You're right, it's amazing how many lawn channels assume we have their type of grass, or at least their temp zone. I'll spend some time here, thanks. Looking at seed heads helps a lot, too. I see both stolons and seed heads that suggest Bermuda for me, so that's how I'll treat it and see what happens. I'm in upper middle TN.
Funny how you nailed it. My neighbor who grew up here in Idaho Falls in the country next to me called it pasture grass. You have shown it to be Kentucky and tall fescue. It was planted on an acre and half originally to replace the pasture around the house, and 30 years later, it’s a bitch to keep growing. But now I know a bit more how to take care of it thanks to you.
This was a great refresher on how to identify grass types. As a cool season guy with a mix of Fescue, Rye and Bluegrass in my yard I can say that Fescue is easy to pick out, kbg and rye can sometimes be a little harder to distinguish (at least for me) they blend together very well
@@BudgetLawns Anytime my man! With cool season turf, it's OK to mix and match cultivars together and actually their are benefits to doing that as opposed to one stand alone cultivar. The only exception is bentgrass that doesn't blend with the other grass types at all.
I'm in a new development. They put my sod down in November. My neighbor is getting their sod put down today so I walked outside and asked the contractor. Pretty easy.
Not always. I asked my builder what sod variety they used. I knew it was bermuda, but I wanted to know the bermuda cultivar. Couldn't tell me which one as there are many. But overall, yes, it's not hard. However, many people find it to be. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Or should I choose a weed grass to encourage?
Bermudagrass. I’m in the transition zone in northern arkansas with hard clay soil. Temps in the 90s as well. Bermuda is my suggestion as long as you don’t have a lot of shade. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
The problem is that my lawn care company didn't even know what grass or weed grass I have in my lawn and they got confused 😁😅 They even told me that flower can grow out of the tip of the grass leaves! I thought that is a Noble prize-winning invention, isn't it?

I usually don't have to start until late spring after the rainy weather has passed. Once it's green and growing though, it needs one inch a week. So it's all weather dependent. Hope this helps. Thank ya!

So question I am most definitely in the cool season map section. Cause I am in Ontario Oregon Idaho area and they don't even sell the cool grasses here. They only sell bermuda and other warm season.Transitional season grasses, so are my working with the wrong grasses
I live in central Georgia, is their a certain blend of Bermuda that anyone would recommend. I just bought a house and am fairly young and have no clue what to look for but I want a beautiful yard by next year and and ready to make it happen.
I have a house with Centipede grass. I live in the cool season part of Ohio. The house was built in 1910, and apparently has had this type of grass since then. When I first saw it, I asked people what type of grass it is? I was told it couldn’t be Centipede. After doing my research, I’m confident it’s Centipede. It’s light green, and grows slow, I cut it every two weeks. It’s uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. It doesn’t like to be walked on a lot, and it turns completely brown in cold months. Do you agree?
Is it possible to have multiple types of grass? I live in Houston, TX and my lawn is 80% weed and the small pieces i see of grass aren’t always similar to each other. I see St. Augustine section where the grass is thick and has those vines on top of the soil connecting each other but then i also see individual patches of grass. Im trying to kill all these weeds and identifying what type of grass i have is very difficult
I have either St Augustine or Bermuda in my cool season lawn and I live north east and I might be looking to transition to a full time cool season or just making that entire part of my lawn warm season so it looks more uniform. I need a way to kill or get rid of the warm season grass without using a bunch of herbicides (I'll use it if I have to) and I'm not trying to break the bank. I've tried uprooting them on one side of my lawn and it seemed to work but eventually it started reappearing a few months after I put down my cool season grass seed so in the winter my law looks like a cheetahs fur. I've been searching online for any information or at least a tutorial about transitioning but I've barely found anything concrete. Can anyone point me in a direction or offer any advice? I'm trying to get ahead while the warm season grave and weeds are still dormant. Also most of the lawn care stores in my area do not carry any warm season grass of any type so that's part of the reason I'm looking to transition to cool season

