Love how the channel is evolving.. it was simple reviews, now road trips, raffle tickets, used cars before and after maintenance and costs.... amazing content mate! And good idea with the Properties channel, although a slower one, but I'm sure you will get there
I went to the Alps on my pushbike last year. I covered 110 km per day on average and had around 4 bananas per day. I guess that puts my fuel economy at around 17 mpb (miles per banana).
Joking aside, I am looking at buying a 233,000 miles 2011 1.6 DRIVe V70 and heading over the Alps this May. I'm expecting no less than 60 mpg, being a hypermiler by conviction.
The respect I give you for saving this old volvo and spending way more on it then it was worth. That's why I love this channel, I love seeing old cars saved from the crusher.
I have the same basic philosophy regarding carbon footprint by keeping my low mileage 05 S type Jag on the road with regular maintenance. I love my Jag but I'm slightly envious of that Volvo; the seats look as comfy as mine and 45+ mpg isn't to be sneezed at.🎉
We did the same with a 370k mile V70 last year. It wasn't worth fixing but once we'd done it, it was so worth doing. There is a video of it on my channel if you like old Volvos but not nearly to the standard of Matt's videos.
Great video. I live in Australia and am envious of Europeans being able to do a road trips like this and see so many countries. Matt, keep this type of content coming 👍😀
Great journey, I did something very similar last year with taking my manual 2005 V70 T5 from Finland to Le locle, Switzerland in one sitting in both ways for my watchmaking studies. Took 23 hours per trip for the 2300km, and the leather seats were incredibly comfy for the whole trip. And yeah, fuel mileage was around 9l/100km. But I checked that the claimed 250km/h is true, and while coming back to Finland I brought home a 400 kg milling machine without a hick. Truly the best car I have had. Not cheap to maintain but they will always get you home, and they are totally worth it!
This is like a budget Harry's Garage adventure; super relatable which is great to see. I'm not knocking Harry's road trips with that, his videos are all amazing too.
What a cracking video, was looking forward to this one and you didn't disappoint Matt. Could've been double the length for me, it was great. What a spot on car too. Testament to you and its previous owner(s)
The beast is still alive... I've recently bought a V70 from 2006 with 300 000 Km ( 190 000 mi) - being the 3rd owner- It is the Diesel D5 engine, looks like it will never die. Not a single dot of rust that I can see, no oil leak on the engine whatsoever, runs like a charm.
@@simoping I know you’re joking but L322’s are honestly pretty decent cars if you look after them. Issue is people who tended to buy them couldn’t give a monkey’s about that. Sebastian and Bartholomew type.
OMG! I was just searching for a video of a high mileage Volvo being driven to the highest town in Europe and couldn't believe my luck when your video appeared. It really is driving to a High Peak in an Auto!!
Loved it.. No nonsense, no Part 1, Part 2, Part 50 video with what I had for food and where I have been and where I am going to be tomorrow. 2000+ mile journey covered in 16 mins. It is staggering to see what that well maintained V70 managed to do. Keep up the great videos Matt!
bought an 03 plate xc90 with 200k miles on it last year. drove it from from london all the way to kosovo in south eastern europe. Roughly 1600 miles. no issues whatsoever volvo 🔛🔝
The WEF (World Economic Form) jet in from their tax havens on their private jet planes taking individual limousine's to finally make it to Davos whilst consuming enough fossil fuel to power a third world country for a year.🙃 All this just to tell the rest of us we are burning too much fossil fuel !!! Save the Planet by leaving the "Rare earths" in the ground and just keep maintaining/driving existing cars.
I LOVE these roadtrip vlogs, when/if you're feeling more comfortable i'd love to see all your sidequests along the way - aka meals, drinks, tourist stuff and so on!
