  • This is basically the same as the New Volvo Owner video. It has information in it that many owners simply do not know.

    My spring plans are to replace the lower radiator hose, fuel injectors and install upgraded oil lines. I'd also like to add to your list of "to do's" is clean off any corrosion off the ignition coil connections periodically. Great information for all Volvo owners.

    Great video!
    Another thing to check would be the low coolant warning sensor. If that fails in the "off" position there's not enough warning to prevent overheating if a hose bursts and leaks coolant quickly.

    • @RobertDIY

      Very true. checking the level in the bottle should be done monthly, if not weekly.

    Hi Robert, I followed your advice and replaced the heater core and all coolant hoses on my 1996 850 turbo this past summer. I was driving on Christmas day and my Radiator blew and all the coolant came out like Niagara Falls!! Luckily, as soon as the coolant level indicator light came on I pulled off the road and shut the engine. So I thought that I would add to your video if you have a radiator 15 to 20 years old you may want to replace it. Mine lasted 20 years so I'm not complaining. Strange that the radiator blew with no early warnings like small leak or odor. It just all came out in seconds!!

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 лет назад

      Glad that your coolant low level warming lite came on and you stopped.

    • @rtfly193
      @rtfly193 8 лет назад

      +PAUL MACZ I think 20 years might be a new record! They usually start leaking at around the 10 to 12 year mark (but fortunately the replacements aren't prohibitively expensive).

  • @BustaHymen
    @BustaHymen 4 года назад

    Excellent advice as always. Like yourself I have owned and looked after these cars for 20+ years, and I know they are extremely reliable (that said, I've never owned a turbo version). Good thing pointing out that Mann is in fact Volvo original, that goes for all filters in the car.
    Also, Bosch made the Volvo original plugs, if they are cheaper in your area go ahead and use them (at least the four side electrode ones, they are stamped with the Bosch part number on the base while the insulator is marked Volvo. The platinum ones I think are NGK's).
    A (sort of) educated guess is that if you have Bosch ME5 engine management system you also have Bosch plugs, and if you have Denso you have NGK plugs.

    Great video. I've known a few people who had volvos and didn't know the first thing about them and treated them like a normal car and they failed. Oil changes are crucial to keep the pcv healthy, as well as the turbo. I had a roommate that once ran her 850 so dry that once I heard the lifters pinging around it took 4qt of oil! That car was in the junkyard by the next year. It was a shame too because it was a clean car.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 лет назад +2

      +hugeslacker Ouch! It's sad to see those cars in the junkyard from simple neglect.

    • @hugeslacker
      @hugeslacker 8 лет назад

      Oh man I was so mad at her. I picked the car out and everything. It would have been so reliable, but it had a leak she didn't tell me about and by the time I knew about it she just about ruined it and then moved out and it ended up in the junk yard without her telling me.

    • @RobertDIY

    I have replaced the timing belt, water pump, tensioner bearing, idler bearing every 70K miles on my 1996 850 (requires timing belt replacement every 70K miles). I flush the coolant every 30K miles----no heater core leaks, or blockage.

    very useful information as I just got my first Volvo 960 wagon and drove it home and the weather got cold and it will not start so after tying to figure out the problems these videos make repairs seem simple and are well done in explained in good details now I am confidence that this could be a good buy with a little effort and. good parts I'll let you know if I need your help I was told fuel pump had recently been replaced but the gas gage doesn't work how to repair that and also the sun roof doesn't open any thing to share on doors please driver side is not able to close all the way has hinge problem I think I made a good deal but I think its going to cost a bit so if I can do it I'll save and have a good car at least I hope .

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  7 лет назад

      The cam slinging oil out of the cap opening doesn't mean anything to me. If you have PRESSURE inside the cylinder head when the car is running, instead of vacuum, you have a problem. I'm not sure if you did the PCV system replacement correct or not. You should do a compression test and go from there.

      Robert DIY I sent you video on Twitter.
      Car ran marvelous till about 2 weeks ago I been getting low oil and a wet engine bay.
      I looked into it and did the full pcv kit taking my time.
