Used HJ every 6 months, give or take, for several decades both in my yard and most of my mowing customers yards. Always went heavy and early in Bermuda yards but had to wait until after overseeding and germination for the fall app with fescue, usually late Oct/early Nov in OK. WOW Professor Ginja, Thank you! What an astounding video & presentation of complex info! So much of this is over my head so I will have to listen to this 2 or 3 more times and take notes. Just outstanding!!! V/r, Eric
Hey ginja, it’s a little pricey, but it’s good for picking up a new lawn that never had lawncare service and it’s spring and it’s loaded with weeds, they have dimension w/ lockup... I know dithiopyr has post emergent tendencies but only in the early stages of leaf tiller and that’s where lockup takes over!!! Works VERY well for knock down power and preemergent... I only use it when it’s a new takeover and they have a good base to work with but also has a ton of weeds in all different phases of development!!
STOKED!!! very informative and definitely cleared up my confusion. I just put down a granular with dithiopyr about a month ago. I need to wait a few more weeks before I overseed.
Thanks for breaking down the different pre emergent herbicides . The benefits and the problems you may have with certain ones. I know where i am at with bermuda grass is my main turf grass, that Tenacity is not an option. But the others are. Thanks again.
I subscribed my friend. As someone who hasn't used pre emergent in a long time and really is not an advocate of them, I really appreciate how informative and well conveyed this was. Nicely done, I really like your deep knowledge and straight forward delivery here without the fluff.....
Ginja thank you for all the great videos and helpful tips. You are hands down one of the best lawn care tubers on RUclips. Oh and that beard is really coming along nicely 🤘
You had a video with a special measuring cup that you were using for prodiamine/barricade.......where can I find that to buy??!! I’m tired of breaking out the scale or trying to remember how many teaspoons per square foot Etc. Thanks!!! Love the content you are putting out.
With using pre emergent one of the benefits in using them specifically for gardens it will allow to significantly help with weed control when it comes to using starts.
Great vid My question is this. I overseeded last fall, and its now a solid 5 months since KYB and Rye germinated. Its time to prevent crabgrass, so Is my grass mature enough to handle Prodiamine? Or should I put down Tenacity? I have not applied ANY pre emergent at all ever. I did throw down more seed 4 weeks ago as a winter experiment to create a thicker lawn, but I am more focused on the young KYB and if prodiamine will hurt its root growth. Thanks
If you're still in the process of overseeding I would recommend you stick with tenacity. however, even tenacity isn't rated for newly emerged grass 😒. You'll need to hold off a bit if you want the new seed to take and stay strong.
Great video and detail...thank you. I am in Charlotte with 2/3 acre lot and since it is now April I did not put down a pre-emergent yet. is it too late to do a PE? Can I just use the Tenacity now and then start with PE next year?
Awesome video. Thanks for breaking it down like that. I noticed the other day that Prodiamine comes in two different Weed Types. I'm gonna guess you are just taking about Crabgrass so you didn't cover that. In case I have Dallisgrass what is the punchline for it?
Pest and Lawn Ginja nice answer however I tried to purchase those two chemicals here in west Texas and the supplier would not sell them to me. As a was told it could only be sold to golf courses, I said what about a farmer? No dice 😫🛫 what do you suggest?
Love how we are seeing much more talk of cycling herbicides for prevention of weed resistance. From all that I've read/seen on the subject though, the product's Mode of Action/Class has to be rotated in order to increase efficacy... not the active ingredient. For example: Pendimethalin, Prodiamine, and Dithiopyr all fall into the same group classification (Group 3) which means rotating between those active ingredients will not improve efficacy. Sadly, I overlooked this when stocking up for my yearly plans... I've got more pre-em's falling into the same class than I'd really like to admit, hahaha!
It is true. There are some benefits to switching up active ingredients but the majority of the benefits is switching classes. The options are super limited unless you're going to mix up a batch of corn gluten meal at $8 to $12 per 1000ft2
I'm not sure if my problem would be included with this list but I have thistles spreading into my lawn from the unmaintained pasture next to it. Any suggestions? Thanks Ginja.