4:40 it’s interesting that a 20 year old car hasn’t lost its fuel efficiency but the electric cars we’ve got today won’t last nearly as long or remain anywhere near as efficient because of battery degradation
Much greener to keep an old car going, as long as its reliable, than buy a new car every 3 years. Nothing green about EV's except the owners of them. With an old car you wont cry if it gets dinged in car park
@@davidperry3531 Wrong. The battery (should it need it) can be refurbished for a tiny fraction of the cost of fully replacing it. Why do you assume the battery will automatically be knackered immediately once the warranty expires? Do you change your engine straight away once the warranty on that runs out? The battery pack probably won't need looking at until it's 10 to 12 years old. Battery degradation typically runs at 2 to 3% per year. Try watching the RUclips video posted by the UK owner of a 10 year old Nissan Leaf, who took his car to a well known UK based independent EV specialist for a battery pack refurbishment. The work took 4 hours, and the cost was £500. Also, you are probably totally unaware of the test that can be carried out by some EV only dealers (yes, they do exist) who have the specialised diagnostic equipment to test the SOH (state of health) of the battery pack prior to any potential purchase. It is not unusual to see 5+ year old EV's with a battery SOH of 90% plus.
@@Brian-om2hh Many EV owners will be quitting their car when the factory warranty for the battery has expired around 8 years and the current life of EV battery is approximately 10 years. The cost of a new battery for a Lexus UC, at today’s costs, is $45,000 so many owners are going to tell themselves it is uneconomical to keep their EV and compared to ICs, if well maintained can easily exceed 300,000 kms without major engine work. My 2000 BMW 323i , now with its second owner, has exceeded 335,000 kms and still going strong.
I had a similar 2004 XC70, but US version with 2.5T petrol, automatic and AWD, which we bought new, and kept through early 2020 and 225K miles. It was the best highway car I have driven and great in northeast US snowy conditions. When I sold it, at 16 years old, the paint was perfect, the interior fresh and without visible wear and it drove great. Regular service and replacement of wear items averaged out to be slightly more than a monthly payment for a new car so I sold it. Great car and one of my favorites.
I wanted to give it 10 thumbs up but I can't. What an epic trip! Right places and done in the right machine. The XC70 is super awesome in every way on highways. It's absolutely a Gem of a car
Hi Matt what a car ! Great road trip vid and loved your sideways stab at climate issues 😉 was looking forward to it all day and no disappointment 👌 nice one !
@@vincehenry9126he’s wrong about old cars being better for the environment of course, a new EV will have paid its carbon cost of production off within a couple of average years. From then on it’s better each mile.
Great vid! I jacked in my company car and picked up a 2005 D5 V70 as a winter beater. Several years later, it's still running like clockwork. I service it every 6k miles religiously, and any maintenance gets done straight away. For a now 18 year old car you just can't fault it, and has now got somewhat of an "it's so uncool it's cool" rep. It's literally never let me down and fully intend to run it into the ground. Great vid, keep them coming!
Loved this and loving that Volvo, I too drive an ageing estate (2010 A6 Avant diesel which doesn't smell) and you're right about the environmental merits of maintaining an older car than opting to move to an EV!
Great video Matt That XC70 looks so good Definitely was worth investing the $$$ in it, rather then scraping the car. The styling is brilliant, and IMO, it does not look like an 18 year old car. The boxier / less rounded shape / styling, makes it genuinely roomy inside - for passengers and huge cargo space ( unlike the current model V60 CC ) and it stands out, in a good way, as it has character and presence, unlike most new cars nowadays, which often look very vanilla / boring. For a car of that size & weight, and it’s ability to accomodate 5 people and a lot of luggage, the economy is brilliant. I knew the Garage who had been servicing it, would have heaps more servicing history on it. With continued proper maintenance etc, that diesel motor will keep chugging along forever. 👍
What a great vid and exemplary example of a well maintained vehicle. I really like your theory about keeping an old car on the road as opposed to buying new for the environment sake. I think I’ll follow that logic for a bit. Safe travels! Cheers 😎👍🏼
My father had a D5 163bhp 2004 regular berlina, and that he had to sell it at +230K Kms. He regularly services the car. It worked as if it was new. Yes it stinks when started, and yes it's noisy. But once warmed is smooth and pulls away. He still says is the best far he have had. It was very comfortable to be a passenger at. My mate's dad had a V70 like yours, not 4x4 probably. We went Barcelona to the Alps packed to the roof. There was space only for 3 instead of 5 adults. At legal and not that legal speeds of 150-170kms/h when possible. The car never shown any weakness. Perfect car. Those might be old, but are greeeat tools. Indestructibles!
