    Parts to get along with an PCV kit sold through some vendors, if your car has EGR:
    EGR Gasket: 3531078
    Throttle Body Gasket: 9135990
    PTC Vacuum Elbow: 1389574
    High Pressure Fuel Line Hose, about 4 inches, 5/16" (7.5mm - 8mm).
    This video will show you how I serviced the PCV System on a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo car. It also shows a few things about the 1993 and 1994 NA 850 and explains the process with the newer 850's and S70 and V70 through 1998. The car in the video had EGR so it shows how those parts are taken apart and cleaned.

    Robert - You're the man!! I used your video to replace the PCV on my 1995 850 N/A and everything came together and it all worked! I've never attempted this major of a repair on my own and I was nervous that I'd get into the weeds and get stuck and have to throw in the towel for professional help. Although your video has differences between the turbo models and the N/A models the method is generally the same. While I've read on here that people can knock this job out in 2 or 3 hours, it took me all weekend. It was amazing how much carbon build up was in the PCV line and how clogged the EGR was. I cleaned it all as you instructed. My advice to those that are attempting to do this job is to take your time, label every vacuum hose (I did it with a label maker) and take pictures that you can use as a references when putting everything back together. To me, this was NOT a fun job and it sucked trying to get the two upside down bracket manifold bolts off and then put back on but your video saved me a ton of $$$ in my wallet (Volvo of Dallas wanted around $1000 to do the job)!! Once I put everything back together I drove the car around my neighborhood and it was idling a little rough but on further inspection I noticed that the hose to the top right of the manifold had come off when I was putting the vacuum tree back on and it was an easy fix. Once reconnected it now runs great and no longer do I have breathe in poisonous/noxious gasses when I'm sitting at a stop light. Thank you Robert! You saved me a ton!

    Found oil all over the top of my Volvo 850 2.3L T5 engine... I know now with out a doubt that my problem in the pcv box... Thank you for the video... I will source one tomorrow since it's 7pm on a Sunday here in Johannesburg South Africa. The moter was recently rebuilt but the guy who rebuilt it for me neglected the pcv system.. New rings, bearings and head gasket.... New crank pully... But didn't replace the pcv.... I'm sure he wanted my moter to go again so he could get more work in... We will see who's smarter now... Thanks Robert. You the man

      Normal for oil to be on top of the engine. Usually from a bad oil cap seal.

      @@RobertDIY yes that is true. Did have smoke comeing out the dipstick and the water reserve bottle was bubbling and pushing water out as well.

    Hey, Robert here I am again on a new project. History on this car: I have a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo with 153,000 actual miles. I have put about $9k plus in this car since 2006 when it had 38,000 on it. I do most of the work on my car to save money. I will let a mechanic see it if I can't fix it. I finally decided to do the PCV kit by myself yeah, it took me 2 days because I kept dropping screws and gaskets where I had to unscrew everything looking for screws. I also stripped 4 6mm flat torx screws for the spark plug cover. Never thought I would strip them having to borrow a neighbor stripped screw fixer. Get a telescoping magnet to capture dropped screws and tools!
    Now that I'm finished I having acceleration on startup. It doesn't settle down to normal idle. It just keeps revving up so I have to shut it off. This didn't happen to be'for the PCV kit. I didn't see much on the throttle assembly. What could be wrong? Can you help me so I can have a working car? Does the wire go over or under the throttle wheel? I went under. Is there a video or a link I can go to on assembly of the throttle housing?