Hey Kevin! Sorry this comment went un replied. Thistle is best managed by a split app of prodiamine and using speedzone to spot spray. It'll take 2 seasons to filter out. be sure your watering properly the entire season to get the full use out of your pre emergents.
I have POA annua that I need to address this fall, can I use tenacity after I aerate and overseed? Or do I have to forgo seeding all together and just use prodiamine or Dimension? Thanks again for the great content.
I’m planning laying sod for the backyard, which currently overtaken by weed and crab grass. Which pre emergent should I use while tilling the soil for better results? Thanks.
Lawn ginja, i just put down Scotts weed & feed last week after reading the bag i didn't see any of these chemicals you mentioned can i put down one of these products you showed with out any harm to my lawn ? I'm located in Denver, Colo.
early spring 2019 I used a pre emergent crabgrass preventer and we've never had such a beautiful lawn. The bag was white with black lettering. It said crabgrass preventer as a lable and one bag of granular material covered 10,000 sq ft. Couldn't find it this year so we used Scots Crabgrass pre emergent and our lawn is inundated with dandelions. Do you have any idea who made the product we used?
Hi Ginga, so glad you made this video. I am faced with helping a friend with an acre yard currently overrun with Dallisgrass, crabgrass and buttonweed. I treated with Blindside and MSMA for some current control but my concern is next year. I am not sure there is much Bermuda to push so am considering over seeding in mid May next year. My concern has been about the need for pre-emergent to help control the excessive weed germination but also need to be able to germinate the new Bermuda. Tenacity may be the answer. I am in Greensboro, NC area so crabgrass will likely be germinating by mid-March. When should I apply and will I be OK over seeding with Bermuda? After first year, prodiamine would be my choice in Feb. Thanks for all your GREAT videos and sharing your expertise.
Ginja, love your content and been subscribed for a while. Full of very useful information. Taking care of new Kentucky blue sod up here in Michigan. Will a pre emergent stop my bluegrass seed tops from germinating when they appear in mid-May? I like to let it grow so the seed tops get put back down when I mow (mulch). And will a pre emergent stop the ‘clump tall fescue’ from germinating? That coarse grass took over my old lawn. It was everywhere and was told the only way to get rid of it was to use Roundup. Thanks for being there for us lawn geeks!!
Pre emergents stop seed germination. It will not stop seed head formation but still disallow those seeds tp germinate adds the pre emergent products are active. It will stop bunching tall fescue seed germination but if the seed has already germinated those grasses will emerge. It will not stop rhizome spreads either so the clumps will get larger
I've cleared several acres of timberland, and now what should be my pasture is a field of nothing but crabgrass. It has completely taken over. I need to get bermuda planted for grazing, but the crabgrass is so thick nothing will grow. While not a lawn, will one of these work? Keep in mind, it's a pasture, so watering isn't an option. It's August, in Texas, can I put something down now to get a start before spring?
bermuda can be a booger to seed. seed germination is very slow moving. if you're in a hot part of texas bermuda will most likely be your best bet. You can always try to plug it one section at a time. once the bermuda gets thick enough it will ward other types of weeds off but it takes time. It's also a needy grass. It constantly grows off the stolon and needs to be scalped twice a year. I think zoysia would be a better choice.
Hi. I know this is an older video but it was very educational to me. My question is I live in HOT Texas and I have a lot of crabgrass heading into October. What do you suggest for an area that stay in the 80s till November. Thanks
As always a great vid. As a Swede, I have to ask if there is any organic alternative, because these products are difficult to obtain outside the US? Cheers!
Wow excellent video !! Ok here’s where I’m at .... I did a 500sq’ Sod last April, it took and looked awesome, in late Nov I laid Greenville winter fert do I need to do anything in the spring I’m in southeastern Pa? I do own Tenacity and a million other fertilizers... I’m totally new to lawn care and I did notice a jumble of something in a few area’s in the lawn at the end of the season thanks in advance
Really depends on the type of grass you have and your lawn goals. Pre emergents are great and best applied before the ground temps hit 50 degrees. I use tenacity as more of a pre / post emergent and not as much as a stand alone pre emergent. It doesn't do as good of a pre emergent job as compared to straight dithiopyr or prodiamine.
