- In today's video I look at the second & third generation Volvo V70 to see which one is best and provide an in depth review on both cars! These cars have been in my family for years so I do love a V70 (call me an old man) :)

I was hoping to hear more about the difference in practicality, boot size, comfort, noise, ride, handling, reliability. Very little tangible comparison happening.......just sharing feedback

Didn’t really tell you very much about the gen3 cars other than the T6 engine in a different car from what he was driving. Disappointing video.
For reliability second gen is better👌
The petrol 5 cylinder is pretty bullet proof as well. The paint on these cars is incredible. Mine is 20 years old , wash it twice a year , and not a speck of rust , and I drive on the salt drenched winter roads in Sweden. In Sweden we usually refer to the V70n as the last real Volvo before Ford had too much of a say.
P2 and P3 is mostly during Ford or after Ford had its influence. Very unfortunate.
The second generation V70 was my first Volvo and I have been in love with Volvo’s ever since.

I have a 15 year old V70.. I've never driven anything like it.. Quality, comfort, strength, reliability, and good pulling power.. It sais on car log book 185bhp and it feels every bit of it.. Love my VOLVO.. PETE.
I've had the gen 2, now with gen 3.
Gen 2 (163hp, manual ) Very economical, 48 to 55 real MPG, full to tank full, A and B roads (no traffic jams). Cruises at 80 no probs but careful if much faster as clutch slave cyl can overheat and burst seal causing clutch fail. Tow's well (I've had 1.7 tonnes :)) turning circle poor, a pain on ferries! Goes on forever, top engine mount a bit weak, go faster box on ECU cheap and ok. (One injector failed after 40K miles with this possible cause). Load space best. Did 120k miles in it. Had 210k when sold.
Gen 3 (205hp) manual, more torque :) have towed 2.5 tonnes (with care) MPG 42 to 47 on a run if careful

That makes me feel ancient. Passed mine in 1981 - back when they were making flint spears ! I love big comfortable wagons too. Found the Volvos very overpriced for the year I was looking at, opted for Skoda estate instead. Solid car and cheaper running costs.

Passed mine in 1992 in a 1.2 Nova. Then insured on my dad's 1987 pre facelift Ford Sierra 1.8 L. That car however DID oversteer lol. Comedy handling during the winter months. 🤣
1981! I got my license when I turn 16 in 1969. I learned to drive in a 1950 Chevrolet '3 on the tree'. And then took my test in a 1956 Chevy.😊
My ´06 AWD 2.5T 2nd gen with 209 bhp has 265000 miles on it and still going strong. Petrol versions, too, go forever, if maintained properly. What a fine car !
Got a 2006 V70 and a 2015 V70. We use them as daily drivers me and my wife.. We live in Sweden... Take care - stay safe!

My 1st ever volvo was a 2.4 d5 v70 ph2, I got slated for being 24 with a grandad car and I loved it that much I had to get another one and now my 2nd 2.4 d5 v70 is currently on 225k 😁
The 06 you were driving is Euro4 V70 D5 is a p2 face-lift and develops 185bhp and 400Nm of Torque. The manual accelerates to 60mph in 7.6sec. The Euro4 2.4D is 163bhp and the older Euro3 D5 (pre-05) is also 163bhp, but they are not identical engines. My '55 Euro4 V70 D5 has covered 247,000 miles.
Also he is talking about, that the Diesel in the P2 would be the same as in the first Gen V70, could be right... the 2.5 TDI, bought from Audi was also short available in P2, but later on he is talking about the *same 2.4 diesel as my dad had" ... the dad couldnt have a 2.4 Diesel in the first gen.

I also prefer the P2, especially the pre-2005 ones, when they still had glass headlights. The earliest P2s (pre 2002-3, maybe?) even had leather on the sides of the seat bolsters. As time went on, the cars definitely started to show Ford's mettling (and by mettling, I mean corner-cutting and declining material/ build quality). Geely's ownership has certainly been a Godsend; had Ford kept Volvo in its clutches it would have most likely finished killing it just like GM killed Saab.
I bought a 2008. S60 from the previous owner in Germany. He bought a new S60 in 2019. He said that the old one is better. He was disappointed with the new 4cl. Chinese volvos. After 5 years he still runs strong without a single issue. Amazing quality, equipment, comfort...