Now, this one was exceptionally good, Matt. Loved the pace, the car, and your comments. Especially on climate issues. Very well done, mate. Greetings from Hungary.
A great road trip Matt! Volvo D5 Euro3's are epic engines mate, I've got a 2003 V70 D5 manual on 242K miles and the worst MPG i get around town is 45mpg, It will do 53mpg on a motorway run at 70+ MPH! I understand your timing belt worry's as it is crucial but the other problem on these is the auxiliary drive belt shredding due to old age and being picked up by the timing belt causing engine mayhem! I did a full front auxiliary drive kit replacement on mine as after 236K when i got it the tensioner and idler bearings were worn out, I suggest you check yours 👌
I love Volvos they were made to keep going forever. They are cracking cars. I also love your videos Matt they are just getting better and better by the day. Keep up the good work pal 👍🏻
Loving the content as always mate, never stop these because I absolutely love them. I hope you had a nice trip overall and hope to seeing the next one!
Love it.👍🏻 I’m totally a fan of keeping old motors on the road when we can and find these sort of videos weirdly satisfying. Keep up the good work Matt love how this channel has evolved since I started watching when there was only a couple of thousand subscribers. 😊
I love this sort of content, especially in a "cheap barge". You are so right when you say that a decently maintained old car will just keep going on and on, I've had an 09 Saab 9-3 TTid for a few years that I'm going to have to spend a bit of money on to get back to tip top condition, but happy to do so. It means I know the car, it does almost everything I want it to do and I'd have to spend way more money buying something else that'll do as much, with no guarantee that whatever I buy isn't going to throw up problems 6 months after I get it. As you say way better for the environment as well in the long term, most people have no idea how much building a new car, (especially an EV with all the rare difficult to get metals for the battery), costs carbon footprint wise.
These road trips in some of your older cars are becoming quite a feature of your channel.Really enjoy them - keep em coming! The Volvo was brilliant and in many ways makes you wonder why we spend thousands and thousands on newer cars when something like this will do the same job just as well at a fraction of the cost even accounting for the money you spent on it!
Magnificent video Matt. Adore the Volvo and regret selling my V70 to gain around 5 round-town mpgs from a fkn Zafira, which I hate, but cant afford to drop until I get a new job, as the wages from a 50 odd-hour week and night shifts at this job just about pays the house bills. I have absolutely no worries with driving a well maintained V70 of this era. Also, love the Eco message at the end of the video and again find myself agreeing with every word you say about embedded energy from raw material extraction to manufacture through to recycling....its far more efficient over the long term to drive a well maintained car like this Volvo than it is to run an EV with an unknown, yet to be proven lifecycle. I'm searching out a V70 D5 or XC D5 like this as we speak, as its likely I'll be in a much better paid job in a month or so. I can then run up and down to our farm in West France more often (Near Nantes....Nonce as you say) and start bringing back some of the fleet we acquired whilst living over there, including our fabulous Landcruiser Colorado..... This video has given me the motivation to get over there now.. Thanks and please keep up the road trips Matt.
That was very enjoyable Matt 👍 Totally agree with you regarding keeping old cars running. One of our cars is my 02 Smart Passion and was modded back in 2004 in conjunction with Janspeed and always serviced regularly by an independent smart specialist. She’s still going strong 👍
I bought an 04 V70 D5 nearly five years ago as a shed, quickly realised it was much better than that and it's now coming up to 250,000 miles. I love the comfort and stability of it and would jump in it now to do the same trip (although I live near Folkestone!)
Those old Swedish tanks are really built to last. My dad owned 2 V70s in a row back in the day, and never had any serious issues. I like these road trip videos, it's interesting to see how far these cheap cars can get you. It would be nice to see the way back too! Constructive criticism: The sound quality on the video changes wildly, and sometimes it's impossible to hear what you're saying.