Pest and Lawn Ginja cool thank you! I’ve watched a ton of these type of videos and yours is by far the most informative keep em comming you have a new follower and fan !!!
My local soil temps are hovering around 50 degrees. It's been snowing and sleeting all week. Most wouldn't think the soil is that warm IMO. We started putting down pre emergent march 1st. I'll be using tenacity and an overseed on my lawn this season so I'm holding off for a bit.
Pest and Lawn Ginja I bought your same soil thermometer. I’ve been testing my temps. I’m looking to apply my Prodiamine next Saturday. It’s a great time of the year. Keep up the great content!
Good advice as usual! I get a lot of grassy annual weeds, crab grass wasn't too bad last year but I really want to take out the POA, foxtail, barnyard grass (and quack if at all possible but I'm probably screwed either way with quackgrass). My goal this spring and summer is to control weeds and make a good foundation for a heavy overseeding and renovation mid August, so the weeds arent causing problems and choking the seed out later on. Any suggestions? I was thinking about doing a 4 month app rate of prodiamine in a couple weeks. And maybe tenacity if it will be needed just prior to seeding in August. Prodiamine is quite a bit cheaper than dithipoyr.
If you have the extra $$ I would do an 2 to 3 month app of pendimethalin and then an app of tenacity every two weeks followed by the overseed on the 2nd or 3rd app.
ok I don't have a spreader. I want to spread the stuff by hand and can't imagine out how densly to spread it. Is there any way to communicate how densly you should spread it?
I'm sure they do, but i'm fairly confident it would take a very long time given that pre emergent is water insoluble and takes soil microbes to break it down.
following you awesome videos, im in the northeast. I havent bought it yet. my lawn is in great shape but I'm at the point where I'm beyond using scotts products. ryegrass fescure mix in my lawn what do you recommend?
I have a new lawn that I started this year with tons of weeds. I have most of them under control. What would be the best pre emergent for next year for sandy soil? I was going to go with tenacity in the spring but is there something else I should go with?
tenacity is NOT a great pre emergent. I would use dithiopyr or prodiamine for a standalone pre emergent. dithiopyr bonds with the soil and where prodiamine is a barrier that can be broken with aeration, dethatching, weed wacking etc.
going to overseed some small areas that need it this spring and use tenacity for pre-emergent. is this also I have a small area of zoysia grass. I s it also ok to use there?
tenacity will stress out your zoysia and possibly kill it. It's not for use with tenacity according to the label. Tenacity isn't a great pre emergent. it lasts about 3 weeks at best.
So at this point, August, I may as well start researching and coming up with a plan to prevent all the crab grass for next spring. Fertilize and get the ground ready for Spring of 2020. I just took over this job as my landscaper was very inconsistent this year. Figure I will save money in the long run learning how to do this myself. Are there any precautions or cautions for pets and kids playing on the lawn in reference to these products? Great video btw.
Ginja, Love your videos. You do a fantastic job. I have a question: I live in Oregon cool season grass (perennial rye grass with some fine rescue) I have two areas in my house front lawn looks amazing. I had some poa problems in the spring because I aerated and seeded last fall 2018 and the seed I used had some some percentage of other weeds in it. I am assuming it was poa. I removed those areas and put new sod and prodiamine(split app) and looks amazing. In the back I choose to leave the poa and do prodiamine and the lawns looks great but I can still see the areas with poa. I have to make a decision. I can’t use prodiamine because I reach my yearly max. I am not going to aerate or seed. My question is: if I use tenacity as a blanket application would that take care my poa problem or I am better off removing the areas with poa, add new sod or seed and blanket spray tenacity? Do I need to do a second application of tenacity 3 weeks after sep ? Do I need to add an ionic surfactant? If I heard correctly I need to wait 12 to 24 hours to water in tenacity? Sep 1 is when I am expecting temperatures to come down to 70 degrees. Another option was to use Dithiopyr 0-0-20 granular without removing the areas with poa. Or I can remove the poa, put new sod and then apply Dithiopyr? Any help it will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Pest and Lawn Ginja thanks for the reply. So what are u saying is to do Dithiopyr on Sep 1( my temps will be at 70 degrees) and follow by tenacity? Should I wait a few days ta apply tenacity as a blanket application? What about water this products in? If I apply both on the same day can I water both in or wait 24 hours and water them in? Thanks in advance.
