Ep. 5: Catching YELLOWTAIL OFF SHARKS with Surface Irons!

Cedros Island is one of my favorite places to visit for so many different reasons, but one of the biggest reasons I'm always excited to come back is for the chance at seeing this natural phenomenon!
I have had the privilege of seeing this on 4 separate days now!
There are 2 theories on what's happening here. One being that the yellowtail will rub up against the sharks rough body to knock off sea lice. The other is that they head butt the yellowtail to get it to cough up food, and the yellowtail take it.
I personally think it is that the yellowtail are such opportunistic predators on the food chain, that they will do this for an easy meal.
Either way, it is the coolest way I have ever caught fish in my life!

I got this fishing book from 1962 says A dozen or more yellowtails will find a shark , usually a blue shark and then appear to attack the shark from all sides nudging pulling at its fins, biting and bumping it . But appearances are deceiving , The yellowtails , are only removing external parasites from the shark's body . And is a good time to cast a lure near the yellowtails. Love your videos

I have heard this theory as well, but it’s very hard for me to lean one way or the other because with a properly placed jig near the head of the shark is almost a guarantee hook up.
So it could be both! One that they are mainly trying to remove parasites, and two that additionally get an easy meal if it results in the shark coughing up food