It's just engine mounts really but once changed they last 100k. I love my d5 s60 just always there always dependable always comfortable, I was disappointed in the new Volvo doors are lightweight. It doesn't seem as robust and not as comfortable either
Hi Matt. Great video as always. Proved that regular car service and maintenance the Volvo can easily go on for another 200,000 miles. Absolutely no need to be scrapped. Cheers
Great video Matt. It is a sad indictment on the motor industry that in the 19 years since that big heavy Volvo was made many brand new, smaller, lighter cars are being produced daily that still don't have a range as good.
A good conclusion to the video. I saw a stranded Tesla on the M4 hard shoulder yesterday and miles from the nearest filling station. Old certainly proves the point. Keeping my 2005 Disco 3 going and just a few miles short of 200K with lots of new parts underneath and annual service regardless of mileage it has also been a faithful work horse for 12 years.
All the reasons you mentioned here, are the reason we still drive our 280k mile XC70. But ours is petrol. On motorway, we will average around 550 miles to a tank. If you look after it, it will easily cross 500K. The built quality is superb. The leather seats don't even look worn out. The trim and the plastics are all thick, and the clips are not dry rotten, so there is very little rattle from the panels. We spend on average 1k a year on the maintenance for it, granted I do a lot of regular services myself. We were looking for a second car, as wife now has to travel 60 miles a day for work, and sometimes with kids, so we bought another xc70 (same as the one we have) with 120k miles on the clock, full service history and 1 owner from new. LOL Lastly the OEM Volvo parts are crazy expensive... fuel pump went out - OEM 150 quid - BOSCH - 75 quid. Its the same pump... Same story for shocks, OEM 140 quid a wheel, SACHS 48 quid a wheel. You mentioned the from support arms were replaced, they are like 190 quid. But you can just replace the bushings, for like 40 quid a side. So there are ways to keep the costs lower.
Great comment! Yep, best to maintain these gems and will run as intended for ever! Excellent engineering and good from all perspectives Inc climate issues atm... where do you source oem parts BTW? Euro Car Parts?
I've had several Volvos... Just picked up 2017 XC60.... fsh, year warranty, new timing belt / water pump, Auxiliary belt, towbar, sp tyre and mats, service etc...spent a couple grand sorting it out! Love the D4 Engine. 47,000 documented from new! Should be a great car for a very long time!!!
I have a Volvo s80 here in Thailand. Its 20 years old and 182k on the clock. Petrol cheaper here than UK and so its affordable to drive. A fantastic car for long drives. Very comfortable ride!
Loved it - thanks Matt. Our experience of our 2006 XC90 D5 was that the engine and bodywork are bullet proof, but the running gear isn’t (I don’t think the extra weight of the SUV on the shared Volvo components helps much). Your road trip brought back so many memories from our own Summer and Winter pan-euro journeys. You forgot to mention how, at the Swiss border, you’re given a warm, friendly welcome by a Swiss national, usually dressed in either lederhosen or a traditional Swiss dress, and then charged 50Chf approx (can’t quite remember the going rate), for their motorway vignette. Welcome to Switzerland, give us your money! Having said that and since you chose to head over / through the Alps to Como…….. did you not notice that the standard of road design and maintenance drops off a cliff as soon as you cross the border into Italy? Swiss roads are wonderful, Italian roads (and driving standards are……?). Just as well you have that raised ride height then! Seriously though Matt, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your videos with your genuine love of cars and spirit of real world ethos. Please keep them coming. They’re so good that we don’t mind the sponsorship plugs as it seems like a fair swap! Best wishes, David.
Excellent. Have a 2012 XC60 with 127k on the clock. Bought 2015 with 12k. Was told it had a chain not a belt so ignored the 100k warning. Aircon started to go and felt 'lumpy'. Took it to a local garage and they said it needs a belt change. My bad for not checking. Now runs like a dream. Hoping it will see me to over 300k too. Thanks for the channel
-12C Matt... It was -21C here this morning but.... You'll be thrilled to hear that our RR Evoque 150D, started without a cough 😷! Enjoy your journey home again! I've lost count of how many trips it's made now, between Minsk and Wales in the last 5 years!
