    Thank you for your videos they have saved me many times.
    I drive Volvo 850 from 1993. Very happy with the car, therefore I decided to buy a car like from -95 who have some problems. An older woman wants to sell it because the car's brakes need some "love" I will certainly ask you about a few things that I do not find in your "the Library of" the videos you have uploaded to RUclips.

    Great video Robert. It really comes down to time and knowledge. These cars are aging and inevitably things are going to need attention. My '95 with just 93k miles keeps me busy chasing little things (but runs reliably and strong! I would drive it to the moon!). The upside to their age is that they can be bought very inexpensively...just have a good mechanic or be prepared to watch Robert videos for hours and hours! LOL

    Thank you for taking the time to do this detailed explanation of your process. When I bought my 98 V70 T5, off of so done on the forums, I paid more than blue book for it based on the peace of mind I was getting knowing the track record of servicing that had gone into it just by looking at the sellers' posting history on the forums.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  9 лет назад

      VictorSinclair That does mean a lot. We have to remember that "blue book" is an average. Lot's of cars sell for more, some for less. The thing is, you don't want to pay more for a car that has NOT been maintained.

      I just bought my 17 year old son a base model '99 S70, with leather, for $3800 (way over book value) and everybody said I'm insane. It's got 60k on it, a one owner car, always garaged, mint condition, inside and out, with a service history and a new throttle body. It's the best purchase I've ever made for peace of mind.

    Thanks for sharing. I've been keeping an eye out for a green 1998 S70 T5 for my nephew and it's crazy the prices I see on Craigslist. Haven't seen one with the options I want but people are asking for $3000 or more for even the non-turbos here. Maybe you're right and I should not be afraid of the initial price. Doing your own repairs on your car and home are the only way to go. It's also the most satisfying!!

    I have bought and mostly DIY-serviced all of the more than 10 Volvo wagons that I have owned since buying my first 1972 Volvo 145 wagon back in early 1982. A Volvo has always been my first choice when looking for a new car too even now. I currently own three, a 1998 V70 GLT and 1998 V90 and a 1996 Volvo 960 wagon. Before buying my first Volvo in 1980, I researched and read everything I could find about the company and that was before personal computers and the internet was available. It was that information that made me an almost exclusive Volvo buyer. I have owned other cars but a Volvo has always been one of them. I have my eyes on the new V90 and have an invite to test drive at a local dealer here in Arizona. Keep up the good work, man.

    I've been looking at a 98 s70 and watching a couple of your videos. This car needs work and it is with the second owner on Craigslist. They want 500 obo for it and say something like it has a fuel ratio or bad compression. Your videos are very informative and concise, which is very helpful in my decision. The fact that you like these vehicles and share your knowledge is truly awesome and I am very appreciative, thank you. This video breaks down what you really need to look for in any vehicle purchase period let alone Volvo's. I was torn with a 94 subaru legacy s.w. and this 98 volvo, but I will check out the volvo first to make my final decision.

    Robert, this is an excellent video. You've outlined the predicament with old car repair & rehab clearly. This is an informative buying guide; really gives the heads up on what is out of reach and what is reasonable for a DIY'er. I have a '97 850 and a '04 S60 and I have watched your videos when looking to make repairs on those Volvo cars. Your comments on the life expectancy of the cars (500K miles, etc.) reminds me of the time a friend of mine called me and was celebrating his ('78?) Volvo wagon turning 300K after turning laps on a frozen lake in Wisconsin. Good work. I'll be looking in often.

When I first came to look at thee car there was no battery but after putting in a battery the car started but then quit after a few seconds unless I was accelerating after playing around a bit in the engine with the air intake we got the car running and was able to drive it home (70 miles) smoothly. I bought this car for $350 and plan on servicing it (timing belt, pcv, coolant flush, heater core etc.) using your videos .

    Robert, your exactly right when it comes to talking people down on there price. They can ask anything they want but your a great mechanic and you know what it's worth to you. My buddy looked at a Honda Accord going for $3000.00 a few years back He had it looked at by his mechanic and it needed over $1000.00 in new work. He showed the the paper work from the mechanic offered a $1500.00 the guy sold him the car. He still has the car today. Honda and Toyota

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 лет назад

      +Arthur Smith The last Honda Accord I had, I picked up from a dealer. I'd go to the new car shops, go look at yesterday's trade in, ask for the key, start and car, and make an offer. Worked great for me. The new car shops are not going to keep a 10 year old car with 150,000+ miles on it. They just dump them at auctions or to used car dealers.

