Had a V70 D5 and it did 235,000 miles. Utterly indestructible, never wanted anything except its normal service. Can't say that of any other car I've had. Very comfy, quite fast, economical for a 2.4, was quieter than the e-class Merc estate I had (ride not as good though). The interior design was good Swedish distinctive and cool. The pop up screen was silly but all the modern stuck on flat screens are stupid. Hard to fault these outstanding cars.
Volvo was owned by Ford when this car was designed and launched. If only Ford had put a bit more effort into their cars we might still have Ford cars and not just SUVs!
Not my experience. My dads 2012 Passat is in much better condition at roughly the same kilometers. It also never broke down unlike the V70. Both owned new.
10 years time you will be in a Volvo and look back on this video..lol. Volvo drivers in general want to be as far away from a BMW as possible. My dad has a 10 plate v70 R design and had a brand new m sport 3 series for 3 days and couldn't wait to give it back. !! Corporate and uncomfortable think he said...he made sure he indicated more than normal too 😆😆
I like it. We didn't think much of it back in 08 when we tested it, especially compared to our 940, but now, when cars look rubbish and keep breaking down with their idiot electronics, the V70 / XC70 stand out as solid workhorses.
Hi! I have the same one, a D5 from 2011 also. Very happy with it, comfy, loading space, not to complicated to handle and everything works and stays in condition. So, no broken plastics, buttons, mid console etc. It happened to the previous model a lot more ( 2001-2008 ). Besides that, the D5 engine is one of the best Volvo ever built, smooth and powerful even with manufacturer specs. What I do not like is the behavior on the front suspension, bit sensitive but depends on the quality of the tyres nut even than on very low speed the car choose to run away to right or left. I changed the complete suspension and every part that is related to the steering behavior but more people noticed this issue over the year. On the highway this Swedish kind of tank is your best friend. 70 liters of diesel will bring me from my city in the Netherlands ( Den Bosch ) over the Austrian border with ease. Love that! Service the car well and it will service you for a long, very long time if you want. Believe me, Mercedes-Benz/BMW and especially Audi is lot more stress and money to maintain on the same level if you compare the costs.
Hi Lucy: Cars are for a) comfort, b) safety and c) reliability. On those metrics, Volvos are some of the best cars around. Anything else is just conversation - for e.g. in car review videos that have no basis in real life :)
my girlfriend had this car. she NEVER changed oil, added fluids and maintained car, because she tought "you dont need to do it"...Once all started leaking, squeking, breaking, so she went to mechanic, and they told her, its gonna be like, 2000eur to fix and replace broken things. She did another woman move, and sold it, just to give 15,000eur for 2018 Skoda :)
@uroskostic8570 My wife is similar. She does the yearly oil change but that's about it. If it wasn't for me she'd be driving on bald tyres for example. Lol. Luckily she drives a Honda so it keeps going despite her neglect.
@@uroskostic8570 my missus is the same, she never checks the fluid levels always saying "I need to top my oil up because the reminder light has come on"! I must've told her 50 times. She doesn't even put diesel in it until the light comes on. Every time she parks it she leaves the heater fan running flat out and the radio on straining the battery when she wants to start it going through 2 new batteries a year. She never getsbtired of telling anyone who will listen that she's "an independent woman" yet every time I try to criticise her for neglecting her car all I hear is "that's a man's job"! Boils my piss.
Cars are for a) performance, b) pleasure and c) appearance. Comfort? Go sit in your sofa. Safety? Become an average driver and don't crash. Reliability? Service your car.
@@miljororforsprakpartiet290 The Volvo has those things also. Point is you cannot drop off the kids in your sofa. And servicing does not guarantee high reliability - just ask Land Rover owners.
Hi Lucy, I run a 2013 V70 with the D4 engine and manual gearbox. It has also been Polestar tuned to improve mid range performance. It is not a sprinter but it's not a sluggard either. The manual box means that I can have a few revs on before I launch and makes it surprisingly good for nipping into small gaps in traffic. No turbo lag. Top speed is a claimed 137mph although I've never had it that fast. Road tax is still only £35/year. (!) Short journeys I manage over 40mpg with a lot more on motorway runs. The pop up screen had disappeared by 2013 and replaced with an all pupose central screen. Overall I absolutely love it. It suits my lifestyle and my hobbies. The big heated leather seats are so comfortable that my wife says that she wishes that she could lift hers out and take it indoors. As you mentioned the turning circle is pathetic but I can live with that.
