Around here, unless you're in the bigger cities, you do not see Volvos, period. I've seen more Jaguars.
I’m a mechanic and Volvo is the car make I’ve worked on the least. I’ve worked on more Bentleys. Most common vehicle Ive worked on is Toyota only because I work at a Toyota dealer. Excluding Toyota, probably a tie between Honda and Mercedes.

@@rileymcmonigle9614 My 2006 s60 T5 made 250 horse 240 torque. The R versions made 300 HP. I think the new ones follow this power standard but with a 4 cyl dual charged?
Not super fast, but quick enough to use the boost to pass the other stock cars when you need to.
@@Average_CoD_Clips I can only speak to Swedish red block volvos, not the ford based ones. Red blocks are endearingly slow. But the newer ones such as yours while admittedly less Swedish in nature are very competent machines 👍

I have a 2008 S60 and it’s by a mile the most reliable and comfortable car I’ve ever owned. Probably wouldn’t buy any other brand going forward.

I would make sure that you replace the timeing belts on schedule or when you buy it cause bent valves will result if the belt breaks.
Just bought a 2008 S60 aswell 2.5T, sadly its been parked for over a year since I couldnt find anyone in my area to fix the timing belt, however i found someone a week ago and today they told me the car is ready! Im really excited to drive that thing again

A proud owner of a 2000 C70 T5 Coupe here. You can buy every 5-bangers powered Volvo's eyes closed, from 140 to 300 hp. One of the best engine ever.
can you? have any other people experienced head gasket leaks in their engines? my T5 is leaking exhaust into the coolant reservoir with no signs of coolant in the oil judging from the dipstick and oil filler cap. I put in some head gasket sealer to hopefully minimize the issue until I can get it fixed. idk if this is common or not but I have hope for it.
@@christianhudspeth3338 Mine had this happen after a heating fan failure & subsequent overheat. Same deal with the exhaust leak into coolant with no vise-versa. Ended up replacing the head gasket and rebuilding the head along with it, runs like a top now. Big pain though. If you're up for it, Robert DIY has a guide here on YT.
The P2 2.5T/R engines are risky (based on maintenance/modifications). You don’t want the dreaded cracked block.
The best Volvos to buy are simply the Pre- Chinese Volvos with the Red Block Engine which is basically before 1997 as that's all you need to know .....end of story . Your Volvo is Chinese .

I had a 1985 Volvo 740 turbo. Was reliable as hell and pretty fast. And fun to drift In the snow. Wish I still had it
I had 1985 Volvo 740GLE - fun, reliable except the bio degradable wiring harness that Volvo experimented with. I had the harness replaced- the car was totaled after a 50MPH T-bone on the driver's side. I walked away.
@@gordonmccracken1209 I had the same problem with the wiring harness. Once fixed it easily with plug and play was a awesome car. And never had a issue I just knew about the wiring so bought a amazon replacement just in case

I've had a 1992 940 for 11 years, bought for like $600 and is still going.
Now I recently got a pristine 960 wagon (same year model) with the 3L in-line 6 engine that will be my next daily driver when I need extra space. It was quite a bit more expensive $6000, but spotless of rust in the chasis and under the hood around the engine.
Very reliable cars.
Adrian should definitely get a radio show or into voiceover work because he has an amazing voice. Great pitch, cadence and pronunciation. Once he started talking I couldn't stop listening until he was done.
The only slip in pronunciation was Bertone. It is bertonay, not bertone. Same sound as Quattroporte which was correctly pronounced.
Minor criticism though and otherwise the information was correct.
I had one of those 2001 s40s when I was a teenager. Repairs were always minor and easy. Super durable and drove amazingly and got superb fuel economy. When I was a teenager I had a horrible Freeway accident where I was basically forced over and nailed a wall head on at nearly 60. My 2 passengers and I walked away with very minor scrapes and bumps. Super safe car for the Era and a complete hoot to drive.
The sheer amount of calm in this video is just A+
My S40 T5 is 18 years old and looks new. No mechanical or body issues. All maintenance has been kept up and it runs well.
Same here. The 5 cylinder turbo is a great engine. My s40 t5 looks and drives like new.
I had a 2001 Volvo S80 and the transmission gave out at 278k miles in 2020. I bought it in 2014 with 130k miles for $700 and well i definitely got my moneys worth. Only main components i had to swap out from wear n tear were the front suspension/struts and just did its typical maintenance.