Do you have a recommended spreader for DIY like myself. I had a Scott Spreader from HD and it broke right away made out of cheap plastic with cheap plastic wheels. I would spend more money on a good well made spreader that is accurate easy to use and long lasting.
Hey there LOVE your channel! Question, I am doing a lawn renovation in the next couple weekends. I have the tenacity and surfactant to put down in my weed riddled lawn. I assume that is as a post emergent since it is post weed growth. Once a couple weeks have gone by and I am seeing the result of that application do I then aerate and over-seed? And then at what point do I put tenacity back down as a pre emergent so that weeds don’t attack my new seedlings? Hopefully some of that is correct and you know how to help a new lawn learner like me! I live in a high end neighborhood and am trying to keep up without paying a service to put subpar stuff down. Plus I enjoy it!
tenacity isn't a long standing pre emergent so i prefer to do 2 back to back 14 days apart. then on the second one I drop the seed. so yes, you can aerate and overseed that same day.
Great video. I live in upstate NY and have always had good luck using scotts crabgrass halts. I usually put down halts the end of March or early April. I then go with scotts weed and feed in May and my lawn is beautiful until end of July and the crabbgrass starts to apper. Would yourecommend using Tenacity in the middle of June and would it help take care of the July crabgrass? Thank you
Hi Mike! Tenacity isn't the best solution for a true pre emergent. It does really well getting rid of crabgrass. I recommend people use it as a pre emergent while over seeding. If you're planning on using a pre emergent stick to the course you've been following. It's a great product to kill crabgrass after it's emerged.
I live in Michigan. I have a clay based lawn, (thanks to the builder removing the topsoil), it has taken 2 years of soil tests, peat moss top dressing, aerating, and post emergent treatments with 2,4D and quinclorac, but I finally have a really nice lawn. However, I had a bad dandelion problem in Spring of 2021 then crab grass issues in August 2021. I did a a major overseed project with 50lbs of KBG in mid September and top dressed with peat moss with a landzie roller, after core aerating the whole 15,000 ft2 yard. What would be your recommendation for a pre-emergent before the soil temps reach 55 degrees? I don't mind spending the money on a good product. I am unsure if I should go with Dithiopyr, Prodiamine, or something else. I am hoping to initially prevent the dandelions, but if a second app in late July would also prevent the crabgrass then I will do that. Whatever guidance you could give would be very much appreciated. I want to try and prevent any of these issues this growing season to allow the KGB room to fully mature to really thicken up the lawn. I also put in an irrigation system at the beginning of September last year so I could have complete control of the watering. Thank you.
HI Ginja, I put some pre emergent along which comes with some fert when the ground was still frozen about a 3 weeks ago. I am now sacred to put that again once temps hit 55 as it might burn the lawn, what do you think i should do here?
Pre emergent in and of itself has zero burning capabilities. Now, if you're saying that you put down a bag of pre emergent fertilizer there is potential of burning. Watch my video I posted today on nitrogen. Figure out how many lbs per 1000ft2 you put down and do some math. If the bag says 20.2.4, for example, take the first number (which is the nitrogen) and divide 100/20= 5lbs. that 5lbs of product per 1000ft will equal to 1lbs of nitrogen per 1000ft2. Burning occurs after we reach above 1.3 to 1.5 on average area dependent. what gets confusing is if your primary ingredient is Urea it's a whole different ball game. Urea will lose 50% of the Nitrogen to the atmosphere. So you double those numbers in essence. IMO its a total waste to use urea early spring. Ammonium sulfate is best for high ph and low ph nitrate nitrogens.
Hey great video! Can I apply a pre-emergent corn gluten weed control this sping if I overseeded late last fall? also can I apply starter fertilizer with the pre-emergent or is that too much nitrogen?
