With all the steps it takes to have a nice lawn and mowing most likely being the number one step to do correctly, watering is probably the most abused step for a lack of a better word. It is done so incorrectly by many and you have simplified it by getting a rain gauge. It is not the cure all but it does tell you how much water your lawn is getting when and if it does rain. For nothing else at least when it rains you know the coverage is good :)
Couldn't agree more. People really abuse the watering part for sure. That simple $3 rain gauge takes so much of the error out of it. And you're right, can't beat the coverage of a good rainfall. Thanks so much bro. Always appreciative of your feedback!

So at what time in the evening is the best time to water? My work schedule really don’t work for morning watering. At this time of the year where I live it’s been around 100 degrees at 5pm and I’ve always heard if the sun is still up, you can burn the grass. Is this true?
No, that’s not true. That’s just people trying to sound smart while living in fear haha. If I water in the evening, it’s usually around 5:30 or 6 to give some time for the grass to dry a little before dark. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

I had to do the early night watering all last year and was super worried i was gonna have fungus issues cause i am just not able to water early morning. My lawn survived. It was just happy to get water lol
Do you have any recommendations for a sprinkler that provides even coverage? The oscillators don't do bad if you're doing a large area but I have some smaller areas to water, and the only sprinklers I have for smaller areas give very uneven coverage.
I’m not too picky on sprinklers. I’m only using an oscillating one at the moment no matter the area I’m watering. I like the ease of adjusting the spray pattern. Gives me flexibility regardless of the space. I find that the one I use is really even. Here’s a link to it (not the same brand as mine). I think they’ve rebranded, but it looks just like this. Just got the same exact rain gauge myself a week ago. Tried to download rain meter apps, etc but weren’t sure if they were accurate. No I know how much rain exactly with the rain gauge. I figured I would have to angle it when measuring the sprinkler but a tuna can is probably easier for that. Love the content!
Nice! Yeah, I'm skeptical of the apps too. Unless the reporting station is in my neighborhood, there's no way they're accurate. Can't get more accurate than a rain gauge in my back yard 👊. Appreciate ya watching and dropping a comment.
Thank you very much. With a family, full-time job, and the rest of life, I don't have the time to put in a lot of shooting and editing effort, so I really try to make sure the content part is valuable for you all. Thank you for noticing and mentioning that. Really means a lot. Your support is much appreciated!
I agree with watering in AM growing seed, I’d recommend watering evening. Promoting growth argument doesn’t hold water IMO. I’m pretty sure my grass has been rained on at nighttime. Never had an issue with fungus.
So straight up, what 2 days should I turn my sprinklers on early morning? Monday and Thursday? How much of a dry period is ideal for those roots to grow strong and healthy?
Wish I could answer that for ya. Really it’s about convenience and if it rains or not. Trying to get on a set schedule just frustrates me so I play things by ear. Usually a few days between watering when it’s hot and dry is good enough. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya.
So any advice on how to water a newly seeded lawn (1 month old) when the weather forecast shows 30-50% chance rain mid afternoon and it might not even rain (has been happening where it shows rain and it barely comes down or not at all)... the weather here in NJ has been so strange the past two months. Driving me insane trying to evenly grow grass from seed. I have lots of patches that are starting to fill in that I had to reseed bc I’m sure the original seed died due to super high temps with minimal watering the first two weeks. I tried my best bc my yard is a rectangle but with circular pattern sprinklers water didn’t always get everywhere well.
Yeah, it has been a strange spring everywhere it seems like. Sorry to hear you're having trouble. My best advice would be to water regardless of what the forecast says. Unless it says 80-100% chance. It's so important when seeding to get enough water, so it's worth the risk of doubling up. You may have to reseed the bare areas and water, water, water. A lot of lawn care is doing your best and fixing the rest. No shame in that. Keep on trying until you get it right. It's all a big experiment sometimes. That's what I love about it. Appreciate ya watching and the comment. Good luck.
@@BudgetLawns thanks so much for the reply! I think I would have loved the process more if I had a better system to watering my yard. I didn’t realize how critical proper water would be.
Really great video, thankyou. At what point after seeding would you start the 1inch per week though? I know the seeds require much more frequent watering to become established, but not sure what constitutes 'established'
Appreciate ya. The simple answer is It’s established when it is fully filled in. Thin lawns can take more water because they don’t retain the moisture as well as a thick one. Hope this helps.
On the subject of night watering, it may not apply to everybody but down here in Central Mexico where I live I've been night watering my mom's lawn at night for the past 40 years and never ever had fungal issues, so why do I water at night ? 1.- water pressure, water pressure during daytime is nearly zero so sprinklers won't run. 2.- if there is water pressure then it's too hot to water the lawn during the daytime, I bet half of the water you dropped evaporates 3.- I have plenty of time to do it.
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing that. At the end of the day, it's all about what works best for each person's lawn. Sounds like this is working great for you and really your only choice. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Great job. Keep up the awesome work! Appreciate you!
Now how long does it take a typical underground irrigation system to put out. Half inch of water? Hunter heads, heads all along the perimeter is pretty typical we're I'm at.
Great advice. All preseason plans get thrown out the window when reality hits. Have to go with the punches and sometimes even when ducking and weaving you get hit. Have to make some adjustments and stay on your feet. Its a 12 round fight lol :)
6 bucks at Walmart. www.walmart.com/ip/AcuRite-5-inch-Blue-Capacity-Rain-Gauge/16888924 Inflation like everything else. I used to get em for 3.99. This video is a couple years old. Thanks for watching.
Haha, me too. But right now, I'm tired of the rain. Hasn't stopped since I woke up this morning. Well, really for the last 2 weeks for that matter haha. Pretty sweet shirt. I bought it from Sunny Bermuda. Check out his channel here on RUclips. He's got it on his store. Appreciate ya watching as always. Thank you!
Quick question, where exactly should you put the tuna can in the trajectory path of the sprinkler? The half way mark? As in half way from the head of the sprinkler and the very further point it reaches? Thanks again for the amazing content.
Good question. I played around with the tuna cans every time I watered. Closer to the sprinkler there tends to be less water, while further away you can get more. Every sprinkler is different it seems like, so you just kinda have to experiment with it to get an idea of water output. That's the frustrating thing about watering. It's not exact and we want it to be because we're trying to get that 1 inch. I learned awhile ago to just be happy with somewhere around an inch. Thanks so much for watching and the question. Really appreciate the support!
Had the exact same rain gauge and it cracked so bad that it doesn't even collect water anymore, if and when it rains. Rain gauges are becoming obsolete around in my area because it doesn't rain enough to call it rain.
Bummer. I had one crack too because I didn’t put it in the garage before the first freeze. Wish I could give you some of my rain. Hasn’t stopped for weeks now. Very short breaks between showers or storms. Thanks so much for watching the vid. Appreciate your comment.
I have followed a strict water routine on top of using pre emergant in the spring, soil samples to add or decrease what soil needs and fertilizer in spring and even in summer with liquid fertilizer. My lawn looks like a golf corse or a pro baseball stadium grass. Takes lots of work but so worth it.
Video about that coming out tomorrow. I’m going through it now. Likely it will. If you’re lucky it won’t. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned.