The only seats more comfortable than a Volvo are in the old and sadly discontinued Saab models. I run a V70 for long distances, because I can haul a ton of gear and get out after a day's driving raring to go, instead of grunting and groaning. I also run an XC70 with winter tyres (basically a 4WD jacked up V70) for when I go to my place in Sweden. I've owned Audi, BMW, Saab and countless others and nothing comes close as an overall combination of comfort, utility and safety. Some people don't realise that the 2 litre D3 V70 is surprisingly fuel frugal and very low (£30 a year) road tax. An inexpensive diesel tune improves engine response and fuel economy. For context, I also run a Land Rover and an Audi A5 3.0 TDI QUATTRO S LINE, but I spend far more time in the V70 because I prefer its comfort and flexibility.
We also love our XC70 and have been spoiled by its comfort, sound system and reliability on long drives. I've been looking at Land Rovers as a second car, are there any that might match the Volvo in those areas?
@@Luckywynne In a word, no. If you ask on the forums you will get a lot of fanboys telling you how awesome all things Land Rover are. Objectively, they are expensive to buy, expensive to own/maintain/run, but if you need something that is seriously good off-road and comfortable for long journeys then maybe the LR Discovery could be worth a look. If you don't intend doing any fairly serious off-road stuff you probably don't need one. Again, speaking objectively, Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Shogun are both far nore reliable. I am generalising here, obviously. I won't ever buy another Land Rover. My next vehicle of that sort is likely to be a VW Touareg or Toyota Land Cruiser. The Touareg is lovely to drive for long distances and is surprisingly good off road. The Toyota will go absolutely anywhere, and get you back. Good luck !
I have driven a few of this gen. Volvos and noted some things: - when considering the 2.4 diesels, I would recommend to go for the AWD model instead of the FWD. Applies especially to the 2009+ two-stage sequential turbo engines, otherwise it's too easy to spin the wheels. - manual gearboxes got better after 2011 facelift, less woolly shifting action. 2011 also saw major overhaul for the Aisin 6-speed auto boxes, newer ones are smoother and more reliable. I vaguely remember the newer 2011+ 6-speed autos also using different oil, but don't quote me on that. - 2011 also saw the introduction of new reduced-stroke inline 5 engines, now 2.0 litre. I would avoid these until 2013, when the next iteration of 2.0 inline 5 engines arrived - 2013 brought last facelift to V70, new instrument cluster, improved 2.0 inline 5 engines and improved mapping for the 6-speed auto. This combo would be my pick for V70 from that gen. - 2014 brought new VEA inline 4 engines and while they are powerful and quite frugal, I remember endless EGR issues (part was redesigned several times) + issues with various leaks. On the plus side - new 8-speed Aisin auto box, unfortunately mated exclusively to 4-cylinder models, is great. As said, my pick would be 2013+ 2.0 inline 5 with 6-speed automatic, but decent ones are hard to find by now. Next would be 2.0 inline 4 D4 with 8-speed auto from the last production years. Regular maintenance is a must with these cars, walk away from any Volvo that has sketchy maintenance history. It's just not worth the effort, I learned this the hard way. Besides that, these are excellent long distance cruisers for families: reasonably quiet, comfortable suspension, good fuel economy, plenty of cargo space, good ground clearance and of course the seats. 🙂 Note that used Volvos tend to have much higher mileage compared to similarly sized competitors, at least in my area.
I thinking of trading in my Mercedes 220d estate for a V70, non diesel, because the punishment of the Dutch government to own a clean ad blue diesel car. Which one is a good choice, there so many types and i do not want one with Ford engine i’m thinking of a 2015 to 2017 model
I recently became a volvo (C70) owner for the first time and I love it! Well made, well designed, (surprisingly) powerful, and comfortable. The folding metal roof is a work of art and works perfectly. It doesn't have the kudos of the German brands but because it does everything so well I don't care! I'd definitely buy another volvo 👍
She’ll grow up one day, I drove a sierra cosworth at her age lol and it was my only car, I love my Volvo daily now ( though I still have other “ toys” and it’s that point I think she’s missing tbh, ie I have some fast and classic stuff too, but for day in day out, picking up stuff and going to the shops etc, it’s my Volvo estate😊)
I had a C70 for 2 years. . . . Black paint with red leather interior. Absolutely beautiful and lovely to drive. You will need an air dam for when you have the roof down. . . . And watch out for the passenger door trying to open if going over bumpy ground. Other than that. . . It's a perfect car, as long as you don't need to accommodate kids and dogs !
Over the years I have owned the old Saab 900 Turbo, fabric seats and 5 doors, then a 3 door grey Viggen which I soent a fortune on tuning. Now i have a XC60 D5 R Design , a beast of a car that hasnt gone wrong in 6 years. My fishing car is a 2006 P2 XC70 Lux. That runs on all season tyres, does muddy fields and tracks, and then will do 40mpg on the motorway cruising at 80. Great comfort and an element of quirky cool about it. Mine is 185bhp and very pokey.