    Omg the NA so much easier. I had to do it 3 times. My vacuum lines comes off the tree. No wrap around to the other side of the manifold. Ended up replacing all the vacuum lines. I mean I got all this space now! Lol. Check all the orifices. My vacuum was plugged in the elbow into the throttle body. Cleaned it with a nail. Done! Thanks for your help Robert. My 98 S70 Goonter breathes again

    Hi Robert, although this is an old video, don't underestimate the value of it. I had no idea that this system needed cleaning and for the past few years has suffered oil on top of the spark plugs. I just put it down to age of the car being a 1994 and just about on 300,000 miles. Then I caught a forum post about "oil under the spark plug cover" and did a bit more research. Your videos covering so many versions is very valuable and i'm just in the middle of this job. My car also has the VVIS on the inlet manifold and I had no idea that mine was a) seized and b) vacuum disconnected. I had put down the loss of power for the past few years as "old age". Had I not been doing the PCV, I would never have encountered the VVIS on the manifold!
    This is the first time the PCV has been changed on the car, fortunately, I know that the rear main crank seal is ok, a local Volvo specialist recently fitted a new clutch and I asked about that seal. They said they preferred to leave alone at this age as from their experience, that's the better option.
    After this job, it's straight onto the cambelt, done that before though. I'm right there with you though, the value of the old Volvo's isn't in the financial value but the service they deliver. Ours is worth nothing but has been with us for 21 years, taken both children home from being born (they are now teenagers and one driving himself), transported our dogs (now long departed). The Volvo is a cherished family member and long may it continue. 300,000 miles? Here's to the next 100,000.

    Glove was blowing up on my 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo, so I decided to make this maintenance repair, despite the feeling it was beyond my skills. It WAS beyond my skills, BUT how do you gain experience and skills? I read that the repair should take upwards of 8 hours if you don't know what you are doing. I took me at least 30 hours over 5 days and a GREAT DEAL of frustration. Used this video and FCP Euro's as my guides. Snapped pics of everything as I went along. Everything was going VERY smoothly until I went to simply lift off the intake manifold as documented in the videos. It would not move. It was connected to a metal pipe, which I would find out was connected to the EGR valve. Well, I lubed the nut and finally got it off, but I COULD NOT GET THAT EGR PIPE CONNECTED AGAIN TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. The first (2) times I completed this project, I got the manifold started (bolted with a few bolts) and then connected the pipe and then finished bolting down the intake manifold. DID NOT WORK. Manifold was not flush - had massive vacuum leak. Car stalled out immediately. Eventually, on my third try, I set the manifold flush and bolted it down. But I still had the task of connecting the EGR valve. I tried torching that pipe, bending it with locking pliers....nothing. (It MAY have eventually succumbed to the torching, but I didn't spend a whole lot of time trying.) Finally I decided to remove the EGR from the manifold, screw it to the metal pipe, and then install the EGR back on the manifold. That took probably 2 hours, and it was a bear, but I finally got it connected. I shudder to even think about the entire process.
    ANOTHER aspect of this repair that is glossed over in the videos is the removal of the fuel rail. YOU HAVE TO BE SOOOOOO CAREFUL REMOVING THAT FUEL RAIL OR YOU WILL LOSE THE FUEL INJECTOR SEALS (LOWER) AND/OR THE FUEL INJECTOR SPACERS (UPPER). You will not be able to find these anywhere but online, special order, or the junk yard and they are pretty expensive. I suggest carefully loosening each injector at the bottom so you pull them out attached to the fuel rail. If the little seals fall in the engine, THEY ARE GONE - DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME LOOKING FOR THEM, and your injectors will leak and your car will idle rough or not start. You may want to try and slide a tray under the rail as you remove the injector rail. To be fair to Robert, he knows how careful you have to be in removing the fuel rail, and that it is something you want to avoid at all costs....unfortunately I don't think it is stressed strongly enough in his video.
    Finally, do not think someone in the Volvo DIY forum will hold your hand and guide you through the process. While any help is certainly appreciated, the response times are often very slow. Depending on how many questions you ask, you will very likely hear that you have done irreparable damage to your vehicle and that it will cost thousands of dollars to repair. This will stress you out even more than you already are.
    If you are a newbie, you might want to count the cost of making this repair by yourself, especially if you have an EGR valve. But if you want to gain some experience and get to know your vehicle a little better, go ahead and make the repair. Depending on your skill level it may take you far longer than 8 hours and you will need a spare vehicle to run to parts stores and the like. Make sure to have a long magnet to help you retrieve the loose bolts and sockets that WILL fall into the engine.
    Upon finally finishing the project, the glove is limp. I am very thankful to Robert for this thorough instructional video. I couldn't have made the repair without it. Plus he has videos on just about anything Volvo under the sun if you need.