Watch todays video on "this is my lawn". That will explain the nitrogen. IMO there are very few times to exceed 1lbs of nitrogen in one dose. If you're not planning on overseeding this spring you can apply pre emergent. If the seed established well I would come out of the gates at 1/2lbs of N
Great Vid! I went with Tenacity this year, with a lawn comprised of such a high percentage of weeds, I was expecting more bareness, its only been a week though. Such a small dose makes me question if I did it right though. 2 teaspoons of tenacity from a backpack sprayer for 1000sq ft of lawn sounds right though?
Thanks for reply on sprayers. My next question is Spring Pre-emergent weed control its march in Chicago soil temp is 46-47 degrees. I have tenacity used last year is prodiamine better this year and then how long after to 1st fertilize. 3000sq.ft. to do.
I try and educate people that tenacity doesn't last long. It was never meant to be the ultimate pre emergent. More of a supplement. If you read the label the label suggests mixing prodiamine into the tenacity for extended pre emergent periods.
I've recently plugged 1/2 of the yard with Zoysia and it even beginning to spread on first year. The only successful treatment I've had for crabgrass is Tenacity, but I wonder if it's safe with zoysia. I've heard both ways. What's your opinion?
Ginja, what about pennant magnum heard it supresses nutsedge and kyllinga really well. It is advantages to apply a half rate of it and half rate dithiopyr on my bermuda before the spring begins?
I haven't used it. I've heard really good things about it. I would choose one product or the other. I could see benefits from a spring / fall split app. keep in mind that pre emergents aren't discriminatory but some have post emergent properties where others don't.
@@pestandlawnginja if i get you right, what you mean is i have no cause to worry if i apply them together in spring and fall or you actually mean, i use one in spring and the other in fall?
Something is eating the leaves of my 3 weeks old grass. It’s tall fescue and I noticed that the germinated seeds heads are trimmed in a newly planted area. Any suggestions ?
Had to watch twice Mr Gija there was acrobat doing cart wheels and then later on the dog was enjoying a back rub on the weed free lawn so I missed some but I've got it all now 😁 good job

where can I find Dimension in a smaller bottle-all I can find is 1/2 gallon, from the dilution rate something like tbsp/gal this will last me forever
they do that because they don't want home owners buying it at concentrate. the 1/2 gallon is about the smallest you'll get it. they used to do a 32oz jug but I haven't seen it in a while.
Best lawn service videos out there man. Killing it with knowledge

bro! huge compliment. thank you
Pest and Lawn Ginja does that HJ brand have larger granules?
I know this is very uncommon or unadvisedly but I used tenacity for spring seeding of KBG/PRG and it was the best think ever. I’m about 5 weeks in and it’s already nice and full with 0 weeds. Now it’s just maintenance from here

@@pestandlawnginja So you are saying the tenacity is ideal to put down as a primary pre-emergent. I am going to order a bottle to have on hand.

Honestly one of the best channels I have subbed to on YT. Great work Ginja!
Sam, really appreciate the compliment!!!
Incredible overview of the active ingredients... I've watched a few of your vids but subbed just because of this one!
Thanks Jamie! Glad to hear you found value
The most detailed and most knowledgeable lawn care video on RUclips today By far head and shoulders above the rest the lawn GINGA 🎯🌴🌾
Thanks Chapo!! super kind
Awesome videos... I’m a newbie & need all the help I can get. I can’t even tell you how many times I need to pause to take notes!!! Thanks Ginja!!!
Glad it was helpful! I really appreciate the support.
I am sold on the Tenacity Herbicide and am waiting to try that on my lawn for a pre and post application. Thanks for sharing the vital information.
You're welcome samuel! It's a fun product.
Very cool. I'll have to consider it.
STOKED!!! very informative and definitely cleared up my confusion. I just put down a granular with dithiopyr about a month ago. I need to wait a few more weeks before I overseed.
Perfect!
Thanks for breaking down the different pre emergent herbicides . The benefits and the problems you may have with certain ones. I know where i am at with bermuda grass is my main turf grass, that Tenacity is not an option. But the others are. Thanks again.
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment!
How would you suggest when wanting to add st aug plugs to a lawn renovation?
