    Pretty sure you have worked it out now, but it looks like this car has the Aisin Warner TF-80 SC gearbox. When working it is fantastic as it locks up its torque converter in all gears making it really economical and far less slushy. But sadly they are supposed to have transmission oil changes every 40k miles and most didn't. The slip you get between changes is called flare and is due to wear in a piston in the valve body, replacing the valve body (you can get recon and it might be possible with the gearbox in the car still) is the way to go. The same box (variants of) was fitted to diesel Vectras, Signums as well as some VWs and Toyotas. On the Vauxhalls it is possible to get the front pan off the box in situ, and from there get the bolts out of the valve body. Replace and then change the oil, there's a process to follow on the Vauxhalls to relearn that involves sitting at specific throttle settings once hot through a wide speed range (essentially like 20% throttle betwren 0 and 80mph) several times. It is likely similar for the Volvos. That flare will also appear on upshifts into top gear i believe (though youll be going quite quickly to find that).

      As you say, the gearbox oil needs changing around 40k miles as the breakdown temperature of the oil is very close to the running temp of the diesel engine models, it tends not to happen in pertol models as often.

    That's an early 185bhp Euro4 D5, The 163bhp Euro3 D5's were so much better in terms of MPG and less to go wrong with them like DPF's and swirl flaps etc! The aisin warner auto gearboxes in these were according to Volvo sealed for life, They are not! EDIT, Aisin warner auto boxes suffer with a worn out valve block, No amount of fluid changes will extend their life, I did my research on V70 D5's hence ending up with a 163bhp Euro3 manual, 242K miles on it, 53 mpg on a run and 42 mpg around town and it is bombproof! 👍

    Try saving it if, as long as it isn’t too costly as they do make decent money.
    Having said that, I have a 146,000 mile 2014 D5 XC70, I’ve owned it for about 18 months and it’s cost me over £3,000 in repairs and servicing and it still isn’t finished.

      Waste of time and money mate, The Aisin warner gearboxes are crap, The valve block simply wears out, Oil flushes just cover up the inevitable for a few hundred miles, Manuals are the top option on these.

    these gearboxes can sometimes be saved by changing the fluid - google 'gibbons method' for how to do it all in one go or you can do a 'sump dump' a few times over a period of weeks for a more gentle approach. They can be filled via the dipstick and there's a drainplug under the car

  • @michaelarchangel1163
    @michaelarchangel1163 Год назад +2

    A pal had a manual saloon version. Epic engine but if you do decide to keep it, I recommend alternately filling up the tank with the pricey diesel, or at very least giving the car a damn good thrashing once a fortnight, to prevent it going into limp mode. Alternatively, you could get it decatted and the lambda sensor dumped into a bin, assuming it'd still pass the MOT. My old Peugeot TD does so easily, albeit it might not be as stringent on the emissions pass rate requirement. I just filled my jalopy yesterday, this time with the cheaper stuff but add 5ml per litre with mineral two stoke oil, which helps to burn off the crap and also lubes the fuel pump as well - a bit of an issue since the withdrawal of sulphur in diesel.
    Good luck with it, whatever.

    I might be way off here, but I had an old Mercedes years ago, it had an automatic transmission issue, I serviced it, dropping the sump and replacing the gearbox filter and fresh ATF, and it was cured! Worth a try and relatively cheap to do too.

  • @sammytheseal2307
    @sammytheseal2307 Год назад +2

    Thats most likely a valve body issue. 2nd to 3rd upshift is an extremely common point of failure on any automatic transmission.
    The valve body can often be replaced in situ but its still an expensive repair
    That "slamming" is extremely unhealthy and detrimental to the drivetrain. You wont be able to do that much before something breaks!

    Assuming this is the later 185bhp engine it will be the TF80sc 6 speed gearbox. Unfortunately the very first generation of this box had allot of issues with valve bodies. In this case the shift solenoid for 2-3rd is sticking which is the route cause of your shift flare & banging. Driven any significant distance that will eventually lead to some pretty serious internal box damage. I personally wouldn't recommend fitting a used box in this instance as the labour involved dropping the subframe to fit it is pretty involved and chances are unless it's had regular fluid changes (instead of this sealed for life nonsense) you could find yourself back in the same position. Getting at the valve body involves dropping the front of tht subframe for access. They can be swapped as complete assemblies or you can swap the individual shift solenoids. The last thing to mention is that these boxes have adaptive software. Volvo dealer software (VIDA) will allow you to reset the adaptations on the box - effectively it 're-learns' how to shift. It's not uncommon for them to take a bit of time to settle down post component change (anywhere upto 700 miles if a reset & adaption process is not performed). A quick dump from the transmission is also not sufficient, ideally you need to run at least 20 litres of fresh fluid using the gibbon's method (via the transmission cooler). I'm not sure where you are based but if you need to speak to a Volvo specialist with experience with gearboxes I'd recommend Horton Cars in Alesbury. They sorted out my XC60's knackered torque converter for me last year. Good luck!

    Yes, GIBBONS flush should sort it BUT you need Volvo diagnostics (VIDA) to tell the ECU it’s new fluid, otherwise it won’t make a damm difference. If it doesn’t work, box needs new Valve body / block. The pulse sensation from wheel on corners was totally fixed when he found the power steering fluid to be low, instead of topping it up, he flushed it out totally TWICE to make sure all old fluid gone and problem fixed, not returned ok 30,000 mls. Last point NEVER top the D5 engine oil to the max …. Use 3/4 on the max to min scale or limp home mode will pop up. There’s a TSB about it…. Looks like a LUX model, with AWD it’s a rare one…… KEEP it for yourself mate.

    I own a 2.0T V70 that’s approaching 20 and it’s going incredibly well. The thing with these cars is this, if you buy a used one that hasn’t been serviced and maintained regularly, expect it to eat the piggy bank! While these cars are beautifully comfortable and a joy to drive as a cruiser, if they give trouble you’re in trouble! I’d avoid automatic transmissions and Geartronic models. These cars were finished in 2007 so that’s 16 years ago as it is. They’re pretty rare now in Ireland with very few for sale per month and none of them have valid NCT (MOT to our UK friends), and that alone can can be expensive to accomplish. The deck is stacked against these wonderful gas guzzlers but when I’m out on the open road nothing else satisfies as much and I’ve driven nearly every car there is as I used to work in the motor trade. Make no mistake, these Ford era vehicles are not as good as the older generations of Volvo cars.
