  • ►Jacob Maller, one of our resident Volvo guru's, dives deep into the world of Volvo P2 and how to understand it. In this video, we discuss the models, engines, transmissions and trims associated with Volvo P2. Strap in and get your notebook ready, it's a thick one.
We wish we could say it was simple to explain the lineage of Volvo chassis designations. It used to be simple, but that's just not the case with these cars. We wish it was as easy as saying Volvo P1 existed, then came P2, and then P3 but it's...not. You see, P1 came in halfway between P2 and P3. And, before P2 there was P80….makes a lot of sense, right?
Not to worry, as Jacob Maller, our Marketing Coordinator and owner of at least six (semi-running) Volvos will explain. In this video, we feature the mighty Volvo XC90 V8, the Volvo S60R, the Volvo V70R, and the Volvo S60 2.5T-all of which fall within the P2 nomenclature.
Whether you're still confused, or if you've just now figured it out, we want to hear from you in the comments below. Stay tuned for more content and subscribe via the link below for more information about the Volvo P2 and what you need to know about it to keep one running for years to come.

@@brandonmows The only P2 S60's and V70's which had a 6 speed auto were the R models. Regular 2.5t's still shared the AW-55's all the way up to 2009, the last model year of the P2 S60. The guy in the video is wrong on the transmissions part.

This is the perfect breakdown of the Volvo line, and I’m grateful for that!
I’m a SUPER satisfied owner of a P2 XC70(3yrs now) that’s been an unknown gem to me, until I purchased it.
It took a few months to get to understand the make, but once I did, and dug into its history and how robust it’s been, I fell in love with mine!
I’ve ordered parts to handle basic wear/tear from FCP euro over the years and between you guys/ another well know Volvo specialist, I’ve been soo happy with all 3 companies ❤️

I've had a 2004 V70R for 5 years, and love it more than any car I've owned. I've replaced the 4C struts(expensive), and it drives much better. Jacob's remarks about the cracked blocks will help me keep my foot a bit lighter. This car was 'totaled' in 2018, and the insurance company gave me $6100 and the car; cost $2500 to get it back on the road, and good since.

This doesn't really help for the European market. Good luck finding petrol Volvo's here. At least in my country, ~80-95% of all cars are diesel. (trucks for obvious reasons, we have a shit ton of 1.6L or 2L diesel engines, that are extremely forced. 1.6L diesel makes the same power my 2.4D5 makes) Or if they are gasoline cars, they are usually run on cheaper natural gas or whatever. Price of gas really sucks, 1.37 euros per litre, or roughly 5.26 per gallon.

Our stable has two Volvos. We have an ‘06 S60 2.5 with 208k. Trouble free. We make an effort to do preventative maintenance on it had it has paid off. the newest is the one we just acquired. The ‘05 XC70 had a field installed hole from throwing a rod by the seller’s wife. The engine had 169K. My auto shop, Allied Auto in Tri-cities Washington state found a T5 engine with 100K. The turbo was blown on the 169 and the 100 so they found a replacement ( I regret not buying new).
Both vehicles drive very well. We get 25-30 with the sedan and 22-25 with the wagon. The wagon sat for 3 years and became a mouse habitat. Restoration was time-consuming (my 4 hours of vacuuming) and cost some money for a detailed (7 hours). So far no regrets and the car is truly an estate wagon.
I know the sedan is ready for some investment. I replaced the oil trap at about 145K and it is due again. I did not hear anything about this chronic issue by this excellent technician. That design leaves me wondering what Volvo was thinking. But it is a DIY option.
    Great video. Thanks.

Love this car. I’ve just rebuilt all the suspension and it’s fab. Getting some 17” BBS for it aswell.

Fun fact. Between 2006 and 2010 when there was an S80 with a V8 AWD engine, the same engine as in the XC90. The Swedish Secret Service (SÄPO) used this car in service until just a couple of years ago when driving around the royal family. I believe they use the BMW X5 VR6 (Armored) nowadays.
The Swedish King has one S80 V8 in his personal car collection amongst many other classic and performance cars. The King and the Prince are both petrolheads, the Prince races professionally for Porsche. One of the newest cars added to the King's personal car collection is the BMW M6 Competition.
Amongst his M6 and S80, the king has:
    Ford Mustang 1965
    Pontiac Tempest GTO Conv 1966
    De Tomaso Pantera 1971
    AC Cobra 1966
    Porsche 911 T Targa 1973

I Love my P2! 2009 XC90 V8 called "Bláinn" (old Norse word for dark or black etc)
280,000km, 2nd owner, still looks, runs and drives beautifully!...only mods done:
-T5 oil cooler added to the Aisin Tranmission (why they didnt add one to the V8s but all other models? is a mystery to me)
-Set of Inovit 19in rims with 255/55 goodyears fitted (such a MASSIVE improvement in handling from the standard narrow 18in)
-errrr...And a set of "Prancing Moose" badges on the sides and one on the bum (the yellow Ferrari looking ones lol)
Daily use for school runs, pack it with 4 kids a dog, all our gear and a trailer...that yamaha V8 just doesnt care! (but get the trans mod done to avoid overheating if stuck in traffic)

I have a 04 volvo s60 2.5t fwd auto. Its a dream vehicle. Ive owned it 9yrs now and just hit 194k miles on it. It still shifts smooth and everything works and no rust. In the 9yrs of owning it. Ive only had to replace the blower motor, fuel pump, radiator and alternator. Which in 9yrs isnt much at all. I dont want to get rid of this car and get new. I know this is very reliable and will last another 200k with ease.