Thank you, Ginja. Your videos are so helpful.
You're welcome Ryan, thanks for the love
Great content. Thank you for posting additional notes in descr and the links in Amazon. I've never seen these in home improvement stores.
You're welcome. I'll be updating the notes as I get more time.
I subscribed my friend. As someone who hasn't used pre emergent in a long time and really is not an advocate of them, I really appreciate how informative and well conveyed this was. Nicely done, I really like your deep knowledge and straight forward delivery here without the fluff.....
Really appreciate the feedback. thanks for subscribing
Great video again mister Ginja. If you open a Home garden store you will get all the costumers because you explain very well.
Thanks for watching and commenting Wilvert! I'd talk to much in a home and garden store. I'd probably never leave lOL
Ginja thank you for all the great videos and helpful tips. You are hands down one of the best lawn care tubers on RUclips. Oh and that beard is really coming along nicely 🤘
Super kind Brent!!! Thank you so much
You had a video with a special measuring cup that you were using for prodiamine/barricade.......where can I find that to buy??!!
I’m tired of breaking out the scale or trying to remember how many teaspoons per square foot Etc.
Thanks!!! Love the content you are putting out.
Those measuring cups come straight from the manufacturer. I would call domyown and see if they have any for sale
Great video Ginga. Saved to my lawn care favorites. What about Barricade? Doesn't that fit into this group somewhere?
barricade = prodiamine
With using pre emergent one of the benefits in using them specifically for gardens it will allow to significantly help with weed control when it comes to using starts.
absolutely! Be sure to read the labels. Many pre emergents are not garden safe.
Great vid
My question is this.
Great overview! Very interesting point about switching it up. I hadn't heard that before.
indeed! Thanks for watching Jay!
An excellent review of pre-emergent options. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm doing cartwheels and summersaults myself in celebration of spring and being outside in the lawn again.

Very knowledgeable and detailed explanation!! Super helpful!! Thank you Ginja!!
you're welcome! Glad that you found value.
Your kid in the background is great!!
Thank you! They love the comments that include them 👊🤩
Great video and detail...thank you. I am in Charlotte with 2/3 acre lot and since it is now April I did not put down a pre-emergent yet. is it too late to do a PE? Can I just use the Tenacity now and then start with PE next year?
What preemergent is safe for grazing animals. How long should you keep them off. Thanks
Tough questions. According to the msds no herbicide is recommended for grazing animals
Professor Al and Professor Ginga collaboration would be eye opening in mathematical calculations and information for us DIYers. 😁👍👍
ha, love it!!! Thanks for the compliment. made my day
Awesome video. Thanks for breaking it down like that. I noticed the other day that Prodiamine comes in two different Weed Types. I'm gonna guess you are just taking about Crabgrass so you didn't cover that. In case I have Dallisgrass what is the punchline for it?
msma or cma are the go to. Its a booger of a weed
Pest and Lawn Ginja nice answer however I tried to purchase those two chemicals here in west Texas and the supplier would not sell them to me.
As a was told it could only be sold to golf courses, I said what about a farmer? No dice 😫🛫 what do you suggest?
So I’ve heard not to aerate in the fall, does this apply for fall Bermuda lawns?
It’s a soil issue. Clay is best aerated in the fall. Sand best in the spring
Do you wear a mask when spraying prodiamine? Thanks
The label doesn't require it with the product we use.
Your videos are excellent. Thank you for your helpful advice.
You are so welcome!
The best content I’ve seen on this subject matter.
Question:
Are there spreader settings on these products for the popular spreader models?
only on a few of the bags. that would be the only frustrating part.
I have POA annua that I need to address this fall, can I use tenacity after I aerate and overseed? Or do I have to forgo seeding all together and just use prodiamine or Dimension?
Thanks again for the great content.
Tenacity works great for POA. Just keep in mind you'll need to do back to back applications within 2 to 3 weeks.
