    With so many choices on the market it gets difficult picking the right product. Most of us choose a product that is rated for crabgrass control.
    The Ginja categorizes pre emergents into three categories.
    Group 1 - General Pre emergents with Anti-rooting technology
    Prodiamine
    Isoxaben
    Combined products with Trifluralin (used in preen, prevents rhizome shoots from grass) and Isoxaben (snapshot)
    Group 2 - General Pre emergent with anti-rooting and post emergent control for crabgrass
    Dithiopyr
    Dithiopyr will control crabgrass up to the 3 leaf stage making dithiopyr a valuable spray. The marketing is a little deceiving. Although it does act as a post emergent spray up to the 3 leaf stage for crabgrass and some winter annuals it does not provide any other post emergent services for weeds post germination.
    Dithiopyr has excellent anti-rooting properties. It permeates into clay very well. I find it doesn't work as well as an over winter product because of the permeability and I don't recommend it for sandy soils.
    Group 3 - General Pre emergent with anti-rooting and post emergent control for annual and biennial weeds
    pendimethalin - excellent anti-rooting pre emergent with a post emergent control that kills simple broadleafs. the kicker is the post emergent control disrupts stems of annuals and biennial weeds before they leaf making this a very valuable tool for people with annual and biennial broadleaf weed issues. Sprays are far more effective than the granular counterpart for post emergent control. Pendimethalin will stain.
    Mesotrione - Pre emergent properties and a broad list of annual and biennial post emergent weed control. This is a great tool for someone who intends to overseed there lawn. I recommend 2 applications before the overseed. Be sure to pick a warm season or cool season grass that's on the label that won't be effected by the product.

    Pendimethalin has a tendency to STAIN. Also note the post emergent control for pendimethalin 2G states "pendulum 2g controls weeds as they germinate but will not control established weeds. Therefore, areas to be treated should be free of established weeds. For the control of established weeds, pendulum 2g may be used in conjunction with herbicides registered for postemergence use. See description for more information, as well as the products I used today. If you're looking for the best treatments for your lawn, check out my favorite products:

    In meds like antibiotics there is something called synergistic effects. This is where it's possible to use less antibiotic if two are used together. They give a greater effect than if you added the separate effects. So you can use less of each one.
    Has anyone done a study to see if herbicides can have this synergistic effect?

    • @pestandlawnginja

      They do. It's mostly salt and negative effects on foliar response.

    early spring 2019 I used a pre emergent crabgrass preventer and we've never had such a beautiful lawn. The bag was white with black lettering. It said crabgrass preventer as a lable and one bag of granular material covered 10,000 sq ft. Couldn't find it this year so we used Scots Crabgrass pre emergent and our lawn is inundated with dandelions. Do you have any idea who made the product we used?

    Used HJ every 6 months, give or take, for several decades both in my yard and most of my mowing customers yards. Always went heavy and early in Bermuda yards but had to wait until after overseeding and germination for the fall app with fescue, usually late Oct/early Nov in OK. Hit it again in March and had very few weeds to deal with after a full season of Barricade.

    Good advice as usual! I get a lot of grassy annual weeds, crab grass wasn't too bad last year but I really want to take out the POA, foxtail, barnyard grass (and quack if at all possible but I'm probably screwed either way with quackgrass). My goal this spring and summer is to control weeds and make a good foundation for a heavy overseeding and renovation mid August, so the weeds arent causing problems and choking the seed out later on. Any suggestions? I was thinking about doing a 4 month app rate of prodiamine in a couple weeks. And maybe tenacity if it will be needed just prior to seeding in August. Prodiamine is quite a bit cheaper than dithipoyr.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад +2

      If you have the extra $$ I would do an 2 to 3 month app of pendimethalin and then an app of tenacity every two weeks followed by the overseed on the 2nd or 3rd app.