My mum is just about to get a 3rd generation V70, and I'm getting the old one (2001) who's done 260.000 miles (petrol engine). It's still running just fine! Great cars.

I've had plenty of these cars, One of which had run for over 500k miles. Great engines than pretty much can outlast you if you maintain it correctly :)

Most cars easily do 207,000 miles. I've yet to hold onto a vehicle to get any higher.
My current one is 214k miles. I sold one recently running strong at 267k miles. Mine have the 5 cylinder Gas (not diesel)
fraid I have to agree with Multi Pass , this video lacked technical content but I learnt more in the comments, such as the Ford takeover in early 2000s which explains why I discovered a Ford made Power Steering rack in my 2008 V70 D5 185hp which had to replaced last week on just 89000 miles. Having owned a loverly 2004 2.4 petrol previously, I too preferred that Gen2 model.
I think that the second generation had the best rust protection ever, with a thicker layer of zink than gen 3. There was a test made by some testing institute in Sweden (for a Swedish car magazine) that showed this.
love my awd 04 P2 V70R manual, feels solid but can surprise anny teenage roadracer in the twisty bits when advance mode is engaged and the michelin cup sport 4 tiers gets up to temp

Some incorrect info provided in respect of mpg and power. However, always good to see someone talk positively about these great cars.
I’m 20. My e46 vert is getting too expensive to run. Over £500 a month on fuel! Thinking of getting a v70 d5, I am a mechanic so the boot space will be nice. Really tempted!
185 bhp for the d5 engine. I love mine, just feels so solid, the doors, when you close the door, you feel so safe. I drive many brand new cars for one of my jobs, nothing feels so solid, even the disco sports or the huge ford raptors.
163 without DPF, until 2006 for the D5. After that, 185 bhp.
@@mehrzahl2219 the mondeo had 163hp at the same time was that a coincidence? They did own volvo 1999> also if you mean the gen2 check out a crash with the Renault zoe. The volvo doesn't do well.
@@chrishart8548 you mean a 940 vs a Modus? Totally different chassis, based on the 740 (developed in the 70s). The Mondeo never had a 5 cylinder diesel, mere coincidence they both had 163 hp.

I can't rate Volvo highly enough! Their cars are definitely built to last. I used to work in car sales and sold my friend a V60 and I'm jealous of him haha. Some interesting numbers from the polestar... I love that they've branched off to a brand in their own right.

I had the 850 5 cyl - rock solid. ... a 1st gen T5 - fast and reliable.... 2nd gen 5cyl - comfy load lugger....3rd gen V70 D5 sport - beautiful car(my 1st diesel).....XC60 R-design D5 PoleStar - SUV on steroids and great handling........Now I have the new V60 T5 R-design Pro - thought I would miss the 5Cyl but this 2ltr petrol is a dream to drive and it is going in for the Polestar upgrade. Next will be the V60 Polestar Engineered hybrid ...with a juicy 400bhp.
I wish you spoke more about the differences between them. Any disadvantages / benefits between going to the newer generation, etc.

I've owned many Volvo wagons. Started with a 245, then 740, 940, 01 V70 T5, and now 10 V70 R-design. The latest is by far the best and I bought it with 185k miles on the clock but impeccable maintenance records. Not to mention I also have a 07 S80 V8 AWD which is no slouch. The down side is Volvo factory maintenance costs.
I used to have a 52 reg and now drive a 59 reg. When I sat in first I found the 3rd generation seats least confy then the 2nd. But if you do 1500 miles at 1 go you will really feel the 3rd seats better. I love both of them.

thats crazy, i drove a v70 (2) when taking my certificate, then first owned an escort, then later a v70 2.5 240hk v70(2) ! stil l still got it, i love this car
I love my 2006 V70 so much. My friend has a 2003 D5 V70 with 244k on the clock and it runs as sweet as a nut. The P2 was the last of the non-Ford models.
P2 is the first Ford volvos, Ford took over 1999, both the p2 and p3 plattform are Volvo made, people call them Fords because Ford used the plattform, pretty ironic because people should call ford cars volvos not the other way around. Some enginges like the d2 and other small crap are straight from Ford tho.