      Enrique Vazquez I also bought an 03 S60 this year, and the cluster stopped working a couple of months later. This problem is fairly notorious on this era S60 and V70, it would seem. I intend to ship the cluster in for refurbishment, which costs about $400 and comes with guarantee. Xemodex, from Canada I think, offers this service and their website supplies a lot of information thereto. I am aware, from an internet thread, of a Taunton, MA company also specializing in these instrument clusters, but I don't remember their name just now. For now, I top off my fuel tank often(I love the Volvo's large gas tank btw) and reckon speed by GPS.

      Timing belt is easy 4 hour job. Lots of stuff to pull off. The serp belt is one of the things you have to remove so you might as well replace it too. I did one on a dodge decrepit and it was less than 2 hours. Not as easy on a sideways engine like this.

    Best thing I ever did when I got my 07 VR was get a windows 7 pro laptop and VIDA DICE (about $300). Already paid for itself when I had a stalling at lights/stutter and found the fuel pressure sensor had failed. 50 dollar part and half hour of my time. Done.
    It really is easier than trying to decipher OBDII codes for these cars.
    Good video for those wanting to get a good Volvo.

    Robert, Great video. It was very concise and thorough. Two things I would add are elbows,elbows & elbows. Once they crack on the vacuum hoses, mysterious things happen. Secondly, the B cable from the battery to the starter can lose conductive capacity. I replaced a battery and an alternator, when I probably only needed to replace the B cable. Keep up the good work. You really help me with my 97 850 GLT.

    I've purchased my 1st car, a volvo850 , when I came across your videos I started learning , and still am learning, thank you for all the knowledge....the warning lights were on indicating it needed oil, I was afraid at what it might of cost for a tune up, luckily it came with oil ,I put in a quart cause it was making like a fan hitting something sound, after I put in the oil that sounds went away, and the oil light along with service light went off on my driver display , what a relief...I like to think that your videos helped me to want to learn how to fix things myself, thanks Robert and god bless you...

    Robert: I echo your comments, and THANK YOU. I am a 76 year old Harvard grad, have owned 28 Volvo's, on average paid $500 for each, got 100,000 safe and worry free miles and sold each for a profit. I do much of my own word, often use your guide for things I can't figure. Now own 99 V70R for my wife;s car and smile about your respect for them... Timing belts scare me. I found reputable shop, I bring them hot coffee in mornings, cold six-pack on Friday afternoon and that resulted in $375 for a timing belt they quoted at $650! How often do you see bill reduced??? Everyone who see's your video can lead a premium quality life by avoiding flashy fashion of priced new cars with back breaking payments, and glide through life surrounded by safe, secure, comfort, economy and profit by following your suggestion. Thanks for all you do for us!! PS: I write for the Silver Bullet, a Lone Ranger publication so smile at your car's name!!!!

    Pretty much nails advice on how to approach purchasing a car that you are prepared to repair yourself in order to achieve the most economical solution. However, I don't see the value in paying for full coverage insurance on cars with limited replacement value.Excellent video. Thanks, Robert.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 лет назад

      +Brad Grau they all have limited replacement value. One was totaled and I got a check large enough to fix the car and buy another one. Another one got totaled and the check was 4 times what I paid for the car. Works fine for me.

    I bought a 1993 850 5 Speed N/A for 1,250 in 2010. It has had a rear main leak, albeit slow, since I owned the car! Of course I never let the oil get low, but I have personally put 200,000 plus on it and it is still as strong as a rock! However, I bought a 2000 V70 July of 2015 with 211,000 on it for 1,500 and it isn't quite as well built. Still, I think I have gotten my money's worth out of both! I will never go to another make of car again! And your video's have helped me so much, especially since I am a single mother who thankfully is mechanically inclined! If your travels ever take you in the direction of the Louisville area, please let me know! I would love to be able pay you back!