    okay, so I have this "Annual bluegrass" Botanical name: Poa annua; common name: annual meadow grass, Annual bluegrass, Los spear grass, Six week grass; Genus: Bluegrass (Poa). and every year it has gotten thicker, even though I have spent many hours pulling it in previous years. What can I use to kill this stuff? It's 400 times worse this year than last year and not sure what to do. According to my app. I took a picture to identify it, and it's native to Europe and Asia. It says Poa annua is known commonly as both annual bluegrass and poa. The Latin name is derived from the Greek word poa, which is a type of fodder grass. I've been pulling it up by hand, and according to this app, this is one method to prevent infestation again, which I have done every time I saw a new plant come up, but this year it covers, at least, 30% of my yard. It says herbicides may be required but in the fall to prevent the new seeds from coming up. Have you had to deal with any of this? I have Tenacity and Quinclorac XLR8. In previous years I have also used TZone with them. Do you have any suggestions? I did notice the roots are small and shallow. I guess I can breakout the trusty dethatch rake ugh lol It's crazy how much has come up this year; because I spend many hours every summer pulling unwanted weeds as well as spot spraying and full cover spray as well. It's really like a nightmare this year. what will kill what has already grown?

    Hey ginja, it’s a little pricey, but it’s good for picking up a new lawn that never had lawncare service and it’s spring and it’s loaded with weeds, they have dimension w/ lockup... I know dithiopyr has post emergent tendencies but only in the early stages of leaf tiller and that’s where lockup takes over!!! Works VERY well for knock down power and preemergent... I only use it when it’s a new takeover and they have a good base to work with but also has a ton of weeds in all different phases of development!!

    My question is this. I overseeded last fall, and its now a solid 5 months since KYB and Rye germinated. Its time to prevent crabgrass, so Is my grass mature enough to handle Prodiamine? Or should I put down Tenacity?
    I have not applied ANY pre emergent at all ever.
    I did throw down more seed 4 weeks ago as a winter experiment to create a thicker lawn, but I am more focused on the young KYB and if prodiamine will hurt its root growth.

My concern has been about the need for pre-emergent to help control the excessive weed germination but also need to be able to germinate the new Bermuda. Tenacity may be the answer. I am in Greensboro, NC area so crabgrass will likely be germinating by mid-March. When should I apply and will I be OK over seeding with Bermuda? After first year, prodiamine would be my choice in Feb. Thanks for all your GREAT videos and sharing your expertise.

    This may be a long post sorry...
    Alabama, Zoysia, I started treating my lawn myself 2-3 yrs ago. I've always had a poa problem and noticed some crabgrass this year. I put out half rate of Dithiopyr in Feb and half rate of Scott's Halt yday...I started thinking y'day as I bought Scott's Halt.
    Would it hurt if I put out all three types of pre-ems all year? I'd buy the bags at my box stores that have NPK so I'd get the minerals needed.
    You think this would be a great idea for my poa problem?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад

      Great question. I would alternate them yearly. Zoysia can be really thick and it can be difficult to get the pre m where it needs to go. be sure to focus on application rate and also watering sufficiently to get the pre m down where it needs to be. If you were going to do a dual app I would do prodiamine late fall and late winter and dithiopyr spring as the temps get into the 50's.

    Ginja,
    Love your videos. You do a fantastic job. I have a question:
    I live in Oregon cool season grass (perennial rye grass with some fine rescue) I have two areas in my house front lawn looks amazing. I had some poa problems in the spring because I aerated and seeded last fall 2018 and the seed I used had some some percentage of other weeds in it. I am assuming it was poa. I removed those areas and put new sod and prodiamine(split app) and looks amazing.
    In the back I choose to leave the poa and do prodiamine and the lawns looks great but I can still see the areas with poa. I have to make a decision. I can’t use prodiamine because I reach my yearly max. I am not going to aerate or seed.
    My question is: if I use tenacity as a blanket application would that take care my poa problem or I am better off removing the areas with poa, add new sod or seed and blanket spray tenacity? Do I need to do a second application of tenacity 3 weeks after sep ? Do I need to add an ionic surfactant? If I heard correctly I need to wait 12 to 24 hours to water in tenacity? Sep 1 is when I am expecting temperatures to come down to 70 degrees.
    Another option was to use Dithiopyr 0-0-20 granular without removing the areas with poa. Or I can remove the poa, put new sod and then apply Dithiopyr?
    Any help it will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Год назад

      It all depends if the grass completed the germination process. You would commonly know this if the grass has grown in. Here's my 2c. pre emergents can stunt root development. If you had a lot of weeds in the past few years it may be worth putting down a pre emergent. but..... if you don't mind treating the weeds as they come it would be better for the development of the grass. The risk you run is there are certain types of weeds that will need to be pulled by hand as they will not be effected by herbicides.