Great road trip and video. 100% correct on the keeping older cars running is far better for the environment than building EVs. I bought an EV whilst already owning a 4.4 AJV8 L322 and a XC70. Kept the XC70 and Rangie, sold the EV.
Stunning scenery in Switzerland! Makes me want to visit it even more! Great video as always! 👌🏼 and what a cracking car! Always had a soft spot for Volvo’s. 😊
My 2005 S60 had audio system issues too. Made by Mitsubishi apparently and the internals were about as robust as warm chocolate by all accounts. The CD player was fine but it liked to select whatever radio station it wanted, totally at random. I replaced the whole huge head unit with a matching one from ebay for £50 and it was spot on
My 2006 V70 had some issues with the head unit as well (seems to be quite common as you said). In the end I could repair the original unit but I considered replacing. From what I've heard you need to be very careful to get one from the same model year in order for all the canbus functions to work. But I don't think that's necessary in Matt's case because swapping just the CD player is very easy in my own experience and there are many tutorials on RUclips.
My 2004 s60 with hu803 also has some weird issues, sometimes it goes haywire and changing cd's from 1-4 randomly or if youre listening to radio it starts changing channels.
Great video, and what an adventure with the old Volvo. Totally agree on keeping an old car on the road is far far better than some EV pretending to be cleaner. Keep up the great videos.
Oh, disappointed you didn’t drive it to Sweden as you had previously considered 😄. Would’ve loved to have you here. Maybe sometime in the future you have a crack at a road trip to Sweden. Would love to welcome you here. 👌🏻
This is just like watching a Harry Metcalf road trip video. Today, Matt drives a 300,000 mile Volvo estate to Davos. And Harry drives a 30,000 mile1978 Lamborghini to Davos. I love Harry's videos but thanks for keeping our feet on the ground Matt. There's even a rather tenuous Cheshire connection.
Loved this... the essence of motoring. The freedom you get from owning a car, at its purest. This car takes you across the continent in comfort, regardless of the elements. And, I actually really like that car. I'm a sucker for estate cars and this ticks so many boxes.
I love the fact that you are a true petrolhead Matt, you are trading cars because you love them and it really shows. Saving the Volvo may not have made much commercial sense-but it really made absolute sense.
Nice trip, I love a bit of driving across Europe. My last trip was down to Nice in the south of France in a 13 year old Honda Civic. Never missed a beat and averaged 41mpg at 90mph. 😁😁
I sat in New Zealand watching a Brit drive a Swedish car through France to Switzerland. I feel so international now. Seriously though, a solid point about the environmental benefit of simply not being fashionable. I love the solid offering that the Volvo is. A man could be excused for having a family just to complete the set. Great video. Mo please
Great video and roadtrip. Europe is awesome for a good roadtrip especially in a 'modern classic'. You are spot on that older cars will keep going when properly looked after and maintained. It's sad that we are a 'throw away' country. Newer cars, especially EVs are very expensive and will not last half as long. Look at other countries, Poland for example... A car is a life purchase and you take care of it, cars we haven't seen for decades that we consider classics are family cars and daily drivers... Good example to follow.
Such a good XC70, relliable and good on fuel and comfortable, love the little trees new car smell, does solve the smells for a week or two. Great video as usual Matt :D
I just got back an hour ago driving from Nyon, Lake Geneva to Birmingham in my 2019 Volvo V90 Cross Country. Just did 46.3 MPG on the last 500 miles. Superb car, ideal for 2,500 mile winter jaunt. Impressed the V70 CC managed 49mpg....
That’s an amazing trip, but what has shocked me most is the price of your diesel at £1.89! It’s around £1.50/litre here in Northern Ireland 😂 Very well done, Switzerland is an amazing place. Absolutely beautiful. Very cool car, too. Great video 😊
I had to go over to Northern Ireland to visit family a couple of weeks ago, I found super diesel for £1.69. My local is £1.89 for the same (Warwickshire, non-motorway). Noticeable difference when doing decent mileage over a few days!
