  • It’s time to try and repair the Rear Main Seal (RMS) and Positive Crankshaft Ventilation (PCV) on our Volvo 850. First we need to get access to the Gearbox to be able to remove it, so we had to uninstall a lot of parts before that.

    - Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back to its home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come.

When I bought my 98' S70 T5M three years ago, it had a serious rear main seal leak. I replaced the PCV system with OEM parts and added AT-205 seal conditioner to the crankcase. After three years of ownership, still no leaks!

Another terrifying job I hope never to encounter, but as these cars age......oh dear who knows. Bad PCV systems are supposed to put pressure on the rear seal, I don know how true that is. 20 years ago when the car were fresh I would to clean my PVCs before they became a problem. However now I am back in the Volvo game after a few years gap I am spending much time putting right other peoples lack of love......Some of your videos are bringing back memories I had long forgotten (like that fuel rail clip!) and I'm not looking forward to that again!
Its such a shame cars of the 90s/2000s, which are inherently so much more reliable than superficially "simple" cars of the 70s/80s, are so complicated and untidy under the bonnet. Such a mess of pipes and hoses, its like the makers put zero thought into future maintenance only how quickly they could slap things together at assembly.

Nice little story, fun to read!😊 The rear main seal replacement was exciting and scary at the same time. A lot of work for just a little piece of rubber but we learned a lot.
It's a shame that so many cars (especially from 90's and the beginning of the 00's) were and are not taken care of like they deserve. I have owned quite a few BMW's from that era (e30, e36's and still own an e60) and ofcourse drove this 850 while my dad was still alive, and there is just something about that era of cars. I mean that straight 6 M54 BMW engine is just so smooth (they all had cooling issues btw as they were BMW's) but aside from that it's a whole different experience driving that era cars then it is with modern cars and they are so "easy" and fun to work on. I also own a 2021 VW T-Cross (well, it's a lease) and it has all the modern features you could wish for but it's just not the same (and don't get me starting on doing maintenance on that thing, but that's for the lease company to care of🤪).
So yeah, I totally get where you're coming from😉
Oh and thanks for watching our videos!

Oooh I'm not envious of doing this on a 850. I've just done the rear main seal on my 960 and that was hard enough with the engine situated the other way around :D

Much work, but very rewarding and we learned a lot!😄 But, we are happy this is not a yearly maintenance thing😅🤪

Leuke video jongens!!
