Jake, I see so many people doing exactly what you mentioned in this video.. and every single person who I've seen trying to water a dormant lawn is not succeeding.. at all! I started right away with watering, and I only do 3×/week 1/2" each time and its working soo well for me! Keep up the great work!
I live in Hawaii and this summer has been brutal. My lawn is thick and I mow it twice a week. However, this is the first time I have noticed an area that is looking dormant or stressed from the hot Hawaii sun.. I hoping it recovers soon. Thanks for the reassurance that my lawn will bounce back. BTW your channel and editing skills has evolved in the past year. Keep up the great work!
My grass is so dry it's crunchy. Many neighbors still have wells and have lush green lawns. My neighbor runs hers twice a day because of drainage and mows every two days. We don't anymore and the soil drains so fast when we have a week without rain it will hurt it. I've been thinking about trying to water but there is no rain in sight and it's hot and humid and it would take a tremendous amount of water for it to return to green. It looks awful.
@@CDPMATH yes, location is important. I think if you can get some rain help once every 4 weeks or so, I would imagine it will be fine until the weather gets nicer.
And I was worried, thanks for the tip on not watering if it’s too far gone. And yes I noticed that it comes back in the fall and the spring like it was never dormant
Even a dormant lawn needs water. Period is a lot longer than most will not get rain but if its truely been 30 days, the lawn needs water to stay alive in dormancy.
This is my first year using Hydretain and it's been a big success. I'm here in Michigan and watered once per week until i recently over seeded. My neighbors are basically watering straw... great content as usual man...
I'm in IN & wish I would have known about Hydretain before the summer drought. I bought a bottle recently and may try putting some on the next time rain is in the forecast for a fall application.
My lawn started going dormant after the hot temps we had in July. When the tropical storm came thur and we got 4.5" of rain it came back to life. I was shocked. I thought some of the areas that were dry was poa annua checking out. But no those areas are back.
If that's the case, those without irrigation should watering every square inch of their entire lawn. I know because I let my back lawn go into dormancy EVERY year and it recovers incredibly in the fall.
Should I be watering my grass in the winter because I have heard from some people say that it goes dormant during this time and there’s no need to water but I’m worried that it will die? My grass is thick when I water it btw
I have grass that when it dries up it dies but when it’s alive it’s such gorgeous grass , idk tho I think I have Marathon 3 grass , cool fescue right ?
Yep... My neighbor, watering with the good ol’ oscillating sprinkler at night. I keep the front green all year. I do not use my irrigation system it is to expensive in the Summer. My neighbor is getting my sides all confused, I like em’ crispy. I have a small front lawn because I am on a rounded cul-de-sac. Easy upkeep, oh well let them waste the water, the days been about 90° ever since the derecho on the 10th. 😆
Jake it's been tough here in the Chicago area no rain and high temps. But I'm hanging in there with my watering at 5 in the morning and keeping up with my next products, only lawn on the block that is green, still mowing high once a week. Dominating !!!!!!
Especially if it’s Bermuda! It’s a tough son of a buck grass! 45 minutes waterings, 3 times a week is what I do. I’ve already started the scalping process.
what are your thoughts on putting down slow release fertilizer during the heat of the summer.. I work for a lawn care company and they just tell customers that its ok we are fertilizing now and with the heat and temps we stop at 87 degrees. We also are telling them to water as you say deep not daily it will help.. Im getting tired of what seems like lying to the customers since I want to help them and ease their minds and trust in us..
We had a pretty bad drought here in Indianapolis in the summer of 2012. I did absolutely nothing to the yard and it came back great in the fall. It was so dry it hurt your bare feet to walk in it. There were lawn fires all over the city from people throwing cigarettes down.
I'm in the process of making my own irrigation system with a 4 port timer off both hose bibs, pvc pipe and some Hunter MP3500 heads. I have to do it on even days here in Illinois, so every other day obviously. I've only got 2 sides of the house done so far, but the difference is remarkable. The side without irrigation looks SO dead. Like past the point of coming back dead. The side with the watering is starting to look a hell of a lot better and it's actually green. We shall see how the really dead side comes out of this brutal summer. Thankfully I'll be aerating and overseeding in a few weeks and should have all of the sprinklers done by then. Fingers crossed.
I know you're just a town or 2 over from me but I don't recall any rain since that big storm we had. My lawn is looking slightly toasty but I have been watering s couple times a week. Neighbor cut down her tree this spring so I am getting a ton more sun
That's gotta be rough. I can't say I've been there but I feel the pain. As I mentioned, if you got on the watering early as recommended you'll be just fine.
Great video Jake, I live in Western Canada and we are experience a summer long drought. My lawn has been dormant for over two months. Just found out we are hosting a big family barbeque on September 9. Five weeks from today. Is it possible to get my lawn green again with the watering program you suggested. Four days of deep watering three days off? Will my lawn be green by September. Should I fertilize. What is your opinion on this.
If you're going to fully commit, go for it and water. the first watering I would water a full inch and a 1/2" the following day. Then start the cycle I recommend.
How can I tell if my grass is dormant or actually dead? It looks dead to me. I want to start raking it to clear out the dead grass so I can overseed but not sure if I will hurt the dormant grass, if I have any. It all looks dead to me. LOL
Well I agree but disagree with you here. I agree that there isn't much point in trying to get the lawn out of dormancy at that point, but I disagree on not watering the lawn. After 4-6 weeks of drought the grass can go from dormant to dead so it's still important to water if you haven't had any in a month. It depends on the type of grass and the extent of the heat. KBG will go dormant faster but it'll last longer in drought, TTTF will stay green longer but once it goes dormant it's quicker to die.
I don't have irrigation or running water faucet to my back yard it's been about 2 months at the beginning of April / May /June since I only watered Mossy areas... Jake do you have any suggestions I have Rye Grass in Northern Pennsylvania Please!!!!
Hey This is such good information that will never get to the right people. People do not understand it will come back. My question I irrigate correctly - I have several large brown spots . These areas get sun in CA all day long. I used the hydratian and it did not seem to make a difference. I also adjusted the spray on the irrigation no change. Do I just let it go until the Fall? Thx
Jake well said ? Though I have a major reseeding projected going to start next week planting midnight kbg with rye mix how deep does the dirt have to be to start full sun location
The one exception is warm season grass. You don't want it to get too burned out. Now you don't have to try and keep it looking like a golf course but at least give it some water.
why ur eyes red, have you been smoking the lush grass? good video tho, i always get a kick out of my neighbors that cut their grass at golf course greens height with clover and dandys all over.