@@BudgetLawns looks like I’m going with Bermuda turf! Thanks a lot! Do you have any videos or a playlist on seeding. I’m going to try to kill off all these weeds and hopefully this fall or next spring I can seed the lawn
I live in Massachusetts and I tried this grass identifying app and it said I have a mixture of Zoysia and St. Augustin. Is this possible if I am in the cooler grass zone?!
@@BudgetLawns if you had to guess, what would grass type would you say is most common in Massachusetts? Is there a way I can send you a picture of the grass so you can take a look? I want to figure this out so I can figure out how to take care of it. I have some brown spots and spots that are bald already with just dirt. It s frustrating but I know each type of grass is treated differently.
If you couldn't identify it through this video, then I'm not sure I could either. The types in this video are the most common. You'd likely have one of the cool season turfs mentioned. I made this video so people could use it to make a determination to the best of their ability. That's all I could do too. I am far from an expert. Sorry.
It’s just not a common grass. I don’t know a single person with it. The main grass types that folks are most likely to have are mentioned in this video. Of course l, there are others. Thanks for watching. Appreciate ya.
I still have no idea which grass I have and why my type isn't mentioned according to it's main standout characteristic: I'm in Georgia, so it should be a warm season grass, and it's incredibly short. When I mow it I can use a very short 2.5 setting on my deck height (other grass I use a 4.5), and aside from lots of weed intrusion, particularly crab grass, it doesn't need any watering or other maintenance. It's not putting-green type grass, it can't be cut that short as far as I know. I'm at the point where I'm going to take clippings to my local sod supplier.
@@BudgetLawns So it's not as simple as noting the grass height? Any other grass that I've mowed would be burned if I clipped it that low.... The lawn I have the grass doesn't even want to grow high. Is this not a characteristic particular to one type?
Height does help to indicate grass type, but just about any grass not mowed will grow high, even bermuda. It just depends on your current mowing habits and other cultural practices. There are a lot of factors at play. It's not ever black and white in lawn care.
Bent grass is very easy to find. Late June in Ohio its the first grass to go dormant and the last grass to wake up in the spring. In the mid fall it rocks out and thrives. It does not handle drought very well. I had an infestation of it in my yard. I cut tall, 3.75 to 4 inches. Bent grass at the height will not stand up. It just mats down. It is a very high maintenance grass that is not ideal for a yard in my opinion.
Yup. In my area it’s only used on golf greens. Takes a lot of water and air flow in the heat of summer. Not ideal for most homeowners. Thanks for watching and the input.
@@BudgetLawns oh lastly i am not talking about the specialty cultivars of bent grass. I am talking about the generic run of mill bent grass. I am sure there are high end cultivars availible.
I'm in north east Oklahoma, a transition zone, but it should be called, extreme zone. Because it gets very cold here, AND extremely hot and humid here.
What do I use to get rid of everything BUT my Kentucky blue? In Canada - you lay down fresh sod it looks nice for two years until everything else takes over. Help!!!!
Thers so many other kinds I feel like. Those are professional grasses people plant, but what about clover and broad leaf weeds, do certain chemicals kill specific grasses? And can one good grass weed out the rest of your random grass yard if you seed it enough?
There are many kinds. This video just details the main grasses a homeowner would likely have for a turfgrass lawn. There are far too many to discuss in a video. Not to mention, they wouldn't apply to many people. Yes, there are selective herbicides that kill weeds but not grass. Then there are non selective herbicides that will kill everything it touches. Yes, clover, crabgrass and other weeds can beat out a grass yard if it has the conditions to thrive and continually goes to seed to spread.
PLEASE COULD YOU HELP WITH ANY ONLINE MARKET I COULD EASILY GET BERMUDA & AUGUSTINE EASILY DELIVERED TO ME IN WEST AFRICA OVER A VERY SHORT TIME FRAME? THANKS

I still can’t tell what I have 😂 I’m in north Texas so the transition zone. Think I have fescue but it’s really thin. Can’t hardly see it because I’m just now starting on my lawn it’s a new lawn that’s just covered in weeds.
Haha, it can be a challenge sometimes. In N TX, you'll likely either want bermuda or st. augustine. Check this vid out and see if it helps. ruclips.net/video/A4cTujEvSCI/видео.html Thanks for watching. Good luck.

