Thanks to you I have gained the confidence to purchase and maintain a 1993 Volvo 850 sedan (110k miles, belonged to a doctor) that is in way better shape than my 2009 Mitsubishi Colt. I was so relieved when it passed the glove test, AC blows ice cold, too. Thank you very much, Sir!
I just bought a 2000 s70 awd. 179k. I now know what to do next, and I will. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It's very kind of you to share your expertise in volvo maintenance. Thank you very much 👍
Top man Robert. I own a 2000 First gen V70 (90000 miles) I drive it in Liverpool England. I have a clean example and am making every effort to keep it that way. I am newish to D.I.Y mechanics. So when ever I need to do a job I end up looking at your how to videos. I have done quiet a few jobs now under you tutorial wing. Just had my dash out to check the mount tabs as I have a severe squeak and cracking noise going on. The mounts were all fine but it turns out the last windscreen replacement I had done left the screen too close to the front lip of the dash so thats where the noises were originating from. So a good lashing of sticky beutal tape on there sorted the problem. Your tutorial made it possible. Carry on the good work. Every video you make on the p80's makes my life easier. Thanks m8
Have had my 1998 V70R AWD, for 5 years. Always good to check procedures and learn, even though belts, hoses and ignition components were replaced new on purchase. The PCV system blow-back check with glove was new to me. It proved to be negative but good to know the work around. Thanks again.
Hey Rob! Blessings to you man! Thanks so much for your videos. I just purchased a 1999 S70 with 270k on the clock for $400 from the original owner! I owned a 1994 850 about 5 years ago that had over 200k miles so I wasn't intimidated by miles. Watched your video on what to check for and everything you mention checked out. Some typical issues like power steering fluid leak (I think its from a seal on the rack) and possible ABS module failure. I will be investigating, but wanted to let you know I appreciate you man.
I know im asking randomly but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot my password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Hayden Enrique Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Robert you're right on about the timing belt. My work mechanic warned me about that and I ignored it. Almost lost my engine. Sure appreciate your knowledge. I have 245m on mine. Owned it for 7 years. Thanks again for your help and insite.
I just bought my first 98 v70 glt a couple of months back. And I'm starting to see how under serviced the previous owners had for it. If it wasn't for your videos I would be lost. Thanks so much you are awesome!
Thank you very much for this video! I will be looking on a volvo v70, generation one with a T5 engine tomorrow with 40k miles (european) and this video has helped me a lot, along with your other on what to look for before purchase. Again, thanks a lot! I have taken so many notes!
Thank you very much, Robert! I'm just about to buy my first 2000 V70 270.000Km and this and your other video Tipps on what to keep an eye on helped me a lot! :-))))
Awesome video! Just grabbed one of these in really good shape for $1000 bucks. First thing I am doing is replacing the PCV system and of course watching some of your other videos.
Andrew Oliver The first one I purchased was new in '87. I put more than 400,000 miles on that car. Only had to have it towed once after an accident with the fuel tank. The car cost me $176 per year (excluding only gas). It drove great even after 17 years. Solid cars.
Just bought an 06 s60 AWD and now the check engine light came on after only driving 50 miles. OBD code reads P0442 evap leak (small leak). Thats the only code. Everything else was good. Had original gas cap on so I replaced that. I'm hoping it is just that. I will b driving a lot tomorrow to see if light goes off. But now that I watched some of ur vids, I'll b checking out a lot more things on the car. Thank u so much for these vids!!!
I hope you used a Volvo gas cap? I usually just replace the seal on the Volvo cap. Probably has a vacuum leak, you'll need to have a Volvo mechanic smoke it.
Thanks Robert. I have an 01 C70 for daughter. Beautiful car and well worth some effort to keep it running. Really appreciate your guides and pro-active ideas. You have me enthused to get to work and stay ahead of problems. Matt Victoria Australia.
It's nice to see that the heater core is not so hard to access on the Volvo. ( I own a 1990 240 DL Gold Volvo Wagon, previously owned a 1987 Grey Volvo Wagon.)Never changed a heater core though... Right now, my issues are a rotting engine crossmember ( which I am still assessing), and a slack kickback cable that does not return properly. Hoping to replace that cable within the next two weeks...I bought the cable and a transmission pan gasket and filters in a kit...No, I am not driving it unless it is to repair it...I will drive it locally under 40 mph.....After the kick down cable is all set I will start looking into the pcv system.. liked you test! My current volvo has about 251k miles on it..
Matt Woods When I finally found it I decided to do it more than the smoking dip stick. When I purchased my car, the system was clogged but the dip stick did NOT smoke.
I've been working on my neighbor's V70 AWD. It was almost dead when she bought it. I've been nursing it back to health. I haven't tried the glove test yet but I got it running better by tightening the battery cable connections and replacing the spark plugs and the #5 bad coil. I still have a lot of work to do..like replacing the timing belt...Thanks for your video, it really made a difference! Matt Woods
Hey Robert, thank you for all you do to inform the uninformed DIY'ER. I JUST BOUGHT A 850 R I GET IT THIS FRIDAY . WHOO HOO. ILL RECER TO THE PRE PURCHASE VIDEO FOR TIPS ..THX ROBERT.
Hi Robert DIY, I purchased my FIRST Volvo in April, has 183,000 miles, engine is good, and body is solid. I had the timing belt replaced LAST THURSDAY!! I feel good!! Is the heater core in the same location on the Volvo XC70 wagon 2001 to 2007??). Am following your recommendations to the TEE. (LOVE your glove test!!). The more I watch your videos (this is my third video of yours, the more I understand that you are a Master Volvo Mechanic. THANK you for sharing your vast knowledge!!
Robert is it ok if the heater core has been bypassed? I have a 02 C70 I have a scan gauge hooked up if im easy on it it never reads more than 200 degrees but ocasionaly it jumps up to 220 and then the fan cuts on and brings it back down