Found this super interesting! I just purchased a 07 xc90 v8 for $2,900 but it needs some work. I'm thinking about changing the timing cover gaskets on my own as they're leaking oil but it's an intimidating job. Love the car so far!

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  3 года назад

Glad you found it interesting, Ryan! Good deal on the XC90 V8! The timing cover gaskets can be a bit intimidating, if you don't feel comfortable doing them, there are a lot of independent Volvo shops/mechanics that should be able to handle that no problem, and cheaper than a dealership!

Great video! I've got an '07 xc70 and I really like the car. I want to keep it running as long as possible. An idea for a video I had was at what point do you call it a day on these cars, or what can you continue to fix/replace to keep them going? And how long should you expect to keep them going for when you buy them? For example, I had the CEM replaced and it cost me about half of what I paid for the car. I told that to the guy who installed my aftermarket infotainment unit and he was shocked!

Love my P2 V70! Got it for peanuts and it’s a fantastically comfy car that eats miles and has room for half a house with the seats folded lol.
Mine has the D5 with the auto, not the tiptronic version sadly.
Get 50 MPG easily, and has more torque than the T5’s (2.3 and 2.4.) Impresive considering it ‘only’ has 163 bhp.
And even pulls welll to 4000 rpm (redline is 4500) Also a 5-cylinder so love the engine more than I thought.
Interior is solid, all blonde interior as well so is roomy and feels spacious. Even the standard seats are fantastic in terms of comfort. Exterior has no rust and is solid underneath. Well apart from the bushings that need a going over lol.
Interior quality, engine having no oil leaks or issues, smooth transmission, and a good sound system makes it a perfect daily, and you can’t sense that it has 250K miles until you look at the odometer. And
Have been doing a lot of maintenance, but it’s soon good for another 250K miles. Your videos have helped me a lot on certain aspects.
    Keep em coming 😁

Hey, thank you for this Video!
I have got one of these S60 T5 (B5244T5) with 260 hp (totally original) build in 2006. You told us about modification and a good fitting of the S60R parts. Can you recommend the exchangement of parts or would you better leave it as it is, if you want to have it as a powerful but at first as a long lasting street car? If you wanted to increase the boost, which parts would you exchange? Do you know some projects or at least one?
Everyone hypes the R, but nearly no one knows this strong high pressure turbo charged 2.4 liter engine. It is a really crazy car, because it is only front weel driven with this power and you need much less fuel than the R because you don't loose that much power in the Transmission.
Thank you for your answer! 🙂

Thank you so much for the great video! There is a reason I always go to your site for parts! I'm looking at a 2005 XC90 V8 with 43K Miles on it. It seems to be an outlier with such low mileage that I'm struggling to figure out fair market value comp. The asking price is $17K which seems high for such an old vehicle but it should also have lots of life in it. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Great video! Google says a Volvo typically will last for 20 years, which is much better compared to 15 years of Passat. What I am wondering is how safe could they be after 10/15 years on the road? Airbags, let's say, are guaranteed for ten years to work properly, after that they need to be changed. And there is this 'metal fatigue' issue. A 2005 Volvo xc70 has 16% more metal, which is to assure safety, I guess, compared to a 2008 Forester. As you see I need ideas here. Thanks.

I've just bought a 2002 S60 2.4T in bright red and with a genuine 50K miles on the clock- one owner car- kept in heated garage its entire life. 10 grand which I think is a bargain for this vehicle. Drives like a dream - plenty of go and fabulous steering. My 80K 850 sadly pales by comparison - but I'll keep it anyway.

Great stuff. I owned a V70 MY2005 with T5 engine. After tuning it was so much better, almost 300 horsepower and much smoother @low rpm. When I had to upgrade because of the 4th kiddo, I looked and found a very nice XC90 MY2007 V8 Executive. Runs super smooth and considering the weight of the car, is pretty nimble. Can recommend both engines!

Oooh! Can't wait to hear about the XC90 problems. You know, the transmissions that start to slip at about 45K miles, the timing chains that break at about 60K miles, the leaking sun roofs, the frying alternator and voltage regulator, the sub-frame bushings that wear out at 50K miles. This is gonna be fun....
