@@OnShouldersOfGiants Funny you should say this, I have a T6 😂 actually about 130K mi on the current trans and I run a tune targeting about 300HP. I’ve even towed trailers with it several times. A $90 shift kit and regular fluid changes helps. That and making sure the radiator core doesn’t crack and contaminate the trans cooler with coolant. That’s what killed a lot of early 4T65s.
That you did this to an engine you fully intended to scrap is so extra I am beyond amazed. And what a lesson about the damage you can cause and how much it can cost you if you don't chang your oil frequently!
i am late on commenting here, yt just showed it now in an engine breakdown loop. volvo engines dont seem to last that long in the usa and have a bad gas mileage. as european in international volvo forums and groups, i noticed huge differences between US and EU ownerships. i can't recall how often i recommended to consult owners manual for the correct oil type, wheel sizes, required octane level and maintenance intervals. just a few boxes to check and such an engine might run those 200K miles again. don't race it, don't cheap out on service. volvo's design requirements were stating that 300K km should be a point for a first small overhaul on those engines. to compare, VW doesn't even mention "overhaul" and its 180K lifetime. now i imagine this on those ford ecoboost engines that run their timing belt in oil. it's both fuel and oil sensitive and way shorter service intervals. i'd rebuild that one above like it is, just to keep an old volvo running, the era of fuel burning engines seem to end one day and even n/a or lower spec cars might grow in value, especially for the owner who drives it. so those still might run when all R engines are wasted in unfinished instagram projects.
I was able to get my last 5cyl Volvo engine to the 406k mark before it cracked a valve in #1 cyl. Enough to make compression when fired up but on shut down, zero compression. Very interesting to see you tear apart that engine. Always wanted to see the insides. Thank you!

You know, I used to follow your channel because of film photography, the algorithm changed that at some point, I hopped back on the channel at some point and as a Swedish car enthusiast myself (Saab/Volvo) - I am not disappointed!
I like these Volvo engines and admire how nicely and well engineered they are. You could just change piston rings, bearings and refresh engine head and there you go another 200 000 miles with that engine. That engine looked pretty good..
one of my first ever wrenching projects was changing the timing belt and related hardware on my 2007 volvo s60. There was not much wiggle room at all but I managed to do it .. I was surprised to learn that the volvo has a straight 6 cyl engine, I couldn't imagine doing that same job with even less room. Been keeping it running the best I can with proper oil changes! That’s a must!!! Had the timing belt changed years back when my wife was driving and working. Since she moved to a stay at home mom I’ve taken over maintenance to save $$$. Changed timing belt myself with a buddy and it wasn’t too bad. Suspension, brakes, etc. It’s survived a tornado, hail storms, and basketball goals falling on it! It’s a great car and I don’t have plans to put it to rest!
Why not put new bearings in, get the head & valves polished at a machine shop, new pistons/rings/conrods and have yourself a sweet 'as new' backup engine? I know I would, and would make insanely cool content to see the build. All torque specs are in the service manual too.
I have a 2007 naturally aspirated V 70 wagon with almost 375,000 miles on it. The I’ve had the engine replaced once at 275000. It runs pretty great. I’ll never get rid of it.
My 04 V70 N/A 2.4 is a beast. 229,000 so far. Electrical gremlins as expected but it let me run on 3 quarts for a couple weeks before I realized! Oh how we treat our first cars ;)
Those bearings are not bad in those mileage at all.camshaft look litlebit worn out.also sylinder worn.but that shows how reliable volvos are.if been chanced oil and doing other maintenance in time those engines last decades.
Enjoyed watching your video. What do you think was the cause of the low compression? Carbon buildup on a valve, cracked or stuck piston ring? Did you ever determine what it was?
Burning oil, my guess is the chronic lubrication failures from the lack of oil changes cost we're on the piston rings resulting in all of that oil burning. And if oil is burning it stands to reason that some of the compression gases could also be leaking down into the crankcase, keep that up long enough and I could see that cylinder losing compression.
Awesome! Here in Sydney, P2 Volvos are very rare. I own one of the only Volvo S60s in Sydney, with the 2.4L NA engine. Was this the NA 2.4 engine?? It's a little hard to tell cause you got the R wheels on that V70, but I don't think that was the V70R right?

After watching I have not seen anything unusual. All the worn stuff was engineered to be replaced. All the dirty stuff can be cleaned. There was nothing terminal about this engine. It needed a rebuild. You might have been very well off to rebuild it with new everything back to perfection and then put it back in the car. Then sell your running used engine.
I love my volvo sooooo much, i need to keep working on mine.. 06 xc70 really nice clean, 220k just had head gasket replaced and yeah......water in the oil, oil in the antifreeze...I am guessing they messed up some where, car drove about 400miles and then did not sound or perform right. i torn the top end down yesterday and almost ready to lift the head....When i removed the cam cover i knoticed tons of carbon buildt up near both edges piston 1 and 5 maybe?. So must be the cylinders exhaust is getting into head as well. This is my first volvo rebuild. I am hoping everything is fine with bottom end. My motor is in car and i was hoping to not remove and replace.
Hoping to pull the head completely off today and see the cylinder walls and and head domes, I guess run a couple oil changes after rebuild, and clean rest water out of here and there. I do not want to get into pulling the pan. Any pointers to look for or address along the way appreciated. Disabled and working in the grass, would probably be 100% times easier to remove and rebuild I know 😅
my 2002 has 362.000 miles on it now. still running like a champ. gets fresh oil every 25.000. my 2004 engine died at 311.000. currently putting an other engine in it

6:31 Why didn't you just rotate the engine 90 degrees on the stand, so with your long cheater bar,, you're pushing against the floor, instead of rolling the stand around the garage?

Through the whole video you are keep saying that this is not what you expect to see. But what exactly you want from that mileage? "Ah, bearings is worn!". Really? 200k isn't a joke for any engine
@@wheelemverb 100%. My 170K mile B6294T (2.9 T6) burns barely a quart on most 5000 mile oil change intervals. And most of that comes from the worn out bank 1 turbo thrust bearing. Properly maintained whiteblocks should go 400k, and by that point probably just need a head gasket and maybe a lifter or two if they are the older hydraulic style. Know of a couple people with 600k+ on theirs.

It looks quite clean tbh for the km it has. Many life left in it. This is not even near of the "😮😮shhiieeet" scale comparing to others.
Looks like you could shim the upper sections of the cylinder sleeves and use it for a 2.5 R build if none of them are cracked.

Yeah there is pretty much only one thing that kills a Volvo engine: Neglect.

25000 is way too long cut that in half 10.000 to 12.000 is adequate thats when the oil starts to become pretty dirty and used up

Collged pcv oil trap , collegd vvt selonieds . They have to be replaced every 60k .
Those head bolts will break cheap sockets like nothing

These Volvo engines can easy do twice that amount if you maintain them well. Just bought a Volvo with 326000 kms
Mate, i don't want to sound stereotypical but 200k is not that much for a Volvo. This engine was def worn out a lot more.

Almost 200k on my V70R. Runs like a top. Dad's V70XC has around 300k of not more than that.