      +Robert DIY I did clean out the engine block holes with some carb cleaner. I have since edited my post to say that, after testing a few more times, the glove is not blowing up at all. (I had initially thought there was some blow back.) I could make this PCV system repair now in 2-4 hours no problem IF it wasn't for that EGR valve - specifically the pipe. Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with that thing? You mentioned an "EGR delete with tunes"? Thanks.

      Those pipes are hard to deal with, you have to really concentrate and take it loose, etc.

    Thank you for your step-by-step insturctions and very accurate shooting of the whole process! I've done first the heater core replacement and now the whole PCV stuff thanks to your videos on my 97 v70. One thing I can add to this video - if you find the thin PCV hose (which get's hard and breakes) to be a little bit expensive - try to pick a flexible hose of similar internal diameter. I've picked one which is a petrol hose and used a heat-resistant tape to on it to prevent it from breaking apart if I would change the PCV can once again in future.

    Yes the EGR does kinda suck, adds about 2 hours on the job. Most of the 850's from '93 through '95 has EGR and some of the '96 cars. Some people do an EGR delete with tunes.

    I have done this operation on several cars. The latest being a 98 S70 with 265k. I bought this car about a month ago.It was apparent that someone before me did a hack job on this - the hoses were not the 'right' ones, and the small vacuum line from the PTC to the intake manifold was weak and seriously kinked in several places. The last guy also put in some wrong elbows as you found in your video.When I was done, I cut open the oil trap / breather box. While it was a mess inside, it wasn't blocked in any significant way. The hose from the valve cover to the breather was OK. The other lines, other than being a hack job, weren't blocked. The PTC (the end of the lines in the intake to the turbo) was completely blocked. There's a small vacuum line here, and a much fatter line. I yanked out the PTC and soaked it in carb cleaner repeatedly to get it cleared up.It's all good, now that I replaced all the lines and cleaned the PTC, but without cleaning the PTC this would have been all for nothing. If this had had the correct hoses, I think that maybe the breather box and line replacement would have been mostly a waste of time. Maybe just pulling the hoses at the PTC and cleaning the PTC would have been sufficient...

      @@RobertDIY yeah it's the UK right hand drive version with 147,500 miles. The engine is amazing but it slightly burning oil very intermittently. I did the glove test and it's only slightly inflating... but not as much as in the video

    Bless you. I was NOT wanting to do this job, but at least I have a reference to go back and watch when I get the motivation...lol my car is blowing oil and I was freaking out last time I changed my spark plugs, the area where the cell packs go in was flooded with oil. I am going to do this ASAP, and get a new oil filler cap seal, it is hardened down to brittle and isn;t stoping anything.

    Just purchased a 1995 Volvo 850 for my 17 year old to drive to school-successfully repaired the odometer thanks to your video. The car is stalling at lights after it warms up. I assumed it was the PVC system, my local mechanic wants to replace it, but with the glove test, it doesn't inflate, gets sucked in. Now what? (love this car)

    Totally agree with the Volvo oem parts. I did not get volvo parts and two of the short hoses that carry coolant totally dried out within 6 months and I had to remove the intake and replace these two hoses. 👍

      Good deal. It may never go bad. My car has about 50k on the kit and all seems very good. I use synthetic and change between 5,000 and 8,000 miles. The oil still has life at 8,000 according to Blackstone Labs.

