Great video. When you pull out the weeds, are you patching it with seed+soil mix?
Thank you. No I just let the Bermuda spread to fill it in. I have hybrid Bermuda which cannot be seeded and shouldn’t be mixed…in my opinion if possible.
Thanks for the information just a few questions
1) how closely together can you use the pre emergent peoduct you use and fertilizer? Let's say a 16% nitrogen one? Time them apart ?
2) you don't or can't use them in summer ? ( do they make a spray )?
3) how does this effect trying to grow grass ?
1. Same time
2. I don’t but you can use them in the summer. Granular only for what I use.
3. Do not use if seeding to grow grass. Will prevent that too.
Thanks for watching.
I always love your attitude toward lawn care. It comes after family. So many RUclips lawn guys seems like all they do is lawn care and ignore their kids. 👌🏼
Appreciate that. I can’t underscore how little time I actually spend in the lawn compared to how much I spend with my wife and kids. The way it should be. 👊👊
☀Great video! I, too, love walking in the evenings and pulling those sneaky weeds that have popped up. 😎
Thanks man. Hope you had a great Labor Day weekend!!
Not overseeding this fall so decided doing a pre-em this fall around Sept. Cool season lawn , thanks for the info Travis
Right on buddy. Thanks so much for stopping by!
Can I use the liquid instead of the granulated? Thx, great job!!!!
The liquid is a post emergent, not pre emergent. Thanks so much for watching.
I use Prodiamine dispersible granules which is mixed with water and applied with a sprayer and have had good results. The trick is to learn how to distribute the spray at 1 gallon per 1,000 sq. ft. The best way is to mark off a 1,000 sq. ft on your drive way if it is large enough. And fill your sprayer with a gallon of water and start spraying to see how fast you need to walk and how far off the ground to hold your spray tip. An area marked off at 500 sq. ft. and your spray tank filled with a 1/2 gal. of water will work, too. Both type of pre emergents, granular or Prodiamine DG, recommends at least a 1/2” of rain or manual watering to activate.
Are there any drawbacks to a forth application at mid summer? I feel better with this continuous year round approach.
Not that I know of. Lots of folks will do one. I just skip it to save a little extra money. Good question. Thank you for watching.
I find your format and presentation to be refreshing. Your content is informative and without fluff, please don’t change.
Thank you. Just the kind of feedback I need to make sure y’all get what you want. I appreciate you 🙏🙏.
@:Mosey: Ferocious I get your point, but I hate to break it to you, you’re in the minority on this one. If I could do 1 minute videos and get the same channel growth and analytics, I would. It would save me time too. I think I made it clear in the video how valuable my time is to me. To act like your time is the only time that’s valuable is a bit selfish don’t ya think? The fact is, short lawn tip videos are not what true lawn people want. Trust me, I’ve asked…many times. You see, lawn care is a life style hobby for some people. You know, kinda like cars, boating, camping, etc. They enjoy the lengthier lawn talk (or “superfluous” talk as you called it). For those that see lawn care as a hassle and are only looking for quick tips to fix their dumpster fire yard with as little commitment as possible, which sounds like you, I can see why they only want 1 minute videos. They’re not willing to put in the work it takes for a beautiful yard in the first place. There are RUclips Shorts for those people. The truth is, I upload Shorts and lose subscribers. I upload full length videos and gain them. You have to know your audience as a creator and what the community is looking for. In lawn care (for now) it’s not shorter videos. That may change, and I will always be observing and adapt if necessary. I just love the know-it-all comments like yours, because they’re more times than not wrong. And I’m sure none of my explanation will change your thinking, which is typical of the type. Regardless, I enjoy giving it as other people will read it too. Thank you for watching and the feedback though. I’ll respectfully disregard it however. Have a great day.
@@BudgetLawns great explanation of why you do things the way you do. Those short videos always leave me with more questions. Your videos are awesome and I am following your lawn care protocol which has greatly improved my front and back lawns. I’m about throw down some triple 10 fertilizer and then mid to end of September do my pre-emergent. Thanks from San Antonio, TX.
@@DGA0602 thanks so much man. Really appreciate the kind words and support. Glad my videos have been able to help you. That’s what it’s all about. Keep up the great work in the lawn. 👊👊
@@BudgetLawns thanks!
That edging is on point, what tool do you use for it? Looks like a good 2” barrier with the grass and mulch. Beautiful lawn, great content
Thank you. I just use my stihl string trimmer. I leave a barrier between the grass and mulch so I don’t sling mulch everywhere. I don’t see why others don’t do that. I’d be cleaning up mulch all the time if I didn’t. Appreciate ya watching and commenting. 👊👊
@@BudgetLawns I agree I do and have the same thing at my home just a maintenance thing is all.
I absolutely love your attitude and approach! So enjoyable to listen to your teaching style! I live in zone 5b and have cool season grass. I want to do the pre-emerge plan, but not sure when I should put it down as you were applying to Bermuda. I fight the same weeds as you do, but have snow cover in Jan, and sometimes in March as well. Please advise.
Thank you so much. Appreciate the kind words. From my understanding from conversations with cool season folks, they'll typically apply once the snow cover is gone then again sometime in June or July. Hope this helps. Thanks again.
For my lawn it would take 15 bags per year. That's $594. per year. The Andersons offer a 40# bag that covers 12,880 sf that I use three times a year that only cost me about $195. per year. Works really well and I don't have Crabgrass.
Yup, it can get expensive depending on lawn size. Simply stating which product I use because it works. But I don’t treat a lot of space so it’s not that expensive. Glad you’ve found something that works at an affordable price. 👍👍 appreciate ya watching and sharing.
I watch you videos all the time, you offer great advice snd your yard looks great.
Thanks so much. 👊👊
If my Bermuda lawn was put in Sept 2023, can I use Spectracide weed stop? Plus, I missed putting it down in March. Is it to late to put down in April? I live in the south.
I would not put any down. It hasn’t had a full season of growth yet. That’s my approach. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns So, I just need to pull weeds this season? I have been pulling every day and there is no end in sight. And, I will not forget the pre-emergent in September this year!
Mowing a lot, proper watering and fertilizing will take care of a huge chunk for you. It just takes a little patience. Don't get distracted from the basics by everything you see online. Here's what mine lawn looked like first season at the beginning then end. No weed killer, just hand pulling, mowing, watering, and fertilizing.