I own a 2003 Volvo s40 as my first car and have had it for a few years, extremely reliable, rides smooth like butter and has all the luxury accents! Easy on maintenance and fun to drive as my daily :)

@@nosslraK the suspension only started to feel a little loose around 460 000 km but not too bad even then. We did replace it though because we had an extra suspension kit lying around :P

We had a 1993 940 Turbo sedan years ago for our daughter. Wonderfully tight & rigid body, ultra responsive turbocharged & intercooled red block 4 cylinder, and classic rear wheel drive. Very simple layout and easy to service.
Adrian is an impeccable communicator.

I am a bit of a Volvo nut. About eight years ago, I bought a 1997 Volvo 850 GLT turbo sedan with 65,000 original miles on it. It has like 155,000 miles on it now. Then I found a rare silver 1998 Volvo S 70 T5 M with 101,000 miles on it seven years ago. It now has 155,000 miles on it. Most recently two years ago I found an emerald green 1999 S 70 AWD with 72,000 miles on it, which now has 85,000 miles on it.
Proud owner of a 2005 s40 over here! She’s proven extremely reliable and I always feel safe in her. (I say “her” because she’s really developed into her own entity... her name is Bean and I got her a custom plate that says “BEEEAN.”)
One of the best looking models Volvo has produced in my opinion. I'm considering getting one myself. A flaw that I've heard about though, is poor quality of the seat upholstery. I have seen a lot of ads where the fabric on the driver seat has torn/cracked a bit.

@@manchesterexplorer8519 - It's not chinese you idiot, Geely (Chinese Company) bought volvo from ford in 2010. The company was still directed and ran by swed's, but ford managed them and now geely does, both ford and geely has done good for volvo technologically and cosmetically.

I've own a 2004 XC90 2.9L T6 AWD with almost 300 hp on a twin turbo engine for 15 years, the one with the GM transmission, it had an issue with the tranny valves, no other issues whatsoever and still is the best SUV I've ever driven, very robust, extremely comfortable, excellent and powerful ride, stable and safe, I figure proper maintenance is the key, even if tranny goes away it's very worthy of a replacement, same goes for the S80 T6 AWD, the driving experience in that car on any weather is something a very few sedans have.

I've been waiting for this episode ever since you started doing these, huge Volvo fans here in my family myself included, my dad got a fairly new 240 back in the day from his parents and ever since that day it snowballed into us having 4 (09-18) Volvos, 2 wagons and 2 sedans on our yard, basicly before i was born and after i was born we've only had Volvos, outside of 1 Mercedes 98/99 E wagon that my father just grew to hate since it apparently only had leaks and freaks, and never went back.
How have the newer ones been reliability wise?
@@jpatricksimmons9562 my dad has had his 18 S90 since new with the base model diesel engine, not sure if its offered in America at all, but so far he has had to do pretty much nothing to it if anything and it servers purpose as the nice car they take abroad many a thousand kilometers at a time, and my sister also bought herself a 2020 model with a 190 hp diesel and hasnt had any issues with powertrain or otherwise

The S60 diesel was a very economical and good looking car. Also the Wolseley 6, with 2200cc 6 pot engine managed a decent manual (and auto ) box underneath the cross ways engine. Only trouble it was only a 4 speed. Exceptionally comfortable.

Proud owner of a 1999 V70 non-turbo and a 2011 C30 T5. Fun cars and they're fairly easy to work on. The Volvo community is great too. Really friendly and knowledgeable people.
It's funny. Because here in Australia volvo drivers got a reputation as being some of the worst drivers. Then they become known as top hat drivers cars (dickhead). The reputation was so bad that TWO families in my extended family swapped to other vehicles (one mitsubishi the other ford) just so they wouldn't get looked down on.... SERIOUS. Now there's essentially NO community and you get pristine 90s and early to mid 2000s models for a few hundred dollars. Essentially they sell for the price of the tires on them. FOR REAL. I'm pondering buying them to strip for parts and engine/tranny just to send it all to the USA.
@@OffGridInvestor They don't get looked down upon too much anymore. Subaru/Mazda drivers are worse here now. I think the UK had the same issue. Except now it's been changed to Peugeot.
Hey Wizard! Just wanted to share my experience. I owned a 2001 Volvo s60 base model and a 2004 Volvo xc90 2.5T and I never had a single issue with them. I actually loved them to death. Love this videos cause I learn a lot. Keep them coming, please!
I've heard you should look out for a PCV problem with those engines, do you think so too?
@@heckraiserrr413 yes, upon buying my 2001 v70 2.4t within 10 hours of driving the car blew a front cam seal and promptly drained all the oil (purchased at 92k mi for 2800 in silver) I was aware of an issue and pulled over before the head and or motor overheated/warped and had it towed the remaining distance to my mechanic. The breather box (pcv valve) had a clogged line and that allowed for positive crank pressure to build inside the engine, blowing out the cam seal and you know the rest. So the long answer to your question is yes absolutely this is a known and typical problem for the p2 generation of volvos