I’m planning laying sod for the backyard, which currently overtaken by weed and crab grass. Which pre emergent should I use while tilling the soil for better results? Thanks.
application should be made after you're completely finished and within 2 weeks of the finished product. I prefer prodiamine at the high rates
Lawn ginja, i just put down Scotts weed & feed last week after reading the bag i didn't see any of these chemicals you mentioned can i put down one of these products you showed with out any harm to my lawn ? I'm located in Denver, Colo.
If it's just pre emergent and no fertilizer you'll be just fine.
What a great video! Thank you for the review!!! Great video to watch over and over again.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks and great vid. I love in Northeast and have KBG. Should I aerate in early spring before pre-emerg? Thanks
I prefer to scarify
early spring 2019 I used a pre emergent crabgrass preventer and we've never had such a beautiful lawn. The bag was white with black lettering. It said crabgrass preventer as a lable and one bag of granular material covered 10,000 sq ft. Couldn't find it this year so we used Scots Crabgrass pre emergent and our lawn is inundated with dandelions. Do you have any idea who made the product we used?
not a clue hahaha. so many products out there. Most likely pendimethalyn or dithiopyr.
Unfortunately Bermuda doesn't play well with tenacity. Check the prodiamine and dithiopyr label
Thanks for the feedback Ginja. Love your videos!!
This video is gem packed with so many good information... Thank you again for another great video !! I am subscribing now.
Thanks for the sub! Glad you found value! appreciate the feedback!
These are great vids,
How did you get started in this work?
Thanks B. I sold door to door for 6 years and listened to people's concerns. Dove in after that and learned first hand on the lawns.
If I didnt know any better. I would say that you are in Norther Utah... If so, what is the lay down cut off for pre-emerg
It's always about soil temps. It's commonly too late by april 15 to april 25 IMO
Your son is the main role in this video!:))
He had soo much fun! Thanks for commenting. made his day
I've cleared several acres of timberland, and now what should be my pasture is a field of nothing but crabgrass.
Should one aerate then power rake or just do one vs the other?
I prefer to power rake first then do the plugs
Hi. I know this is an older video but it was very educational to me. My question is I live in HOT Texas and I have a lot of crabgrass heading into October. What do you suggest for an area that stay in the 80s till November. Thanks
dithiopyr would be my choice
As always a great vid.
As a Swede, I have to ask if there is any organic alternative, because these products are difficult to obtain outside the US? Cheers!
yes there is. Corn Gluten meal. there should be plenty instructions on google for rates. Thanks for watching! Love the Swede's!!!
Pest and Lawn Ginja Sorry forgot I have Kentucky Bluegrass and I cut tall 3-3/12” usually cut between 2 -3 times a week
@@rayboo829 love it. sounds like you're doing well. I'd hit it with some prodiamine if you're going to use pre emergent. you could do that now.
Pest and Lawn Ginja cool thank you! I’ve watched a ton of these type of videos and yours is by far the most informative keep em comming you have a new follower and fan !!!
Thanks!
How are your soil temps? How close are you from applying your pre emergent?
My local soil temps are hovering around 50 degrees. It's been snowing and sleeting all week. Most wouldn't think the soil is that warm IMO. We started putting down pre emergent march 1st. I'll be using tenacity and an overseed on my lawn this season so I'm holding off for a bit.
Pest and Lawn Ginja I bought your same soil thermometer. I’ve been testing my temps. I’m looking to apply my Prodiamine next Saturday. It’s a great time of the year. Keep up the great content!
Awesome! I'm shocked at how well it works. Almost a year old and still kicking.
Gosh. That's difficult. It needs to be spread at so many lbs per 1000ft2. The more precise you can be the better cost savings and efficacy.
I use IFA's 4 step program... is their step one crabgrass premergent adequate or should I use something in addition?
It's adequate. the granular size is large so you won't have as good of coverage as a standalone pre m. if it's worked in the past don't change it.
Do ganular pre-ems have a shelf life? I have a couple of sealed bags left over from about 2 years ago.
I'm sure they do, but i'm fairly confident it would take a very long time given that pre emergent is water insoluble and takes soil microbes to break it down.
following you awesome videos, im in the northeast. I havent bought it yet.
my lawn is in great shape but I'm at the point where I'm beyond using scotts products.
ryegrass fescure mix in my lawn what do you recommend?
either prodiamine or dithiopyr
Tenacity isn't a great pre emergent. it lasts about 3 weeks at best.
do preemergents halt st augustine or Bermuda from spreading? my lawn is thin in spots?