I had one of these for a few years. Used it for a lot of long trips to the highlands, emptying a couple of houses and runs to the tip. Seats so comfortable and you can fit soooooooo much in the boot.
Still drive a P1 Volvo V70 that is now 25 years old. The older cars of the era when Volvo was its own company were made a lot better than the current models. The engine is just run it at 170K miles 🙂
Welcome to the clan brother! I have a older model 940 GLE Lols , it's been an utterly incredible car. 30 years old and more reliable than most of the families other branded cars (Can't Lie my brothers Toyota trucks have been excellent as well) . I absolutely love the car for what it is, an absolute pleasure to work on and maintain, the low pressure B230 LPT is a gem of an engine.
I worked for a Volvo agency in my youth and my late father who was a veterinary surgeon drove them for many years. Back in the early 80’s they were amongst the best executive cars available. If quality, durability and safety are your thing they are the perfect family car. The 100 series and 200 series that I am familiar with were rear wheel drive and had a great turning circle.
My XC70 is very similar, as a geriatric although I still like hooligan cars the Volvo is extremely practical. The satnav is very dated now (although mine has a new data disc) but it is great that you can leave it retracted. The turning circle is poor but it does not seem outrageous for a car of that wheelbase. I was a teenager when I first drove Volvo estates, they were not exciting then and mine is still not exciting now. What it is superb for though is doing the things an estate car should do, fetching and carrying in comfort without stress. FWIW my XC70 typically does about 35mpg with the same engine as that V70 but with the added weight and drag of the rear differential. I am not a lifetime Volvo fanboi but the longer I spend with mine the more I see that someone has thought about the design details.
i have one of those, a xc70 d5 4wd, i was not a volvo fan either, i've been a merc/bmw dude for years, but what i've learned about the volvos having two of them is that they are cars you grow in to, when you start to use them on a daily basis you kinda start to appriciate all kind of little things you notice for being done well or things about it that do what they do especially well, one thing i like about the 70 series is that they dont try to make it sporty, its a family wagon version of a car thats only made to me luxurius, its soft, quiet and relaxing to drive, its more practical than about just anything and its not trying to be something else. mine is used as a family hauler for two kids and two dogs. and it does that job so well that we have kept on to it much longer than we ever planned to, and have no plans of letting it go just dont expect it to be a bmw, its not trying to be
Volvo has dipped their toes in the power segment a couple of times mid 90s to 07 with 850 T-5R, 850 R, numerus V70 R, S70 R and S60 R. Quite limited special runs and most likely highly sought after today
I had a 2010 V70 1.6 DRIVe here in Scotland not sure how much power it had not a lot but it was a great car for motorway driving and very economical it was a company vehicle as I worked for and Scandi outdoor clothing company at the time, it carried lots of kit in the back and sat on the motorway all day long at 70mph and returned lower 50s mpg easy , it never complained just did the work it was designed to do, it had an amazing sound system and those seats were typical Volvo comfortable, the car had a Volvo towbar fitted as we needed this to tow trailers to events and again the car towed a small 750kg trailer to corporate events, it was not a quick car but I loved it, the company then replaced it with an all singing all dancing Honda Accord estate with a 2.2 Diesel it was a more powerful car but was not anywhere near as capable or comfortable as the V70 which ate the miles with ease.
9 years on my current V70 D5 manual. Goes like a train, 70+ mpg on a run, up to 1000 miles on a tank. 400 mile trip and step out of it feeling fresh as a daisy. And it will be around when other 'high end' cars have been scrapped. 10 Volvos in the last 40 years and beat everything else I owned hands down. And if you want to get thrown back in your seat, try a T5R. Cruise in comfort - you will learn to appreciate the quality and safety no other brand gives. The Police love them, all the motorway cops have or want their own. In a motorway multi car shunt, the Volvo occupants would just open the doors and walk away from the carnage. Only niggle is the electrically assisted steering, which requires your full attention, I find it a bit too light.
I think you will find the power steering pump is electrically driven, rather than an engine driven belt, the idea is it improves fuel economy. @@WestfieldFreshAir
I have a high mileage V70 T6. Three litre twin turbo ex police fast response four wheel drive and chipped. It will rev to 7k revs, and geared for 170 MPH, comfortable seats, carries a full sized door in the back. What more do you need, it will corner pretty hard, and accelerate like a rocket. try one.
I've had a 'dawn blue' 2004 V70 D5 SE since 2021, I paid £500 for it and use it as my Winter car. Honestly it's amazing for the money. Comfy heated leather seats, economical (36mpg average), great load space, lovely sounding 5 cyl turbodiesel with the smooth geartronic box, fantastic sound system and it's prolonging the life of my Impreza WRX to boot.