We had one S80 with the 2.9 engine sometime ago. Apart from some issues I wasn't aware of (I was 9-10 years old at the time), it was a bulletproof car. We eventually sold it in 2009 and bought a Camry.
Never owned a Volvo but I've always loved them just seem like great cars and some of them age so well
I loved the 240's and 740's from the 80's and early 90's. Those still had a simple front engine rwd layout which made it surprisingly easy to work on, and they were very sturdy. Like the Mercedes diesels from that era, it's not uncommon to see a 240 or 740 with over 200-300K miles on them because of their toughness. Plus in my opinion, one of the ultimate sleeper cars of all time is still the 740 turbo wagon with the manual transmission.
My brother bought an 89 740 N/A 5 speed. Turboed it and put 850R injectors in it. Thing buggies pretty good!

Great points made in this video! I have a Volvo myself, an S80 2.4 5cyl engine with 170hp. Amazing car, one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven.
How has the upkeep been?
I loved both of my seven series. I had a 740 in a 780. Super easy to work on. Temperamental with electronics but they were easy to diagnose. Good times. Tell me everything I needed to know about car electrical systems, Voltmeter, amps etc.

I'll give you the tip. Just get any of the ones with the inline 5.
The 2012 S60 T5s had widespread oil consumption issues. Other than that all of the 5 cylinders were great.
Ill give you a better one; Just get any with rwd and fuel injected redblock engine
The early 850’s were HORRIBLE. However, the late 850’s are regarded as one of the most solid Volvo’s ever built.

You forgot to Cover 2005-2010 as those were landmark years for the T5 P1 platform!! You had the V40 and V50 series and the C30 and the updated HALDEX AWD systems in manual and auto
I’ve had a 240DL, 740GLE, V40, S70 and now have an S90 T5…They are my hands down favorite car to drive. The 740 GLE almost broke me with all its issues but it’s also the one I love the most LOL!
This was an impressive sit down conversation about what Volvo cars to purchase new or used. Both were excellent, both thumbs way up.
Every single new Volvo looks and drives amazing! I was especially surprised at the amount you get in the XC40 in space, sportiness and features compared to other luxury compact SUVs.
All new cars are amazing. It's when they get out of warranty they show their true colors.

I have a volvo v40 2004 and although lots of money went into fixing existing problems due to being garaged in a humid garage it drives great :)
Lots of spot on info. Only addendums I'd make are avoid early 6cyl 960s with block porosity issues and short cam belt life. Fixed in 94 iirc. Same for gen 1 s40s, too many unusual issues like non-removable relays in CEM killing headlights, plastic upper rad hose union exploding with no warning, or ECM monitors that are very stubborn to pass if you live in an emissions inspection state

I also want to add that if youre buying a Diesel from 2011 and forward. DONT buy the D2s and D4s, they are infamously unreliable and you will have problems with your car with those engines, if you want a diesel, take the D3 or D5 options, the D5 is great powerwise but does ofc drain your tank abit faster than the D3 does. But the engines are reliable and a helluva fun experience in the long run!

I have a 2012 Volvo XC70 T6 and it's been fantastic for the near 9 years we've had it. Good advice in here as I had some 80s 4-cylinder Volvos and they were great too.
I gotta say out of all the Volvos you mentioned I think my favorite one is probably the 760 turbo brick with a stick that Hoovie has. Those things are tanks and basically last forever!

I had a 2000 Volvo S70 Turbo. It is now 2021 and just donated it. I loved that car. No engine problems. The electric system at that time was very poor,( window motors, door locks, and consistent bulb failures). Besides those issues it was a very dependable car. I just a bought a low mileage 2019 S60 T6 and I love, love it.

I have a C30 2.0. It is actually easy to work with. Easy to change oil, filters, coolant, and recently changed the water pump.

My grandparents are actually giving me their 94 960 and I loved driving it truly one of the best handling cars in my books

Ive always wanted a 2000 V70 R. They are SO COOL but they are super rare and hard to find.
I've always preferred the S60R but I still wouldn't mind putting the R drivetrain in my v70.

Thanks Adrian, I missed this video 7 months ago but I bought a V40 from 2001 and I love it! The automatic does downshifts a tad too much (even when accelerating) but for the rest it’s great! The front coil spring did break, just like you warned :)
The best Volvos to buy are simply the Pre- Chinese Volvos with the Red Block Engine which is basically before 1997 as that's all you need to know .....end of story . Your Volvo is Chinese .