    99 volvo v70 xc turbo - had blown cam seals about 8 months ago (did not know why). a few months later car started to stall ). did the glove test, glove did inflate. replaced oil trap and hoses (there was a detachable piece connected to the manifold that was plugged with oil and the hoses was crissed cross to the oil box). cleaned etm, replaced etm gasket and manifold gasket. cleaned ptcv nipple. did glove test, no smoke, glove did not inflate, instead it was nearly sucked into the engine. Let car run idle for 20 minutes. sounds good.will take on a test drive this weekend. not a easy task!!! , but if i had to do it again, i could do it much faster. I appreciate it Robert.

      This might be far fetched. I had an engine light on, that was reading a catalytic converter code. Do you think this repair could take care of that? Of course, I will have to drive about 20 miles for the computer to reset, being that the battery was disconnected.

      Cool, so you have EGR and this video will show you all the in's and out's about it.
      I really prefer people purchase the kits. Then they can add the intake and EGR gaskets. Ordering all the parts separate usually ends in a mess.

    The PCV valve should be changed, in general, in all cars, to 30000/50000 km. It is important to change that piece because they become clogged or damaged. If it does not work well, the oil gases tend to run out of the engine seals. In the Volvos, they should be changed between 80000 and 150000 km, depending on the case. I already changed that piece in two Volvos. In the first one, an S40 T5 was changed to 120000. In my current one, a Volvo S60 T6, I changed it to 80000 km. It is relatively easy to change it in the Volvo S60 T6, especially because of its location (above the engine). Although there are some screws that take a lot of work out and then screw them. I recommend changing that part so that the engine stays clean and in good condition.

    Dammn, the older 850s are way harder to replace the PCV on. On my 97 the fuel rail comes out super easy with no hassle and there is no egr I believe.

    I haven't checked the compression.the engine runs great except for the + crankcase pressure.I would not have thought that to be a factor,however,I will check it and let you know what I find out.

    +Robert DIY, The only problem that I have with all of this, is how brittle all of those rubber hoses get. And for what its worth, I do not recommend using brake cleaner on rubber hoses, because it'll dry them out.

    I dont have my pcv system placed at that location anymore on my t5 v70. I have it install next to the filterbox with special mods looks now 100% stock like it was from factory. I can easly clean or replace it with just 2x 10mm and some hose clamps.

    I can't find the other video where I asked this question so I am going to ask again here. I did the PCV replacement on my 1998 v70 T5. Used the ipd kit. I got everything apart and back together ok. I did need to drain my coolant because I had to pull the hose off the top of the thermostat to get to one of the manifold bolts.
    When I went to crank the car up after getting done I got a really bad turnover sound and then the car would't start. I tried to pump the fuel system by turning off and tuning on several times without cracking. Didn't start on the second try and I took a peek under the hood. I found fuel on the top of the block.
    I checked for leaks (didn't see any), tightened the fuel line going into the fuel rail (I remembered that I loosed it slightly earlier in the job and forgot to retighten it) and tried again. Same thing except this time no fuel on the block.
    I did not change the oil when I was done with the PCV replacement. My ports were clean and when I got done it looked like it didn't need to do the PCV system (expect for the fact that it had never been done and the little hose that connects into the manifold was broke).
    Also I didn't use a torque wrong on the manifold. I didn't have one, but I was careful not to over tighten the bolts and I put them on in a criss cross type pattern.
    Any ideas on why I got fuel on my block and no start?
    I did take the file rail off as a part of the job and I did install new fuel injector rings.

      Charles Kennedy Hey Charles, the main reason to replace the system is that is fails the glove test. Second reason is that all the lines are old and brittle, break easily which causes problems. As for your issue, check this video, hopefully it will help.     Hello Robert, Very grateful to you ! I have already implemented your recommendations, replaced the PCV hose on my S40 (2005), which was broken. However, the engine continues "whistle" when hot and after about a week the "Check Engine" light comes up. The compression test was fine - a glove was almost swollen inside and I had to hold it. Can it be the PCV system or something else? Thank you.