      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад

      Prodiamine IMO does the best in those colder temps. dithiopyr will do well as long as it doesn't get too much rain to push it too far into the soil. Most pre emergents are not broken down by cold weather. Most are broken down by soil microbes. Hotter the weather more microbe movement.

    HI Ginja,
    I put some pre emergent along which comes with some fert when the ground was still frozen about a 3 weeks ago.
    I am now sacred to put that again once temps hit 55 as it might burn the lawn, what do you think i should do here?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад

      Pre emergent in and of itself has zero burning capabilities. Now, if you're saying that you put down a bag of pre emergent fertilizer there is potential of burning. Watch my video I posted today on nitrogen. Figure out how many lbs per 1000ft2 you put down and do some math. If the bag says 20.2.4, for example, take the first number (which is the nitrogen) and divide 100/20= 5lbs. that 5lbs of product per 1000ft will equal to 1lbs of nitrogen per 1000ft2. Burning occurs after we reach above 1.3 to 1.5 on average area dependent. what gets confusing is if your primary ingredient is Urea it's a whole different ball game. Urea will lose 50% of the Nitrogen to the atmosphere. So you double those numbers in essence. IMO its a total waste to use urea early spring. Ammonium sulfate is best for high ph and low ph nitrate nitrogens.

    Lawn Ginga, im Chris comming at you from Charleston S.C. I have palmetto St Augustine on sand that I put in last December and have a couple questions. I understand Dithopry, prodiamine and pendimethalin. However, i decided to go early with dithiopyr - max rate granular. Well, the soil was at 45 degrees, but it has rained several inches since application ' like 4 inches +. Do you think that application has "washed out?" Or could I possibly get some benifit? Also, am I too understand that with prodiamine you should mix isoxaben at the 50 degree mark? Any assistance would be appreciated.

      dithiopyr is a great product. 4" isn't too bad as long as it wasn't dumping. dithiopyr needs to be watered in with a minimum .5" of water. I try and remind people that it's not un common to water a lawn 2" to 3" per week and the pre emergents sustain just fine. I'm on the fence weather you'll need to re apply. it will all depend on how the water came crashing into the lawn.

    Good day Ginja Ninja! I have a Zoysia question regarding pre-emergent herbicides and young Zoysia. My Zenith Zoysia lawn was seeded the last week of August, 2019. I've mowed once at 1.5 inches, and I'm ready to mow again once the rain stops, again at 1.5 inches. Would you think there would be any chance of harming my lawn if I put down Prodiamine this fall or next spring while the Zoysia is dormant, or do you think the lawn is still a bit too new to risk it? If you feel it is too risky, at what point would you feel safe putting down a pre-emergent? Would it be later in the spring after mowing a few more times before the temps hit ~90 consistently here in humid Central Virginia, or just suck it up and use post-emergent herbicides during the year like 2, 4D and Quinclorac, and start my pre-emergent regimen next fall? Thanks in advance for your time and info!

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад

      Great questions. I prefer not to use pre emergents during new stages of growth, other than tenacity which you wouldn't be able to use on zoysia. I prefer to stay free of herbicides for the first 90 days. It's more of a preference than anything. But in my experience the pre emergents can cause rooting issues in the first little while.

I need to get bermuda planted for grazing, but the crabgrass is so thick nothing will grow. While not a lawn, will one of these work? Keep in mind, it's a pasture, so watering isn't an option. It's August, in Texas, can I put something down now to get a start before spring?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  3 года назад

      bermuda can be a booger to seed. seed germination is very slow moving. if you're in a hot part of texas bermuda will most likely be your best bet. You can always try to plug it one section at a time. once the bermuda gets thick enough it will ward other types of weeds off but it takes time. It's also a needy grass. It constantly grows off the stolon and needs to be scalped twice a year. I think zoysia would be a better choice.