Nice car Lucy. I think the more reliable ones would be the 163 or 185 hp version diesels, but in general if you do the upkeep/ maintenance as with every other car, these Volvos gan go on and on, including the petrol ones, which I own one myself. 09 S60 2.5t. Love from the Netherlands and a merry Xmas and all the best in happiness and health for 2024.
I drive an older v70 from 1997 ... just the normal 144hp 2,4L engine... it consumes a lot of Fuel 😂 +10L/100km and it only has 5 gears ... as a german thats a little sad. I miss a 6th gear for the Autobahn... but every time i get in ... everytime i open and Close the doors it feels like a Tank 😂 plus ... it has a nice 5 Cylinder sound
I was looking at getting the 2.4 petrol version I wanted a D5 but they were so bloody expensive. I thought the savings of around £5k would pay for a lot of fuel
@@chrishart8548 for me, 2004 and earlier are the best Volvos due to the sell outs into other hands, definitely pre-chinese... a diesel V70 D5 2.4 are as cheap as £1000, 163HP which will stage 1 remap to 197hp and gives much better fuel economy... 54mpg combined and up to 80mpg if driven 60mph max on a long run... parts are cheap if you self service...
@richardharrold9736 7 series are very lovely cars and not too modern it's the modern stuff that I just don't really get. Alot of the German cars just lost the touch at the end of the noughties. I also despise the E36 and 46 I just don't get it at all.
@richardharrold9736 I know quite a few people who had an E46 my mum also had one never liked it and also e36 which was never a fan. The e30 2.5 she had was a lovely car and had a lovely engine sound aswell. They definitely don't make em like they used to.
Hi Lucy, Very enjoyable and watchable video. I think basically what you are saying is this Volvo is boring. It’s never been marketed as a drivers car, so it’s unlikely to appeal to enthusiastic drivers. I hope you will do more reviews like this one. It’s great to get your personal opinion on popular cars which certainly is not boring.
Depends on your frame of reference for "boring". The V70's biggest crime is that it just does the job competently without any stand out "character traits". If it were a person it'd probably be the one you'd want in Government as they'd just get on with it, no fuss. It's biggest crimes are that among a lot of Volvo cognoscenti, its too much of a Ford and not enough of a real Volvo (unlike the previous gen P2 platform model) and that, to the populace at large, it's "just" an estate car and not an aspirational SUV.
I’m a car enthusiast, I absolutely love my P2 V70. 2.4 T. Comfy, quick, reliable and extremely practical. As a owner of a large breed dog, this car is perfect for me. Even before i got my V70 I’ve loved Volvos. The 240 estate being my favourite. For car enthusiasts, it’s all personal taste, we don’t all love the same cars lol.
My stepfather bought his V70 2,5T 2008 in 2016, his biggest repair was the shock absorbers, and breaks 2 times. i bought my V70 D5 2009 for a couple weeks ago and go smooth, here in sweden this is a huge favorite cars.
Never had a Volvo but have been a long time admirer. We did keep going back and forth between an XC60 and a X3 for my wife's car recently but ended up going for an X3. I do keep looking at S60, V60 or V50 for myself at some point. Great video btw, the editing is far beyond my capabilities.
@@MigV40 Lucy as also seen the benefits of the classic Volvo, just like yourself. Lucy as posted another video recently addressing the change of heart towards the idea of a Volvo.
@@valskraacapo720 that’s awesome, but could I ask a cheeky question, what’s your insurance like for an 18 year old. I only ask our son is 19 and would love a Volvo
I used to have a V70 T6 2008 but it started to have too many issues, like serpentine belt, parking sensors, engine light etc. Now I drive a Toyota Auris and couldn't be happier. The Volvo was a pleasure to drive so if you want comfort: buy a Volvo. If you want to save money: go japanese :-)
I hear what you're saying but it sounds like you got unlucky there. I've had multiple volvos which were just as reliable as my toyota's. A lot of people will state similar experience.
Great review and never too honest, in my opinion. I prefer hearing original thoughts versus simply stating what so many other reviewers say, so nice job. Also, your outfit is incredible and you look amazing.
We have had our 57 plate for the last 3 years and still looking forward for every long trip. At my point in life now is the best all rounder that money can buy. Yes is not a very engaging car but trust me it can cruise at high speeds quite well. Ours has nearly 200k and yes I can see some of your points but it was a 2k car which required nothing but regular maintenance. Is just the car that every family should have as the base trips car and another to just cover all the other points like being quick and unreliable ahaha.
Love my V70 D3/4 2013. 5 cylinder tunes, great space and design, reliable, economical etc. Very much a keeper. Have had 520d 2011 handling very average, poor space and Passat 2017- good handling and better design than BMW.