@@BudgetLawns Thanks so much for the quick response. I am on the right track.
Been battling Virginia buttonweed, crabgrass, and dallisgrass all year with a new lawn .. soooo hard to get rid of. Tons of trees and shrubs so root active is a tricky one for VB. MSMA and dormant round up. Planning to use prodiamine this next spring. I swear VB will germinate and thrive in the thickest lawn. Lawn was abused for years before I got it unfortunately.
Time. Just takes time doing the right things. You’ll get there. Don’t sweat it. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Keep doing the channel the way you have been doing sweet straight to the point and very informative. Thank you for not forgetting about us up in the snowy climate.

I for one am glad to not watch you cutting the grass - so many have videos with them mowing, I think I have the mowing down pat don’t need to watch someone else mowing theirs lol
Thank ya sir. We’re on the same page. Great feedback to keep steering me in this same direction. Appreciate you. 👊👊
The way you teach reminds me of an old pastor of mine. You’re like… a minister of lawn care. Thanks for what you do!
Haha, I've heard that a lot. Some people started calling me the grass pastor. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Appreciate your support! 👊
Looking at the reviews on Lowes it appears most are using this thinking it's a Post Emergent. There are a few comments saying not for Bermuda as it kills it. Any advice to prevent it from killing my Bermuda?
Disregard those reviews. It will not kill bermuda. Those people likely have no clue what they're doing. The product has both pre and post emergent properties. However, I don't use it for the post emergent and don't apply it according to the bag instructions to get that. I use it only as a pre emergent, which should be watered in to activate it. I've covered this in several other videos. Sorry I didn't here. Hope this helps though. Thanks so much for watching and the question.
How did you know I put down pre emergent this morning? 👀
Haha, niiiice. That's too funny. Perfect timing. Appreciate ya man!
Does this apply to St. Augustine grass? Thanks! Just found your channel.
So I missed the Jan preemergent application... now I'd got several weeds up (central Oklahoma). Can I spray Target 6 (MSMA) now to kill weeds that have come up AND another preemergent or should the MSMA be enough for now? Thanks for your help!
With how warm the weather has been, I'd go ahead and get a pre-emergent down. As far as the weeds coming up go, I don't ever worry about killing those. They may stand out in the dormant bermuda but once it heats up and you get going with regular lawn care, those things will be gone. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.
When do you seed for bare spots? How does pre-emergent effect the grass seeds,? Thank you
What if I want to re-seed with winter rye grass, will this hurt that seed from germination? Down south Arizona
Thanks for the great video. Does it matter when pre-emergents are applied in terms of when the grass was cut? For example, should I avoid doing it right after cutting the lawn, or perhaps that is the best time? Thank you!
Right after I mow is my go to time. Appreciate ya watching.
How would you, “water it in”, if it is January? Or, do you just let the natural elements, take care of it, in the cold of winter? You’ve mentioned, how important it is, to water Spectricide in as a pre-emergent, that is why I ask. Thank you!
Great question. In January, I time it before good rain chances in the forecast. Even if that means putting it down a pinch early or a a pinch late. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
👍💪
👊👊
I have sandburs in central Texas and am going to try pre-emrgent for the first time. I am designing a set up for carrying water and spraying it as I do not have power or water there. Luckily the sandburs do not cover the whole property, but are in a strip about 25' x 100'.
👍👍 thanks for watching!
New home owner with all these buggers in my lawn.. it’s mid summer so all I’m tring to do is water proper weed wack at the problem areas and sharp mow high set… subscriber.. St. Louis Mo…
Solid plan. Appreciate you! 👊 Happy 4th.
I wanted to give this method a try but the granular pre-emergent isn’t available in Texas. I wonder why. The liquid weed stop post emergent is available
I’ve heard that before and not sure why. If the Lesco 0 0 7 is available then I’d go with that. Thanks for watching.
Will this pre emergent prevent your over seeding rye winter grass from growing?
Thanks for the video it’s very informative. After an application of the pre-emergent do I follow up by watering the lawn?
Yes you do. Thanks for watching.
Unspoken problem all lawn YTer don’t talk about. If your neighbor don’t care about the weeds. Sooner or later their weeds will invade your lawn too. Neighbor creeping Charlie invading my lawn even with the fence between property line
Oh, I talk about it…