Hi Robert, thank you for all your videos. I would like to add a remark on the cooling heater core issue. You have modified the hoses to the heatercore, great idea, i will do this also. Because the connection trough the firewall is plastic, mine gave way and overheated the car like you mentioned. If the car cuts out for a second after hitting a bump or something, it is likely the gaspedal sensor. This happend to me. Also cheap fix. Thanks again for al your information! Volvo 855 2.5 20v "93
Ok, thank you for your reply. I must say i dont think it's a bad idea, it is a weak and very hard to check point in the system though. It might be the end of my engine because of it. But the modification will entirely be on me! 👍
P.s. to my past post. My heater core did go poop. I stated to tear my dash apart then went online and saw how easy it is to change. What a mess it made on my carpets.
Loads of excellent advice robert :-), handy for the buyer to know if they are buying a pig in a poke. To someone like me (not a car owner) it sounds daunting, so many things to check and possibly replace, but i suppose a list is the way if you have a foggy brain like me lol, and once its done then there are less chance for a nasty supprise.
super helpful, thanks. also i must say that the videos you produce are put together very well. i work in video and know its not easy. the effort shows.
lurkbob I have owned 3 or 4 960's. In my opinion, they are the best cars that Volvo ever built. Not sure much for low maintenance, but for the blend of usefulness and lower maintenance than the other white block, FWD cars. I like the '95 - '98 models better than the '93 & '94 models.
hey...i´m from germany and watched a lot of your videos. i bought a volvo v70-I, build in 1998, 2.4 turbo, i think about 180.000miles (210.000km) 2 months ago. i would like to use your tutorials for me as well.i´ll definatly have to buy some tools. thank you very much for your time to make these tutorials!
Great video again Robert! Thanks! If someone can cook one of these engines, that owner surly be an idiot. There is a warning light about "cooling water level" in the front of the owner eyes... Btw, I cleaned the PCV system, and the carter gas still coming out. The bottom hole on the engine (near the pcv box) almost completly sealed with rock hard shit... the situation became a lot better after cleaning, but some smoke still coming out.
Nagy Sandor And as I see you have a T5? Cool :) Search for RIP (reverse intercooler pipeing) for 850's. Very simple modification, and a lot can be gained with it.
Hi Robert, thank you very much for this very informative video! Concerning the heater core: In case of a failure, wouldn't I realize an increase in the cooling water temperature in the dashboard?
I wish I had seen this video before I brought mine as there are a lot of tips and hints that would prevent buying a lemon. My car by the way passed these tests LOL
The best information out there on Volvo.Hello, I have a problem with front wiper blades not seating right on the front windshield & headlights. Is this any indication there's another issue?
how do you turn on the wipers on the headlights? bought an 850 a couple months ago. can't figure the wipers out, still have to go through all those blend doors too. hot air on driver side, cold air on passenger and can't control where either blows to.
Hey Robert... must the car be warm to do glove test on PCV system ?... i crank my car cold ( 88° outside so warm day ) and did glove test and glove inflated... is test correct should I wait till temp rise to normal for engine
Thanks a million Robert... I just bought my first Volvo, a 2004 XC70 with 200k miles, interior leather has No reaps and trans shifts good... only oil leak along turbo tubing pipes... I haven't investigated that problem yet
Hey Robert! We've put 4,000 miles our our 98' Volvo S70 so far since November. We replaced the entire PCV system and that fixed the pressure in the top of the engine so it is sucking now instead of blowing (your glove test is great!). However, we discovered that the engine is consuming about 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles. It runs great even though it has 359,000 miles! Do you recommend an oil additive to help "rejuvenate" the piston rings or valve seals? Or any other advice?
robert, thanks...i see a siver bar across your engine, behind the oil filler cap...what is it?...i'm on my third volvo and have not seen it on the other two...of course the current one is without it too...
Robert this was very helpful! I took notes and saved your video! I have an 98 S70 with 41500 on it! Ive saved some money & will be taking it to a local garage with a good reputation! As I’ve written prior I have a temp sensor to have replaced and also I will have them check all your recommendations! A few questions I have are ABS light pops on and off and will seem a little loose in braking! Recently the SRS light popped on? Also I plan on fixing the problems but I’ve seen a few videos you’ve done about issues! Any advice would be appreciated! I love the car and want to keep it running properly! Noting I’m not a handyman but am very capable! 56 & eager to learn about my car!!!
Robert DIY It’s tough cause convenience & cost is important when comes to garage to me but I also like your view on Volvo parts on certain things! I appreciate you getting back! I will keep watching your videos take your advice and work with it! I will have them check the hoses etc. and keep all your recommendations in kind when having it serviced! The low miles are such a benefit and helped me decide on the purchase!
Hi Robert! Love your channel! Quick help. Used to. Be a Volvo techin another life (only 6mos) and I can't remember what causes this issue: roll either front window down and no probs. Up they go almost all the way and then act as if there is a hand sensor that is faulty and "thinks" there is a hand/object in the way. Question is this: shall I replace the switches or pull fuses and recalibrate? THANK YOU
Robert: Thank you so much for your channel. I've owned 5 Volvos and do more and more of the work myself - much to the help of your channel. I have a question though-the second cupholder on my 98 v70 wagon fell out, it can be replaced I just can't figure it out. (I have it - it's the one in the rear) Any ideas? Thanks, Jen Santana
That's an awesome video. Thanks. Robert, what's a fair price for a 2000 s70 (136k miles) that has not had a timing belt replaced? There's one in my neighborhood for $1,800.