My understanding is that you still have to water once in awhile even if your lawn is dormant.
I feel like that is where rain comes into play.
Jared I suppose unless you life in Southern California lol
@@CDPMATH yes, location is important. I think if you can get some rain help once every 4 weeks or so, I would imagine it will be fine until the weather gets nicer.
My tall fescue went dormant in middle of June in north Texas so I watered it 3 times a week and seem to help it now it’s green going into August.
I agree 👍 depending on your location....
Right... but if the lawn has not had any rain in over a month, doesn't it need to be watered an inch or so every two weeks to keep the crowns alive?
And I was worried, thanks for the tip on not watering if it’s too far gone. And yes I noticed that it comes back in the fall and the spring like it was never dormant

I have Rye Grass and this heat wave has been a killer on my grass... Any suggestions I'm in Pennsylvania????
You have 5-6 weeks that a lawn can survive through a drought before you should water it, or you risk losing at least some of it.
If that's the case, those without irrigation should watering every square inch of their entire lawn. I know because I let my back lawn go into dormancy EVERY year and it recovers incredibly in the fall.

...I hope you mean watering 3 times a week for a TOTAL of 45 minutes of water a week 😉
If you don't have an irrigation system what type of sprinkler would you recommend if the oscillator is not good?

The Texas heat jacked my lawn so badly this year, I may roto till and start over.

Good advice, don't hear many folks saying this.
what if it turned cripsy, then laid over, and pulls up easy. will it still come back? i dethatched, basically have dirt showing.
Then I would go ahead and overseed it. I'll have a ton of content with regards to seeding coming up!
sounds like grubs if it pulls up easy. grub damage looks like drought

I understand that. That's what I said in the video. I'm talking to those who haven't watered in that 2 month time frame.
@@JakeTheLawnKid I somehow missed that point but I do have 5 kids who distract me 😁
Wouldn’t the lawn die if I leave it until the fall? I live in Minnesota by the way.
Not at all. Grass is resilient. Dormancy isn't death.

Watering at night is no different than when it rains at night
Glad I watched this, thanks man
my " marathon " sod is less than a yr old , will it survive if i let it go ?
The first two years of establishment are crucial so if you can water it I would advise you do so.
i let it go for maybe two weeks and paid the price lol , so much die off 😖
Thanks for bringing me on Live with you on Instagram!
drives my crazy seeing people do this, if you want a green lawn you should have been watering it from the start.
That’s right
I have a neighbor who watered her lawn twice a day all of July. The crabgrass is looking real thick ;-)
Grass Daddy we must have the same neighbor:)

Same amount as city water. 3-4 days a week.