My 04 xc70 is about to turn over 200,000 miles. Runs like a charm.
This is the first gen V70 that used a D5, the 850/v70 used a VW unit. This started as a 163bhp which was about the same as 960 2.3 turbo (petrol)
The very first p2 had vw units from memory, very rare.
I have p2 & p3, so different, both brilliant at what they do.
Great video, thank you ! I own V50 2.0d from 2006, love my Volvo. I'm obsessed by the V70, really want to own one, but I like more the facelift after 2013. If you have the chance, please make a review of one of them as well. The D4 engine is interesting one with 181hp and very economical. Love to see that. Cheers !

the D5 you have there is a completely different than the one in 850 (or the first gen V70).
Yeah 850 and v70 have 2.5 TDI Audi engines.
I remember looking at a T reg 1999 V70 TDI in 2005 for £10,000 I bought a 02 plate ford focus estate LX TDDi for £6,000 3 years younger £4k less seemed like better value lasted till 2016 when a friend blew the engine up ( wouldn't tell me the whole story) always expensive cars. Volvo. Even at 10 years old there barely in my price range.
I love v70 Estate car d4 and I love mine, I had many saloon cars for me I never had enough room, so got the v70 and one thing volvo seats are awesome very comfortable, and in cockpit is a really nice comfortable place to be, and volvos ride really nice, not jerky or sharp, it just rides so nice, now I have a car that does everything in 1 vehicle and I will def buy another when the time comes, just a great car. 👍

My 1998 is at 212k miles and still starts right up and rolls down the road. Volvo is the best vehicle ever made!!! Just don't forget to maintain the transmission.

Recently bought a P2 V70 D5 2.4D diesel 163 hp with 300 000 km from 2006 with manual gears. So far so good, reliable, economical, comfortable, practicality with a lot of space inside... my 🐕🦺 definitely loves the trunk ! I hope to keep it running for many years to come. I can just take your words "this car is one of the best estate cars ever made"

Had an S60 2.4 T5 automatic as my first car. I had done a complete overhaul from brake hoses and oil cooler seals and hoses to a Do88 intercooler and SwedeSource air filter and Bilstein B4 shocks and struts. After 163k miles or ~262,320 kilometers and literally 2 inches or 5cm of maintenance records, it still had the guts to run down 400ish bhp pickups that we have here in the US. The last race it did was against a 2017 Toyota Tundra 5.7 i-Force and it was a dead heat through the quarter mile at about 106mph. The owner of the Tundra was livid but I just patted the fender and said, "That'll do, Liam. That'll do." Sadly a week later, a teenager who didn't make a second check for traffic pulled out in front of me and I hit them doing about 30mph. Completely dislodged their engine and transmission, broke the control arm into 3 pieces, and made the wheel come off when the driver's father tried to leave with it, but all that happened to Liam was a curled hood lip, some supposed frame damage, and a cracked throttle body tube, but the intercooler was fine. 😂
Now I'm torn between a 2014-2015 XC70 T6 AWD in black and a 2019 S60 T6 Momentum in red. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but no. I just love a solid car. 😂
You forgot to mention the most important fact. The Gen 2 V70 was the estate version of the S60, while the third generation is the estate version of the S80. They are technically speaking two different segments.
Nice video! Im a Volvo guy myself for sure. The first generation actually had the 2.5Tdi (Volkswagen engine), which was used In the second generation also for a few years. I've had 2.5tdi V70 which had 750 000kms! Currently I have 2007 v70 D5 with 370 000km. Going strong👌

