    I stumbled across your channel tonight and in just a few minutes you have changed my entire approach to lawn care. I maintain two lawns: 8,000 square feet of St. Augustine and 3,000 square feet of Bermuda. I use all the bio stimulants, special liquid fertilizers, specialty ultra greening potions and both lawns are immaculate but you have convinced me to return to the absolute basics of weed control, simple fertilizing and watering. Why you may ask. You are the only RUclips lawn channel that bothers to respond to every single comment and answer every single question. Great job.

For the first time, I will take the time to try to create a beautiful, well-groomed lawn. My yard is saint Augustine and in need of some weed destruction. Another great video! These 2 things: doing a soil test and the outrageous cost of "organic" fertilizers, have been some of the biggest barriers of me going DIY! @@BudgetLawns No problem. Thanks for putting the information out there in such a straight forward way.
      I've used Scotts turf builder weed and feed in the past and bought Greenview Fairway plus crabgrass this year on the recommendation of my local Agway. I see both have high nitrogen with no phosphorus and little potassium. I always wondered why the formula was so unbalanced, and what you are saying about 10-10-10 makes sense. The plants need each one in the right proportion, and the Scotts and Greenview products seems to be targeted to make the lawn look good quickly, but lack the balance. Generic 10-10-10 is also much cheaper!
      I'll also try the Spectracide granular product this fall and possibly next spring too. I have lots of crabgrass and my lawn is full of other weeds as well. I want it to look a little better without spending a lot. The soil is terrible and it everything dries out in the summer. I know I could water it, but I'm just not interested in that. I'm in south central PA and it is wet enough here in the spring and fall.
      I just want to give the grass a little better chance to out compete the weeds and I'll leave the rest up to nature.

My lawn is about 7500 sq ft and I believe one bottle treats about 5000 sq ft so I feel I went light on the application yet the results look very nice. My plan is to lay off the herbicide for now, and just pound it with Milo, and hope that we get a lot of hot weather and rain (Raleigh NC), in the hope that whatever Bermuda is there will start to take off. @mattfrekwentflier8342 2 года назад +1

      There are 3 times I'll bag clippings:
      1. The first mow of the year. I power rake then mow up all the dead junk and bag it. It doesn't really help the lawn to keep it.
      2. If I have an active fungal infection, I'll bag. No need to spread the infection around the yard.
      3. If I've let it get too tall and mowing it would cause grass clumps all over. This one is rare for me, but it can happen.
      I hope this helps you out.

    Before throwing down that much "P" one should technically do a soil test. While yes P is great for the roots it's also an element that can get over done quickly. As for weed control I too was a spectricide fan up till last season. I switchs over to Q4 Plus (professional stength product, read the label.) and Prodiamine 45 WDG. I find poth of those products are cheaper per app over box store products and I use less of them. My surfactants are either MSO from AG southern or Natural Agument from GCI Turf Academy (this product has a high initial cost due to the other things needed to work, more advanced option). Both of theee products can be applied with a hand can or backpack sprayer. No hose end for those. Oh with crabgrass one needs to know what stage it's in. Most box store products are generally affective upto 2 tillers. Want to keep super simple! Scotts 4 step program. I personally suggest that to my friends family. It takes all the guess work out it. 4 apps a year and your done. The rest is in the watering and mowing practices.

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  2 года назад +7

      These kinda comments crack me up. They miss the entire point. People watching this don't want all that gobbly gook you just threw out. You can tell you're under the spell of GCI, prolly Doc, Ron, and all the other so-called "experts"...more like expert salesmen. The folks here on this channel want to keep it simple. Yes, there's a place for everything you just mentioned, but a lot of people aren't looking for that. That's the whole point and mission of Budget Lawns...average homeowner lawn care. That's all I am and practice.
      And what is up with all you people and soil tests and phosphorous (see my latest follow up video to this one where I go into a bit of a rant on this topic: ruclips.net/video/lQ8Mm9Envy0/видео.html)? I'm fully aware of that. Y'all act like that's the only thing hurting the environment in lawn care. Y'all never mention insecticides, fungicides, or any other supplements y'all haphazardly use that cause as much or more damage (which I use no of). Your comment is just another listen to me, I know better than this guy in the video. Sounds like you need to start a channel to see how difficult it is to give everyone tips. You can't be everything to everyone. Every video cannot be comprehensive. I appreciate your comment and you watching, but I'm tired of this same ole song and dance.