Hello Robert I saw that the gloves you installed in oil filler blown away instead of sucking in. Could you give me that link? I'm afraid that my Volvo 850 GLT 1995, automatic transmission has same situation? What is the cause of smoke coming out from oil deep stick? Could you give me an advise? Thanks a lot!
You said the heater core can leak down under the carpet. What leaks out of it? I just bought a 98 V70 and 2 days later realized the carpet on the driver side in the front and back seat, is saturated. Would that be water or oil or lubricant that leaked from the old heater core? I do have documentation that the heater core was replaced 2 months ago. Could the carpet have been wet under the vinyl mat for 2 months?
Denise Ezzell COOLANT, main cause for engine overheats causing these cars to go to the bone yard. And yes it could still be wet from a heater core incident months earlier. Check carefully for a bad head gasket. - ruclips.net/video/jsxPXltMFOc/видео.html
I love my Country Couch. Drives like a Couch , built like a tank, fold the back seat down and sleep in the back for camping without a tent. I also use my XC70 for prospecting trips.
Hey Robert, I really enjoy your excellent videos, thank you. You have helped my family for years with repairs. I've had other Volvos for years, but I currently have a 2005 V70R and a 2006 S60R. They are still similar to the 850 and S70 that I've had. My 06' S60R had 10k miles when I bought it in 2007, now about 48k miles. This is the only Volvo that I've had that has had any transmission problems, it's been shifting very hard under full acceleration for a few thousand miles now, otherwise, it drives normally. I had a dealer check it out a couple of years ago, recommended a new transmission. I then had an independent Volvo shop flush the transmission, with no help. Do you have any ideas before replacing or having a shop repair this transmission? This problem transmission is a 6 speed, new in 06'. The V70R has a 5 speed with 128k miles and no problem. Another annoying issue that the S60 has is a weak radio signal, do you know where to find the antenna amplifier in this car?
Thank you for the fast reply. The shifts are so hard that all 4 tires will chirp. I'm sure that it will break something. I'll check the transmission mounts, is that the same thing, is the transmission torque mount internal, between the engine and transmission?
robert have you ever seen an AC compressor clutch NOT disengage? My AC system froze up and then my battery kept draining because the clutch wouldn't disengaged. The clutch is grounded and has a positive switch controlled by the pressure switch right before the firewall. I had to run a new wire from the pressure switch to the compressor to get it to work properly although I think its caused the Compressor to cycle even when the HVAC unit is turned off unless the AC switch is on off and not auto, That last part could be my imagination. Anyway it would seem that wire would have had to short to positive not ground. Really weird.
Benjamin Bartlein Not specifically. I believe they all work. I noticed the difference immediately, mainly because I corner hard going on and off the freeway. I found that one on a car I saved from the crusher.
Hello, i own a 850 GLT 1992 from Sweden, I was looking for the pcv and I don’t seem to have this hose going over the cylinder head past the oil cap. Do you know why I don’t have this? Is it something with the age of the car or do I not have pcv
Also, I do have smoke coming out of the tiny tube where the oil stick is when the car is running. so you said that means my pcv system needs to be replaced or serviced?
Robert DIY And I love your videos. You are obviously very knowledgeable about Volvos. Glad I have someone that I can learn from. I love the car, just want to make sure I get it in the best shape and take care of it.
Hello Robert ..I had a problem today in the breaker's yard ..Unable to remove the airbag from a 2003 Volvo S60 which has a beautiful wooden steering wheel ..too scared to use a crow bar...what size torx screws secure the airbag ? ...thank you friend
Just watched your video Robert ..you used a T30 to release airbag ..another youtube video S60 airbag removal suggests it's a small flat screw driver to dislodge the spring mechanism ..the airbag I was working on yesterday is loose as if someone has been in before me ..my T27 T30 T40 did not seem to engage with the screws ..cheers
I have a 02 v70 cross country. Any special tips or tricks to getting the front driver's side cv axle out? It seems to be stuck in the transmission pretty good and I'm afraid I'm going to damage the transmission case. I was using a pry bar and a ball joint fork trying to get it out. Thanks!
I've tried that too. I've seen in other videos that people are using slide hammers attached to the inboard joint in some manner and just pounding them out. I'm going to try that next weekend.
Hi there, I'm in dire need of a radiator for my 1998 V70 GLT. I live here in Albuquerque like you I met you at the U pull it a couple weeks ago wanted to know if you have one for sale.
Hi Robert, been enjoying your videos. What's your opinion of 2002+ V70s? I will likely buy a 2002 V70 AWD on Friday. My biggest concern is failing transmissions, the one thing I don't want to repair myself.
I really don't have any first hand experience on the post '98 cars. I read a lot of complaints about the '01 - '03 cars, mainly tranny issues. Other than that, it's a Ford product.
Hi Robert, I have a 99 s70 AWD 2.4. I want to add a catch can to bypass the oil seperator/flametrap so i don't have to tear apart my intake. right now i have a pcv valve connected to my dipstick tube to release excess pressure. If i run a hose from the top of the crank case to the can, and cap the line going to the clogged trap, will that work and keep condensation out of my engine and prevent my rear main and other oil related seals from blowing? Also would I have to run a vacuum line to the can?
+Jonny Raige man, I have no idea. I if you watch my channel and see my videos, you have seen me pull countless intake manifolds. I have no knowledge of bypassing the system. The job takes about 3 hours, which is probably less time than trying to hack around it.
Hello Robert, I have watched your videos for quite some time now repairing my son's 1997 850 AND for research. They have been very helpful. We have just purchased a 1999 V70 XC AWD to replace the 850. I see you own one as well. Ours is not a turbo. I have a question. We have come upon a problem with the transmissions shifting. I have found out that there may be some software updates available, however it is also my understanding that the problem could be the valve body, a $1600 repair at the local Volvo shop. Can you give me some feedback on this issue? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