Yes indeed. A lot of people forget that the 850 TD and V70 TDI gen 1 used the 5 pot Audi motor (that also went into the 1st gen VW Touareg TDI).
LOVE my 01 v70 with a manual trans.
I have same model , year and stick shift. My volvo broke dual flywheel at 200000 miles. and I was lucky found on junkyard. a lot to work to remove but cost me about $ 15 bucks. new cost around $ 800. I fixed my self end running nice.
Got v79r had a few years now 144000 on the clock and still rapid.
Wicked cars. I think really I prefer the charms of the 2nd gen. Those 5 cylinder engines are great both petrol and diesel. I ended up with a Saab instead but think I would like to check one of these out. Also, side note, I need to know what teeth whitening you use ! 😁
the volvo diesel 5 cyl is far far more durable and low cost to own re maint/repairs over the long miles, than the gas 5cyl
Good video, but note that not all D5s have the same engine. Euro 3 D5 163 bhp is *far* more efficient than the Euro 4 185bhp. The earlier versions of the latter engine have a defect where the swirl flap arm tends to come off. I believe this was rectified after about 2010. Personally I believe the D5 Euro 3 is a superior engine. Pity the transmission has just crapped out on mine. I think it might be time for a petrol version!
I drive a 58 plate v70 D5 185 ps it's a amazing car has done 136 k it's still going like a tank
2:55 - Just a point to note. 1st generation Volvo V70 had an Audi diesel engine which was a 2.5-litre 5 cylinder with approx 140bhp, badged "V70 TDI"
Early 2nd generation P2 Volvos also got the Audi engine up to 2001, but for 2002 onwards Volvo replaced with their own diesel engine badged "D5".
The D5 was 2.4-litre 5 cylinder engine with Euro 3 compliance and (in road vehicles) made 163bhp and 340nm. Volvo also sold the D5 engine for marine use, badged "Penta D3", and the engine was virtually identical to the D5 engine that you find in your V70, but it was offered in 5 different stages of "software tune" for marine use:
D3 -110 = 110bhp at 3,000rpm
D3 -150 = 150bhp at 3,000rpm
D3 - 170 = 170bhp at 4,000rpm (same as your V70!)
D3 - 200 = 190bhp at 4,000 rpm
D3 - 220 = 220bhp at 4,000 rpm.

When the sad day finally comes when I will trade in my current car I will look no further than the V70 upgrade and if I am in your vicinity I will give you the first opportunity to sell me one

Hi I have a chance of buying a 2007 2nd gen v70 with 130k miles. It seems in good order and has just had the oil and all the filters changed. Does it matter that it's automatic. The price is £1900
Any tips or thoughts. I have until tomorrow to make a decision. I'm buying the car for my hobby of fishing and for the son etc.

Great video and im a huge fan of Volvo V70s (well, the P2 and P3 models) and coming back to this video one more time to help me decide if its finally time to sell my 2005 and the third Gen video. I do have to point out though that the first generation V70s did not come with a Volvo "D5" engine. It was indeed sold with an inline 5 diesel engine of decent displacement at 2.5 litres. But it was a VW/Audi engine that sounded like it was fuelled by spanners and couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding (i speak from experience, i owned one for 4 months). Some unfortunate second gen owners even had this engine in their car as it was available in some of the first second gen V70s off the line until the proper D5 was developed by Volvo with more power and much more driveability and refinement.

