with the tires. Stretching and contracting. So if they used something like that for the gloves they could follow your motion but also lock up to imitate an object.
E.g. lock in a tube shape for a staff or sword grip, add a slight angle for a gun grip. Lock in round shapes for grenades and food objects like fruits or even drink cups.
I don’t know how you could imitate legitimate touch. Like touch a table and the glove stops your arm from pushing through where it would be. Because no matter how accurate the system is a giving these sensations, if the object isn’t really there you will always be able to ‘move through it’ in a way.
My example would be opening a door. Push the door and it opens. But if you moved your arm and hand faster than the game can open the door, your sensation would be off and would break immersion instantly.
Love watching these, gives me so much hype for the future of games. If the companies don’t ruin gaming before VR becomes more reliable at least hahaha🤣