    Once again, thanks for being so helpful, the world needs more people like you. I paid a shop specializing in European cars, with a good reputation, to replace the PCV system, and recently noticed that the glove still inflates when I put it over the filler cap, and still see smoke coming out the dipstick. The mechanic who did the PCV job said it was likely "blow by" and I'm kinda clueless so I was wondering your opinion. Do you think Seafoam or Marvel Mystery Oil or something similar before an oil change might help get the "funk" out of this engine with 165000 miles on it, or is that likely to cause more issues? The car doesn't lose much oil, maybe half a quart per 1,000 miles, but I really dont want to blow out the seals with the current positive crankcase pressure.....

      +Louis PüŠtank "Blowby" is combustion air getting past the piston rings. What that means is that the engine is worn or has some kind of damage to a piston ring or wall. That can usually be detected by a compression test. That is one of the reasons I recommend people do a compression test prior to doing this service. So, do a compression test, and if it is good, there is a chance that the service was NOT done correctly.

    Robert, did the pcv job. System is clean now and am ready to install the new parts. Great video!!! Without it I wouldn't have done this job. One question. After cleaning the lower port I connected a hose and did blow through it. I had a free flow but could hear the oil bubbling.....is that ok? The upper plrt just had a free flow, no oil bubbling.       Hans S I don't understand what you are writing. The box is usually re-usable. The oil trap box does not carry oil, just vapors so do the PCV test after everything is back together.

    Ok thanks Robert for all your help I clean the hell out of the IAC car has more power now and running much better Idol is where it's supposed to be one quick question when I removed all the intake hoses the one for the airbox when I looked in the airbox there was this little door that was open it was on a spring I could close it and open it with my finger is it supposed to stay close because it was in the open position when I pushed it back the spring would keep it open

      Probably from a cheap aftermarket part on the bottom of the breather box.

    Robert, thanks AGAIN for all your help. I've got a problem I'm hoping you might have some input on.
    I dropped the clip that holds the throttle cable in place (visible in this video at around !4:30). I dropped it in the engine compartment and for the life of me can't find it. I'm not even sure what the clip is called. Any ideas on how to replace it?

    Hi Robert. Awesome video like the other ones too. I have one question though. I recently bought a 850 Turbo and it has a clogged PCV system that needs replacing. The first thing i did when I bought the car was changing the oil as the car stood for two years. The thing that i'm interested into is, is it mandatory to change the oil as the oil is pretty new (It has about 1000 km on it) and if it is can it be done some time after the PCV replacement, because i would need to take the car to someone who has ramps or either a big lift. Thanks in advance

      The reason the oil should be changed is... if the ports on the block are clogged, and you clear them by jamming the sludge down into the oil pan, you would be better off changing the oil vs allowing that sludge to be captured by the oil pick up tube and possibly clogging it. You can probably drain the oil and add it back after straining it.

    Robert have questions about pcv v8 xc90 /05 trying to fight oil leaks and want to check pcv valve. On Fcpgroton they say if suction at filler cap and dip stick bad pcv valve. You say if glove test inflate bad pcv is the inflate gloves for certain engines??? If so what’s for v8,s

    Hello, Robert. I need answer to the question what will happen if I cut the hose coming from the head, close the part going to the separator and vent the part coming from the head to the atmosphere by extending it and putting filter at the end of it?
    I'm about to do it and I can't find any information on someone else who's done it. The reason is that the mechanics in my area do not acknowledge that kind of maintenance. They tried to rip me off with engine rebuild. I don't feel comfortable trying to do it myself due to lack of experience and fear of mistake.

    Hi Robert, we do appreciate your help! I have a question regarding my 1994 Volvo 850.
    They overhauled the engine, but the oil light doesn't turn off. You have to accelerator the engine before it turns off and if the engine stays on idle, the oil light turns on again. Someone told me it could be the oil pump, i changed it but the light doesn't turn off. what do you think could be the reason?