@@chrisdowns1987 Yeah exactly. Over here, even if you have a long commute, you still cant drive that far. The country isn’t that big and only has a handful of motorways. I have a feeling our diesel comes from the North Sea (not sure where mainland gets theirs) but I’m told that’s why our prices differ. The cheapest Ive seen is £1.49 last night at a reputable garage. Occasionally, one of the larger retailers does a sale promotion on their fuel and it can be up to 20p cheaper than everywhere else
Hi I’ve done the trip to Switzerland via Nancy. We went via Luxembourg where you can get cheaper diesel. It’s €1.53. And the road tolls are much cheaper. The Michelin App is great for long trip calculations as it gives the toll prices. I’ve seen UK drivers in complete shock at French toll costs, best to know before you go. I love a long trip just as long as it’s trouble free!
Hi, although I'm not from the UK I really enjoy watching your channel. I too, drive a 17 year old Volvo I've had for the last 14 years now,and it's my daily driver, has 270,000 km on the clock, and it's still running strong! As an advice regarding the stinky smell in your car, if it's that bad, then only an ozone generator will get rid of it, don't waste your money on air fresheners. Decent car detailers should have them, or you can buy one for cheap, around £ 70 to 100 depending on the ozone output rating, but just to "disinfect" a car interior you don't need a powerful expensive unit.
I'm with you on the keep old cars going mantra Matt. I have a Berlingo. It's 20 years old but I have it serviced regularly. I paid out to have a cam belt at 80000 but it's done 120000 now. It hasn't let me down. My hobby is taking old people to hospital for their appointments. I'm a volunteer for the local community transport charity and it's just ideal for that.
This fills me with confidence. As you may remember Matt, I own a V50, with the D5 engine. I've owned it since July 2019, and still love it. I'm currently on about 110k miles, and the same battery too, seriously, I can barely believe it myself, a five year old battery that is still starting the car in sub zero temperatures. And honestly, this gem has NEVER missed a beat while I've owned it. I have given it a new cam belt, poly bushings all round, new front ball joints, CV boots, and general stuff like tyres etc. And thoroughly stripped and cleaned the EGR valve, which was caked with about 10-15 mm of carbon deposits. I think that must have been the first time it had been cleaned. But that is all, so it has been pretty cheap to keep it going. I usually change the oil every 6000 miles or so, but I have a mate who works in a garage, so it costs me next to nothing really. And I run a bottle of Redex through it every other tank full, and the occasional bottle of Turbo cleaner, just to keep the oil lines clear. So as long as I treat Ragnar with respect, I should have many more miles of trouble free motoring ahead. That is unless I upgrade to an XC60 or XC70 myself. I fancy an AWD motor, just in case we do get any snow, or I move to a place which is a bit more rural than where I'm currently living. Then I could approach lumpy farm tracks with confidence. But anyhoo, great to see a good old Volvo barge showing other brands what to aspire to. Well done. 👏😉🇬🇧🇸🇪
This made me miss my 2006 V70. It had 250k miles. It failed an MOT with nearly 2k worth of work needed. I just couldn't justify it, but the garage did the work before I had agreed to it, so I ended up letting them keep it. It was fab when it worked, expensive when it didn't! It took our family across France, Belgium, Holland and everywhere in between without issue (with trailer AND roofbox AND 4 bikes. It definately had its work cut out. I loved it.
I've had V70's for the last 15 years Im just on my second a year ago and they have never let me down, never. If you want a comfy van (landlord vehicle) their is nothing better. Great video as always.
A good video showing what you can do with a old car if maintenance is done. In the long run you save money by having services done and other jobs that need doing. The Volvo looked in it's element on this trip. This channel gets better and better.
Thank you for saving this car. They have a decent cult following. Bit of a do it all type of vehicle, comfortable, reasonably economic to run, will go off-road and has loads of storage
This is one of those old school Volvos that are really made to last. You did a great thing to invest on it. I also like the idea to try it in the Alps. A very nice video and interesting till the very end. Got my like bro.
Great Vid! These Volvos were made to last! Over engineered and solidly built for most circumstances. Ive had several and just picked up a 2017 XC60 D4 with low miles! With TLC should go forever! And cheap to run! And a very safe and useful motor!