+Patrick Lacy I doubt that the '99 transmission has any software that can be updated. You need to get to a Volvo shop to have the codes read. Is it slipping?
+Robert DIY The car is shifting hard into reverse and seems to be stuck in a lower gear with the upshift arrow flashing and the check engine light suddenly coming on. I have found that the cause of the reverse issue may be because there is no trans fluid showing on the stick. We're going to drain the fluid and replace it with what;s recommended (dextron). Is there an additive we should use as well to your knowledge?
I have found through investigation that there is a faulty sensor. This is in the valve body. And yes it is leaking a little as it appears to have already been apart once. So who knows at this point. I have found a repair shop that will do the job for $1600
I got a 2004 Volvo C70 convertible with a 2.3 when it cranks up it takes a 3 or 4 times to spend over and then sometimes it will backfire but it won't crank but then I turn it back Nishan off turn it back on and spend it over and it cranks up I'm thinking it's the cam sensor and it's got a rough idling I seen a bunch of your videos and stuff like that and that's where I'm coming back to the cam sensor can you give me your opinion on that I appreciate it and thank you for doing your videos and stuff like that because if it wasn't for you videos I wouldn't have been able to have to work it out done on this car I replace the motor in it I had overheating problem in Lost compression between two three and four I put a new motor in it and then I've been working on it here and there please give me your information on the idle
Robert how you doing today number one I got a 2004 Volvo C70 I put the key in the ignition and it acts like it wants to crank the fires then that the last time it doesn't it don't spend over and it will not crank I replaced the cam sensor replace the crank sensor I got fuel I tried to reset the throttle by pumping the gas five times Within mission on then turn it off wait 7 seconds and turn it back on hold it down for the light was supposed to stay on but it's goes off and it will not crank can you give me any information please give me an idea where I need to go on getting this car fixed
Hi Rob, I have a 1997 Volvo 850 Turbo that's having some trouble starting. About a year ago when my fuel pump failed I had a similar, rough, shaking startup. Replaced the front O2 sensor, MAF and coolant temp sensor but still I'm having a rough start and a CEL saying that the car is running rich. My mechanic and I are both stumped on what the issue could be. Any ideas?
Hi Robert, I discovered you in trying to fix my car. I have a 1993 volvo 940 turbo station wagon. The car works fine in the morning when I go to work but in the afternoon when I go home the car tend to dye off at every stop or light, the tach and turbo needle shakes and if I don't step on the gas and get it to at least 1000 rpms it dies. I have replace the mass air flow, the oxygen sensor and ultimately the fuel pump relay and the Noise Suppression Relay. I have use Lucas injection cleaner in the gas and still does the same thing. Do you have any advice or ideas. please help. Mario
Hey Robert, recently my 1998 volvo s70 started leaking coolant in a rapid manor, the leak appears to come from where the lower radiator hose connects to the metal pipe on drivers side of engine, due to angle I cant tell if its the top of the hose leaking or the engine, do you know if this could be a water-pump issue? If not what else, thanks
I'm just trying to learn Dr Robert go easy....I love your videos ! I am getting a Volvo V70 2.5t 2004 and the service bill from when it had 100k miles on it says all drive belts replaced and the job cost over 400 so I assumed that was a timing belt. I most likely will change the belt and use your videos as a guide! Do you have any thoughts on the 2004 V70?
Robert, or anyone. My volvo is currently running a steady tick high on the coolant temps. Do you believe it is my heater core? I have a new thermostat to try but I also recently replaced the water pump and radiator. Kinda at a loss...
@@RobertDIY oh duh right, it's a 98 volvo v70 awd in pretty bad shape lot of routine maintenance has been ignored. I'm going through it piece by piece trying to get it in shape.
Hi Robert....I want to buy a Volvo wagon.....what do you think which one........ ...98 v70xc non turbo 4wd ,96 850 turbo fwd or 01 v70 4wd ..all running good & maintained all same price
The 96 I like too as it's clean...lots of receipts...full tune up,timing & heater core done,no check engine on. Just driver seat worn alittle. Plus it has 4 brand new tires.
I was confused..but your videos & advice is greatly appreciated..I'm sure to send you a donation from the bottom of my heart after the deal is done...thanks again ..also I sent you an email to helper but not sure you even seen it
hello Robert, my girlfriend bought a 2000 volvo s60 I believe, it did not come with owners manuel, the interior lights won't turn off there are 4 total one on each rear door and 1 on the front interior quarter panel on both. sides driver and passenger, where is the button that controls those lights ?
Can you please tell me what the red light at the top end of the temperature gauge is for? The owner's manual mentions it and directs me to pages that do not mention it. Could it be gearbox overheat?
It's one of these you are talking about here, specifically an 850 2.5 20v CD auto wagon. There is a red light in the "hot" region of the temp. gauge that comes on, but the temperature reads normal by the needle.
Pictures of it aren't easy to find, I t must only have been used for a short time, mine is a '95. You can see it in this picture: pictures.dealer.com/r/ramseypreowned/0900/f0e33e9d0a0e0ac930fa7e2befac4fd1.jpg
Rob quick question when I ever I turn my heat to the front defrost, there's barley any air that comes out. Is that heater core or cabin filter not sure really
I have a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT going on fifteen years ownership. My car has 103,000 miles and I do most maintenance myself. Robert is very helpful.
Good deal.
Great to hear!
I just bought a 2000 s70 awd. 179k. I now know what to do next, and I will. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It's very kind of you to share your expertise in volvo maintenance. Thank you very much 👍