Trifluralin can do that and that's why its not recommended for lawns
@@pestandlawnginja thanks my man ! i ll try a split dose of prodiamine on my thin south fl lawn .i added it to my weed killer in the beds
There general rule is to let it dry before re entry. With the granular products you want to water in .5" after applying it.
Pest and Lawn Ginja cool thanks. Yeah we have the irrigation system running twice a day as well
I suggest watering 2x to 3x per week only
Pest and Lawn Ginja really. Ok.
Pest and Lawn Ginja year round or just during the fall. I’m in MA.
What's the best way to clean out a sprayer from one herbicide to insecticide etc. if using an electric sprayer?
They sell a tank cleaner solution on domyown.com . Or you can driple rinse the tank and hope for the best.
Are those the Rockies behind you? I'm in Fort Collins trying to deal with clay soil and crabgrass. Thanks for the info, especially the pricing.
Yes they are! I'm in Utah. very similar conditions to where your at.
Ginja,
Love your videos. You do a fantastic job. I have a question:
I live in Oregon cool season grass (perennial rye grass with some fine rescue) I have two areas in my house front lawn looks amazing.
Personally I would do two to three apps of tenacity and use dithiopyr
Pest and Lawn Ginja thanks for the reply. So what are u saying is to do Dithiopyr on Sep 1( my temps will be at 70 degrees) and follow by tenacity? Should I wait a few days ta apply tenacity as a blanket application?
What about water this products in? If I apply both on the same day can I water both in or wait 24 hours and water them in? Thanks in advance.
Great info as always Ginja.
Thanks Steve! really appreciate you spending time to watch my videos
Great video and info Ginja! Can you share what you are using to edit? Looks great man 👍
I use imovie. I like to keep it simple.
@@pestandlawnginja thanks Ginja!!
I bought Tenacity, Serfactan and Lazer. Do I want to water it in, or apply it when there is no rain expected?
it needs to dry if you use it as a post emergent and then you need to water it in.
Very knowledgeable! Excellent presentation.
Thanks Daniela! appreciate the feedback

What one you suggest to use in flowerbeds before mulching. Thanks
The snapshot for sure
Really well assembled information!
Thanks!
Thank you.
What do you use for planting beds for weed control?
dithiopyr as long as you're not planning on planting new seeds
@@pestandlawnginja I was thinking about using snapshot
@@lushlawns8904 isoxaben is a great choice
HI Ginja,
I put some pre emergent along which comes with some fert when the ground was still frozen about a 3 weeks ago.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks!
Yessss!! You’re back.
Thanks Allen! Good to be back on the lawns
Can you use Tenacity on Bermuda, heard not to use.
no, not meant for use on bermuda
Hey great video! Can I apply a pre-emergent corn gluten weed control this sping if I overseeded late last fall? also can I apply starter fertilizer with the pre-emergent or is that too much nitrogen?
Watch todays video on "this is my lawn". That will explain the nitrogen. IMO there are very few times to exceed 1lbs of nitrogen in one dose. If you're not planning on overseeding this spring you can apply pre emergent. If the seed established well I would come out of the gates at 1/2lbs of N
Where is the spreadsheet? I enjoyed your video!!! Well done..
Hi Bert! I don't have a master downloadable version since the prices are always changing.
Can you use Preen on lawns?
NEVER, it will kill the roots of the grass.
Bro...nice work and thanks for the info!
You bet!
Thank you for good, informative video, Ginga. The question. What to do after Tenacity application if most of the lawn got white?🤦🏻♀️😁😁Overseeding?
bio stimulants like humate and sea kelp every 2 weeks
It's recommended at .68 to 1 teaspoon per 1000ft2
Would it be possible to get a copy of the spreadsheet you use in this video?
I don't have this exact sheet but I do have another that you could alter to suit your needs

Its not safe for use on actively growing zoysia. I've tried used it on zoysia to see and it will stress it beyond belief.