It’s amazing to me how Lawn RUclipsrs haven’t a clue. It is a lot more complicated than that. The first and most important thing is your soil composition. You need to get a good understanding of Saturation, Field Capacity, Wiltering Point and Total Available Water. I’ll give you an example. If you water deep and infrequently in mostly sand soil you will take your turf into the wiltering point for too long so your grass will struggle. Why? Because water in sandy soil leaches a lot faster than other soils. You need to keep the water (soil moisture) within field capacity and wiltering point (total available water/TAW) for as long as your type of soil will hold it in that range in the root zone. And then water again. It’s like keeping your tank full of gas without letting it run out all the way. Also , your grass maturity normally dictates it’s root zone where you want TAW too be. And also, this guy states that frequent small waterings simply evaporates? Then mentions how humans need water for health. So imagine being in the full Sun all day without any water… even if you just drank a two good drinks of water during that day it would help right? I have a cool season grass in my backyard planted in 89% sandy soil. I live in far west Texas where we have plenty of over 100 days during the summer and mostly high 90s the rest. I water 50 minutes Sun, Wed, Fri in the morning and twice a day every day for 10 minutes late morning and early evening dictated by the suns position on my grass. I have seen my grass stand straight up during the 10 minute waterings as if it is thanking me. My point being is not everything is the cookie cutter regurgitation as this guys would like you to believe. If I watered my TTF twice very deep like this guy is suggesting then I would have dormant or dead grass. My sandy soil simply can’t sustain total available water in the root zone for very long with the sunlight, high ambient temps and leaching. One other point to complicate more… Watering too much (deep watering) to the point saturation loses water to leaching faster than at field capacity. Volume and weight of the water have something to do with it. Gravity just pulls it down. Rain water is different. Usually rain comes with a a bit of lightning activity which creates nitrous oxide and naturally fertilizes your grass. Nothing compares to rain water.
@@BudgetLawns Of course, just like you thought of that useless diet acronym. LMAO. PS that's just the academics on watering, I didn't even get into the actual soil science. ha

1" a week is a lot. I would say more like 1/2"/week. It is called capillary action. After the 1st irrigation the next 1/4" will infiltrate another 3"s down. You can apply to much at one time. 1/4" per irrigation is more than enough.
I’m not making that up. It’s turf grass science. If you wanna create your own science, go ahead. I’ll follow what the experts say. I’m just regurgitating what my research has shown me.