That Glove trick is pure GENIUS! Thank you!

@Hayden Enrique it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out!
I used that glove trick when I bought my S70, super easy, and turned out PCV is working good 👍
Good to hear!

Thanks for watching
Thank you very much, Robert!
I'm just about to buy my first 2000 V70 270.000Km and this and your other video Tipps on what to keep an eye on helped me a lot! :-))))
Glad to help!
Awesome video! Just grabbed one of these in really good shape for $1000 bucks. First thing I am doing is replacing the PCV system and of course watching some of your other videos.
Which car? Thanks for watching.
1998 Volvo V70 T5. Got it for 1000 bucks, no rust, everything works, very clean. Just has a clogged pcv and needs some struts for the hatch.

I now use the tube from the newer cars, '99 and newer.
Watched the whole thing. Excellent video. Definitely going to use it as a reference while I replace that.
You have great love for Volvos. I have always looked past those cars because of it looks but your videos are making me think twice lol
Robert DIY No, my brother put a regular one on. I'm going to look into getting a Volvo one. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thank you again
You are welcome.
Thanks Robert. I have an 01 C70 for daughter. Beautiful car and well worth some effort to keep it running. Really appreciate your guides and pro-active ideas. You have me enthused to get to work and stay ahead of problems. Matt Victoria Australia.
Matt B Good deal, thanks for watching.
I'm looking at one 94 with 230000km with all service records one owner car, after watching your videos i think its a steal for $1000
pannu22 Cool, hope it goes well for you.
Thanks for the heater core tip! I will check that since all the floorboards are wet in the 850 I am working on. No noticeable coolant loss, though.
OK, thanks for watching.
These cars are notorious for the sunroof drains clogging up and the water will go in the passenger floorboard. I'm about to tackle that problem myself
Thanks Robert. Been watching a bunch of your videos. You are my go-to Volvo guy now!
Thanks for watching.
yeah, now my go to guy also.
+lionreb very nice.
I love the glove test...I never thought of doing that before.
Matt Woods
Cool. Have fun.
Robert DIY Thanks!
Hey Robert, thank you for all you do to inform the uninformed DIY'ER. I JUST BOUGHT A 850 R I GET IT THIS FRIDAY . WHOO HOO. ILL RECER TO THE PRE PURCHASE VIDEO FOR TIPS ..THX ROBERT.
You are welcome
I like the way you say volvo. Just bought a 2008 volvo xc70 AWD
Thanks for watching
Hi Robert DIY, I purchased my FIRST Volvo in April, has 183,000 miles, engine is good, and body is solid. I had the timing belt replaced LAST THURSDAY!! I feel good!! Is the heater core in the same location on the Volvo XC70 wagon 2001 to 2007??). Am following your recommendations to the TEE. (LOVE your glove test!!). The more I watch your videos (this is my third video of yours, the more I understand that you are a Master Volvo Mechanic. THANK you for sharing your vast knowledge!!
Thanks for watching.
Your vehicle is a p2 model. Try to include that in your searches.