I owned its great great grandmother a 1972 Volvo 145 seven seater. For 14 years taking our children on many a holiday. Only 2 litre manual with twin strombergs. But at 4000 RPM she would lift up her skirts and outpace many a 6 cylinder vehicle of that era . They are a great family car.
Ant anstead said when he was in the armed response unit in the police they had BMW, Mercedes and Volvos for response vehicles and there was a rush to get the Volvo first. If you have children they are a great place to be. The engine block is large hence poor turning circle, it was the one of the few things I didn’t like. They are very much a family barge.
Surprisingly the large engine isn't the issue with the turning circle. The S40/V50 has the same turning circle with a 4 or 5 cylinder engine and it's waaaay better then a V70. I think (but happy to be corrected) the V70 is engineered to have a poor steering lock to give the CV joints an easy time and last longer.
Loving the vids, found you on an ad on insta aha, can't believe you drove in sliders in your older videos 😂 my gf wouldn't dream of it aha. Would make a interesting video the different shoes to drive it aha
Hi Lucy. Great video. Yes agree with your thoughts on the Volvo. They are comfortable & reliable. I was thinking of buying one until I drove the BMW 318 I sport. Beautiful car. Looking forward to your next video. Mark. Thanks
I watched your Volvo videos out of order, so I'm mostly just commenting here to say that your honesty is appreciated! It's hard to trust a car review from a person who loves every single car they drive. Plus, we seem to have a similar (unhealthy) taste in vehicles. Questionable reliability, poor gas mileage, but a V8 engine attached to a manual transmission? Okay!
I was waiting on the edge of my seat for you to blaspheme my choice of transportation for the last 50 years. I came home from the hospital in a Volvo 122, learned to drive in a 240 DL and currently drive a SPA XC90 Inscription. I'm buying a V70 T5 wagon to play with sometime next week. Needless to say, I'd drive a Volvo wagon even if you hated it, but also if it was broken and annoying. Great video! 😎 🇺🇲❤️🇬🇧
Welshman living in Sweden here, I own a Volvo v70 awd, it just a safe and steady car, defiantly has the turning circle of the moon! BUT we have a tone of snow here in Sweden every year and temperatures of -20 to -30 and the Volvo just works, I can't fault it..
I have had 2 XC70's and I have to say that I have never been in a more comfortable vehicle or a more pleasing drive. Being a 4x4 they have been very useful here in the, Beautiful, Highlands of Scotland, especially during the winter months,
As I've hit my 40's these have become really appealing, I don't really care about handling or 'performance' because we have speed limits and and ever increasing number of mobile speed traps showing up near to me. I don't want a BMW, Audi or Mercedes because they all. Overpriced and driven by the sort of shallow people who are trying to look flasher than they probably are. JLR stuff is just badly made garbage. The choice is either to go Japanese or for something like this. We currently have a 1st Gen XC60 with the D5 and it's done nearly 200,000 miles and passed its Mot this month with no advisories. We have an old Ford Focus also that is nearly dead, once that goes I will need to replace it with something cheap, reliable and big enough to carry an active family of four, camping gear, bikes and a dog around, something a bit nicer than the Ford's and Vauxhalls I've always had and I don't want anything on finance or a money pit so the V70 and V60 are top of my list at the moment. My father in law had the previous gen V70 and sold it with over 500,000 miles on the clock, traded in against a nearly new BMW 330D X-Drive M Sport Touring and he now wished he had kept the Volvo because it had already done its depreciating and caused him no bother at all. I'm also someone who doesn't mind not having electric seats, it's heavier, another thing to go wrong and slower to operate than a manual operation and realistically how often would I adjust them anyway as the main driver of my car? Seems pretty needless as an option.
I have a very rare manual version with the slightly lower suspension and 18" wheels. Drives like a dream. Only trouble is it's the 1984 cc one. What it needs is an old 850R but they are silly money
Min 7 ... horizontal display angle seems to be for cars equipped with steering wheel on left side😊 Nice video and very nice moderation too, greetings from Germany ~
My first v70 2.4 built in 2001 had 450.000 km and always drove pedal to the metal. The engine was undistructable. But a beech marten ate my wirering. Now i drive the v70 t6 awd with 300hp wich is every day after 2 years of ownership with
Ha ha I love that you would never own one, but more than happy to borrow a family members whenever you need all the great attributes it provides! As an owner of one of these, I agree about the Sat Nav and never use it.The turning circle is not great due to longitudinal mounted inline 5 cylinder. But if you think thats bad never drive a previous p2 version. Other than those points I love mine. Thanks for the review.