    I just discovered your channel and wow, what a trove of detailed info. Historically, I haven't done much other then apply weed/feed fertilizer in Spring/Summer/Fall because I don't have irrigation and I'm on a full Acre in New England so I've always relied on Mother Nature for watering. Unfortunately, the lawn is pretty weed heavy so I'm considering a baseline dose of Tenacity this October to eliminate the current weeds, followed by dithiopyr later that month and again in the Spring with my usual fertilizing to get something looking somewhat respectable. Does this sound reasonable or would I be wasting my money until I get an irrigation system installed to properly water?

      I wouldn't recommend the dithiopyr unless the crabgrass is still in the 2 to 3 leaf stage. Prodiamine is much cheaper and stays in the soil better.
      As for the constant weed problems I would focus on a cheap calcium source and try to get some water to hell the grass

    I live in Michigan. I have a clay based lawn, (thanks to the builder removing the topsoil), it has taken 2 years of soil tests, peat moss top dressing, aerating, and post emergent treatments with 2,4D and quinclorac, but I finally have a really nice lawn. However, I had a bad dandelion problem in Spring of 2021 then crab grass issues in August 2021. I did a a major overseed project with 50lbs of KBG in mid September and top dressed with peat moss with a landzie roller, after core aerating the whole 15,000 ft2 yard. What would be your recommendation for a pre-emergent before the soil temps reach 55 degrees? I don't mind spending the money on a good product. I am unsure if I should go with Dithiopyr, Prodiamine, or something else. I am hoping to initially prevent the dandelions, but if a second app in late July would also prevent the crabgrass then I will do that. Whatever guidance you could give would be very much appreciated. I want to try and prevent any of these issues this growing season to allow the KGB room to fully mature to really thicken up the lawn. I also put in an irrigation system at the beginning of September last year so I could have complete control of the watering. Thank you.

    How are your soil temps? How close are you from applying your pre emergent?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад +1

      My local soil temps are hovering around 50 degrees. It's been snowing and sleeting all week. Most wouldn't think the soil is that warm IMO. We started putting down pre emergent march 1st. I'll be using tenacity and an overseed on my lawn this season so I'm holding off for a bit.

      Pest and Lawn Ginja I bought your same soil thermometer. I’ve been testing my temps. I’m looking to apply my Prodiamine next Saturday. It’s a great time of the year. Keep up the great content!

    going to overseed some small areas that need it this spring and use tenacity for pre-emergent. is this also I have a small area of zoysia grass. I s it also ok to use there?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  3 года назад

      tenacity will stress out your zoysia and possibly kill it. It's not for use with tenacity according to the label. Tenacity isn't a great pre emergent. it lasts about 3 weeks at best.

    I think I've screwed the pooch. I put down spectracide before I aerated. How show I go about it? It rained 1 day after applying also. I live in NC

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад +1

      spectracide makes a few different products. I assume you're talking about the crabgrass preventer. if so the rain is a good thing. Helps push it in. You may want to consider another application since you aerated.

    • @crandallscooking

      @@pestandlawnginja good deal. That is exactly what I used, the crabgrass preventer. I will put down another application and then spray the existing. Thanks.

    Hey Ginja, can you tell me what might happen if I were to put my winter rye down in early October then in late November put down a pre emergent. I'm in California and I have bermuda. This was a great vid by the way!

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Год назад +1

      as long as you can water it regularly you'll be fine. if humidity and temps spike you'll need to apply a preventive fungicide. but i think you'll be fine.

      @@pestandlawnginja Thanks for the response. I bought my house 8 years ago and always put rye but never a pre emergent. And I fight crabgrass all year long. Lol I am going to try my strategy this year and hope for the best. If it don't work then the following year I will just let bermuda go dormant and load up on pre emergent! Thanks again!!!

      3" or less is idea. dethatching and removing topical debris helps the placement and efficacy of the product.

    Hey new to the channel, very informative. I recently got into lawncare for my weed infested bermuda lawn. Average temperature in hawaii for my area is mid 80s. Can I put weed killer for grassy and broadleaf weeds before I put a pre emergent?

    • @pestandlawnginja

      It’s a soil issue. Clay is best aerated in the fall. Sand best in the spring