Thanks for this one. Am doing the timing belt kit in January.
Nice
Thank you Robert for all your hard work and help, making these videos and sharing with us. Thank you. You have helped me out greatly.
You are welcome.
Robert is it ok if the heater core has been bypassed? I have a 02 C70 I have a scan gauge hooked up if im easy on it it never reads more than 200 degrees but ocasionaly it jumps up to 220 and then the fan cuts on and brings it back down
Yes.
I did NOT modify those hoses, someone else prior to me checking it did. I would return the hoses to the original set up.
Ok, thank you for your reply. I must say i dont think it's a bad idea, it is a weak and very hard to check point in the system though. It might be the end of my engine because of it. But the modification will entirely be on me! 👍
It's not a weak point, it's a maintenance item. If using the proper coolant they go 350,000+ miles.
thanks, considering a Volvo 850 in my town... this was very helpful.
Thanks for watching.
You are really knowledgeable and a very good instructor. Than you.
You are very welcome
Thanks, Robert. That is very good information. I'm sharing this with my brother-in-law who recently bought a V70.

Thanks Robert for the additional information. I'll be using your recommendations.
Good deal.
Robert is there a way to temporarily bypass the heater core, if so how? Thanks.
Shaun in Vegas says ....just a fantastic video my glove inflated bigtime ....tyvm Robert....again
+shaun miller Well, I guess it needs to be serviced. lol
excellent videos. I'm looking forward to using alot of your suggestions on a 95 850.
Thank you!
P.s. to my past post. My heater core did go poop. I stated to tear my dash apart then went online and saw how easy it is to change. What a mess it made on my carpets.
Ouch
Loads of excellent advice robert :-), handy for the buyer to know if they are buying a pig in a poke.
To someone like me (not a car owner) it sounds daunting, so many things to check and possibly replace, but i suppose a list is the way if you have a foggy brain like me lol, and once its done then there are less chance for a nasty supprise.

Thank you for making these videos, really great stuff!
Speednote10 Thank you for watching.
Robert I love your video series, do you have any opinions on the 960s so far as longevity and mechanics? ever so any specific videos about them?
lurkbob I have owned 3 or 4 960's.

Thanks for posting! You are excellent!!!