I’d have a hard time believing that. Seems off. But without seeing it, I’d never say never. Appreciate ya watching.
Sorry.
@@BudgetLawns thank you for your help and the video!! Keep doing a great job!
You bet. Thank you. Appreciate ya.
😃 Thanks
👊👊 thank you!
@@BudgetLawns You’re welcome ☺️
What is that grass that u showed, when u said clumps? Time 2:29 Thanks
Fescue
Transition zone here. I have about 6 different types in my yard. No mention of Bahia? It's not the coastal grass people think it is.
In this case you’ll need to do that or take it to a local extension office for identification. Thanks for watching.
What happens when you grow tall fescue in the deep south? Does it go brown in the summer?
Likely would. Thanks for watching.
Can I grow Kentucky bluegrass in Texas?
I wouldn't try it. Too hot for KBG.
@@BudgetLawns i bought 7 pounds of Jonathan green that I won’t be able to use 😞
Finally it's clear! Thanks
Glad it helps. Thanks for watching. Appreciate ya.
Shit, I have at least 3/4 cool season grasses in my lawn. The bent grass I don’t think so. Well at least I know what I’m working with now. Thanks man
Awesome. Glad it helps. Thanks for watching.
Im in north texas near dallas. I have half bermuda and half weeds and various other stuff lol
Thanks for watching.
I'm in a transitional zone-mid missouri. Can I mix tall fescue with zoysia?
That's a little far north for zoyzia. The harsher winters has more of a potential to hurt it then even though the temps are warm enough in summer.
@@BudgetLawns thanks
After a little more thought and research into this for ya, look into Meyer Zoysia. Looks like you could have some success there with it. 👍👍
👍👍
I'm in north east Oklahoma, a transition zone, but it should be called, extreme zone. Because it gets very cold here, AND extremely hot and humid here.
I'm in northwest Arkansas, so I know this all too well.
What do I use to get rid of everything BUT my Kentucky blue? In Canada - you lay down fresh sod it looks nice for two years until everything else takes over. Help!!!!
Gosh, I wish it were that easy to answer. First thing...start mowing more.
@@BudgetLawns I mow twice a week. The grass grows like crazy. I regularly fertilize and I have irrigation
Have you looked into Canada's herbicide restrictions? It may be different there.
@@BudgetLawns where I live you can’t use any herbicide whatsoever. Even insecticides are heavily restricted. I’m curious what works though.
That’s tough. Lots of mowing and hand picking seems like the only option.
If i send you a picture or video of my grass can you tell me what type I have?
I’m lucky.I have at least 5 grasses in my lawn.
Bermuda, thanks
You should have covered Bahia grass in the south
Maybe in another one. Thanks for watching and the feedback.
Hello and good morning I may have one of this two type of grass Kentucky 31 or bluegrass, Tall fescue who can I send you a picture
It’s very hard for me to tell through pictures. That’s why I point to looking at the growth pattern and leaf types.
Living in Pa
What I meant was, the opposite, if unwanted grass can take over, can TURF grass that you plant take over a random yard of grasses just by seeding ?
Over time it could with the proper cultural practices. It would take some time, especially if you didn’t use weed herbicides.
@@BudgetLawns ok that's what I was wondering, I wanted a pro to answer that cuz I had a feeling it would be a lot of work.
You didn't cover my grass type. POA Grass 😂
🤣🤣🤣 thanks for watching.
PLEASE COULD YOU HELP WITH ANY ONLINE MARKET I COULD EASILY GET BERMUDA & AUGUSTINE EASILY DELIVERED TO ME IN WEST AFRICA OVER A VERY SHORT TIME FRAME? THANKS
Sorry. I don’t know of any markets that could do that.
Thanks 👍 for kind information
👊 appreciate you.
Creeping bentgrass is horrible…im in Michigan and have been chaseing it out of our yard….then we had a service mow a few yrs back and they also, mowed for a golf course….so u guessed it…we have golf course greens grass in our nice lawn now……🙄
Sorry to hear that. It sure is a booger once it starts creeping in. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Did you watch the video?

😂
What about Bahia grass?
Sorry. Don’t know much about it. As mentioned, I focused on the most common warm and cool season grasses that most homeowner might have.
Of course I have to be in the transition Zone
Congratulations. It’s a great place to be. Thanks for watching.
Cant figure this out 😢
If you have an iPhone try taking a picture and using the plant identifier. I think there are apps out there to help as well.