…totally agree on how fabulous they are even though I never got to own one. I didn’t know its turning radius was that constricted due to how the engine was mounted. The one’s I own have amazing steering radius like my 1990 240 Wagon, ‘92 740 Turbo Wagon that is now my nephew’s and there is the 2016 V60 Polestar that my Mother decided to keep. So that’s good to know about the V70, Thank You.
There is a lot of things to go wrong with one of these volvo 's that's why I would never own one. I remember someone bought one for £1 but it would have cost £9k to get all the work done to make it roadworthy again
@@chrishart8548 That was a Car Throttle video and I hate to be that guy, but it was the previous generation P2 V70 not the one being discussed here. But in actual fact both are great cars.Needless to say really but this like all modern cars particularly in this class are all complicated with many things that can go wrong. Well maintained V70s don't have a bad reputation for reliability and in my experience they are reliable. I would imagine it would be much the same for any car someone is prepared to sell for £1 when you later took it to a garage who are looking for work to price up all the things they can find wrong with it.
I love my V70. My only gripe with it is the fuel economy is pretty poor at around 34mpg, but its a big heavy car with a big powerful engine and a slushmatic gearbox so you cant expect miracles. Its a wonderful cruiser, very comfortable and with the 4c suspension it actually handles better than youd think. If you can try to get a 2012 or newer because they updated the dashboard and the infotainment system. Try to avoid the very latest models with the Ford auto box though. I'd say the sweet spot is 2012-2014
I bought an xc90 2.4d5 163 2005 and a good car to drive very reliable and comfortable very solid car with no rust at all. I’ve owned BMWs Audis vw passats all had rust issues. Cost me £43 to put it through an mot and 2 advisories front pads and rear sway bar bushes not bad for an 18 year old car will never part with it
I bought a Volvo estate V50 1.6 Diesel 2010 , bought it secondhand in 2015 , was a great car had it serviced every year of my ownership, it had done 154,000 miles , I did have to buy battery, waterpump & alternator and timing belt early on , then other things like sensors which cost quite a lot , then I started having probs with E C U , E G R was renewed & things like that , then I just had a service in my 8th year having wear and tear jobs done , like brake pads ,handbrake cable , 2 new tyres , carried on for 2 weeks and warning light come on dash ( reduced engine power ) another garage trip and only to find out it was a fault with injectors or some other problem , by this time I'd had enough and sold it on , Hindsight is a wonderful thing , but it's the only Diesel I'd ever had , so I decided on something more simple like a petrol 1.2 petrol which is great cheap on everything service and M O T £160 , why pay more for a posh badge 😀

All Volvos got a facelift for the 2012 model year and then another one for the 2014 model year. In 2012 it got a new dashboard with a 8” multimedia screen and support for music through Bluetooth. In 2014 they got a fully digital driver display and a nicer gear knob. If you want stiffer suspension go for the R-design or Sport-version depending on model year. The 181-205 hp is sufficient for the car but a $/€500-700 performance upgrade of the software will give you around 280 hp which turns it to a completely different car. A comfortable and super practical sleeper. In my opinion the 2014-2018 model years are some of the best in Volvo’s history and I wish they had kept producing the 2014-2016 MY V70 and especially the XC70.
Strangely, this car has a centre console from a face lifted car. And the wheels, although genuine Volvo, are not standard for the car either. I also suspect it may be on lowering springs as it sits lower than mine. These are great cars. Whilst it’ll never be a ‘drivers car’, once you learn the dynamics it can be hustled along at a fair pace and hold its own against other ‘sportier’ cars around you. Mine has a stage 1 remap (to only around 245bhp and I’m not aware of a map that give 280bhp?) and it’s transformed the car. So much more alive and better to drive daily. 👌

sorry dear you are talking boo much and probably you have'nt had any long experience in driving volvo cars , i am driving volvo for over 22 years and telling you they are much more rail able than the all German cars i was driving before ,it goes without saying that thgey are much cheaper in cost and maintenance volvo area very good cars and much fan to drive then the the Germans cars .
I totaly agree with you about the feeling of V70. I have v70 2012 2.5T benzin/gas and as you said It was nice to sit, drive a long distance, It accelerate just awesome, but I dont have feeling of pleasure to drive it. I had Mazda 626 wagon and I loved to drive it, I could drive it just to engoy with no purpose, especially if it was snow. And I have never happend now with Volvo, just a car. Comfortable car.
2008 Volvo V70 with 6 cylinder (timing chain based) auto gearbox is an outstanding vehicle last last 100s of Ks. Great vehicle for travel to, excellent commuter. Seats like all Volvos are very comfy!
I have a 12 plate XC70 D5 manual trans all I can say is really good car I can get just over 40mpg from it, got 138K miles on it never had a major problem.