Nagy Sandor
And as I see you have a T5? Cool :) Search for RIP (reverse intercooler pipeing) for 850's. Very simple modification, and a lot can be gained with it.
Nagy Sandor Thanks for watching. I overheated one a few weeks ago.
Thanks for the tip on the oil filter. I just bought a P2 Volvo.
Thanks for watching.
That one will need a special oil filter tool.
Hi Robert, thank you very much for this very informative video! Concerning the heater core: In case of a failure, wouldn't I realize an increase in the cooling water temperature in the dashboard?
Yes, absolutely, as the engine is blowing up. 🫣
So I am will be warned by the temperature in the dashboard and I can stop the engine before it is blowing up@@RobertDIY
I wish I had seen this video before I brought mine as there are a lot of tips and hints that would prevent buying a lemon. My car by the way passed these tests LOL

The best information out there on Volvo.Hello, I have a problem with front wiper blades not seating right on the front windshield & headlights. Is this any indication there's another issue?
ruclips.net/video/gt9w-ZSxs9I/видео.html
how do you turn on the wipers on the headlights? bought an 850 a couple months ago. can't figure the wipers out, still have to go through all those blend doors too. hot air on driver side, cold air on passenger and can't control where either blows to.
Hey Robert... must the car be warm to do glove test on PCV system ?... i crank my car cold ( 88° outside so warm day ) and did glove test and glove inflated... is test correct should I wait till temp rise to normal for engine
Warm/hot engine.
Thanks a million Robert... I just bought my first Volvo, a 2004 XC70 with 200k miles, interior leather has No reaps and trans shifts good... only oil leak along turbo tubing pipes... I haven't investigated that problem yet
@@RobertDIY Hey... I would like to send donation but I'm not seeing a link
Nope. My car uses about 1 quart every 700 miles around town. Leaking valve stem seals. Just stay ahead of the oil level and drive on.
Robert, great Video! Can you recommend any oil brand? Valvoline Max Life, Shell Helix, Mobil 1, Motul...?
I like Castrol and Mobil 1.
Nice vid, I subscribed. Those Volvos are very well engineered and the older diesels are highly prized here in Canada.
***** Thanks for watching. Hope they help.
robert, thanks...i see a siver bar across your engine, behind the oil
filler cap...what is it?...i'm on my third volvo and have not seen it
on the other two...of course the current one is without it too...
+Kenneth Howell strut brace. It is a performance part.

Also I
plan on fixing the problems but I’ve seen a few videos you’ve done about issues! Any advice would be appreciated! I love the car and want to keep it running properly! Noting I’m not a handyman but am very capable! 56 & eager to learn about my car!!!
Im thinking about taking the parts needed to the shop to replace when needed? Seems as though I might piss people off?
Wow! Low miles.
ABS module.
Many shops will not use parts that you have, need to ask what are their policy.
Robert DIY
It’s tough cause convenience & cost is important when comes to garage to me but I also like your view on Volvo parts on certain things!
THANK YOU
What kind of car do you have?
Robert DIY 09’ s60 2.5 T that previous owner chipped.
Hmmm, I really don't know. Maybe a roller is bad causing it to bind.

John Galvin Well, I usually look up the value on www.NADAGuides.com. Then back out needed repairs and overdue maintenance.
Thanks. Are you still doing your summer tour?
Yes
Hello Robert I saw that the gloves you installed in oil filler blown away instead of sucking in. Could you give me that link? I'm afraid that my Volvo 850 GLT 1995, automatic transmission has same situation? What is the cause of smoke coming out from oil deep stick? Could you give me an advise? Thanks a lot!
+Alvinil Rey ruclips.net/video/FIRoc0VxLd4/видео.html
Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge.
You are welcome.
Robert DIY Thank you so much for answering BOTH my questions! I know I am going to have more. I will try not to bombard you. :)
No problem, anytime.
I can see this man eventually ending up with a Cross Country or as I like to call them Country Couch.
Lol
I wonder if the transmission torque mount is good?
No on the radio, that is a strange one.
Thank you for the fast reply. The shifts are so hard that all 4 tires will chirp. I'm sure that it will break something. I'll check the transmission mounts, is that the same thing, is the transmission torque mount internal, between the engine and transmission?
Yikes! Lower edge of transmission to the sub frame. I'm sure the box is bad if it's shifting that hard.
Thanks again. I'll check it out soon. I also enjoyed your video of Graceland.
robert have you ever seen an AC compressor clutch NOT disengage? My AC system froze up and then my battery kept draining because the clutch wouldn't disengaged. The clutch is grounded and has a positive switch controlled by the pressure switch right before the firewall. I had to run a new wire from the pressure switch to the compressor to get it to work properly although I think its caused the Compressor to cycle even when the HVAC unit is turned off unless the AC switch is on off and not auto, That last part could be my imagination. Anyway it would seem that wire would have had to short to positive not ground. Really weird.
+Nicholas Hartzler That is strange. I think my compressor runs non stop unless the switch is off.
Great video, as usual. Do you have a recommendation for the strut tower brace, as I see you have on your vehicle?
Benjamin Bartlein Not specifically. I believe they all work. I noticed the difference immediately, mainly because I corner hard going on and off the freeway. I found that one on a car I saved from the crusher.
Hi Robert what is the aluminum bar that goes from one strut to the other for?
+shane dillon Stiffen up the car so it corners with less roll.
+shane dillon It's called a strut brace.
Did you paint the manifold black? Looks cool. What paint did you use?
Engine paint. Also did the top ends of the cam cover.
Hello, i own a 850 GLT 1992 from Sweden, I was looking for the pcv and I don’t seem to have this hose going over the cylinder head past the oil cap. Do you know why I don’t have this? Is it something with the age of the car or do I not have pcv
correct.
Also, I do have smoke coming out of the tiny tube where the oil stick is when the car is running. so you said that means my pcv system needs to be replaced or serviced?
Denise Ezzell Probably, but you should do another test with the glove. - ruclips.net/video/FIRoc0VxLd4/видео.html
Robert DIY And I love your videos. You are obviously very knowledgeable about Volvos. Glad I have someone that I can learn from. I love the car, just want to make sure I get it in the best shape and take care of it.
Good deal. Glad they are helping you.
Thanks for the video! What do you think of Mahle oil filters? I bought one from IPD and it looks like great quality.
Depends on the engine.
I only use Volvo or Mann filters on N white block engines.