Thanks for watching.
Does this apply to cool season lawns and warm season lawns?
Thank you for your videos on lawn maintenance. My question is- If I use preemergent and want to fix patches with new seeds, will it affect the germination of the new seeds?
Yes, it will prevent the seeds from germinating. Do not use pre emergent when seeding. Thanks so much for watching.
Your videos have given me hope. I have spent too much money on post-emergents and pre-emergents. It's so discouraging when you do not get the results you expected. I have considered paying for pros to take care of the weeds in my lawn. I look forward to having a good lawn this year. Thanks for the information.😃
Glad to hear that. Appreciate ya watching and sharing! Good luck this season!
Do these rules apply for all grasses or just Bermuda grass? Thx
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for keeping it simple yet informative.
Awesome. Glad to hear. Appreciate you watching and the feedback!
Gonna try this. I have crabgrass but also the "Devil's Weed", aka, Chamberbitter.
Right on. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
i now nothing about lawns .is there a product that does it all?

Awesome. Glad to have you. Thanks so much. Hope you find lots of helpful stuff. To answer your question. Yes, water pre-emergent in. 👍Good luck in your lawn this season. Happy to help if you need it.
Will this work for St Augustine & Centipede? Thanks great video
This should work well in most warm season climates. The further south you are, you could likely bump the apps back a month or so. Just make sure that whatever product you use is safe on those grass types. Some are not safe on the 2 you mentioned. Read the label for sure. Thank you for watching and the comment. I appreciate you.
So what do I do with the 100 mounds of fire ants? 😒
I'll just spot treat ant mounds with a bug killer. That's all I'll do. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns i guess it depends on location too. Regular ants are easy to kill, fire ants are a special breed lol
Haha. Yeah. I didn’t even consider that. You’re right!
Great info Travis! I usually do only spring pre emergent here on my cool season lawn. I do the split app method, half the rate in early spring and then a 2nd application 6 weeks later. Different battle with warm season lawns and the fact that you guys could deal with more in the winter months when we're usually frozen and snow covered
Thanks buddy. For sure. Different set of conditions. You got that right. Appreciate ya as always. 👊
You’ve got a proven method. I like it!
I also enjoy pulling weeds... if there aren’t too many.
Does the pre-emergent control goose grass?

Yeah please don’t switch up and show us you mowing etc bro hahaha
Haha. Thanks man. Gonna stick with what has been working.
Do you still water pre-emergent granules during the dormant period in fall/winter?
I time it with coming rain. So yes. Good question. Thanks for watching.
Applied to early for my baby grass PR/KBG/TTF mix and never really grew. I did another re-seed and do not plan on putting pre emerg down for 2 growing seasons. To much work to get it right then dealing with root pruning of the new grass. Although it works amazing i am gonna wait.
Great video thanks! I feel the same about pulling weeds in the yard.
Thank you. Appreciate you watching and commenting!
Curious to know if this is the program and schedule to follow for a St Augustine lawn in South Carolina. If not, what do you recommend? Appreciate your being willing to do these videos to help out those of us struggling with our lawns. Now, go have fun with your family.
Since you’ve got a warm season lawn like me, I think it’ll work just fine. Just make sure the product you choose is safe for st. Aug. read the label to be sure. Thanks so much for watching.
Hi, sir!