I owned identical cars. What a strange coincidence. First one was manual and second one geartronic.The second one did 385.000 kms from new. I sold it due to some expensive repairs and still got a good price. My Volvo dealer changed hands and they weren’t interested in clients like me. I always paid cash and refused the leasing scam.
I had a 2010 XC70 D5 AWD automatic the comfort was second to none.
The best station cars ever made. I own a P3 XC70 D5 AWD, and believe me it's heaven. The " first gen" named V70 Classic, and i stil drive the really first generation of the best station cars: VOLVO 850 T5 '96. In Holland i saw one V70 classic with 999.999km ( counter can go further!!!)
For interior and exterior I rpefer the second generation over the third. Somehow the design is better. These cars "age with beauty". They don't look fancy new but for me they don't look outdated either.
The main focus is to feel comfortable. Turning headlights, blindspot warning system, speed limiter and a beutiful engine sound makes them simply amazing. The interior is of good quality and the engine reliable. Sometimes the electronics fail a little. In my case the ABS pump and the steering angle sensor on my S60 (technically nearly the same car).
As A German I prefer these cars instead of their German counterparts of the time. Volvo is more reliable and has a better rust protection..
Mine is a 14 plate - 64 . So mines a 3rd Gen ? Also I notice the "Auto " is different to the 3rd Gen that your driving .
I currently have a 2002 V70 with 170k miles and a 1994 850 with 210k miles. Before that I had a 1981 244 with > 300k miles. I owned all from new / almost new. I have to say, in my experience, the 850 was / is probably the most durable and reliable.
My neighbor wants $3200 for a 2007 v70 with 170k miles is this a good deal ?
Didn't understand the big Volvo estates until I got made redundant 25 years ago and needed a car for my German Shepherd, I'd had a Scorpio estate as a company car and needed a cheap estate so I bought a 740 as a stopgap and ended up keeping it for 7 years, I now have a 3rd gen V70 as mentioned in the video it's not rocket ship performance or handling but that's not what I bought the car for, I've got my XJR for that.
For load carrying capacity the Vectra C estate should not be overlooked at 530L/1850L. They are reliable too, if you buy the right example.
Nice review. But… they are fantastic cars, well that is a matter of opinion. I have owned and driven 4 V70’s, 3 Gen 1s and 1 Gen 2. So it is not that I hate them. Yet I am very critical and have driven all sorts of cars, from a Ka to A8 quattro. I love the Volvo engines, I have had a petrol 2.5 140 HP that had done over 400.000 miles and was still running fine. The Gen 2 was a 163 HP D5 diesel with over 350.000 miles on the clock, again it ran great. I buy my cars cheap, always close to their retirement age. So I compare apples to apples. I have had Volvo’s with cloth and leather interiors and I believe the quality of the materials is not great. Most older Volvo’s also have nonfunctioning aircons, in my experience Volvo’s do not compare well in that area. Also, especially the Gen 1, Volvo’s do rust. On the estates look at the rear, certainly when a tow bar is fitted. Also do remove the plastic liner in the rear fenders, 9 out 10 times you will find rust. Also check behind the plastic skirts along the sides. All cars tend to accumulate mud there and rust, Volvo’s too. I have never been to impressed with the space in the V70s, certainly not in relation to their size. My current daily driver is a 2003 C5 2.0 HDi break, yes I like to differ. It has also done over 200.000 miles. Engine is fine yet is nothing compared to the D5. But… the interior is in a much better shape, the leather is fine, all stitching is fine. Always a problem on my Volvo’s and not just mine. And the interior is actually more spacious. And yes it has some French issues Volvo’s do not have. My view: if you want an estate with style and status and do not want to drive a German car, go Volvo. Yet if you are looking for a purely practical estate there are better cars on the market.
I got 220k miles before my old girl second gen 2006 dropped a valve. I got the valves done and now is my daughter’s first car of which I bought when she was a baby. I have the third gen and I like her gen 2 better!!

The one you're driving is a FL v70 2nd gen. It's got a 2nd gen volvo made D5 engine with 185hp.
The only thing these engines have in common is being an inline 5
My dad's 2nd gen Volvo V70 is a 2.4 170 break horse power 0 to 60 I think is about 7 seconds it's a nice sound
I'm still pondering if I should get a 2005 V70 D5 AWD as my daily...dunno why after seeing such good reviews on them
If you are in the UK, the annual road tax for an AWD is £90 more than the 2WD

I'm in Detroit and I would never give up my 2004 V70R. It doesn't feel like a rocket ship, it is a rocket ship.
one thing worth mentioning about the 3rd gen vs the 2nd gen is that the 3rd gen is based oon the s80, and is literally a s80 wagon, while the older one is a s60
The 3rd gen is essentially a Mondeo underneath.
Great video, great cars. Had 4 of these over the years, good solid practical proper estate, no sloping boot lid. Just one little comment though, you mentioned the P3 T6, so was hoping for a mention of the P2 V70R, which in my opinion feel more special than the T6 (and quicker in manual form). Cheers

Don't have a D5, but my 1999 2.5 10v petrol V70 has never failed an MOT... 169K on the clock and still runs as smooth as the day I picked it up back in 2007. Had sofa's, fridge / freezers and loads of other things in the boot. Probably get a late P2 when the current car finally has to go to that scrapheap in the sky...
P80s are really well built. My 1999 T5 still runs like a champ, parts are really cheap and rust proofing is great. I'll keep it as long as I can.