@@raulgutierrezconstante8119 That's wild. To think that's as cool as it gets is nuts. We get pretty cold where I'm from. Bingo. Typically things work out just fine. Main thing is get the water when you can! Appreciate you bro!
I have one to much water you are right
@@MizzStylezDiva Thank ya!
This is not an affiliate link. www.amazon.com/Rocky-Mountain-Goods-Oscillating-Sprinkler/dp/B07NDLY2ZV/ref=asc_df_B07NDLY2ZV/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=343238573411&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11387934471961732037&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1013339&hvtargid=pla-713041722388&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=71762478951&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=343238573411&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11387934471961732037&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1013339&hvtargid=pla-713041722388

curious
Miracle Grow makes a lawn food version. I don’t know the difference between it and the plant food tho. Thanks for watching.
Awesome advice and....i learn a lot, thank you.
Awesome. That’s great to hear. Thank you. I appreciate your support.
@@BudgetLawns Exactly. It was time to stop wondering and be sure with the rain gauge. Keep up the great work!!

Great advice, starting my DIET watering routine tomorrow morning!
Right on. Thank you. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
I agree with watering in AM growing seed, I’d recommend watering evening. Promoting growth argument doesn’t hold water IMO. I’m pretty sure my grass has been rained on at nighttime. Never had an issue with fungus.
I agree and have much the same experience. These are just best practices as recommend by turf grass science. Appreciate ya watching and the feedback.
I water my bermuda in the evenings and I've had issues with fungus several times.
We'll see if watering in the mornings will help.

Great tips! I finally used measuring guages (those little yellow ones from Amazon) on all my zones this year and really dialed in my watering.

Can u post a link on those.
You bet. Yeah it can be a challenge but it’s a must. You’ll get there. Appreciate ya.
Thanks for the tips. Great sarcasm😂
😆😆 thank you. Glad it helps and you enjoyed it.
@@BudgetLawns wonderful thanks
Very nice! 👍👍👍
Thank you. Appreciate that!👊
On the subject of night watering, it may not apply to everybody but down here in Central Mexico where I live I've been night watering my mom's lawn at night for the past 40 years and never ever had fungal issues, so why do I water at night ?
1.- water pressure, water pressure during daytime is nearly zero so sprinklers won't run.
2.- if there is water pressure then it's too hot to water the lawn during the daytime, I bet half of the water you dropped evaporates
3.- I have plenty of time to do it.
Haha yeah they do. Love the analogy. Only the most fluid of fighters will survive. Thanks so much buddy. Always appreciate ya.

When are you going to have that shirt raffled 😄
You must be here around OKC.
Close. Northwest Arkansas. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns Thanks for the great videos!

That rain gauge looks familiar my friend. Throw it into the garage in the winter or it will crack.
Haha, you got that right. Won't make that mistake again. Thanks so much buddy!
Nice job. Does take a lot of work for sure. Keep it up. Thanks for watching.
Question) if it rains for 7 days and seven nights the grass is going to get a disease from so much rain 🌧 🤔

If you have ample pressure revolving sprinklers though they have only medium area coverage, water very quickly and very evenly.

I want that Shirt, how can I get one

Wow, you really typed all that. 😂😂
@@BudgetLawns Of course, just like you thought of that useless diet acronym. LMAO.
PS that's just the academics on watering, I didn't even get into the actual soil science. ha

Sandy soils require more frequent waterings then clay.
Soil type must be considered
And i live beside a golf course and the sprinklers don’t even come on till midnight. I have never seen any fungus ever.
Yup. I grew up on a golf course and the sprinklers ran at night too. Just gotta let it drink when ya can. Thanks for watching.

Why a rain gauge? Just Google your area weather report and see how much rain you got
That’s so far from accurate. My national weather service reporting station is on the opposite side of town. There’s nothing more accurate than a $3 rain gauge on your property. It’s silly not to have one.