    Nice, I was wondering, how much milo do you put down? Would about 5lbs/1000 work to help with greenup and etc.?
    How many lbs of 10-10-10 do you put down with each app?
    If I try and use less fertilizer than the bag, I seem to get stripes (ugh). How do I fix the striping as well, do I go a little less and walk closer (2-3ft instead of 5) or do less and walk north-south, east-west?

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  2 года назад

      I go just less than 1lb/k of N on the triple 10 and just a dusting of the organic. I don't measure anything. I set the spreader on a comfy setting that allows the fert to slowly come out and make multiple passes across the lawn in different directions ensuring that it's getting an even coat. I look at what the bag says it covers and adjust according to the lawn size. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya!

    I've struggled with my lawn for the past couple of years, this year I think I made the worst mistake I've ever made, I typically have been putting out a pre-emergent every year, well I came to the conclusion some how that it "Wasn't helping" as I would still have to spray for weeds..... I was so wrong, I have battled more weeds than I've ever seen this year, Nuked it with a lawn spray, then I used tenacity, I actually bought tenacity two years ago with the idea to use it as a pre-emergent. Another problem I found is some of those "weeds" in my lawn were not actually weeds, I had my buddy come over that has been doing landscaping and lawn care pretty much his entire life and he looked at what I had and said "Kill it now with roundup" scary words, I had what he said was "rare" invasive grass. Saw grass, and some blue grass, weed killers don't kill them, it's got worse every year because the stuff just spreads every single year when you mow. I hope one day I'll have it all under control. great video.

    • @Monsiemage
      @Monsiemage 2 года назад +1

      "Quack grass" is the proper term for the other invasive grass. My buddy calls it saw grass because if you want it gone you have to nuke it with roundup and plant new grass. Nasty stuff, I might have to make a video over it one day. It spread from this little patch of a shaded part of my lawn about 1/4 of the way into my back yard now.

    Best bang for the buck stuff right there. Use the same post m stuff! Tempted to try your pre m plan this fall and late winter. Poa is a thorn in my side. Does it seem to work on that?

      It worked awesome on the poa in my last lawn. Never had a problem with it once I got on my schedule. Before though, it was a nightmare. Thanks for watching brother. Always appreciate ya!

    Man it is good to see this. Ive been writing blogs posts about my bermuda yard and how you dont need to spend crazy amounts of money, and how easy it is to keep it looking great. I use the same spectracide post emergent and use their pre emergent and love it as well. New thing i did this year was put down some humichar to help with my soil. Cheers man.

    I noticed you use a drop spreader vs a broadcast. I know you’re in Arkansas, I’m in Oklahoma so the wind is insane here. Just wondering if you have the same issue there and that’s why you chose the drop spreader?

      The drop spreader was all I had at the time. I use a broadcast for everything now. But you’re right. The wind has been insane lately. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.

    Great video, with that 10-10-10 you indicate less than 1 pound of nitrogen . Do you apply about 10 pounds per 1000 sq ft. With the natural bio solids about how many pounds per 1000 sq feet do you apply ? I have KBG cool season grass and fertilize 4 times a year. Keep up the good work.

      Thank you. Appreciate that. I don't ever really measure anything. Just based off the bag and lawn size, yes, it'd come to a little less than 10 lbs/1000 for the triple 10 and even less for the biosolid. I just put a light dusting of it down. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and the question.

    Does your system work for St Augustine?

      Good question. You need to check on the herbicides as mentioned in the video. They can damage St. Aug. Thanks for watching.
