We are two brothers that like working on cars and have finally gotten our hands on our dads 1996 Volvo 850 estate after 9 years. The 850 has great emotional value to us and we are very excited to be restoring it!
The 850 has been sitting outside for over 7 years and nature has done its best at reclaiming it. Now it’s our turn to bring the car back to its former glory and make our old man proud.
Our initial intention was to restore the 850 and document everything for our family and friends and maybe some people that are interested in Volvo 850’s. However, after making a couple of videos and seeing the interest in them we decided to get a little more serious about our channel by expanding beyond documenting the Volvo 850 restoration. We like to help and entertain people, so we decided to start by making how to videos and Volvo S60 T5 videos.
Our dad bought his ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate on February 21 ’09. He always maintained the car accordingly and had many parts replaced.

Can We Drive 256km After Replacing The Head Gasket? | Volvo 850 Restoration
We had to replace the head gasket on our Volvo 850. Now there is just one mistake we need to fix and then hopefully we can drive it 256 kilometers and test our head gasket repair!
After replacing the head gasket the legendary 5 cylinder made an awful noise. The first problem was that we messed up the ignition order. Once that was fixed, the awful noise was a little less but still there. We decided to wait a little and let the lifters get enough oil. Sure enough, that also made a little difference but still, that awful sound remained… Now after a close inspection, we made a little mistake regarding the exhaust manifolds…

Our Volvo 850 has been loosing coolant from the heater and so we replaced it. We also had a bad fuel smell when the tank was full, which was caused by a bad fuel pump seal. Hey guys, I wanna thank you for making such a detailed series on clutch/rear main seal replacement. I just did the job myself over 4 days since my clutch was messed up, having the videos to guide me when writing a step-by-step guide for myself really helped :) I also checked the videos during the job if I got confused. Managed to do some shortcuts myself, I didn't need to disconnect the slave cylinder (just moved it off to the side instead), and since I wasn't doing PCV, I could keep all the intake stuff on, while still managing to get the starter off. Keep up the great work, you're the best
I almost destroyed my replacement dashboard! Luckily I saw the 4 T30 bolts on the outside after watching this video, thank you!
How much would this cost?
Sounds amazing but i have a question, where do i buy this bypass valve? Thanks
Great project you guys! I can relate to your enthusiasm, got my Volvo 850 96` in 2012, when my father gave it to me. He bought it originally in 1996, so its in our family since the very beginning. You gotta love those old bricks, just excellent cars :) I really enjoyed your journey and your videos helped me a lot with some minor problems so thanks a lot! I hope your 850 stays in that great shape and i wish you lots of fun with her ;) kind regards from Austria
absolutely no messing about !!
I wonder if it doesn't look easier to lift the engine out than getting it at it from underneath?
I've had great success using my TIG welder on low power to very precisely heat nuts and bolts
Im wondering if the exhaust is the same diameter as in a t5-r. And if so! Where did you buy that ? :)
did you all replace the wood trim on the dash or is that OE?
@MatN1988 As far as we know that is OE.
What the fuck the price doubled in 2 years I'm looking for one and it's at least 50e

Gebruiken jullie speciaal gereedschap? Zo ja wat voor gereedschap?
We hebben inderdaad een tool gekocht om ze te vervangen. Demontage gereedschap draagarmbus achteras bij R&D Car Parts.
@@MusTRitch dankjewel! Ga ik gelijk bestellen 😁
Hey, love your videos! They have been very informational 👍🏻. How much have you guys spend on 850 restoration so far?
Thanks! We spend 7k plus... and there is more to come😅😊
Does this cause negative camber?
What model is this? I can't seem to find a wastegate actuator for my 2001 S60 T5, engine code is B5234T3
What brand slave cylinder did you guys buy?
Where did you buy the upper rear spring seats?
@zunnde I think we got those from estateservices.nl
How has the glue held up Need to do mine
@dazbooker After three summers it is now starting to come undone. So not a permanent fix with that specific glue.
@@MusTRitch Ive purchased some high temp extra strong spray contact adhesive Hopefully should be ok I'll let you know how it goes
Please do!😄
Hey im thinking about buying a 1998 v40 with the 1.8 volvo engine. The car seems to be very neglected but no rust on the outside, actually rlly great paint but the seller says the exhaust is broken. When i asked him if it did rust off he said he dosnt know, he sells it for a friend and didnt check for rust on the underbody. Like i said, the paint and arches look perfect and the car got lowish milage (for a volvo 190k km) and its just 400€ . I think i could scrap it and get my 400€ back. Pray for me, i hope it dosnt got rust, would be perfect
I live in the U.S. and have a 1996 base model 850 wagon. I would love to have manual windows in my 850, so in this one you’ve got power front windows and manual rears? I’ve never seen that before
how did you get that rear bumper hanging fixed?
Prost !! Great job guys !
😮 wow you are both repair excellent perfect professional.. I used Volvo 850 this is a best one for me guid line
nice video and the inevitable wtf moment when applying the anaerobic sealant 😂 many have wondered about it but it strangely works
amusing and educational nice video and good job😊
lamost impossible to open the box, stupid enginers at volvo sometimes
Perfect. No fluff and ideal length 👌
Goed gedaan jongens 👍💪. Weer een geweldig filmpje
All that exhaust work, and no broken bolts? You guys are magicians. Great way to spend time in the car with a road trip with all your brothers.
Great work guys, love to see those road trips
👍👍😊😊
Nice car and engine sounds perfect now! Brings back memories from my 1994 850.
Well done guys! You certainly deserved those multiple beers......
Great video as always! Also did a head gasket on my V70 2.0 10V from 1997. The same thing with the exhaust manifold gaskets happened to me as well. 😂 Unfortunately my manifold was cracked, so i had to get another one.
That is a mistake we will both never make again😅 too bad for your manifold though!
Netjes gedaan 😄
Good job guys !
❤🎉😊 Great job boys!
Volvo 850❤❤❤❤❤
You can remove the entire dash without removing the pad! Removed one that way this morning. Just have to remove 1 t25 on each side that attaches the dash pad to the A pillar, the cowl bolts, the t25s after the console is removed and the t25s in the footwells. Good grief it is heavy that way!
Very great video, was happy I referenced this before heading to the salvage yard thank you!
Can you REuse the special bolt with the slots , or do you need a new one (could not see it on your video at 12:36 what you did there)
We used a new bolt and nut. If its old, rusty and very stuck, like ours, I wouldn't reuse it.
excellent perfect repair.i have Volvo 850..i will must to look flowlow you many time make sure before I have to repair
Very nice job, however I’m very curious 🧐 why you didn’t use primer??
The rust converter also acts as the primer if I remember correctly.
I only need to know if my 2001 v70 xc is a turbo so I can buy an alternator.
Be sure to make pirate noises as well, it makes the installation go smoother and easier. 😉
You would have saved 1 year of restauration if you had bought a DeWalt dcf850 and a dcf900
Dutch weld
I have a 855, had it for 5 years, been sitting in my yard for 3 years on a gravel patch, i have too many cars so i was thinking of scrapping it, but.. I chucked a battery in it and couple of liters of fuel, connected the fuel pump. It started right up and i drove it to another part of the yard like it was nothing, drives smooth even if the gear box oil cooler was not connected nor the radiator, so it got me thinking i will not scrap it before i check the rust underneath it. It's basically 98% rust free. I will just get a new radiator, new belts, plugs, oil and filters then hose it down.
Built like a tank. Definitely worth saving!😄
Looks like an everyday Volvo, just fuel and battery in it you can take it for a drive. Don't need to check the oil.