After your review of the xc90, I was surprised and excited of your road trip in a Volvo. To sum your video up... It was boring but reliable like a Volvo! Love it. Volvo for life.
It’s like a box set you have to keep watching, eagerly awaiting the next season or episode. Nice one Matt. Oh, and you’ve not sold out, keeping it guininely ‘real’ Thank you.
I'm typing this is Sölden, near Innsbruck, having driven from south Wales via Cambridge, across to The Black Forest, and dipped into Italy. This was in a 2005 140bhp V70 with 171,000 miles on it. I've replaced shocks, springs, brakes (everything within wheel arches), brake lines, all filters, numerous sensors, soldered failed joints on dash/CCM/ICE, a number of suspension bushes, EXCEPT the blower motor, which wasn't great as it packed up in 36ºC all the way. It was like being in a sauna for a day. Apart from that, and the power steering pump probably needs replacing, it was great. Better trip though was in my Caterham Seven along similar route and distance. Way better in the Tyrol mountains than the Volvo - or even a V70R. Great name, Matt. 😆
I just watched this video and I saw you were struggling with the car's smell. I know it was a year ago now when it happened, but anyway, I still recommend for you a solution for the future. I am a taxi driver in Liverpool and I use a Sovereign Air Freshener day by day. I cannot tell you how many compliment I had, sometimes 3 times a day for my car's smell. They have several fragrances, several packs as well. I recommend the 4 pack, it is around 15 GBP. If I use 2-3 times a day in my car, 1 spray can last for about a month. In time, your car will smell just perfect! The original has Gold and black colours! Congratulation for this car, this Volvo is a King!
Love this video. I'm in the market for a older XC70 and this is a helpful video on the longevity and quality. I have noticed most older Volvo's seem to have destroyed leather seats, wondering if the leather was too thin? Anyway, great scenery and you are 100% correct on your views on environmentalism. It's far better to keep older cars on the road as long as feasible and practical.
Love how the channel is evolving.. it was simple reviews, now road trips, raffle tickets, used cars before and after maintenance and costs.... amazing content mate! And good idea with the Properties channel, although a slower one, but I'm sure you will get there
Thank you!
Woah.. Missed that! Will subscribe to that channel too 👊🏼
I agree! Great content Matt
Matt is a one-man Top Gear :)
@@OwenLloyd absolutely, I'm waiting for the time when he says: I've been offered to have my own show on this or that chanel. I can see it happening! 😁
An old 300k mile oil burner drove all the way to Davos.... showing the elite how to do the journey in most eco friendly way. Awesome 👌
I'm amazed how much more efficient the diesel is compared to the petrol. These older diesels are amazing, too bad they had to kill them.
I have one myself and they are incredibly efficient. Mine consumes pretty much no oil either.
@@viktorvolaric-horvat5190I hope you’re aware that those engines are extremely tired.
I love my Jag but I'm slightly envious of that Volvo; the seats look as comfy as mine and 45+ mpg isn't to be sneezed at.🎉
I also run a 2004 S80 Volvo for the same reason but it does not have galactic mileage yet - 138,000 so many years left in the old girl! 🤣

We did the same with a 370k mile V70 last year. It wasn't worth fixing but once we'd done it, it was so worth doing. There is a video of it on my channel if you like old Volvos but not nearly to the standard of Matt's videos.
Totally agree. The kindest car for the environment is the one you’ve already got, and kept maintained
True.
You've got to do more of these. Premium video content. Very tidy editing, good sound, good shot selection. Nothing rubbish at all.
Fully agree. I'm trying Newhaven Dieppe crossing in a weeks time, quite a cheap option.
Great video. I live in Australia and am envious of Europeans being able to do a road trips like this and see so many countries. Matt, keep this type of content coming 👍😀

Meanwhile we're envious of your beautiful deserts and wildlife we've never ever seen haha
And here I want to go to Australia and drive a Land Cruiser around the continent and offroad haha

Am envious of people who can do road trips there.
Car stolen last night, so trip now FURTHER delayed.