Poa Annua is what I deal with and it seems to show up in the spring.
The fall and January application is what will prevent an outbreak in more mild climates through the winter and early spring. Poa seeds typically sprout in the spring but you have to apply pre emergent ahead of time to prevent it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
😂my dude. You shouldn’t live in your lawn
Oh I don’t. I live in a house. 😎
The preemergent in Weed stop is for crabgrass and possibly Poa annua if you apply it in the fall. It won’t prevent any other types of weeds from emerging. The rest of weed stop is post emergent
That’s not true. The active pre emergent ingredient is dithiopyr. It is much more effective at controlling a variety of weeds than you say, especially at higher rates. The before and afters in this video show this. Thanks for watching.
“Do not live in the lawn”.... hell ya man!
Thanks brother. 👊👊👊
Sounds like a good plan that will work, thanks.
👍👍 thanks for watching!
2 of those months you mentioned we have snow on the ground. Winter weeds? Get real nothing grows in the winter the dirt could be frozen 36 inches deep
To think all lawn videos apply to all lawns is a little silly don’t ya think? I live in the south and speak to warm season bermudagrass. It’s too difficult for me to handhold everyone in every video I make.
What's up Travis.
What’s up. Hope you’re well!
But wait ... Detaching, aerating n overseeing occur early Sept. Ya can't use any preemergent Sir.
Wrong. We don’t do that in the south for warm season bermudagrass. Totally different playbook than cool season turf.
Huh… I assumed I needed a fall and late winter treatment… but this suggests I can do it twice before we come out of dormancy
That will also be good. The schedule in this video is a sure fire way to be covered most of the time. Weather, product used, etc are other factors that can also change things. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Can’t put pre emergent down before seed. The seed won’t germinate. You’ll have to wait at least 3 months for most products. Sorry.
@@BudgetLawns 😔thank you! Appreciate you for what you do!
You’re welcome. Thank you for watching.
Well this had nothing to do with those of us that live in the northern states. We're talking snow from say mid November to April.
Your point?
I believe 😆👍
🤣🤣👍👍👊👊
When do you apply fertilizer when doing the weedstopper? This whole lawn care is insane. So much information. I need a step by step information.
It does take some time and research to figure it all out. It is really hard to give each person a step by step because everyone has different circumstances. Many questions have to be answered before giving advice. I'd have to know your grass type and location and what fertilizer you plan using.
@@BudgetLawns well since we're answering questions 😅, I am from Iowa and Plan using that stress blend and the Flagship ( same brand )in the fall . How far apart should I apply these ? Also I am trying to grow grass.
That product you use seems to have bad ratings, just an observation, it seems to work great for you. Thanks

New home and sod lawn this past March. Pre emergent in Sept? Located in central AR
Did you hear what I said about me waiting for my new sod lawn to go completely dormant before applying pre emergent? I covered that in the video. Not to be rude, but I make the videos with the info to answer questions so they don’t get repeated in the comments. Thanks for watching.
Why a granular vs a hose end spray /pump sprayer? I know some say use both options
Good question. I just prefer the ease of granular. Takes less time. Spread it and forget it. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns I kind of guessed that but always curious why some chose one over the other. So thats a granulated that doesn't require watering after?
It does, but I will shift my application slightly depending on rain chances. We get decent rain chances during those times of year, so I never have to water it in. Mother Nature does it for me.
@@BudgetLawns love when that happens.
👊👊 the best.
good stuff here!

I can't find it now but someone on comments did math on this product about going heavy to have it potent like commercial products. And now I can't find it as I have 550sq ft and I need to put it down this Sunday right before it is scheduled to water
I recall that one, but can't remember where it is.
@@BudgetLawns ok yesterday afternoon I just put 2.5lbs on my lawn. The blades were damp. But lawn wasnt soaked. I haven't watered it in yet. The sprinklers are coming on tomorrow morning. Is this a way for it to stick to any weeds if I have any. I don't see any except maybe a tiny clover here and there. And then water it in to get the pre emergent in there for 90 days?
@@4rdzlla Yup. That's what the bag calls for. It'll stick to weeds to kill them as post-em. When watered in, it'll activate as a pre-em.

January and mid-March in Minnesota would be on top of the snow😊
Yes, you're right there. This is definitely geared more towards southern, warm season lawns like mine. Thanks so much watching.
How do I do this and still overseed a lawn?
Pre emergent shouldn’t be used when overseeding. It will prevent the seeds from germinating. Sorry. Not the news you want. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns thx. If I have a lawn I inherited that is almost 100% weeds what steps in mid sept is first?
