    Hey Robert, I've been watching your vids ever since i got my '96 850 10valve wagon a couple years ago, been a huge help when you say some of the odd characteristics about these cars are normal. As this is the first Euro car i was ever even in, I've slowly been becoming accustomed to the driving style these vehicles require you to adopt. It would be an understatement to say driving this old, slow brick has made me a better, and smoother driver.

    Great information. I suggest that anyone replacing a radio from one in the junkyard, to make sure to get the vin# of the that Volvo. You'll need the vin# to get the code. There's a Volvo site that will give you the radio code once you enter the vin#. That way you don't have to trek back to the yard and pray that the car is still there, like I did.

    Excellent video as always! My only qualm would be recommending IPD parts (i.e. fuel pump relay) in general. Go with something from FCP euro, or even better OEM Volvo for the relay example. IPD is excellent for specific parts (upgraded anti-sway bars, ECU flash, or even smaller things; shifter button kit, etc), but also is quick to upsell substandard parts: various vacuum components, coolant hoses, CV axles... the list goes on! Do your research *thumbs up*

    Good thing to check the springplates too. The spring plates, holding up the coil spring, can be quite rusty on these cars and in bad shape. It got loose completely on my parents v70, the spring got the plate hitting the tire, and made that tire go kaboom. I use to pump some oil in the those plates when I change tires.

    ABS module and sensors are rather important topics to add in this list of typical problems :)

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  2 года назад +2

      Not really. Those will not cause any damage to the vehicle or leave you stranded anywhere.

    • @oliviersimonnin6983
      @oliviersimonnin6983 Год назад

      @@RobertDIY If the light is ON about ABS system in Europe, you will get into trouble when the car is checked in the "vehicle safety inspection".
      If so, you must not drive the car until fixed.
      Among many possible issues, the brake liquid is so old that it has so heated that the ABS system's sensor recorded it.
      Never forget to drain the brake liquid every 2-3 years ( quality: DOT 5.1 / quantity about 0,6 L for a P 80) 😉!

    Hi Robert!
    First of all I would like to say a big Thank You for all of your work you've done for Volvo owners.
    I have a Volvo 850 2.5 20v auto non turbo with 90k miles done. I have an issue with it. My Volvo has less power than before, is week. It Goes max up to 5k rpm. The engine is very loud when around 5k rpm. It goes to the red when on neutral
    I have an obd 2 Port and Volvo 850 app.
    When it is around 5k rpm the o2 sensor shows 0.02- 0.06voltt.
    Knock sensor shows around 4-6.
    Mass air meter 403kg/h 3.8v
    I have scanned all faults and deleted about 3 months ago.
    It had:
    AT-114 Mode selector signal missing
    CI-221 vehicle speed signal missing. I never had ABS light on.
    Any of these faulst hasn't came back.
    I can smell fuel from exhaust when parked. It was like that from time when i bought it.
    Revs when parked 840.
    I have already replaced the air mass sensor, ignition Cap with rotor, spark plugs and cords, fuel filter. Oil change every 4k miles. I have cleaned the throttle body. I have spotted from one of your videos it may have wrong throttle body. It has a plastic piece inside. As i remember this one was for manual only.
    Do you think the blocked catalic converter may cause this problem?
    Shall i replace the fuel pump?
    Thanks again and i'm wainting for your comment.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Год назад

      😳 Dude, I almost never see 4,500+ RPM. If you want to go fast, get a turbo.
      Yes the NA throttle body plate has the white piece on it.
      If there is an issue, my guess would be; weak fuel pump, clogged cat, or stretched throttle cable.

    • @kacpermikuko4917
      @kacpermikuko4917 Год назад

      Thank you for your prompt reply.
      The problem is also with lower revs. It has a problem to go uphill, won't accelerate.
      Today i have spotted that it goes only up to 4.5k on neutralny also.
      Do you think if I will remove the o2 sensor i will check if the cat is blocked?

    Also check under the throttle base because if you see oil laying on the head under the throttle it's possibly a seal leak and seal leaks will cut your engine off if you're losing too much oil so if you see oil those seals need to be replaced at the distributor cap and at the cam sensor, Robert has a clip on that situation, thanks Robert

    Hello Robert, Thank you for all your advise on the Volvo P80. We've had a 1998 S70 since it was new and it has been used only locally (for 80k miles). At 20 years there are a lot of decisions on whether or not to proactively replace items rather than wait for issues. To be conservative, all of the things mentioned below would seem to need replacement proactively. The list gets a little long but probably all necessary to be safe. Is there anything else that is likely needed to be done? I live in an apt and don't have easy access to tools etc. so going to a mechanic is the option for much of these possibilities. 1) Coolant System: a) The heater core was replaced but the radiator is original. Would you swap it out preventatively? b) The water pump is original even though the timing belt, tensisioner/idler were changed 6 years / 20k ago. I guess it's time for all of these to be replaced beacuse the mechanic we used for some reason didn't change the water pump. c) Is the "drain and refill" method for coolant sufficient as opposed to getting a more intense coolant flush? d) Should all the small coolant hoses and lines such as the ones to the overflow be redone? 2) Brakes: a) The last brake flush was 3 years / 10k ago. The rubber brake hoses are also original. Is it best to proactively replace those? 3) Transmission: a) The last transmission flush was 6 years / 20k ago. Time for a dealer or specialty shop do a flush? 4) Spark plug wires/rotor were changed 6 years / 20k ago. I know I need new wires but is the rotor itself likely needed given the low mileage? I remember there was a hard-to-get screw on the side. 5) Fuel Pump: Is original. Proactively replace? 6) Other Notes: All vacuum lines, hoses, coolant hoses, exhaust system, bearings, a/c, starter, ignition coils, etc. are all original. The car has really only needed small repairs: tie rod, struts/mounts, engine mount, heater core, timing belt, accessory belt, thermostat, and ABS control module. I put in a new alternator / tensioners just last year just to be on the safer side. I used the "turkey baster" method to change power steering fluid. Thanks for any thoughts. You know these cars better than anyone...

    I have located a green wire not attached at the shifter area of a 1997 S90 . The gear shift goes into all gears except for park and will not start in neutral. Do you have a fix for this? Have you had this issue? If I know where the wire came off of I can solder it back on. No issues with the battery . Lights work without starting . The trans lights are working the WSE lights are working on the left of the panel (winter Sporty Economy) .Never an issue prior . It was locked into reverse, I sprayed a bit of white lithium grease onto moving parts at the shifter once is was apart. I also replaced a rear twilight bulb. My grandma just gave me a 96 Volvo 850 with 140k miIes shes moving outta state so she was going to donate it but i told her I wanted it so I gave her $50 and she gave it to me but I know nothing about Volvo's I never even knew they made cars with 5 cylinders that was really a surprise to me so I'm probably going to be watching your channel a lot. I'm still trying to get it running I just know it's not getting fuel im pretty sure it's the fuel pump I'm hoping it's just the relay cause it's a lot cheaper and easier but we'll see. Dear Robert, I have a 95 850, and nowadays it tends to fail when I try to start the car after a short stop. (Refueling, shopping) I start the engine, it runs a few seconds, and then shuts off. I repeat the starting, weak idling, and when I smash the gas, it coughs and stops again. After 15-20 tryings, it just starts again, without any problem, with stable idle. Idle is fix, runs smoothly again, no wavings or so. What can cause this problem? You might have met with a similar one. (Engine: gasoline, 2.0, 126 hp)