I'm looking into getting one in the next few weeks; what made you get rid of yours?
@@Jinsoku440 I fancied a change. The V70 is big and I wanted something a bit smaller. I have a soft spot for Mercs.

That's not really saying much though
Volvo was owned by Ford when this car was designed and launched. If only Ford had put a bit more effort into their cars we might still have Ford cars and not just SUVs!
@youbencowell it's not ford's fault we have SUV's people want suv's they just aren't buying the normal cars anymore,
Not my experience.
!! Corporate and uncomfortable think he said...he made sure he indicated more than normal too 😆😆
For me, it will always be a Volvo. Whether the P2 or P3 platforms, a Volvo will always take you home. My 30 year old 850 still drives like a dream.
I like it. We didn't think much of it back in 08 when we tested it, especially compared to our 940, but now, when cars look rubbish and keep breaking down with their idiot electronics, the V70 / XC70 stand out as solid workhorses.
Same with the S80. I have a 2011 S80 with the 3.2L inline 6, and it runs like a tank.
@@miljororforsprakpartiet290
The Volvo has those things also.
Good luck !
P3 V70 also came in AWD, at least the 3.2L petrol model did.
I have driven a few of this gen. Volvos and noted some things:
- when considering the 2.4 diesels, I would recommend to go for the AWD model instead of the FWD.
I would avoid these until 2013, when the next iteration of 2.0 inline 5 engines arrived
- 2013 brought last facelift to V70, new instrument cluster, improved 2.0 inline 5 engines and improved mapping for the 6-speed auto.
Note that used Volvos tend to have much higher mileage compared to similarly sized competitors, at least in my area.
I thinking of trading in my Mercedes 220d estate for a V70, non diesel, because the punishment of the Dutch government to own a clean ad blue diesel car. Which one is a good choice, there so many types and i do not want one with Ford engine i’m thinking of a 2015 to 2017 model
I have Volvo xc70 over 5 years now and never have any issue with this car. Best car ever in my life and next one will be again Volvo

She definitely got a future, after comment "after 20 mins fiddling with a knob "!! Shes a gem
Sold my 96 850 with 670,000 Km. Amazing car. Was still on the road 2yrs later.
Just bought one of these, a rare D5 manual 230bhp, it's flipping great!
I am not a lifetime Volvo fanboi but the longer I spend with mine the more I see that someone has thought about the design details.
i have one of those, a xc70 d5 4wd, i was not a volvo fan either, i've been a merc/bmw dude for years, but what i've learned about the volvos having two of them is that they are cars you grow in to, when you start to use them on a daily basis you kinda start to appriciate all kind of little things you notice for being done well or things about it that do what they do especially well,
one thing i like about the 70 series is that they dont try to make it sporty, its a family wagon version of a car thats only made to me luxurius, its soft, quiet and relaxing to drive, its more practical than about just anything and its not trying to be something else.
mine is used as a family hauler for two kids and two dogs. and it does that job so well that we have kept on to it much longer than we ever planned to, and have no plans of letting it go
just dont expect it to be a bmw, its not trying to be
Volvo has dipped their toes in the power segment a couple of times
mid 90s to 07 with 850 T-5R, 850 R, numerus V70 R, S70 R and S60 R. Quite limited special runs and most likely highly sought after today
The body on that model is simply beautiful. The car ain't that bad also ❤
That little skirt will get plenty of clicks, I like it, subbed!
Well said. Not deliberate at all.
Most definitely, I don’t really care about the car. The mini skirt and those beautiful pantyhose brought me here.
Yes Lucy my S80 D5 has the turning circle of a small planet. However the best motorway muncher going. It will go on for years.
"Small Planet" Lols brilliant!
I don't get why people say volvo is boring while they drive Vw, toyota etc which are even more boring
Imagine replacing a V70 with... an Accord?! That sucked!
It had 110BHP 240NM torque
The fact you can get insurance for Volvo's and they dont break down almost daily, are 2 major plus points........................
Really good video, and extremely well put together. Keep up the great content ❤
Are you sure the steering is electric assist? It's definitely hydraulic on my 2014MY V70 D3/4.
I think you will find the power steering pump is electrically driven, rather than an engine driven belt, the idea is it improves fuel economy. @@WestfieldFreshAir

I thought Ford called Volvo a Premium brand?
Nice car Lucy. I think the more reliable ones would be the 163 or 185 hp version diesels, but in general if you do the upkeep/ maintenance as with every other car, these Volvos gan go on and on, including the petrol ones, which I own one myself. 09 S60 2.5t.
Love from the Netherlands and a merry Xmas and all the best in happiness and health for 2024.
Actually... this 205hp is better, bc it doesn't have the swirl valves like the later 163 and 185hp has.