Very well Robert.......I appreciate you.

It is tricky fitting the tool in the screw.
I have a 02 v70 cross country.
Any special tips or tricks to getting the front driver's side cv axle out? It seems to be stuck in the transmission pretty good and I'm afraid I'm going to damage the transmission case. I was using a pry bar and a ball joint fork trying to get it out.
Thanks!
Joe Pamplin I suggest using a large flat tip screw driver and tapping it through the mating area.
I've tried that too. I've seen in other videos that people are using slide hammers attached to the inboard joint in some manner and just pounding them out. I'm going to try that next weekend.
Hmmm
Wow, Thanks for the video, Robert. Very helpful
You are welcome.
Hey Robert , Great Videos .... Do you have a preference of either the 4cyl or 5cyl on the Volvo 850 ? Do you think one is better than the other ?
All 850's are 5 cylinders.
Hi there, I'm in dire need of a radiator for my 1998 V70 GLT. I live here in Albuquerque like you I met you at the U pull it a couple weeks ago wanted to know if you have one for sale.

I understand.
Hello Robert,
I have watched your videos for quite some time now repairing my son's 1997 850 AND for research.
+Robert DIY I'm not sure. my son drives it. I believe he said it sticks in second gear and something about reverse. I'll get more info on it.
Some use the Lucas transmission stuff. Just bring the level up and see what happens. Is the transmission leaking?

The 96 I like too as it's clean...lots of receipts...full tune up,timing & heater core done,no check engine on. Just driver seat worn alittle. Plus it has 4 brand new tires.
I was confused..but your videos & advice is greatly appreciated..I'm sure to send you a donation from the bottom of my heart after the deal is done...thanks again ..also I sent you an email to helper but not sure you even seen it
Hi Robert, I'm having problems with a MAF CEL code on my 850, do you think a clogged PCV system might be the cause of that?
I should add I've already had it looked at by my local mechanic and he put a new maf sensor in the car but it didn't fix the problem
+Drowsy_ Mouse Nope.
+Drowsy_ Mouse local mechanic??? Volvo mechanic? What brand MAF?

it was a Bosch oem sensor I believe, and no it wasn't a Volvo mechanic
Do you have a video on replace ing the pcv system?

hello Robert,
my girlfriend bought a 2000 volvo s60 I believe, it did not come with owners manuel, the interior lights won't turn off
there are 4 total one on each rear door and 1 on the front interior quarter panel on both. sides driver and passenger, where is the button that controls those lights ?
Sad to say, it is part of the door latch.
Can you please tell me what the red light at the top end of the temperature gauge is for?
The owner's manual mentions it and directs me to pages that do not mention it.
Could it be gearbox overheat?
I don't even know what kind of car you have. Probably the coolant temp gauge which means that the engine is overheating.
It's one of these you are talking about here, specifically an 850 2.5 20v CD auto wagon.
There is a red light in the "hot" region of the temp. gauge that comes on, but the temperature reads normal by the needle.
I have never seen that, you'd have to show me what you are looking at.
Pictures of it aren't easy to find, I t must only have been used for a short time, mine is a '95.
You can see it in this picture:

I don't see any red light, just a short line.
Rob quick question when I ever I turn my heat to the front defrost, there's barley any air that comes out. Is that heater core or cabin filter not sure really
+Max J What kind of car do you have?
+Max J Either the diverted is not sending that much up there or your have cracks behind your dash and the air is leaking behind there.