Check out Harry Dwyer, 1700 miles around UK in a tiny speedboat. The video editing is sublime.
What a cracking video, was looking forward to this one and you didn't disappoint Matt. Could've been double the length for me, it was great. What a spot on car too. Testament to you and its previous owner(s)
I would copy paste this reply but that would be rude of me. 🙂
Totally agree about keeping decent cars on the road. That’s what my plan is for my 2011 L322 Rangie 👍
He said decent cars… lol… jokes
@@simoping I know you’re joking but L322’s are honestly pretty decent cars if you look after them. Issue is people who tended to buy them couldn’t give a monkey’s about that. Sebastian and Bartholomew type.

4:40 it’s interesting that a 20 year old car hasn’t lost its fuel efficiency but the electric cars we’ve got today won’t last nearly as long or remain anywhere near as efficient because of battery degradation
That’s right and who will want to buy an EV after 8 years with the original battery. It will be worth virtually nothing.
Only Matt would leave to go on a road trip to Davos in Winter in RIPPED JEANS……
I wanted to give it 10 thumbs up but I can't. What an epic trip! Right places and done in the right machine. The XC70 is super awesome in every way on highways. It's absolutely a Gem of a car

Hi Matt what a car ! Great road trip vid and loved your sideways stab at climate issues 😉 was looking forward to it all day and no disappointment 👌 nice one !
Actually just watched it again and the stab was full on and bang on! 👍
Great video Matt
That XC70 looks so good
Definitely was worth investing the $$$ in it, rather then scraping the car.

I’m totally a fan of keeping old motors on the road when we can and find these sort of videos weirdly satisfying. Keep up the good work Matt love how this channel has evolved since I started watching when there was only a couple of thousand subscribers. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Makes me want a old v70 even more than I always did .brilliant video Matt .hope to see that you still have this car in 5 years time 👍
Great video and fantastic ad for Volvo. Reminds me of my 2000 E46 BMW 323i now with its second owner and covered over 335,000 kms.
Great vid thanks Matt! I’m doing 1500 miles in the US in my old XC90 in a few weeks. Hope it holds up as well!
Best of luck!
That was very enjoyable Matt 👍
Totally agree with you regarding keeping old cars running.
LOL
Lastly the OEM Volvo parts are crazy expensive... fuel pump went out - OEM 150 quid - BOSCH - 75 quid.

Great video, Matt, as always. You should do more of these, I'm sure a series of 'Great drives in great old cars' would go down a storm.
Nice to see someone appreciating the older things in life. What a car!
Good work. Nice to do little things like that with a decent auto.

Loving these road trip videos Matt, you're a natural in front of camera - great craic. As for the Volvo; point well and truly made. Excellent.

That’s an amazing trip, but what has shocked me most is the price of your diesel at £1.89!
It’s around £1.50/litre here in Northern Ireland 😂
Very well done, Switzerland is an amazing place. Absolutely beautiful. Very cool car, too. Great video 😊
That's what you get for filling at a motorway services. £1.70ish locally although a lot of variation from £1.55 upwards.

Could have put some decent jeans on !!!lol👍👍🤣
Please do more road trips, this was a great watch and the views show I'm not the only one who loved it!
I loved it.
Love the pictures…enjoyed the journey
Your theory about sustainability is spot on, btw.
i dont have my driving license yet but this channel kind of motivates me and gets me excited very nice car channel
It’s like a box set you have to keep watching, eagerly awaiting the next season or episode. Nice one Matt. Oh, and you’ve not sold out, keeping it guininely ‘real’ Thank you.
Thanks!
Probably a previous owner had a dog or dogs
I drive an Audi A4 1.9tdi, it’s a 2000 B5 and she has 280000 miles on her clock, and everything works, and she runs spot on.
I loved our 55 plate V70, 180000 miles just run in ! Anyway 47mpg with 4 people full boot and 2 bikes on the roof, brilliant.
Brilliant - your theory on using older cars being more environmentally friendly is bang on
Love the robust heavy duty stitching on them seats when your wrapping up the video, looks so solid...as I said earlier, loving the content mate.👌