@@Trippenzoid 💀
Vw is boring
Depends on your frame of reference for "boring". The V70's biggest crime is that it just does the job competently without any stand out "character traits". If it were a person it'd probably be the one you'd want in Government as they'd just get on with it, no fuss. It's biggest crimes are that among a lot of Volvo cognoscenti, its too much of a Ford and not enough of a real Volvo (unlike the previous gen P2 platform model) and that, to the populace at large, it's "just" an estate car and not an aspirational SUV.
I laugh about people wanting exciting cars. Makes the great, comfy, reliable, economic used cars so much cheaper.
I’m a car enthusiast, I absolutely love my P2 V70. 2.4 T. Comfy, quick, reliable and extremely practical. As a owner of a large breed dog, this car is perfect for me.

Great review. The V50 T5 AWD 6 speed manual is interesting as it has a bit more power in a smaller estate.

Its a bit of a dad car- which is why I love it - oh and cosplaying Nordic Cool.
I have the a 2007 p2 v70 d5 se lux manual. 211,000miles Brilliant car. Practical, economical for a 2.4 diesel, best seats of any car I’ve ever had.
V70 is the GOAT estate. No contest.
Νο compared to a Subaru legacy 3.0r
Hi Lucy. Great video. Yes agree with your thoughts on the Volvo. They are comfortable & reliable. I was thinking of buying one until I drove the BMW 318 I sport. Beautiful car. Looking forward to your next video. Mark. Thanks
Sold my AMAZING SE LUX V70, bought an E280 CDI and regreted it ever since!
V70's are brilliant cars, have one over a bmw any day.
Great review, thx for all the details. Im Swedish myself and im not that much of a V70 guy. Big box.
gorgeous love that demo
They’re lovely a V70. Regards, Sid. Not sideways Sid. Just 80 year old Sid from Wakefield
I have had 2 XC70's and I have to say that I have never been in a more comfortable vehicle or a more pleasing drive. Being a 4x4 they have been very useful here in the, Beautiful, Highlands of Scotland, especially during the winter months,
Im curious if the awd T6 is more appealing now.. But you've almost killed it for me.. Thanks for the honest review.
Ive got a facelift 2012 R-design D5 and even after 290000 km it still drives as new. Best car I’ve had.
I think the car is really nice. Lucy is nice too!
Nice review!
You look very nice, nice boots also 🥰
IS IT MORE COMFORTABLE THAN THE RANGE?
Hmm tough one - I am always more comfortable in a RR
Good, honest review ! - Love it !
All the Volvo’s in my family are pre 99, love them.
I have a very rare manual version with the slightly lower suspension and 18" wheels. Drives like a dream. Only trouble is it's the 1984 cc one. What it needs is an old 850R but they are silly money
Min 7 ... horizontal display angle seems to be for cars equipped with steering wheel on left side😊
Nice video and very nice moderation too,
greetings from Germany ~
My first v70 2.4 built in 2001 had 450.000 km and always drove pedal to the metal. The engine was undistructable. But a beech marten ate my wirering. Now i drive the v70 t6 awd with 300hp wich is every day after 2 years of ownership with
I still have my 2002 v70 nearly 300.000 one breakdown . Love it
Ha ha I love that you would never own one, but more than happy to borrow a family members whenever you need all the great attributes it provides!
Those are great cars you've owned. Particularly the 740 turbo.
Lovely cars these are! Nice review
@@sipowell85 the centre console looks to be the standard one for the 2008-2011 model year, or? But it seems to be a top tier speced version, Summum or the equivalent equipment level in the market in which it was sold.
Hi Lucy maybe a shorter skirt next time
Volvos make brilliant cars. Powerful, comfortable and miles ahead with features
sorry dear you are talking boo much and probably you have'nt had any long experience in driving volvo cars , i am driving volvo for over 22 years and telling you they are much more rail able than the all German cars i was driving before ,it goes without saying that thgey are much cheaper in cost and maintenance volvo area very good cars and much fan to drive then the the Germans cars .
Its not all about the driving its about the owning
And yes they are most comfortable!!!
Blimey there some driving shoes Lucy !
I've never driven one of these things, but the first thing I thought regarding the sat/nav screen being tilted is maybe to avoid glare?
I have a 12 plate XC70 D5 manual trans all I can say is really good car I can get just over 40mpg from it, got 138K miles on it never had a major problem.
call me nuts but this must be one of the best cars ever made
have a 2004 d5 v70 that has been remapped, if you want a tank and have no desire to impress anyone. get one. strong cars. it is the new volvo 240 in Norway. very stylish with all the extra trim you can fit on it.
Cute chick ‘experiences it for the first time’. Radical