Too weak. Try to get a 5 pot D3/D4.
Going to buy my first Volvo V70 on saturday. A 2010 V70 2.4D Summum Polestar optimized. Living in Sweden, nowdays these old Volvos are pretty expensive still even if they ran many miiles. 175 horsepowers original, but with the Polestar optimization it is 195 horsepower. The geartronic have also been dialed in, better response on the gaspedal. I checked the car up and yeah, it say 7 users on that car, but 6 of these are cardealers that owned it. I will be the second true owner of it. Only went 17 600 km. Dunno how many miles that is. But I am glad I did this.
It was the destiny, that V70 went out the market very same day I crashed my Volvo S80 from 2003. For some reason the car started to pull hard to the left and I couldn't countersteer, so I smashed into the middlerail we got on some bigger streets in Sweden. That car was totalled. So I sat down, looked for a V70 diesel, my dad heard what car I looked for and he sended me pics of this Summum Polestar. I took a loan, called the cardealer. Haven't even testdrive it or seen the car in real life. But the ones that bought the car bought it new in 2010 67 and 66 year old. Now 80 and 79 year old. So it is an elderly couple that had the car since the beginning. It was too good to be true. Here, I smash my car the very same day the cardealer puts out a advertisment on this car and the car truly, truly, truly looks like new on the pictures. So I said: "Well, if you don't buy this one your are stupid. It is no overprize on this one because there are many 2.4D and D5 that sitting there with huge milage and that are even MORE expensive than this car."
So yeah, there is a little carstory for you to read. I am excited, but yet, I am nervous. Going to bring that car home on saturday. Not fully paid yet, but I want to close the deal between four eyes and making sure that the car will be ready for an 2 hour 10 minutes drive home. The dealer even putted the advertisment down because I paid some cash in advance. So yeah, not fully mine yet, but it will be on saturday. I am sooo excited. This will be my 7th car I will own since I had my drivinglicense. Took it year 2000. Only bought cheap cars before this one and my Volvo S80 I did major fixing on it, I did services and everything on it. But I had some bad wobbeling in the front when I drove on the road. I suggested this both to carshops and carinspection, but they didn't find anything wrong with it and then the accident happened. So I guess the wobbeling needs to be something to do with it. Shame, I wanted to own that S80 much much longer. 😫
When you start it up and when driving
Just to correct you 1st gen was a vw diesel engine, 2nd gen is volvo d5 engine
my volvo v70 second gen has gone around 290k miles and is running perfectly fine, D5 185 hk 2007
1st gen\p1 v70 1997-2001 ish) had audi 5cyl diesel engine. 2nd gen\p2 v70 (2002 - 2005 ish) had volvo built d5 engine with 163bhp, the 06 plate your driving which is called the p2 facelift (2006 - 2009 ish) had the 185bhp d5 engine. this 185bhp engine is different to the first 163bhp d5. it has different injection system, larger turbo, lower compression, dpf, swirl flaps, edc16 ecu.
I did think that in the video when you preferred the p3. Most perfer the p2 probably because it was built by volvo (under ford ownership), where as the p3 was interfered with by ford and shared a lot of ford parts. Personally dont like the look of the p3's. Ideal model for me would be P2.5 2006/7 V70 D5 AWD (gen 3 haldex), remapped go very well, loads of grip and good mpg for everyday use.

I love my 06 xc 70 . I just can't get the service engine light off no matter who tries. It has tons of mileage too.
Get a VIDA setup. You just need a laptop with VIDA VM, and a dongle in between. It may cost 200 for that set up but you get all the details about the car, the warning messages, how to fix em, etc. Or have a friend that probably had a VIDA set up to read the codes for you.
Hiw can the front go first with all the weight on the front ? ,,,,, issues again .

Afew weeks ago we bought a 2010 Merc E350cdi estate S212 model, but after 10 days the oil pump went and the engine was screwed. Got our money back. But now one of these Volvos looks a decent alternative and perhaps Volvo's attract better types of owners that maintain them properly.

Despite interior improvements of 3rd gen.......it is butt-ugly compared to the 2nd. Rear lighting and front grille especially. I own '06 V70 2.5T with 208hp (US version). 146k and still a looker and strong.....Gr8 vid comparison; if you could do also a 1st gen V70 compared to 850 would be of interest to compare. Also have a '95 850 Turbo Estate 225hp with 158k that is much more fun to run about than the V70. Gr8 vid....popped up as suggestion vid. Will explore your channel some more........In the US, the 1st gen V70 run was 1998-2000, 2001-2007 for 2nd. 2008 startup for 3rd.