      Edward Segujja The most common problem with the low oil pressure warning is the oil pick up tube being clogged or having a broken/cracked/missing seal where it (the seal) is installed. Whoever rebuilt the motor should fix it. They will have to drop the oil pan and either clean the pick up or replace the seals on it.

      +fdjbm11 Why is it failing? They will tell you. Yes the PCV system can cause emissions failure. That is what the system is.

    Brother Robert 1 question... please confirm the crankcase hose are different on the non turbo and turbo if you could. The length is slightly longer on the turbo correct?       Not sure I understand the question. On that car there is probably a banjo bolt on the passenger side of the intake manifold and it may also have a vacuum tube over there.

    Hey Robert, I have a '98 S70. 240,XXX miles on it, runs beautifully other than a few smaller issues and a head gasket. It does have an oil buildup under the beauty cover leading me to believe that it has the problem you described here. I am going to be replacing the head gasket soon (as it currently has head sealer in it and it is working for the time being) and figure its a good time to do this as well, but what else would you think is worthwhile to do while it is apart for preventative maintenance?

My Check Engine lights just came on today, with the codes P1237 and P1550 - (I think the P1550 is due to the ABS/ESP module - these lights have been coming and going). But I'm wondering if the P1237 could be related to over-pressure? I live close to Sweden in Denmark, Europe - so I hope I can get my hands on the parts needed to fix these problems.

      No, the PCV usually does NOT toss a code. You need to Google the code.

    Hi Robert, I have a quick question for you, hopefully you can help me out with it. On your video (23.29) that line from the pcv system, I never remembered removing it from my manifold? I have seen other videos where that line is plugged onto the side of the manifold, but mine seems not to have the plug to insert that line? have you ever seen this before? my manifold literally has a block off plate on that side and its original manifold obviously, and the pcv system is barely getting serviced by myself. The pcv system has never been maintained before, everything is all original. I just bought the car, and wondering if you've seen this before as well? 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo (EGR) (160k mi) I'm using an IPD USA kit (gave them a call and provided the right serial number for my car too) (I know you said not to go aftermarket, but the OEM was off my budget at the moment) thank you in response!

      FYI my old pcv kit seemed to have that line, just don't know where it came from? my new kit as well comes with that hose, and I'm just stuck now. Would you know if the 1994 models are different to the 95's?

      There are about 20 variations of the PCV system. Put it back the way you found it.

    Robert, i have a 1998 2.5 V70 (non turbo) is this the same procedure? my dipstick does smoke and the glove does inflate, is there an oil catch on mine? Thank you from the U.K

    Thank you for the vide Robert! I have that same problem with the glove blowing up. But I did change the pcv box and I cleaned out the pipes at the turbo. It's a 1994 850 T5. The engine was recently rebuilt... It still blows the glove up... What else could be the problem? The car is also running without a thermostat. Could not get a new one and didn't trust the old one.

      Did you check compression? Are you doing the glove test with the engine hot?

      @@RobertDIY didn't check compression. I don't have a tester. But the moter stops almost immediately after I turn her off. I used the glove test while the engine was cold

You've helped me with a lot with this channel but I feel like there is room to definitely widen your audience, I'm 28 and semi knowledgeable but I'll take all of your advice and help make a good video on camera. I would also be willing to Pau whatever, but I have a lot of faith that you can break new ground with me, or even the same concept anywhere else. The truth is my brother is hot headed and he rushed the pcv job as it was getting hot

    Hi, I live in California where temperatures are usually 75-105°f, and I was curious whether to run 10w-40 or 15w-40 in my 94 volvo 855 5t, and if it makes much of many difference. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Robert. I have a Volvo 850 T5-R 1995. I have raplaced my oil trap/pcv box. and all associated hoses. But when i put a glove over the engine oil filler hole, the glove still inflates verry quickly. What else do i need to do?
